If all you know of Kansas is Carry On or Dust in the Wind then you’ve never really heard Kansas. Those two songs paid the bills, but the first 3 albums are very prog
You guys are finally opening up the Kansas can of worms. It only took almost 45 years! I looked for reactions to this song and found only one by the Indian couple maybe a year ago. DOWN THE ROAD off of this same album/cd is a banger. Try that one and Sparks of the Tempest off of the Point of Know Return album. Another long one comparable to Song for America is NO ONE TOGETHER off of the Audio Visions album. First 7 albums are the best or the ones with Steve Walsh before the first time he left the band.
A lot of really good songs from Kansas. "The Wall", "Born on Wing of Steel" are a couple of my favs. Also something you may want to check out, Steve Walsh does vocals on a couple of Steve Hackett (of Genesis) songs from his second solo album (1978). "Racing in A" & "Narnia". Both are pretty short though, so maybe a two-fer reaction? 😊
Thanks for considering Kansas. They deserve more attention than they have received. For example, their main vocalist, Steve Walsh is incredible. He is considered by many as one of the great rock singers of this era. I highly recommend "Journey From Mariabronne" which is an astounding composition in either the studio or their live version from "Two For the Show" album. Also "Angels Have Fallen," "Miracles Out of Nowhere," and their only blues track where Steve absolutely kills it called "Lonely Street."
Their masterpiece of masterpieces(although some Kansas fans might say " No One Together "). Kerry Livgren came up with the song while flying in a plane one day(see the Kansas documentary " Miracles Out Of Nowhere " and Livgren's autobiography " Seeds Of Change "(Livgren has a solo album by that name also) for more details). Lyrically, a brief synopsis of the history of America. Musically, despite the keyboard theatrics of Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren, and Robby Steinhardt's violin excellence, the star of this song is bassist Dave Hope(and Livgren for writing it). Superb vocals as usual. Other rock artists that use violin(but not as extensively as Kansas): King Crimson Gentle Giant ELO does also, with cellos. RIP Robby Steinhardt
Add U.K. to that list as well. Also, Dixie Dregs, aka.the Dregs. Fantastic band, rock/jazz/fusion/country/classical/progressive.....they are unique and on a whole other level of their own!
This song has always been King for me. I'm a bass player, so as soon as I heard that bass, I was sold, done, put it in ink. Still my favorite track from Kansas.
I have been a fan from their start. Can't possibly pick a favorite song from all their albums. However, I've always had a soft spot for this one. Gives me a Big Smile, a tear of Joy. Wish the song would never end.
Another Kerry Livgren gem, I first heard it in 1978 when I bought their brilliant live album "Two for the show" & this was the opener, what a way to open a Kansas gig, loved it instantly. I can't speak more highly of these guys, incredible musicianship & great compositions. A few more suggestions: Lamplight Symphony, Paradox, Lonely wind & Nobody's home. Cheers.
My Dad hexed me with a musical curse. Seriously, i love music just as much as him. I know half of what i know because of him. He passed away in 1993. RIP, Dad. Still listening to great music!!

Excellent reaction as usual! One of my favorite "prog albums" back in the 70s. Excellent title track, but my two favorites are Incomudro and Lamplight Symphony. Highly recommend!
Hey Brandon, I’m glad to hear Kansas again. They’ve got many more great hits just waiting for you. A couple suggestions are “…Angels Have Fallen” from the Monolith album and “Portrait (He Knew)” from the Point of Know Return. I think they’re ones you’d like. I saw other suggestions for Spock’s Beard and Glass Hammer. Both excellent prog bands. Yes’ current singer Jon Davison used to be with Glass Hammer. Years ago when I first listened to Glass Hammer, I thought it was Jon Anderson singing.
@@retroreactions.... don't think you've done any Heart; highly recommend doing the entire Dreamboat Annie album, very different experience than just picking off the hit songs, and only 40 minutes total
I was 15 in 75, So I feel ya...:)...Nam had just ended, The bicentennial was right around the corner, I lived in philly and the Flydogs won their second Stanley Cup...I've never felt that great again...:(...
