I would love to see a monthly podcast of your projects. ❤ I’ve been spinning for 4 years but I still feel like a new spinner because I don’t spin regularly. I’m soaking in all of your info. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Happy to watch both monthly round-ups and unboxings of anything fiber-related. Thanks for continuing to answer questions!

The long draw insanity is coming from Andrea Mowry’s podcast. Thanks for sharing your sources and another great episode. I would enjoy seeing a roundup video.

Sara, Just had time watch this Q&A. I did enjoy it and yes would really enjoy seeing your finished yarn and what you make with it. Thank you for the time you give to make the videos

I would love to see a monthly video of your spinning/knitting projects! And oh my did I love your answer about supported vs unsupported long draw… I agree 100% with every aspect of your answer 😂 Thanks Sara for another very informative video!

Thank you for answering my question! I think it might be a combination of both changing the pace at which I draft/flick, and my rolags being slightly uneven. I'll work on both aspects more :)

Troubleshooting is hard. I’d change 1 thing at a time to see if you can really pin down what you want to change/ need to change.

supported vs unsupported long draw is like the continental vs english style knitting. it's just personal preference and what works better for you

    1. I cannot believe I forgot to ask a question after your last episode. Oops!
    2. “Do you guys want a separate video of…” let me stop you there Sara, yes! we want all the videos ❤
    3. I think because of the 100 days of longdraw going on now there is a lot of talk on social media like supported longdraw somehow isn’t longdraw or it is somehow less than. This really irritates me because IT IS longdraw! A popular influencer said she spun supported longdraw but wanted to get better at actual longdraw and my eye has been twitching over this ever since and now a lot of people have taken this mindset to heart. I spin supported longdraw (but I just say “longdraw”) because that’s how I enjoy spinning. I can easily spin unsupported but I choose not to just as I can spin continuous on my supports but I don’t because I don’t enjoy it as much.
    4. Q) when you buy fiber do you buy specifically for a wheel or a spindle? Or do you buy what calls to you and decide when you are ready for a new spin?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! The question I have is about twist in a long draw singles. I just learned long draw on me electric wheel today. I previously learned long draw on my support spindles from your previous video so translating that into the wheel made it easier than previous attempts. My problem is that I'm checking the twist in my singles using a tug test and they are sound, but if for some reason I need to pull a little yarn back off the bobbin the singles are breaking. Why is this the case? Do I need ever more singles twist?

Add just a tiny bit more twist to your wheel spun singles. Your tug test is good but the bobbin is pulling harder than your tug test is. By adding another rotation or two of the flyer should fix that issue. Let me know if that fixes the issue.

Regarding supported vs unsupported longdraw... I don't think there's a "better" version, but I do think there's a difference. I'm pretty sure that some years ago someone got a microscope out and examined the yarns from different longdraw/woolen styles and determined that unsupported woolen drafting created a loftier, airier yarn, whereas supported created more attenuation in a way that squooshed the fibers together a little more. (Personally I just don't care either way.) But I'm not really on instagram or in many communities where I've seen people fussing about this, so I suspect that I'm missing out on some drama somewhere. It's not "better".... where do people even get these ideas... Much like how annoying it is when people say "there's two ways to spin -- worsted and wrong," or when people say a woolen yarn should only ever have very low twist in the singles, I think that the only thing that matters is if the yarn comes out in a way that you like, regardless of other people's opinions.

But also, if you need a literal microscope to be able to see the difference...

    • @TheSpinningSara
      @TheSpinningSara  5 місяців тому

Yes!! I agree. As long as you like the yarn you’re creating, why does it matter how you got there?!
I’m sure there would be small squish marks in the supported longdraw if you looked microscopically at each single, however, I’m sure you’ve heard it said “Plying hides a multitude of sins.” I think you’d be hard pressed to find those squish marks on a plied yarn.
Regardless I wanted people to understand there is no wrong way to make yarn. I personally feel like there is room for everyone at the ‘drafting table’ and while we may do it differently, the fundamentals are the same. Longdraw is longdraw whether it is supported or not.
