Hey, hey, hey, it doesn't fit the Moon either! The fact that there's no air (and lower gravity) on the Moon doesn't mean that there should be no constant downwards acceleration during a jump. Where these kinds of jump _could_ instead happen is in a very dense medium, as if she was jumping underwater (on a sea floor?), being slightly less than buoyant. It would be possible for her to sink at a ~constant velocity.
The problem with her "running" is she doesn't move when she does it. she moves her arms, but her shoulders stay stock still, no rising or shifting, it's almost like she's being held up by a harness and just sliding her feet around in the air.
If I had to guess that shot was done with a carpet being pulled by a vehicle. The same thing is done in marvel's Civil War, but the stuntmen in that are running on the carpet as it is pulled, giving it that authentic motion.

especially when th run begins, It just feels like shee's either taking really long strides in her frictionless, zero-g, vaccum or just sliding along, and her body isn't telegraphing her legs moving which only makes it look worse.

I'm pretty sure her god powered eagle wings wouldn't have knocked those guards sideways; I'm pretty sure given Diana's speed and mass they would have cut through the guards, severing their torsos from their legs.
Or have the wings turn somewhat perpendicular to the ground with a forward flap as she lands, serving to both help slow her down while also knocking those two forward away from her. That both provides some visual explanation for her soft landing while also letting her defeat a couple of extra baddies.

@@shadowwolfie85 as mentioned in Jill's video of the cursed battle shoes, there is some merit to stilettos in the sense that there is space for movement/give/flexion under the bridge of the foot so you can run on the balls of your feet. Running in wedges gives no space for impact so it's like high-fiving the ground pretty hard with every step. They're both heels, so the rolling the ankle factor is applicable either way and the only logical solution is to provide normal shoes! That's my rant anyway lol
you can talk about the heels as much as you want, every time I see them in a movie my eye twitches and it's nice to see someone else feeling the absolutely visceral pain of wedge heel combat shoes

The movie should be realistic and there is this weird backheelkick ronaldinho gaucho style that never stops bothering me to my bones and soul. Atomic blonde for all the beautiful movie that is, also has some of that. And a director should be a problem solver, you could do some of the classic jackie chan underdog situation, jackie has to fight without shoes. Same but with woman in heels... she fight without them, a baddie step on her toes, she uses the heels in there hands as improv weapons : boom styleto or whatever on the eye. You could even go full Bond with a corset as a mutliple kali stick sheath, cyanide on her nails, mini gun lipstick and so on.
The body language always throws me. She tilts her head to the side instead of forward to denote determination and effort. Its a small thing but it just doesnt feel like something a person would really do
@@filthyclown8033 I still do the sound effect ("usually" only in my head) when I focus on something far away by closing one eye. I think I did it two weeks ago on the highway when I was trying to figure out my exit after they renumbered the exits I use.
@GiRayne caps', and us agent's, shield tosses still annoy me, its practically magnetic. I get this is basically a super power of captain america but there are zero ways to throw a shield forward and have it retract back to you. Now if it bounces multiple times and such I can see that more. But most of the time they dont do that.
@@TimeofRagnarok which is still inconsistent. Since sometimes it'll bounce and other times return. Deflection doesn't automatically imply complete reversal. Otherwise the shield would kill any shooter who shot at it lol. I'll admit though that an answer of "vibranium" is essentially saying "its magic" anyway. Its a pretty common copout catchall. But visually out still annoys me
I was thinking about Pacific Rim all along this video. Part of the magic of that movie was how heavy the jaegers felt. You could really feel each of their steps, not to mention their punches. Felt like a ton of iron impacting something equally massive and that was SO awesome!
Is this an uncanny valley of superhero physics? Too close to reality to feel comic (in the book sense) but too far from reality to feel like a classic action film.
No, uncanny valley is where somethings close enough but doesn't quite get across the finish line. From the clips, this is just "Hey, we don't know how superhero physics should work, so we're going to make up a bunch of stuff. Cool with you? No? Too bad."
@@jackielinde7568 The point of the 'uncanny valley' is that it is both too close for comfort and not close enough to be 'right'. I think Matthew's point was that if it was a bit _more_ unrealistic, it would be far enough away from real that it would leave the 'uncanny valley' and feel acceptable (as in cartoons, for example). Obviously, as well, if it was closer to realistic then it would just look real.
Yeah my issue is more how much it bounces around between the 2. If they had stayed in over the top comedy land it probably wouldn't bother me as much, but as Jill said, sometimes they do normal action where physics do apply. Pick one, either one, and I'm fine with it.
Your point about the "super hero landing" is perfect. It's overdone- but it's overdone because we've gotten a raft of movies where the aesthetic is to make it look like a person is LANDING when they land- and bending deeply at the knees and bracing yourself with a hand it the way to do that.
On the topic of Diana’s running, recently one of my track coaches had us try jogging in place while moving our arms faster than our legs. Our legs always ended up matching the speed of our arms. Maybe her running seems off because she doesn’t move her arms proportionately to the speed she’s going?
They help actors run at "super speed" by running on a tarp that is being pulled. It looks a bit odd but still real. This just looked like pure CG, which is why is looks so wrong.
@@canebro1 Right, and it can be done REALLY well. I remember Corridor Crew did a big breakdown of the tunnel chase during Captain America Civil War, where Black Panther is outrunning the convoy. The stuntman was really running at near to full speed, while *also* being pulled along on the tarp, and his long stride and obvious effort sold the shot. Whereas the shots Jill showed (I haven't seen WW84 yet) made it look like Godot was just kind of jogging in place in front of a greenscreen.
The best fight scene was the guard grappling Steve to get the gun away, and Steve's reaction literally being "woah cool move!" and then excitedly trying it himself later just like "awesome it worked!"
I've always maintained as a writer, that even a fantasy world has physics and if you lay out those laws of physics, no matter what they are, they can't be undermind once established.
The point of a fantasy world is that you can rewrite laws of nature as you see fit. They are still laws. You can't for example say a wizard runs out of mana and then later claim that wizards can't run out of mana. You can do loose things such as show that a fireball has impact force, as long as you stick to it, even if you don't explicitly define it.
I feel like her wedge heel sandle things are the reason that, during filming, they decided to make her very cha-cha-slide-ey because the actress probably couldn't move properly to do landings or running or anything.. (I assume.. I also am not over the wedge heel things)

