Filmmaking Won't Fulfill You | Sony FX3

- In my pursuit of filmmaking, I've found the sober reality of still being empty. Maybe you've encountered that too. I don't think filmmaking is unique in that aspect, in fact, I think all careers will lead us to the same feeling of being empty. If you haven't experienced or heard this piece of advice yet, let me be the first to tell that you filmmaking won't fulfill you.
The talking head was filmed with the Sony FX3 at 12800 ISO. With the short film parts filmed with the Red Komodo.

I think this film has showed me to remember to do it for the right reason, and not just the desire to gain all the attention! Thank you for this🙏🏾
Absolutely man! Really glad this message resonated with you. Living the life you’re called to first will inevitably make your work connect with others. I believe that 🥲
@@jordanadudek the complete truth! GOD BLESS YOU! 🙏🏾
"The man who loves walking will go further than the one who loves the destination." Nothing worse than reaching a destination only to realise "is that all there is?", we find the most purpose and fulfilment when we are working towards something.
Found your channel today and your film making is great man, seems as though it's inspired and resonated with many. What's not to say it won't from now until the end of time? The goal isn't to live forever, it's to create something that will and I think you've done/are doing exactly just that.
What a beautiful comment. Thank you so much for those kind words and encouragement! I think you’re spot on too, the goal is to create art that extends further than we will ever hope to last. And thank you for being here on this channel!
Dude! Another gorgeous video! I think I use my personal filmmaking to have fun with my friends and my crew, or if it's smaller videos of just me, I know i'll always be able to look back and see myself from a different time. It's almost like a lifelong documentary project for me, by me. Everything in between are just the chapters of my own story.
Man, that’s a beautiful perspective to have on your own personal filmmaking. It’ll be such a wonderful thing to look back on and remember all the memories and sweet times. Thank you for sharing that perspective ✌🏻
Saving this video for when that burnout inevitably hits again! Thank you for putting into words something my mind hasn't been able to comprehend for years. From my early teens, I put all my eggs in one basket. Filmmaking was the goal, the destination. And that drive excelled me through school and university, but I missed out on so much more. Social activities, friends, myself. I got so wrapped up in the audience, the views, the response, that I neglected the rest of my life. Sometimes, we need to remember to make art... just for the sake of art, not the attention. Thank you so much for this, Jordan!
You summarized that wonderfully Sam! And you’re right, that burnout will inevitably come again, and that’s just part of it. I do think there are times in our life when we can pursue things more in our life, but there’s a time for everything. As long as we get that time to rest, recover, and be with people we care for. Sounds like you already know all of that too! Thank you for commenting and thank you for being here 😊
Can you kindly admit that Fuji X-H2S is King of APS-C cameras out there for filmmaking? ._.
Well, it’s a mixed bag. I haven’t used the new FX30, but I do really love the C70 too. However, for the price, it does seem like the Fuji X-H2S has some magic sauce to it. I’ve recently sold mine for the Sony FX3. It’s really hard to wrong with any of these new cameras!
I think most of us fall into this - Wanting to share the things we make and along with that, wanting people to like them. We want to be loved for the things we create.
This one hit home. Good message brotha.
Phew, you hit the nail on the head with that. I definitely do a lot of things out of wanting to be loved. I’ve found it can be more powerful to create from being loved, instead of trying to be loved.
Preciate you as always man 🫡
I was waiting for this!
Hope this video doesn’t make you switch careers 😂
Hey man this resonated with me. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching! Very glad this resonated with you too. We’re all in this journey together 💪🏻
@@jordanadudek keep up the good work dude.
I love this whole film. I would love to create an image of this caliber with the Sony A74
Hey man! Thank you so much. The A74 is a great camera, and I have no doubts that you can create a very similar image to the FX3! Some of the “cinematic” shots of this video were shot with the Komodo, which doesn’t have a different image
@@jordanadudek Keep up the great work. Matching the Sony FX3 and Red Komodo together looks cool. Alongside the Sony A74 I am looking at the Canon R7 and Canon R6 Mark ii. Have a blessed day
Absolutely Jordan! We as artists view our worth by the level of our creations. But we have to realize people don't love us as individuals cause we are filmmakers. We are loved for who we are as humans. The most difficult thing ive struggled with is not soley focusing on my career. I hit burnout a month ago and it was horrible. Anxiety and depression set it. I realized I had been so self absorbed for 8 months. If you drive yourself too hare in your passion it will destroy you. We are more than artists, and we have to go be more than artists. Awesome vid, I'm glad you made it.
