  • I hope this is helpful! There's no substitute for practice - there's just no way around the fact that you're going to have to try thousands of times before you build up the muscle strength and coordination. Don't give up! Build confidence and strength over time: start with a carpet board with no wheels, then add wheels, then the pavement with pads and helmet, then rolling. I'm not saying this is the only way - but this is ONE way to approach learning the ollie that is easy to build gradually using one exercise.
    This exercise is meant to build up to an ollie and it's meant to be supplementary to all the other great ollie tutorials already out there, not a replacement of.

    I see ppl say on a lot of videos, "this is the best tutorial..." But in all honesty,this is the absolute best tutorial for an Ollie I've ever watched. Just the small steps to work up to getting comfortable with your back wheels leaving the ground will help people a lot. From there, it's easy. I wish I had this video a long time ago.

    What really helped me a lot learning how to do ollies was being already confident on the board from riding, carving, and general board feel.

      Same one day I woke up and was able to manual for 3 times as long, cave man drop, and power slide and revert. All because I skated on the sidewalk making me comfortable, then the Ollie just came right after

    I think the bit about your forward knee is incredibly important and it's not something i've seen in many ollie tutorials (maybe any i've watched and that's a lot). I listened to the video and immediately thought "oh man - i bet that's why i struggle with the height of my ollies". sure enough - started practicing the ollie with the knee bit in mind and im already getting a LOT more height out of it. Thanks man! this helped a lot!

    Best description of an Ollie on UA-cam, hands down!
    Terrific way to approach it and you’re right, I’ve been “muscling through” my Ollie’s and they are exhausting. Your explanation makes so much sense and when I approach riding on my board the way you break it down, I find I become “lighter” on the board as opposed to being locked and feeling heavy when I first started skateboarding again.
    Great video, definitely saving it for my practice sessions.

    I just want to add that these principles also apply to other tricks. You can’t shuv if your weights still on the board. You also need tension between your feet (using your knees) to manual AND it helps to lift your weight up briefly to get into a manual or a slappy grind. This exercise helps build up strength in the muscles that you need (ankles primarily) as well as board control and comfort being weightless and detached from your board.

    Wow, I thought I had studied the ollie thoroughly enough in my 1,5 years of skating, and I basically know every single step of the Ollie, but had I practised it exactly like you are suggesting, I would have succeeded much much sooner! I will start again from scratch following your exact method 😊 yes, open the knee - I never saw it that way! Amazing!!! Although the hight has improved a lot, the Ollies are still way too exhausting for me, so I will try to relearn them your way.

    Yup, really solid description, I think this is one of the only videos that I've seen that mentions the knee movement to life the front foot, which honestly is the biggest blocker I've found in getting consistent Ollies. Nice breakdown!

    This definitely makes more sense. I’ve gotten to the conclusion that I need to actually prejump the pop, but the practice steps shown here is logical and helps a lot. I’ll head out if the weather allows and try it out.

    That is pretty on point. Everytime I have seen an ollie tutorial that keep saying to stomp your foot on the tail really hard. And with a trick as time precise as an ollie it takes a lot longer for your brain to wrap around the fact that you jump first then immediately flick your toes to generate pop.

    Ya spot on. I would do that I pop the tail and you can see that with no weight on it the back foot can easily pop it pretty high. Took me awhile to get them leveled out. I do use my back foot on a Ollie more to help level ,kind of use inside of my foot drag the board toward the front foot. If that makes sense.

    What a great and detailed explanation. As a beginner skater myself I can say that simply concentrating on jumping and leaving the board was the key.

    I came to one of those ideas on my own, which was that I should probably just practice hopping up and back down onto my board in a smooth controlled fashion first. Realizing I couldn’t really do that without a bunch of jerky motions I just worked on that for awhile.
    Your other tips are gold!! I’ll try em out

    This might just be another way of thinking of detail 2 here (putting the front knee forward), but I find it very helpful to think of pushing the tail “back” a bit, to kind of pull the board into my front foot. Yet another way of saying this is to jump with forward momentum. This has really helped me start to ollie up curbs, and has been really important to think about for working on kickflips.

      Yep there should be slight tension between your feet going outwards in each direction, so a little bit back towards the tail w your back foot and a little bit out towards the nose with your front foot.