It’s like they forgot the principles of squash and stretch. In older cartoons they over squashed and stretched characters to give the look of bound up springy energy in all their actions.
Okay, as someone who LIVED through the 80s... Um... those sandals... Yeah... They weren't a thing in the 80s. Not looking like someone cut a wedge sandal apart and fixed leather straps to it. Yeah, we had wedges, but they had hemp or some other material woven or macromiid as the top part. So, no... just no.

This reminds me of the fly a tank scene in the A Team. It’s a great scene. Two physicists did the math and found out that they got the math right. Even if you did not know that already, it felt real.
Hell, even the first Transformers movie had a decent understanding of weight, because that was a big deal that they talked about in the BTS features. How the speed and weight of the transformers felt, with the former shifting with the "proximity of the camera" and whatnot. Then eventually they just...stopped caring...about anything, really... -w-
MCU has the same issue with the nano tech stuff. Things stop being a series of intricate parts moving together and just become a fluid with sharp angles drawn on
Whats even worse is that wonder woman in the first movie would have never chosen those as proper combat wear. They had a whole scene where she didnt like trying on dresses because there was so little mobility, now we are supposed to believe a trained warrior who comes from a long line of trained warriors all decided heeled sandals were the best shoe for combat.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the running gag where Diana (and later, Surprise Cameo Person) tries to maintain her low profile by telling bystanders that her super-actions are unremarkable, suggesting that it's just her superior understanding of PHYSICS that allows her to throw people across a room or catch very heavy falling objects. I feel like it has the opposite effect, making the onscreen action even more unbelievable.

I agree with you on this Jill - we accept that superhero films have unbelievable things, but they must happen in a believable way in the universe. I'd really like you to look at the classic Street Fighter film. It's campy nonsense but actually it's really good - don't take it too seriously.
At least in the first movie when she skids about we can see she's sliding on her greaves or shield or something, having pushed herself off using superstrength. But you're right, how is she sliding towards those mall guys? Just a really wet floor and she's made it work for her?
Floor surfing. Old shoes with soles worn flat, a long tile hallway and a very wet mop. Get a good running start and jump when you get to the mopped area.
I would really love to hear your opinion on action in the old good Xena: the Warrior Princess series. It was ridiculous, sure, but often felt "plausible" enough, despite being absolutely unrealistic.
The one thing that always annoyed me in Xena and Hercules action scenes were the foam environments that got broken, and jumped, and just had no weight at all. I know why they did that but they still annoy me. 🙂

Jill, if I ever write some sort of sci-fi/fantasy story, you can be sure that all the ladies will be wearing the appropriate footwear. High heeled fight scenes are one of my pet peeves too. Would you ever consider talking about Black Widow's first fight scene in the Avengers? I love how she's practically barefoot, absolutely destroys everyone in the room, and then casually picks up her high heels. On that same note, Sydney's fight scene in the Alias pilot is fantastic, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
@GiRayne Alias is very formulaic, but I certainly enjoyed it, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. The first two seasons are fantastic, I skipped most of the third, and the fourth and fifth sort of went off the rails. (Actually, season 4 episode 5 is pretty good.) It does have some pretty good fight scenes, at least to my uncultured eyes.