Man, you’re spot on. Being self-absorbed will absolutely crush any creativity and progress we hope for. We need to be focused on other people and how to elevate them. Thank you for that reminder!
Amazing! This is a truth for all of us no matter what career path. Love this. 👊🏽
Always appreciate you man! Hope you’re doing well 💪🏻
Loved this message Jordan. Honestly couldn't have needed to hear it more then right now. I love your color grading, do you sell LUTs or could you make a video demonstrating that progress?
That warms my heart to hear the timing of you watching this!
Thank you for the compliments on the color grade. I probably should do a brief tutorial, but it’s quite simple. I use Davinci, as well as the Dehancer plug-in. There’s a few different film and print emulations I cycle through. Mostly Kodak 250D! Also, I almost always use Phantom LUTS! They’re the best on the market in my opinion
@@jordanadudek Thanks again. That's fantastic! For now I'm stuck with 8-bit color on my A7iii but I can't wait to have a FX3 one day! keep up the great work :)
@@jordanadudek can't wait bro!
Man, you just keep putting out great stuff. I agree with you and think it's so easy to fall for the trap of focussing on result. And wandering down this path too much makes you fall out of love with the process, making it harder to motivate yourself and resulting in a negative spiral. For me, focussing more on doing what I love, whether that's filmmaking on one day or just reading a book the other day, has helped me to put less stress on results (sometimes, I still struggle daily haha). In the effort to pursue a career, we sometimes forget to listen to our own needs and those of people around us
Some really wise words here Justin! I definitely become “results focused.” And I’ve seen myself sacrifice relationships on set because of it. Just need to keep putting people first.
I am amazed by your work and your videos. I have a question that intrigues me...why did you switch from the Fuji XH2S to the FX3? thanks!
Thank you for supporting the channel!
I mainly switched because of my needs for work, being low light and autofocus. But the Fuji has much better image quality and color. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t switch
Amazing :)
The point is , it could fulfill you if it's not this alone, it's if you prioritice the right things at it's propper Place, and we all have to figure it out, if it's with 18 or 24 or 38 :D Love you too man NICE VIDEO!
Absolutely! There’s a place and time for everything. And filmmaking can be a major part of your life while balancing the other parts. I’ve just always found that both my life and filmmaking suffer when I prioritize filmmaking first
Awesome video! Love it!
Thank you for watching!!
So calm & nice content, I wonder how you manage to get the audio so clean? How do you clean the audio? If you could a tutorial on that, much appreciated. Thanks.
I’ll need to check again for this specific video, but I used the DJI wireless mics. Pretty sure I just messed with the EQ until it felt right. I have next to zero knowledge about sound 😂
Keep chasing those butterflies cowboy❤❤❤
😂 🤠
Hey! I'm only a teen and am currently yet to have an actual career in filmmaking yet (a hobby for me), but I'd like to thank you for telling us this message. I consistently struggle with having a school-life balance where I prioritize my school work too much and that it takes apart my life, and this reminded me to find a balance in everything that I do! Let me just say, you've just impacted one more person's life. Thank you for this beautiful video, absolutely love the message and execution!
Wow. Thank you for sharing all of this and being honest. I hope you're doing well and are able to find a healthy balance!
Way too deep for something so superfical: film making.
Agree to disagree. It depends on the type of filmmaking you’re into. But in the short film/feature film world, filmmaking is anything but superficial in my opinion.
Gold, pure gold. How do you do it? Do you write these, or are they impromptu, from the heart?
Hey Scott! Thank you so much for your kind comment. I try to write down some thoughts throughout the week as they come. From there, I'll review those notes and then just try to speak from the heart after that!
solid dude! felt the lord in this video..thanks for sharing!
