So Pluto was demoted from a planet to a dwarf planet and was given the number 134340, so BTS seem to be exploring loss of identity, the feeling of not being good enough, and unexpected demotion or abandonment (can also be a breakup) by using Pluto's history as a metaphor. They also use a smart reference from Greek mythology intertwined again with astronomy when they say "Would it be really that you’ve found Eris" because Eris is another dwarf planet and actually scientist discovering Eris is what led them to believe Pluto to be a dwarf planet. Eris is also the goddess of strife and rivalry in Greek mythology so they in a way are painting Eris, both the planet and the goddess, as the entity/the other person/ their rival that created this strain and chaos between their relationship and causes the demotion.
I actually think the production of this song is pure genius - the way it implies the emptiness of space, the appearing and disappearing sound of orbiting another body, and the flute like something on the periphery hovering around but largely ignored…. genuinely one of my favourite songs.
Pluto was demoted as a planet in 2006 I believe. So one day it's called Pluto, the next assigned the number classification of 134340. Bts cleverly uses this metaphorically throughout the lyrics associating it with a relationship/breakup.
"Pluto has been given a new name to reflect its new status as a dwarf planet. On Sept. 7, the former 9th planet was assigned the asteroid number 134340 by the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the official organization responsible for collecting data about asteroids and comets in our solar system.2006. szept. 11."
When I discovered that this track was in their catalogue as I listened to the full album "Love Yourself: Tear" for the first time, I was mindblown. Such cool concept and metaphors on a banging track, with clever wordplay and a unique take on loss of identity and heartbreak. My family and I love to do jam sessions for fun when we gather together and the genres we go for usually are Italian folk, blues, Latin rock and bossa nova. When I heard 134340 I felt this sense of familiarity for some of the influences on this track are what I've been hearing since prior to my birth 😂 I've got so many favourite songs by them that I stopped counting. However, I'll have to give this song the crown as the one that strokes my heart the deepest. It not only satisfies my tastes musically, lyrically, conceptually, production-wise and so on, but it also recollects memories and familiar sensations.134340 might probably be my ultimate favourite song by BTS to this day.
Sometimes BTS's lyrics are pretty hard to decipher since they're very poetic and wordplay-heavy. This song is part of their album, Love Yourself: Tear which mainly talks about the darker sides of love. 134340 is an asteroid number of the dwarf planet, Pluto that lost its status as a planet in the solar system. This song, 134340 is a big whole metaphor of how a person pours all their efforts and love into someone (I just keep orbiting around you) to only to be forgotten in the end. My favourite line was from RM's verse, "Us is just a plural of U" The person on the recieving end only cared about themselves while the giver spent all their love until they had none for themselves. It's really clever but the meaning is pitiful and sad. The giver looses their name and identity after changing themselves for that person. After being forgotten, they feel lost and confused because they just separated from whoever they spent all their love on. The flute and the echo in the background vocals gives out this other wordly feeling and melancholy which makes this song a masterpiece.
134340 is the asteroid number of the star, previously known as the 9th planet Pluto... so they are basically saying you forget me, am not important anymore, once a planet of the solar system, now am just a rock.
According to 134340 Lyrics Analysis and Interpretation "This song is about Pluto, a massive body in our solar system which fell into hard times. Discovered in 1930, Pluto was initially classified as the 9th planet of our solar system but later on got reclassified as 134340, a dwarf planet. Pluto or 134340, here in this song is used as a metaphor for alienation of an individual from the community. This can also be interpreted as a situation where the speaker is asking their significant other on why they decided to break off things. The speaker refers to themselves as the Pluto and the sun is their lover or someone who is very important to them but has left them. Even though their significant other had decided to end things, the speaker feels that their life still revolves around that person."
The song instrumental is such a Vibe but the Lyrics are so meaning. Seriously, BTS doesn't miss. Your reaction and feelings on how to be feeling is so on point. Great Reaction As Always
Please react to Muish' translation of the lyrics! Their translation is on wordpress, and it's so good! Rather than a direct translation, Muish expands on the rhymes, alliterations, double and triple meanings that are found in the Korean lyrics. I think you could get such a good analysis by checking those lyrics out! I'd love to hear your input!
The song is a metaphor. It starts with the former planet Pluto which now has had its significance discarded. Pluto no longer is in the sun's planetary collection of orbits, but now is condemned to be a rock continuing to namelessly circling the very sun which had defined its importance. The metaphor is to a person being pushed out of a relationship unable to do much other than wallow in new-found insignificance. The world of the discarded person tends to revolve around the other anonymously and without importance. Aspects of the person that once were salient things to recognize remain, but they no longer are worthy of more than incidental invested time.
you should know by now BTS and their music how deep they can go with their lyrics, Army already explain in their comments, hope you can read them… but thanks for taking your time for BTS and us Army. :)