Even if my suspension of disbelief was stretched and broken right from the first scene, I still found the film immensely entertaining and humorous throughout.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but this has alleviated some of my worries about it. I also agree that those shoes are stupid for fighting, I love my wedge sneakers, but there is a reason I don't wear them to the gym! (even if the "gym" is in my house) I hope you are your family are well!!!
No, she is giving it way too much grace. The tone is all over the place, character making dumb decisions, and the ending was just awful. And that doesn't even cover the whole consent/rape aspect nor the dangerous moral that trying to make yourself better is toxic.
Wonder Woman becomes a rapist, this is not depicted as a flaw on her part, it's framed as being perfectly fine. Characters regularly teleport. People don't act like people, they act like caricatures of people that don't actually exist but the news and twitter keeps telling you are everywhere. The amount of belief that has to be suspended is astronomical. A WW ONE pilot just hops into a fully fueled modern jet at a MUSEUM which has a runway, figures out how to operate everything in 5 seconds and instantly starts FLYING it, despite the fact he'd been DEAD for 70 YEARS. Then Wonder Woman decides she can turn jets invisible and promptly never does it again despite how useful it would be. THEN, they fly this jet from Washington to FUCKING EGYPT! Cause fuel is more of a suggestion. The core item of the movie, that ALL of this is revolving around, doesn't behave consistently. It's just random. The motivations of the bad guy just change randomly in the middle of the movie for no reason. Just for kicks, this movie contradicts the ENTIRE rest of the DCEU. Cheetah, the secondary villain, has zero motivation to become a villain and her not being liked by anyone except rapists (Don't worry, it's framed as bad when the MEN try it) is completely irrational as she's basically just a slightly awkward but otherwise completely normal and quite attractive woman. The movie however treats her like she's the most outcast outcast to ever cast out. This is set in the 80s, and you will forget that fact after the first 20 minutes of the movie. Just like the movie did. The message is you should never lie, but we know Wonder Woman IMMEDIATELY disappears from society and does nothing for the next 30 or so years, and STILL lies about being a super hero. Wonder Woman makes Bruce take back the wish that his parents weren't dead because she was just too incompetent. The entire WORLD was almost destroyed and nobody ever mentions it again. The bad guy almost destroyed the entire world very publicly and nothing happens, he's not even fined, he just fucks off back home (more teleporting) and nobody ever bothers with him. I could go on. There's just SO many problems with this movie on EVERY level. She really was too kind towards it. Sure, there's worse movies, but this is still a TERRIBLE movie. A movie doesn't have to be Troll 2 in order to be a complete pile of crap.

The iconic scene with Tony vs Bucky + Steve in Civil War worked really well because everything had the weight that you described as missing here. Definitely two examples of doing super hero action on opposite ends of believability
They definitely made his running less goofy in the Snyder Cut, enough to the point that I actually noted it, but still. cmon man. running is literally your thing. IT'S YOUR ONLY THING! the running was even better in the 1st season CW, and half the time he wasn't even actually running on set.

It has something to do with ummm being inspired by a culture I guess (I don't fully remember), and the explanation was understandable. You've done a great job of explaining this! :D It's one of those things that, for me, is a frequent problem in both superhero and wuxia films and it separates the ones that feel silly from the ones that feel genuinely epic and grand.

1:54 I don't fear flying, I just fear suddenly not flying... In all real seriousness, I think one thing holding back reality in flying/jumping scenes is a lack of forces. All the heroes that can fly (except maybe early Iron Man) just glide to the ground on their stunt wires and don't make a believable touchdown.
thanks to superman that went from jumping really high to levitating in the comics, without ever actually flying but then supergirl tv show explain the cape as a way to add stability in curves, even thought the curves should be instantaneous

Marvelous breakdown. I love your videos! I was about half way through the movie when I realized that Jenkins was not actually doing an homage to the 80s. She was actually trying to make a film as if she, and we, were still IN the 80s. This is why it didn't work for me. Most 80s action films don't age well under the microscope of 40 more years of film making developments. It's almost impossible to immerse yourself in because they're so dated that part of your brain enjoys the nostalgia of re-watching a movie you've seen but another part of your brain is saying "Oh, wow, that doesn't look as good as I remember it." This is how the entirety of this movie felt. It just didn't work for me, pulled me out of the film nearly every single scene. On the flip side, if she had made this film in the actual 80s we would have loved it back then but re-watching it today we'd look at it in the light of Nostalgia/NotAgingWell phenomena. THAT I could still praise, much like watching something like Cobra, or a Steven Segal film or Red Heat or Cyborg. But making it today, just feels like a grad student doing an exercise for an in-class project. Was really disappointed. And man, oh, man have I been ranting about those stupid wedge heels in action movies for about 10 years. Yeesh.
The one that always gets me is the "holding the chopper in place" bit from Captain America TWS. Yes, he looks fantastic, but his strength would have zero impact on that situation. The helicopter would just lift him up. It's so dumb. That, and EVERY TIME a strong character bends the barrel of a gun being held by a normie. No, he'd just pull it from their hands.
Or picks up a building. Buildings don't work like that! There is no part of a building which is strong enough for you to lift the building by it. It doesn't matter how strong you are (unless Superman also has the power to make building stronger, I guess...)
Agree entirely, although even though I am physicist by training I didn't realise my issue until watching your video. I have long held that superhero films would be better if they thought about physics, give the heroes real problems about how to use their powers. For example it doesn't mater how strong you are if the thing you are lifting can't support its own weight from where you are lifting