    Wow, that's the most helpful ollie tutorial I've seen! You addressed pretty much every difficulty involved in a beginner being able to wrap their head around an ollie. I've tried all the steps before: pop, jump, slide and they are very exhausting and difficult and unnatural feeling, whereas everything you're saying makes much more sense. I can't wait to try it!!     this is an EXCELLENT video. Hands down the best ollie tutorial for beginners.
    I want to also mention that the concept of opening the front knee to aid the turning of the ankle may be helpful, but be careful because it also may cause the board to turn frontside, which makes it extremely difficult to land and ollie while moving. Just make sure to not overdo the opening of the knee, and keep all motions going up and straight for ollies.
    Finally i have two tips that will help with ollies (especially when rolling): Once you have the basic motion of the ollie down, focus on lifting your knees and getting your feet level
    in the air. Make sure to also bend your knees when landing to absorb impact.
    the second tip is to square your shoulders(make sure they are straight) ; i sometimes cross my arms infront of me (not leaning forward though) to help keep them straight and “closed” when I ollie. Opening you shoulder to much when ollieing can cause the frontside rotation i mentioned earlier
    whew hopefully that wasnt too much but again love this tutorial so much 🙏

    I've seen soooooooooooo many videos on how to ollie and the one Sarah Park-Matott does is great in breaking down those steps kind of like you do, but the knee thing 🤯 I knew I was missing something, I have some of those earlier steps down, but I still wasn't doing well with the front leg slide thingy and this totally just opened it up for me. Awesome video!

    Wow! This was a game changer for me. I got the ‘jump before pop’ thing down from some other videos, which is absolutely key… however the fact that you can baby step up from little jump/pops to find your timing and balance was new to me.
    Before I was trying to bend down to 90 degrees, jump and tuck my knees as high as possible while slamming the pop down as hard as possible. For a beginner, this is a recipe for the skateboard to go shooting out and send you for a slam every time.
    Baby stepping it up had me getting the back wheels off AND landing on my board in a few minutes. All over concrete without a railing and without any big slams.

    So damn right! I figured ollie out before seeing this tutorial and did everything wrong and got to a point saying "lets break the ollie down" after two months and ended up to his theory. Everything he says is absolutely correct.

      @@wildefirecontent191 Tested it out properly today after about a month of practicing regularly. Major breakthrough, I actually understand how to physically do the pop now!
      One thing I'd add though is how you fold your hips behind you to lift your knees during the jump, turns out I didn't give the board enough space under my feet because the lack of that backwards hinge ^^
      But yeah man awesome stuff, now it feels so much more plausible and I only need more practice! :D

What I meant is that I experienced improvement during the airtime part of the jump when I fold my hips backwards, I find it easier to suck my knees up that way. I do stay a lot more upright during the jumping up part tho ^^

    people always seem to forgett in trick tips its kinda hard to get in memory every detail for any trick because they do it for a very long time at some point
    and not everybody got a good understanding why any movement with your feet has to be done for example an ollie is kinda self explain if you do it for a longer time u pop so board comes up you jump so u come up your front foot slide towards the nose for making the board straight and not as a rocket but that feels way easier to understand if you skate for a long time and as you do far more complicated movements
    thats why i actuallly like trick tips from people more who recently learn a trick cause they got a way better understanding what makes them progress further in a trick like you explain in this ollie for example
    if you skate longer anything you learn you see at one point as its kinda easy you just have to do this and that but understanding that your body just learns by itself how much strenght what kinda timing you need and stuff you forgett about as more safe you get on a trick to a point that you cant think about too much about anything so u explain just what you see (foot placement, weight distribution, rotation and movement) thats why i kinda think trick tips in generell should be just see as a kinda advice rather then a guide cause depending on trick there are most of the time different ways to do them and you should learn how its easiest for you

    This is THE video I was looking for. I was trying the first tip u mentioned without knowing it was a good thing and I did a very huge improvement. A few days later I came back to try ollie but I didn't practice that and I totally lost it. I wasn't able to stay on the board. So I'm totally going to practice this every time I go skate.     I appreciate the effort of these types of videos, I've watched a few recently because my gf is starting to learn skating and I've been looking for a way to help her, but the truth is... there is no video that will help you learn how to ollie, other than the usual pop jump and slide your foot. There is no video that you will watch and go outside and land your first ollie with. The secret about learning ollies is that you can't learn it quickly. The secret is that there is no secret. Just repeat, repeat, repeat. You need to go through that whole thousand of failed ollies in order to discover the sensitivity needed to land an ollie. The balance, the position of your feet, the sensation in your toes, the amount of force applied, the amount of tension in your muscles, the way to distribute your weight. Your brain cannot learn any of that watching a video, you need to repeat the motion over a thousand times in order for your brain to start calibrating all those parameters. Wanna learn how to ollie ? Put down your phone, grab your board, practice. That's the ticket.