Love to hear that! Thank you for being here 🙏🏻
This is much needed wisdom, Jordan. Thank you.
Thank you for watching! Failure can really teach us a lot, and boy I’ve failed a lot 😂
nicely put.. and so true! thank you!
Thank you for watching!
That ISO on the FX3 is killing it!
I know right! Even in that changing light, it still worked flawlessly. Thank you for watching!
Dude your from memphis???? No way!
Ya man! Currently in Memphis! Are you here?
Wise words my friend. So true.
Thank you for watching! Really glad this vide and message reached you!
I love this!! The mic is so perfect what you use?
Thank so much for watching! I used the DJI Lav mics for these. Nothing fancy. Just a little bit of EQ adjustment in Davinci 🙃
@@jordanadudek wow!! It’s a amazing!! Over the pass few months I have been buying all sorts of mics to reach this sort of quality but thank you for mentioning EQ adjustment!! Waiting for the next vid 🤝
@@JACQUESETIA thank you! I’ll need to see if I can find the video that helped me with EQ!
dude you're a nice person
Hahah I’ll need to get that in writing! Thanks my man
Needed to hear this. Thank you
Thank you for watching! And glad that you are here 🥲
Nicely said my friend
Thank you so much!
This is an important message, really hit close to home
Thank you for watching! Even this past week I find myself falling into the same trap. Glad this resonated with you!
Hey man, what lens did you use for this?
Hey David! For the talking head, I used a Tamron 28-75. For the “short film” portion, I had used a Contax Zeiss 35mm 1.4 with an Anamorphic attachment, the Aivascope 1.5x
@@jordanadudek That is so interesting, thanks for a peek behind the camera! I’m always curious what glass people use, so I appreciate you replying 🤙
Great perspective Jordan. Healthy Priorities will keep you in the game a long time.
Thankful for you brother. Hoping to stay in this game with you until the end!! 💪🏻
Thank you Jordan, I love you too. And like you, I love my filmmaking. When I started this job, everything was very exciting and full of fun. Until I was exhausted from work, sometimes I felt like hating myself and the job I was doing. It was a difficult time indeed. I feel like I'm lost and not happy with making movies anymore. I had a dialogue with myself, rediscovered the moment I first picked up the camera and decided to pursue filmmaking. And just like you share in this video, I realized, my work and passion for filmmaking shouldn't be my whole life. I need to make time for other important things too. And I think when we have experiences outside of work, that makes it possible to make a good movie. Take care and be happy, my friend!
Ahh man, I'm sorry I'm responding to this late, but thank you for your vulnerability in sharing. I think we all can struggle with getting wrapped up in the filmmaking pursuit. I still do it all the time. Hope you're doing well and growing in finding that healthy balance.
Very powerful message indeed to hear. Thank you. PS. What mic are you using. Sounds great.
Thank you for watching! I used the DJI wireless mics with a standard Lav mic. Nothing special! Just a little EQ juice from Davinci 😂
These videos are so inspiring 🔥
Thank you so much for watching, and glad to hear the message resonated with you!
@@jordanadudek it sure did 🙌
I am getting so frustrated recently because I am so focus on what I am doing, on what I am trying to learn and master and work, that I usually end up losing myself, losing my free time, all I have to spare with my loved ones. This is really something that pulls out of you a lot, it gives also a lot but It requires a lot of stress, hard work and passione. Sometimes thats too much for me, I feel I cant get over it and I dont want to continue on this path. Then I find videos like yours and I dont feel alone, I feel that I can work on it and pursue my passion without losing myself and all the things I love. Thank you Jordan!
I agree that this field can really take a lot out of you, because it’s not something you can “clock in and out” of. Of course, some can find the balance quicker than others, but I’m with you. I have an “all-in” mentality which can cause other things to suffer. You’re definitely not alone in this feeling. Talking about it and asking for help is the first step, for both of us!
Love the message bro. Made me feel something that I haven't felt in a while.