As for the whole movie, the story wasn't actually that bad, I think it could have had potential, but it was just way too long and got boring. My highlight of the entire movie was Pedro Pascal, love him. Also I immediately thought of you when I saw the shot of her shoes xDD makes the action scenes even less realistic
Whoa, a lot of this applies to animation too. Sometimes convincing follow-through and secondary animation seems to be pushed away in favour of “fluidity.” You end up with something floaty that pulls you out of what you’re watching
Good morning, or rather afternoon Where You Are. Bet it would totally be within your wheelhouse as a knowledgeable stunt performer to explain how one could simulate some bit of proper physical interaction in the scenes without destroying a live human being.
to be honest the physical simulation can be made by computers easilly, lord of the rings had simulated orc armies, simulating two cg characters hitting each other with real physics should be easy to do for a 200 million dollars movie
@@devforfun5618 there's a difference between the LotR armies and these close up combat shots. You need much less detailed simulations if there are 200 animated orcs hitting others. But you're still right, they should have done a much better job in this movie.

Thanks for the fun stuff you talk about in your videos Jill, and the enjoyable way you present it :) Thinking about the gold wings/guards scene: Watching that bit a few times in your video, I think the outer half of the wings were canted back, say 45deg 'ish'. I think that would produce a diagonally outward trajectory for the struck guards (ignoring the probable total annihilation of them, as pointed out by Redleg 137, to which you pointed out the movie's rating :) ), which would look like they were going sideways from the following camera's view. I know this is a question for Jill, but here's mine: Bladed weapons that swipe through people. A sword (unless magically imbued or composed of energised light from a magic crystal) will stop or slow down when it hits a human. Armour, clothes meat and bone each slow a blade down and in truth in most cases you'd spend your time hacking at a body rather than delivering clear swipes. Any blow that describes an uninterrupted parabola had just missed the target, or has at best just grazed it. That still seems sufficient for the relevant bad guy to fall over like a footballer and start filling in their life assurance claim though

The thing that annoys me most about the movie is the fact that she finds and uses the "upgraded" armour, which has wings, and THEN learns how to fly without it, THEN she gets her wings stripped off in the first fight she gets in, rendering the wings pointless! The whole flying thing felt like an asspull, as she has nowhere near as much power as a kryptonian, and she doesnt need to, i feel like if they made her new magical winged armour something that allows her to fly, not only would it be more unique to her character (she wont need to be a discount kryptonian), unique in terms of movement and choreography (more tools to play around with in fight scenes), it would make more sense as well. wow....you NAILED what it was that bothered me. I wasn't able to put my finger on it specifically or explain it, but it was literally exactly what you said....my brain subconsciously recognised "faaaakkkee" and my attention wandered onto other things while watching.
The answer is she can float and has had lots of practice, also she is a goddess. Her abilities and powers have never really been defined in comics by writers. Physic and wonder wonder and heels are a thing ala she is a goddess, thus not limited by human physic.
Very well put. It's particularly easy to spot in that mall scene where she throws the guy through the drum. Diana has superhuman strength, but the effect of throwing someone should still end up looking like the guy was thrown back. He should follow some sort of parabolic arc, not a straight line because there is an interface between the fantastical elements and the mundane. Once she lets go of the guy, he's no longer being acted on by superhuman power, he's being acted on by regular physics, but it doesn't look that way. Imagine that very same scene except it was a Jedi using the Force on someone, or a wizard knocking him back with a spell. The straight line motion would feel much less awkward in those situations, because we intuitively get that the "magic" still could be at work on the guy while he's traveling.
A lot of the audience for King Kong 2005 said that some scenes looked wrong, but couldn't give details about how they did. It was later realized that when characters ran underneath dinosaurs, they were not properly dimmed in the dinosaurs' shadows.
1:47 "Managed to keep it's feet on the ground." About that. Mass, even if she's as strong as a tank, she doesn't have the same mass as a tank. So, picking one up like that. Okay, remember when the Flintstones' car fell over, because of the rack of Brontosaurus ribs on the window tray? Yeah, balance is a thing. You can't hang a lasso out behind her combat wedges to compensate for the weight of a tank. Grabbed by the front corner. And picked straight up, like that.

It’s not just yaw and pitch/stability, it’s that there’s no acceleration- the jumps have her moving at constant velocity, and not accelerating at 9.8 m/s^2. It’s Wonder Woman on the moon in a frictionless vacuum.

