Neal, the OG based god speedfreak with a legend so exceptionally unique that it’s simply unbelievably beautiful. You can see the excitement when describing how Neal drove the bus. I can only imagine being a Prankster on Further as Neal’s passenger at one point of my life…
One of the great ‘on the road’ lines about Cassidy (Moriarty) from Kerouac I recall is when they were driving past Salt Lake City with a few stranger passengers and all of a sudden Neal pulls over and goes to sleep. Kerouac writes the lady said in a suppressed hysterical whisper, we can’t let him drive anymore, he’s absolutely crazy. They must have let him out of an asylum or something. Lmfao.
I somehow managed to keep the tuxedo from my wedding and was going to tie die it, but as luck would have it it got ruined in a flood a couple of days after I got the idea.
Yeah well, safety wasn't exactly the reason why people are still looking back to this trip almost 60 years later. Kinda feels like you're in the wrong audience.
I completely agree. I used to think this was awesome the first time I heard of this, but these days, some tripping goof driving a bus down the road and getting out of his seat walking down the aisle just sounds completely foolish. Totally an irresponsible thing to do, even in 1964.
Yes. And in turn, hanging out with the Pranksters was Neal's undoing. He became a babbling, shiftless person with nothing to show for his life. Hanging out with the Pranksters turned Neal into a burned out shell of a person who was just entertainment for Kesey and his gang. They really didn't give a shit about him. A sad end for what was once an amazing life.
George is among a small group of folks who can accurately talk about Neal from a personal perspective. His accounts are interesting and informative. Great video here, and while he is sitting in the driver's seat of Kesey's second bus creation. Neal never had a chance to drive this one as he passed in 1968 in Mexico(that's another story that George can tell accurately).
There is a passage in "On The Road" where Kerouac describes how Cassady critiqued other drivers, and the way they took corners at speed. The point was that the other drivers slowed down too soon and then turned but then ran out of road at the exit of the corner and had to slow again. This is called understeer in racing terms. Cassady was a very sophisticated driver with the skill of a racing driver. The ideal line in a corner is to brake late and then turn in so that you hit the apex of the turn on the other side of the corner. Then it is just a matter of feeding back in the throttle until you are flat out and you will not experience the dreaded understeer that makes people go off the road.
Before cars had push button speed control, on long distance driving I did the left foot thing too because my right foot would have a sore heal. That was the era of bench front seats so I could drape my right leg and foot over the passenger side until my heal wasn't sore and the tension had left my right leg. Tried all kinds of right foot positions on the gas pedal to vary the pressure, but on long road trips using the left foot was a necessity.
Neal cassady would not do well with things like cell phone laws (look away for two seconds to check your phone someone slams on their brakes, a kid jumps out of a bush whatever)
What if someone pulled out in front of him or a deer ran out unexpectedly a couple of seconds after he looked?

Dealing in hypotheticals only serves to keep us from the moment and the reality of a moment. "What if" anything anytime anywhere anywho? You could theorize all you want about potentials and anomalies but does it serve any purpose for you to ask those particular questions?
I am working on a new musical called, Cassady & Cassidy. It's about Neal Cassady and Cassidy Hutchenson driving in a bus, high on LSD and the adventures they experience on their road trip. It should be fun for the whole family! Some of the songs I am working on: Poor Judge of Character Driving with My Eyes Closed Screw You/Screw Me?

Me too brother me too, there is a point in my life where riding on that bus could have been an even more magical time in my life haha

Neal was the exception, do not try this at home, kids.
U mean, don't try driving on acid 😂
You guys are awesome all you pranksters.
I saw a kid in Noblesville who had a jacket like that I think he made it cuz I said I liked it and he said thanks my friend made it he’s a prankster

Alot can happen in 15 seconds.
Neal accounted for possibilities and exceptions to the rules. You just had to see it, to see it.
I think it would be pretty safe to assume traffic was different back then. I cannot see anyone doing that nowaday.
George walker is a legend 🙌
he is also a criminal
and a deadbeat father
Looking back, this was very careless. We should not put him on a pedestal. Neal hurt a lot of people around him.
Nobody's perfect. Neal was a legend.

pretty good metaphor for the entire generation, imo. no wonder they are all Qanon and trump supporters now.

Photographic memory
So, it was as if Cassady could safely text while driving?
Awesomeness
How cool is that!

I love THE BUS
Makes for great war stories, but the truth is he was constantly putting many lives in danger.
Nobody else should try it.
Elon musk take note. Full self-driving algorithms can be aided by studying this

Definitely far out
This and everybody sees the bus and avoids it. Doubt he could do this in a car
Who has me on mind control?