Kansas always played intelligent music that made you think. Theirs was one of the better concerts. I think it was 78 at Veterans Memorial it may have been a sellout? I was kind of inebriated. Lol But not so much as I don't remember Rick Wakeman making a surprise guest appearance for a few songs. There he was Cape flying around while he played surrounded by multiple keyboards. And the Kansas keyboard player also playing surrounded keyboards while dancing. Non-Stop. I don't know that there's a Kansas Song That Doesn't feature the violin. ✌️ 🤠🏞️🐂
I'm a reverse Dorothy discovering Kansas with you, and if you played to me an edit of this without the vocals, I might guess it was something by ELP in the "Tarkus" phase. The keyboards were very Keith Emerson-like (or maybe like Jürgen Fritz of Triumvirat, who was often accused of being an Emerson imitator, but was also said to occasionally be better than the original). When you get to listen to "Eruption/Stones of Years" you'll understand what I mean, it was the first thing I was reminded of. The vocals reminded me of Franco Mussida (or was it Flavio Premoli?) of Premiata Forneria Marconi in their English-language songs (and PFM also used a lot of violins), which is only logical, because ELP and PFM *mutually* influenced each other (and being able to influence ELP is saying something!). For these reasons, I found that "Cheyenne Anthem" sounded more original, but then again, if Kansas was influenced in this one, then the band chose its influences very well! It's a great song! I'm not sure I'd also give it the Epic Platinum Award myself in your place, but I'd certainly give it 4 or 5 golden records.
So glad you checked this one out, one of my favorites. You nailed it on your reaction. Miracles out of Nowhere (MOON) and The Wall are worthy tracks to consider next. SO many deep cuts.to choose from with Kansas.

When prog rock is played by americans. Genuine prog with its true american flavor. I love them so much. I hope you'll keep on digging into their work, above all the 1970's one. Other US prog bands I'd love to see you try : Spock's Beard with Walking On The Wind (I'm a sucker for its closing section and its mighty mix of mellotron choir and bass pedals ! Raaaaaaah) and Glass Hammer with So Close, So Far (pretty strong Yes feels)
@@retroreactions.... As I told you a few days ago, the live album Two For The Show contains a lot of their epic songs (some may not be very long but epic by their load of sharp musicianship) and imo are all superior to their album version. Kansas goes between more melodic soft rock and like this progressive. Great song. Very organ and bass driven. If you like organ driven music, Rick Wakeman from Yes did some solo albums, one from 1975 called “The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table” and then of course we start to get into jazz fusion rock with Return To Forever, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty. “Incumdro - Hymn to the Atman” is Kansas’ most prog song.
Virgin land of forest green,
Dark and stormy plains, here all life abounds
Sunlit valley, mountain fields,
Unseen in the rain, here all life abounds
No man rules this land, no human hand has soiled this paradise
Waiting patiently, so much to see, so rich in Earth's delights
Painted desert, sequined sky,
Stars that fill the night, here all life abounds
Rivers flowing to the sea,
Sunshine pure and bright, here all life abounds
No man rules this land, no human hand has soiled this paradise
Waiting patiently, so much to see, so rich in Earth's delights
So the maiden lies in waiting for the sails to reach the shore
Land of beauty and abundance, innocent, you opened wide your door
Wanderers found the waiting
Treasure, full of gifts beyond their measure
Milk and honey for our pleasure
Across the sea there came a multitude, sailing ships upon the wave
Filled with visions of Utopia and the freedom that they crave
Ravage, plunder, see no wonder, rape and kill and tear asunder
Chop the forest, plow it under
Highways scar the mountainsides,
Buildings to the sky, people all around
So we rule this land, and her we stand upon our paradise
Dreaming of a place, our weary race is ready to rise