Hey, hey, hey, it doesn't fit the Moon either! The fact that there's no air (and lower gravity) on the Moon doesn't mean that there should be no constant downwards acceleration during a jump. Where these kinds of jump _could_ instead happen is in a very dense medium, as if she was jumping underwater (on a sea floor?), being slightly less than buoyant. It would be possible for her to sink at a ~constant velocity.
The moon has gravity tho, so she would still travel in a parabolic arc, it just might not be that noticeable.

The problem with her "running" is she doesn't move when she does it. she moves her arms, but her shoulders stay stock still, no rising or shifting, it's almost like she's being held up by a harness and just sliding her feet around in the air.
If I had to guess that shot was done with a carpet being pulled by a vehicle. The same thing is done in marvel's Civil War, but the stuntmen in that are running on the carpet as it is pulled, giving it that authentic motion.

especially when th run begins, It just feels like shee's either taking really long strides in her frictionless, zero-g, vaccum or just sliding along, and her body isn't telegraphing her legs moving which only makes it look worse.

I'm pretty sure her god powered eagle wings wouldn't have knocked those guards sideways; I'm pretty sure given Diana's speed and mass they would have cut through the guards, severing their torsos from their legs.

Or maybe they could duck? Or they probably shouldn't even be in the scene at all.
Or have the wings turn somewhat perpendicular to the ground with a forward flap as she lands, serving to both help slow her down while also knocking those two forward away from her. That both provides some visual explanation for her soft landing while also letting her defeat a couple of extra baddies.

@@shadowwolfie85 as mentioned in Jill's video of the cursed battle shoes, there is some merit to stilettos in the sense that there is space for movement/give/flexion under the bridge of the foot so you can run on the balls of your feet. Running in wedges gives no space for impact so it's like high-fiving the ground pretty hard with every step. They're both heels, so the rolling the ankle factor is applicable either way and the only logical solution is to provide normal shoes! That's my rant anyway lol
you can talk about the heels as much as you want, every time I see them in a movie my eye twitches and it's nice to see someone else feeling the absolutely visceral pain of wedge heel combat shoes

@@JillBearup how about just catwoman on tdkr. A 10 mins video on how stupid that is. Like she is not even a superhuman. The movie should be realistic and there is this weird backheelkick ronaldinho gaucho style that never stops bothering me to my bones and soul. Atomic blonde for all the beautiful movie that is, also has some of that. And a director should be a problem solver, you could do some of the classic jackie chan underdog situation, jackie has to fight without shoes. Same but with woman in heels... she fight without them, a baddie step on her toes, she uses the heels in there hands as improv weapons : boom styleto or whatever on the eye. You could even go full Bond with a corset as a mutliple kali stick sheath, cyanide on her nails, mini gun lipstick and so on.
The slow motion running toward the camera looked like she was doing the slow-mo herself.
Like when I was a kid and everyone in our neighborhood would pretend to run and jump like the Bionic Woman and the Six Million Dollar Man.

The body language always throws me. She tilts her head to the side instead of forward to denote determination and effort. Its a small thing but it just doesnt feel like something a person would really do

I get this is basically a super power of captain america but there are zero ways to throw a shield forward and have it retract back to you.
Now if it bounces multiple times and such I can see that more. But most of the time they dont do that.

I was thinking about Pacific Rim all along this video. Part of the magic of that movie was how heavy the jaegers felt. You could really feel each of their steps, not to mention their punches. Felt like a ton of iron impacting something equally massive and that was SO awesome!

Is this an uncanny valley of superhero physics? Too close to reality to feel comic (in the book sense) but too far from reality to feel like a classic action film.
No, uncanny valley is where somethings close enough but doesn't quite get across the finish line. From the clips, this is just "Hey, we don't know how superhero physics should work, so we're going to make up a bunch of stuff. Cool with you? No? Too bad."
@@jackielinde7568 The point of the 'uncanny valley' is that it is both too close for comfort and not close enough to be 'right'. I think Matthew's point was that if it was a bit _more_ unrealistic, it would be far enough away from real that it would leave the 'uncanny valley' and feel acceptable (as in cartoons, for example). Obviously, as well, if it was closer to realistic then it would just look real.

Yeah my issue is more how much it bounces around between the 2. If they had stayed in over the top comedy land it probably wouldn't bother me as much, but as Jill said, sometimes they do normal action where physics do apply.

Your point about the "super hero landing" is perfect. It's overdone- but it's overdone because we've gotten a raft of movies where the aesthetic is to make it look like a person is LANDING when they land- and bending deeply at the knees and bracing yourself with a hand it the way to do that.
On the topic of Diana’s running, recently one of my track coaches had us try jogging in place while moving our arms faster than our legs. Our legs always ended up matching the speed of our arms. Maybe her running seems off because she doesn’t move her arms proportionately to the speed she’s going?
that's 100% probably it, it doesn't feel like she's taking long enough strides to justify her arms moving at just an easy pace
And her legs don't match the distance she's traveling.
They help actors run at "super speed" by running on a tarp that is being pulled. It looks a bit odd but still real. This just looked like pure CG, which is why is looks so wrong.
@@canebro1 Right, and it can be done REALLY well. I remember Corridor Crew did a big breakdown of the tunnel chase during Captain America Civil War, where Black Panther is outrunning the convoy. The stuntman was really running at near to full speed, while *also* being pulled along on the tarp, and his long stride and obvious effort sold the shot. Whereas the shots Jill showed (I haven't seen WW84 yet) made it look like Godot was just kind of jogging in place in front of a greenscreen.