      I hear what you’re saying and to a degree you are right - intellectualizing can only get you so far, you have to actually practice and understand it in your body before you can really do it. But I also think both a mental understanding of the proper mechanics AND physical practice is necessary. Without understanding what it is you’re trying to achieve the best case scenario is you’ll waste a lot of time and worst case scenario is you’ll build a lot of bad habits that you’ll later have to undo, or injure yourself more than normal trying to do it wrong. I know for a fact that this video has helped things click for a ton of people - just read through some of these comments and you’ll see what I mean. thank you for your perspective!

I understand what you mean but I still think that even with the best of advices and theoretical understanding of the matter, you'll still have to go through that fair amount of pain and frustration (the one you describe at the beginning of your video). That just how skateboarding is I think. When people tell me stuff like "that's cool I've always wanted to skate but I could never learn" the only answer I can think of is "well, you need to have a thing for pain" and I genuinely think that's the thing. Anyways, thanks for the effort trying to help people out and all that, that's respectable for sure. Have a good one man.

    This is amazing! Thank you so much because your video and tips helped me a lot :). Opening my front knee to a 90° and reaching it toward the nose seriously helped me to Ollie and even to jump over smal obstacles like sponges. So, thank you very very much :)!

      Not sure about the first question without seeing it. It honestly doesn’t sound like a problem, you’re gonna be using Ollie’s while rolling 99% of the time anyway.
      As for the shoulder/feet thing- it’s best to keep your shoulders parallel to the board and your feet perpendicular

    Excellent description of the Gordian Knot of an Ollie.
    The best description I had heard before was to Kung Fu kick the board. Lead with you knee is more accurate. Kudos.

    Congratulations mate!!..you’ve just delivered THE BEST DAMN OLLIE TUTORIAL IN THE UNIVERSE…everyone else’s is also very good (thanks to everyone out there don’t get me wrong )but not as enlightening as yours…another GREAT piece of advice that had helped me learn the Ollie was that u have to think of it as JUMPING OFF YOUR BACK FOOT(Justin Lauria or nsi tutorial I don’t remember exactly who)

    I saw Andy Anderson talk about how hacky sack had similar motions to an ollie and that got me extending my front knee. I thought that was a good way of thinking about it as if you were bending your knee out to do an inner kick

    Great video ! You mean mentioned the most important part which is not having your foot on the tail when u pop
    My ollie’s currently look like 5:32 and is not reaching the nose just a little so am i not popping hard enough or do I need to jump higher ? Also I posted the video of my rocket ollie on Reddit and they told me I needed to lift my back foot higher how do I do that when it’s already I’m the air?

      First thing to work on to fix a rocketed Ollie is to make sure you’re fully opening your front knee and so the side of your front foot is perpendicular to the board.
      You only need to “jump” high enough that you become weightless - building height is about getting your knees up high after the jump. So make sure after the initial hop off your toes that your front knee is coming up high, and then make sure your back knee is shooting up immediately after the pop.
      You bring your feet up by bending your knees.

      @@wildefirecontent191 i must to practice hippie jumps a ton because i need to crouching down correctly and no so much deep and shift my body up. And i think when trying the moving ollie it’s the same technique but jumping forward with legs, not lean the body forward. What do you think?

      First part is correct. For a moving Ollie you jump straight up just the same way as a stationary Ollie and your board will naturally shift backwards and your foot will pull it forwards and under you again if your sliding correctly

      This is definitely the easiest way to understand the ollie. I even dare to do it on a small jumping ramp. I'm also going to try it going down curbs. No matter how many tutorials I have seen, I have never been able to understand how to do the ollie. My board would twist, it would pop too soon, I would fall backwards... a disaster. And the amount of noise I've made. I would go to the skatepark just to ollie, and I wouldn't do anything else. I send you a hug from the island of Mallorca.
