Lots of golden nuggets in the video. I have started my own web digitial marketing agency, looking for clients and doing a referral payout of 15% for each order I get.
You'll need to approach this differently. Figma and Framer are specialist tools, and you'll be engaging with tech clients mostly. The best way would be to position yourself as a freelancer at first and look for companies who are seeking for UIUX designers. Because a Figma design serves no purpose to a small local business if no websites are produced from them.
Hi! Nice to see someone from the UK, I smiled when you mentioned Birmingham. Do you have a course? And do you have any tips on how to be a better web designer using Squarespace? Thank you for the video. ☀
Hey Sam, glad to hear from another UKer. No I don’t have a course yet. I did put the current UX course for king’s college together but that’s more focused on getting into UX industry rather than web design business. onlinecareeraccelerators.kcl.ac.uk/kings-ux-design-online-career-accelerator Tbh it’s kind of why I set up a UA-cam channel as a lot of students I’ve taught ask me the same question, and UA-cam is probably the best place for me to start.

Love how you explained and made things sound very simple, just a question: How do we price the hosting? Is there a general rule of dumb? Would the price of hosting include any extra work that the client request on a whim or is that more of a 1 time charge as edits arise?
To be honest, you can charge whatever you feel comfortable. If it’s a simple website, I charge 2-3x the price of hosting. You gotta factor in that maybe once or twice a year issues may happen. I don’t include edit, because I find it makes clients want to do monthly changes for no reason as they want to make use of their 1 edit quota. You can up the price if you want to provide added service like printing out an analytics report every month. If it’s a complex website, you could hand it over the hosting and charge them if things go wrong, this way it’s worth your time fixing the problem. I know someone who charges 10x the hosting but for me that’s ripping someone off too much coz realistically you’re not going to be interacting with the site that much.
I want to start a web design agency using shopify as i have gained a lot of experience in that area, however how to i go about offering people, when i need passwords, ID, email address and not to mention the websites monthly payments. Someone help.
You should be sending them invoices with your bank details on it. There’s no need for you to ask them. If you’re looking to build websites for people then you just build it on whatever platform you’re comfortable with and transfer ownership to them.
I am using webflow, but also now working on learn framer as well. thank you for your videos, couldn't agree more that wordpress is painful to use, also I code as well and it was super painful 😅
Honestly a lot of people over think. People come to me and want a fully custom website because they think their personal brand is completely unique. But they honestly do not need it. I’ve had people in similar situations, and unfortunately I had to turn them down as clients
@@uxblueprint completely agree with your point. In many cases of mine, clients aim for highly customized websites, but they haven’t even developed a unique brand identity. Often, the designs they request don’t align with their vision. In my experience, what they actually need is a website that focuses on improving user retention, get attraction on SEO, speed to be optimized, etc. rather than something overly sophisticated.
Honest question: why does nobody point out in their videos that Wix has both “Wix Classic” AND Wix Studio? Seems like a huge oversight when UA-camrs don’t mention it, seeing how Wix Studio is pretty advanced (more capable than Framer in my experience) and not basic like the classic Wix editor. Ps- I’m not a Wix Studio fanboy (I prefer Framer, actually). I just think it’s odd that people lump Wix and Wix Studio in the same category or don’t mention Studio at all. That doesn’t seem right.
Great insights for anyone starting a web development agency! I actually have a full setup (domain, hosting, social media) ready to go but don’t have time to grow it myself due to other commitments. Any advice on what I should do with it?
I think you need to start reaching out to local businesses! That’s the best way to start off imo. You won’t likely make a lot of money starting off but it’s a good start for your portfolio!
Looking for a a talented freelance developer(preferably Wordpress Developer) to work on a website for my business. The domain is already purchased, just need someone to help build, host, and maintain my site. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll send you info!
@@uxblueprint depends on what you mean by Wordpress. Wordpress can be headless custom code, or builders like Elementor and Divi. And lets be honest, those solutions are basically at the bottom of the difficulty rankings. To use Webflow you need to know how code works. Otherwise anything you build is a dumpster fire. You're literally building the frontend code structure. That's not something you have to worry about with most wordpress builders at all. As someone that uses WP professionally and builds in Webflow as well, I can confidently say that Webflow isn't "easier" than wordpress. Especially to just learn. The learning curve for it is quite high.
@@filetmignon9978 depends on how you approach coding a website. I find elementor to be the hardest and most frustrating to use. But it's because I'm starting with a design that I want to implement pixel perfectly using elementor. I find it easier to achieve that in webflow/framer or even with custom code making a custom wp theme. Elemntor's just too clunky and gets in the way when you want to achieve that. If I approached the work differently and wanted to make the design itself in elementor I imagine that'd be pretty simple.