The best fight scene was the guard grappling Steve to get the gun away, and Steve's reaction literally being "woah cool move!" and then excitedly trying it himself later just like "awesome it worked!"

I've always maintained as a writer, that even a fantasy world has physics and if you lay out those laws of physics, no matter what they are, they can't be undermind once established.
The point of a fantasy world is that you can rewrite laws of nature as you see fit. They are still laws.
You can't for example say a wizard runs out of mana and then later claim that wizards can't run out of mana.
You can do loose things such as show that a fireball has impact force, as long as you stick to it, even if you don't explicitly define it.
I feel like her wedge heel sandle things are the reason that, during filming, they decided to make her very cha-cha-slide-ey because the actress probably couldn't move properly to do landings or running or anything..

So I'm not mad wonder woman wears heels. But i have no clue why they had to keep outfit consistency for this movie, it wasnt necessary. She's almost the same height as Chris pine so it's weird
It’s like they forgot the principles of squash and stretch. In older cartoons they over squashed and stretched characters to give the look of bound up springy energy in all their actions.
Okay, as someone who LIVED through the 80s... Um... those sandals... Yeah... They weren't a thing in the 80s. Not looking like someone cut a wedge sandal apart and fixed leather straps to it. Yeah, we had wedges, but they had hemp or some other material woven or macromiid as the top part.

This reminds me of the fly a tank scene in the A Team. It’s a great scene. Two physicists did the math and found out that they got the math right. Even if you did not know that already, it felt real.

Hell, even the first Transformers movie had a decent understanding of weight, because that was a big deal that they talked about in the BTS features. How the speed and weight of the transformers felt, with the former shifting with the "proximity of the camera" and whatnot. Then eventually they just...stopped caring...about anything, really... -w-
In fairness, if I worked on that set, I'd stop caring after the first two or three, too.
The part where starscream transforms in the city is the best
MCU has the same issue with the nano tech stuff. Things stop being a series of intricate parts moving together and just become a fluid with sharp angles drawn on
I wince whenever I see those sandles. They look like genuine torture devices.
Whats even worse is that wonder woman in the first movie would have never chosen those as proper combat wear. They had a whole scene where she didnt like trying on dresses because there was so little mobility, now we are supposed to believe a trained warrior who comes from a long line of trained warriors all decided heeled sandals were the best shoe for combat.
They make my ankles hurt whenever I see them. Break or sprain, pick your poison.

The irony of people repeating that corsets were torture devices, but then being totally okay with a woman fighting in heels.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the running gag where Diana (and later, Surprise Cameo Person) tries to maintain her low profile by telling bystanders that her super-actions are unremarkable, suggesting that it's just her superior understanding of PHYSICS that allows her to throw people across a room or catch very heavy falling objects. I feel like it has the opposite effect, making the onscreen action even more unbelievable.

At least in the first movie when she skids about we can see she's sliding on her greaves or shield or something, having pushed herself off using superstrength. But you're right, how is she sliding towards those mall guys? Just a really wet floor and she's made it work for her?
Floor surfing. Old shoes with soles worn flat, a long tile hallway and a very wet mop. Get a good running start and jump when you get to the mopped area.
I would really love to hear your opinion on action in the old good Xena: the Warrior Princess series. It was ridiculous, sure, but often felt "plausible" enough, despite being absolutely unrealistic.

They always looked solid and that stuff was clashing.
The one thing that always annoyed me in Xena and Hercules action scenes were the foam environments that got broken, and jumped, and just had no weight at all.

Jill, if I ever write some sort of sci-fi/fantasy story, you can be sure that all the ladies will be wearing the appropriate footwear. High heeled fight scenes are one of my pet peeves too. Would you ever consider talking about Black Widow's first fight scene in the Avengers? I love how she's practically barefoot, absolutely destroys everyone in the room, and then casually picks up her high heels.
On that same note, Sydney's fight scene in the Alias pilot is fantastic, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
@GiRayne Alias is very formulaic, but I certainly enjoyed it, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. The first two seasons are fantastic, I skipped most of the third, and the fourth and fifth sort of went off the rails. (Actually, season 4 episode 5 is pretty good.) It does have some pretty good fight scenes, at least to my uncultured eyes.

