    Even though "collapse to connected storyline" cleans up your timeline I will almost never use it. I often leave a bit of extra BROLL on each side if it's usable and sometimes it comes in handy when I make changes later on. But that's just my workflow it may change

    • @matthewTobrien

      I will use it pretty infrequently as well. I always keep my b-roll tidy as I edit. Many don't.

    I am SOOO happy with the scrolling timeline! nothing frustrated me more with FCP than the disappearing audio wave forms. I’m happy now but amazed that it took so long for Apple to make this change and roll out this feature.

    Thanks very much for going into the CtoCS. I'm a novice and use titles, and have a stack similar to what you showed in your example. I'm going to test later today and see what I can make work. I also want to start mapping my own keyboard shortcuts which i've not done, so I'm subbed and excited to do some research on your channel. Thanks again, Bill

    My version of backing up the FCP app is to make a folder with the version number as the label, drop a clean copy of FCP in that folder, and then use the Disk Utility to make a DMG of the folder...
    I've had problems in the past with just compressing the App as a zip file, and created this procedure as a way to avoid any problems with the zip compression... I also do that with Motion and Compressor... Also, as a note, crashes, and freezes can sometimes generate damage in the App that aren't solvable with a preference dump... Having a clean copy in an easily mountable file has helped me several times in the past... So I recommend this to everyone for both backup and restore...

    Turns out there is a default keyboard shortcut for "Collapse to Connected Storyline" - but you didn't see it because you already had a customised keyboard shortcut set. The shortcut is Command-Shift-Down Arrow.

    Hello Matthew !
    I have a simple question. Is it possible to receive a notification from App Store that Final Cut Pro has an update ? If no, is there any apps that notify upcoming updates ? The idea is to get notified as soon as Apple releases an update on the App Store.
    Thanks :)))

      Sure! It’s mainly used for transferring projects in and out of FCP. Would love to make a video about it - in the meantime, you can read all about it here: support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/use-xml-to-transfer-projects-verdbd66ae/mac

    Just updated myself. Massive improvement in drawing waveforms, which has always been a nuisance to me coming from Premiere Pro. Finally nice to not really have an issue like that any longer.
    In regards to the scrolling timeline and the jitter you mentioned, I noticed it too. Strangely, working in a 59.94 or 60fps project seems to mostly smooth the scrolling timeline out (still jitters a bit on my M1 MacBook Air), almost as though the scrolling speed is dictated by the FPS of your project. Not a big deal but I'd love to see the scrolling be smooth no matter what FPS you're working with.

Or does FCPX not change anything in those folders or plugins? Thanks!!!

    Personally, this update is the definitive push that's making me switching to DaVinci Resolve Studio for good after a decade using professionally FCP. Still learning Resolve (namely the node based system which is quite different) but I have to say that I'm absolutely loving it, from the color grading capabilities, to the incredible tracking features or advanced audio mixing, it's way more powerful in every way. That's the simple truth. It's a shame that Apple didn't catch up as I've been a FCP professional user for years and was hopeful that this would be perhaps a major update but unfortunately not, once again. For me it's a definitive good bye to FCP. Thanks for the video Matthew, great job as always.

      Why not just use both? Final Cut is faster for the well, cutting, and Resolve to master, color correct, and overall production. If you already paid for both, why only limit yourself to one?

  • @avdcam
    @avdcam 11 місяців тому +1

    Collapse to connected storyline, scrolling timeline, and improved tracking are great features, a lil' bit disappointed by the lack of auto transcription and auto ducking but Apple never mentioned them so I hadn't great expectations.
    I will not update soon (stuck at 10.6.5) because I have a project in progress at the moment, so I will probably do it during the Christmas holidays

    We need these feature otherwise I don’t see this update worth it :
    1- keyframe easing and graph editor
    2- dynamic link with apple motion
    3- assign more favorite shortcuts like the transform and crop
    4- mask to be an independent tool which can be accessed through a specific short cut not under effects
    5- Built in Motion Blur 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I have to agree with a lot of these comments. This is so underwhelming that it’s overwhelmingly sad it really just put Apple so far behind the curve that it’s ridiculous. They’re already dragging behind apps that are really starting to show promise and I hate to say it CapCut being one of them which I don’t use but I think final cut is probably gonna be ending for a lot of people after this lackluster update.- maybe we can get some more pregnant dad emoji’s that seems to be their core focus…..

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  11 місяців тому +1

      What's really frustrating about FCP is that it's light years beyond Resolve, Premiere Pro & Avid when it comes to the Magnetic Timeline, the organization/logging tools in the Browser, and its Multicam workflow. Yet all these other features that we've been dying to have added to FCP keep getting left out while the other NLEs add new ones every other week it seems.
      The other NLEs feel like a fully loaded Tesla being pulled by a horses (because track-based editing is antiquated, in my opinion). Final Cut Pro feels like a base model Tesla but for some strange reason it has no power steering, the back up camera is in standard definition, there's no remote start, and you've got to manually crank down the windows.
      And Final Cut Pro seems poised to be the NLE of the future but for whatever reason the team at Apple keeps underwhelming us with its updates.