Thanks for watching brother! Glad it resonated with you 💪🏻
Bro this video reached me at the perfect time, I’ve just started making my first short film and have so many ideas for it including great scenes and shots, but obviously that’s in my head, I’ve found it’s a lot harder to do it in the real word and to get the shots I wanted mostly because of my lack of equipment and stuff. Thanks for this though it’s already inspired me to look for the positives and not be too disappointed with my first film as I obviously wanted it to be great to show my family and friends, but thanks to your video I am just going to try to embrace it as the first step in my filmmaking journey, and to not force it to overshadow the rest of my life or my mood if it’s not exactly what I wanted. Thanks man sorry for the long comment but I really appreciated this video ❤
Man, I love that this message reached you. It sincerely means the world. Don't let the journey get you down either. It has plenty of ups and downs, but we are all in this together!
I'm at this point in my life and filmmaking career and realized this a few years ago, its changed my life and way of thinking and Im glad it did. Thanks for the the reminder man, at times it's very easy to jump back onto those tracks but they're often short lived. Take care my man
I’m super glad this message reached you! And you’re right, I need a reminder almost daily that any career won’t fulfill me. Good to connect with you!
I respect you so much for your vulnerability. Sometimes it takes people at the top to let you know it's not all that. I struggle also with balancing my own connection to the industry and trying not to let it consume me as it often does to us..... Thank you Jordan
Ahh man, I'm definitely not at the top haha. But at the same time, I would hope our mindsets wouldn't change even if we did make it to the "top". I hope you're doing well in trying to balance your career and life, I know I will be working on it for a while
Hi Jordan,
I just want to say thank you for such an insightful video. I'm not actually a filmmaker myself, but have been interested in such content for a while now.
I recently discovered your channel a few days ago, and really love your superb content.
But this video was something different, and the message it conveyed strangely resonated with me, despite the fact I'm not even a filmmaker (yet?).
Maybe it was becacuse there were some things you said in this video that could be applied outside of filmmaking.
Anyway, once again, thanks for this video and all the best for your future endeavors!
Wow, thank you so much for this indepth comment! Super happy you’ve watched a few of the videos so far!
I’m really hoping to just help as many people as I can, whether you’re a filmmaker or not! I could dive into some of the gear and tutorial side of things, which I’ll probably do at some point, but I feel like speaking to the emotional/spiritual side of being a creator can be more helpful for some.
Again, really happy you’re here, and I love to know that this message helped you!
Thank you so much for making this video! I was searching for sony fx3's reviews and I'm so lucky that I clicked on this video.
I finally saw someone who had similar feelings about filmmaking.
Thank you for watching! It’s definitely easy to get wrapped up in the views and trying to get other’s approval. We’re all in this together 😃
i feel this in my bones with content creation. it's so hard not to focus so much on the results instead of just focusing on the art of it all.
Spot on! We should just focus more on the art and the message we are trying to convey. It’s too easy to get wrapped up in the numbers game tho
What an impactful message 👏 Very well spoken!
Glad you watched and happy that you’re here!
How do you record audio !?
Hey! I used the DJI wireless mics for this video, and just used a Lav mic taped to my shirt!
@@jordanadudek ok Dji plus a lav.
Allow life to happen with you, not without you - wow thats power!
Thank you for watching! Glad this message resonated with you 💪🏻
What a joke....
You good bro?
@@jordanadudek All good. That video is depressing bro. Creating content and telling stories shouldn't be depressing. Of course you want to do a good job, of course you want every job to take you to that next level. Ask all the great directors and directors of photography how each job is a challenge and that they think they see way as you. But you seem like you're about to have breakdown
@@contentm3893 I hear you man. And maybe I wasn’t clear enough in the video. I love creating content and telling stories. There’s just some ugly pride that can come out at times that comes alongside filmmaking. That’s all I was trying to communicate. Filmmaking is a part of life, not life itself. I tend to get those things flipped in my life, and I was trying to help anyone else who may have had that flipped in their own life too. Sorry that I didn’t make that clear enough ✌🏻
Beautiful message 🔥
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻

I'm so glad this message reached you! It's still something I have to tell myself daily, as filmmaking can be really easy to get wrapped up in. Can't wait to see the films you make!