Really appreciate this, captures all the things that bothered me about the fight scenes that I didn't know how to articulate.
I assumed that all of Wonder Woman's "frictionless" movements was her learning to fly; even subconsciously.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but this has alleviated some of my worries about it. I also agree that those shoes are stupid for fighting, I love my wedge sneakers, but there is a reason I don't wear them to the gym! (even if the "gym" is in my house) I hope you are your family are well!!!
No, she is giving it way too much grace. The tone is all over the place, character making dumb decisions, and the ending was just awful. And that doesn't even cover the whole consent/rape aspect nor the dangerous moral that trying to make yourself better is toxic.
Wonder Woman becomes a rapist, this is not depicted as a flaw on her part, it's framed as being perfectly fine. Characters regularly teleport. People don't act like people, they act like caricatures of people that don't actually exist but the news and twitter keeps telling you are everywhere. The amount of belief that has to be suspended is astronomical. A WW ONE pilot just hops into a fully fueled modern jet at a MUSEUM which has a runway, figures out how to operate everything in 5 seconds and instantly starts FLYING it, despite the fact he'd been DEAD for 70 YEARS. Then Wonder Woman decides she can turn jets invisible and promptly never does it again despite how useful it would be. THEN, they fly this jet from Washington to FUCKING EGYPT! Cause fuel is more of a suggestion.
The core item of the movie, that ALL of this is revolving around, doesn't behave consistently. It's just random. The motivations of the bad guy just change randomly in the middle of the movie for no reason. Just for kicks, this movie contradicts the ENTIRE rest of the DCEU. Cheetah, the secondary villain, has zero motivation to become a villain and her not being liked by anyone except rapists (Don't worry, it's framed as bad when the MEN try it) is completely irrational as she's basically just a slightly awkward but otherwise completely normal and quite attractive woman. The movie however treats her like she's the most outcast outcast to ever cast out.
This is set in the 80s, and you will forget that fact after the first 20 minutes of the movie. Just like the movie did. The message is you should never lie, but we know Wonder Woman IMMEDIATELY disappears from society and does nothing for the next 30 or so years, and STILL lies about being a super hero. Wonder Woman makes Bruce take back the wish that his parents weren't dead because she was just too incompetent. The entire WORLD was almost destroyed and nobody ever mentions it again. The bad guy almost destroyed the entire world very publicly and nothing happens, he's not even fined, he just fucks off back home (more teleporting) and nobody ever bothers with him.
I could go on. There's just SO many problems with this movie on EVERY level. She really was too kind towards it. Sure, there's worse movies, but this is still a TERRIBLE movie. A movie doesn't have to be Troll 2 in order to be a complete pile of crap.

Her swinging through the mall on the gold rope almost looks like there never were any Spider-man movies in the last 19 years.
The iconic scene with Tony vs Bucky + Steve in Civil War worked really well because everything had the weight that you described as missing here. Definitely two examples of doing super hero action on opposite ends of believability

They definitely made his running less goofy in the Snyder Cut, enough to the point that I actually noted it, but still. cmon man. running is literally your thing. IT'S YOUR ONLY THING! the running was even better in the 1st season CW, and half the time he wasn't even actually running on set.

It has something to do with ummm being inspired by a culture I guess (I don't fully remember), and the explanation was understandable. I personally didn't like the running cause it looked weird, but after learning about why he runs like that, I accepted it.

It's one of those things that, for me, is a frequent problem in both superhero and wuxia films and it separates the ones that feel silly from the ones that feel genuinely epic and grand.

In all real seriousness, I think one thing holding back reality in flying/jumping scenes is a lack of forces. All the heroes that can fly (except maybe early Iron Man) just glide to the ground on their stunt wires and don't make a believable touchdown.

3:29 Everytime she slides the kid into the teddy bear I feel as though the same move could crack the kid's skull on the floor. Good vid. Also, we should always talk about the footwear. I have, ever since my son's 1995 Catwoman figure could not stand up. George Perez drew Wonder Woman in practical boots. She stood in them firmly and gracefully just fine.

I was about half way through the movie when I realized that Jenkins was not actually doing an homage to the 80s. She was actually trying to make a film as if she, and we, were still IN the 80s. This is why it didn't work for me. Most 80s action films don't age well under the microscope of 40 more years of film making developments. It's almost impossible to immerse yourself in because they're so dated that part of your brain enjoys the nostalgia of re-watching a movie you've seen but another part of your brain is saying "Oh, wow, that doesn't look as good as I remember it."
This is how the entirety of this movie felt. It just didn't work for me, pulled me out of the film nearly every single scene.
On the flip side, if she had made this film in the actual 80s we would have loved it back then but re-watching it today we'd look at it in the light of Nostalgia/NotAgingWell phenomena. THAT I could still praise, much like watching something like Cobra, or a Steven Segal film or Red Heat or Cyborg. But making it today, just feels like a grad student doing an exercise for an in-class project.

Its like superman, you're told his powers, then he picks up a car from the door and wonder why the door doesn't come off in his hand.
The one that always gets me is the "holding the chopper in place" bit from Captain America TWS. Yes, he looks fantastic, but his strength would have zero impact on that situation. The helicopter would just lift him up. It's so dumb.
That, and EVERY TIME a strong character bends the barrel of a gun being held by a normie. No, he'd just pull it from their hands.
Or picks up a building. Buildings don't work like that! There is no part of a building which is strong enough for you to lift the building by it. It doesn't matter how strong you are (unless Superman also has the power to make building stronger, I guess...)
I love how Diana is worried about bullets but tanks a headbut from a man who can smash mountains by accident.
Agree entirely, although even though I am physicist by training I didn't realise my issue until watching your video. I have long held that superhero films would be better if they thought about physics, give the heroes real problems about how to use their powers. For example it doesn't mater how strong you are if the thing you are lifting can't support its own weight from where you are lifting

This makes so much sense, something about the action scenes bothered me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it, so thank you for this video! As for the whole movie, the story wasn't actually that bad, I think it could have had potential, but it was just way too long and got boring. My highlight of the entire movie was Pedro Pascal, love him. Also I immediately thought of you when I saw the shot of her shoes xDD makes the action scenes even less realistic
Whoa, a lot of this applies to animation too.
Sometimes convincing follow-through and secondary animation seems to be pushed away in favour of “fluidity.” You end up with something floaty that pulls you out of what you’re watching

Good morning, or rather afternoon Where You Are. Bet it would totally be within your wheelhouse as a knowledgeable stunt performer to explain how one could simulate some bit of proper physical interaction in the scenes without destroying a live human being.
to be honest the physical simulation can be made by computers easilly, lord of the rings had simulated orc armies, simulating two cg characters hitting each other with real physics should be easy to do for a 200 million dollars movie

You need much less detailed simulations if there are 200 animated orcs hitting others.
But you're still right, they should have done a much better job in this movie.

Thanks for the fun stuff you talk about in your videos Jill, and the enjoyable way you present it :) Thinking about the gold wings/guards scene: Watching that bit a few times in your video, I think the outer half of the wings were canted back, say 45deg 'ish'. I think that would produce a diagonally outward trajectory for the struck guards (ignoring the probable total annihilation of them, as pointed out by Redleg 137, to which you pointed out the movie's rating :) ), which would look like they were going sideways from the following camera's view. Just a musing, and not excusing the other dodgy physics in the film. Cheers from the Antipodes.

Now that you pointed them out, I will probably notice it in every superhero/action movie from here to eternity. So, thanks for that. I'm like you, though. It wasn't a great movie and it had some very real problems plot-wise, but I still love it. I'll still watch it when I feel like it. There were some great moments in it. Great video, btw. Thanks!

What is, in your opinion, the greatest sin in movie fight scenes? What egregious choreography sin do you see most often?
I know this is a question for Jill, but here's mine:
Bladed weapons that swipe through people. A sword (unless magically imbued or composed of energised light from a magic crystal) will stop or slow down when it hits a human. Armour, clothes meat and bone each slow a blade down and in truth in most cases you'd spend your time hacking at a body rather than delivering clear swipes. Any blow that describes an uninterrupted parabola had just missed the target, or has at best just grazed it. That still seems sufficient for the relevant bad guy to fall over like a footballer and start filling in their life assurance claim though

The thing that annoys me most about the movie is the fact that she finds and uses the "upgraded" armour, which has wings, and THEN learns how to fly without it, THEN she gets her wings stripped off in the first fight she gets in, rendering the wings pointless! The whole flying thing felt like an asspull, as she has nowhere near as much power as a kryptonian, and she doesnt need to, i feel like if they made her new magical winged armour something that allows her to fly, not only would it be more unique to her character (she wont need to be a discount kryptonian), unique in terms of movement and choreography (more tools to play around with in fight scenes), it would make more sense as well. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

The answer is she can float and has had lots of practice, also she is a goddess. Her abilities and powers have never really been defined in comics by writers. Physic and wonder wonder and heels are a thing ala she is a goddess, thus not limited by human physic.
what is this Diana obviously has super weightless superpower. Otherwise her high heels would hurt to much, specially on her feet.

Very well put. It's particularly easy to spot in that mall scene where she throws the guy through the drum. Diana has superhuman strength, but the effect of throwing someone should still end up looking like the guy was thrown back. He should follow some sort of parabolic arc, not a straight line because there is an interface between the fantastical elements and the mundane. Once she lets go of the guy, he's no longer being acted on by superhuman power, he's being acted on by regular physics, but it doesn't look that way. Imagine that very same scene except it was a Jedi using the Force on someone, or a wizard knocking him back with a spell. The straight line motion would feel much less awkward in those situations, because we intuitively get that the "magic" still could be at work on the guy while he's traveling.
A lot of the audience for King Kong 2005 said that some scenes looked wrong, but couldn't give details about how they did. It was later realized that when characters ran underneath dinosaurs, they were not properly dimmed in the dinosaurs' shadows.