Thanks for the video! Really curious about your pricing for web hosting. Do you charge each client a “retainer” for the website every month, a recurring charge of $1200 every year, or a one time fee? Curious (if on retainer) you limit the number of revisions a client is allowed to ask for over certain periods. Does your fee cover a single design process or multiple? Thank you!
I don't like charging for number of revision, I tried this setup before but I find it makes the client feel like they need to do stuff for the sake of having 2 revisions and start asking you for changes for no reason. I want to have as little interaction as possible once I'm done and any further changes will require a fee. I'll only include "fixing" websites, which usually you can call squarespace and will get it done within minutes. The way I would structure a website would be give them 2 options (people like to have a choice): 1. One off for £10,000, but you manage it all once it's completed. All hosting and domain I'll pass on to you. If there are any issues, you can hit me up my rate is £500 p/day. 2. One off for £3,000, and then £150 p/month + £10 p/month if you want your own email domain. I'll manage the hosting and domain for you and fix any issues. I'll also give you a report of the SEO once a month (this is where you can send them the Squarespace analytics on site visits etc. This is often appreciated as they can see numbers) . If you require any changes such as copy/images it's £150 each update, please make sure you have all the correct information as I can only offer 1 revision if mistakes were made from your side. I also charge VAT as I'm over the threshold, so something else to consider once you start scaling. If the client is also VAT registered then it's £10,000 + VAT = £12,000. Some businesses might be a on reduced VAT which is 5%. Once you scale up to VAT threshold it's easy to manage. I rarely work with non-VAT registered business now a days as it just shaves 20% off the top.
Do you do anything for SEO optimization and monitoring besides what squarespace gives you out of the box? What does SEO optimization and maintenance look like on your side?
at 4:43 I explain a bit about why someone would choose you over the free sites. In terms of AI, it's very primative right now. It won't be able to generate specifically what you want, in general it won't be able to provide specific copy, pictures and context for your business. So ultimately you will still need to fill out all the content on the web page. You'd be better off getting a template from website builder.
Brilliant video, really helpful. I have been on and off designing sites for friends and family for a few years now and never really pushed to do it as a side Hussle / main job. I wanted to know what your opinion on naming your freelance business is? I see so many different business names and I'm not sure what to go with.
Arr nice. It’s pretty much how I got started, doing them for friends and then recommended to local businesses. It’s surprising how even though to you, it seems so simple, yet so many people can’t/don’t have the time to do it. And that’s where there’s a massive opportunity for people starting out. In terms of naming freelance business, I think go with some easy to remember but still relate to your niche. For example my design business is called AX Blueprint, it’s AX is a mix of my name and UX, and blueprint is just a cooler word than design. Don’t go with something complex or hard to remember. For example I know people who’s called their business G2YWS, no one is gonna remember that.
Hello Im 19 years old and Im looking to build a web agency. Came across your video and found it very useful thank you. Im looking to do this the hard way with a wordpress headless cms approach, using technolgoies such as React and JavaScript with tailwind css . I find using wordpress or Wix to build sites very limited and hate using the platform and in my opinion find managing code more easy and faster (sometimes). I want to be able to make the use of ready made templates and components first then onto custom designs. Whats your opinion on this and have you ever used this method of creating websites? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
You need to think about your target audience. For example if you’re selling to a local hairdresser, building a Wordpress / react web site doesn’t mean anything to them. You’re more looking at high end tech clients if that’s your aim. In that instance the strategy outlined in this video wouldn’t work. You’re better off reaching out to recruiters who can connect you with clients who are looking for your particular type of skill.
@@uxblueprint I will take in this advice and reconsider what services what I want to offer and my target audience. I definitely don't want to go for high end clients as Im fairly new to the business. I will probably look into customising static websites templates with Wordpress without the use of any unnecessary framework unless needed. Thanks.
Yes, if you're working with small businesses they don't need anything more. As you scale up, you'll need to change your offering. But depends where you want to take it.
Love the value 🙏 When you say hosting, are the clients paying you to pay for the annual/monthly squarespace fees? Do clients generally not want to just pay for it themselves as well?
Some do, but most don't want to deal with it and don't know how to work it. You'll be surprised how many people can't use Squarespace. Those small business owners are who you want to target! Now a days, I tell them to try Squarespace first, if they really struggle then I’ll take them on.
I might do a video at some point. Problem is it'll have to be a personal project rather than client project. There are videos online on squarespace from their youtube channel, but I'm planning to setup a store so will look at making a video out of it!
For me I found that looking up local businesses and seeing who doesn't have a website then giving them message or a call works quite well. If you managed to get through to them make sure you're prepared. I've never done in person, but it might work!
I don’t specifically target overseas client because sometimes it messes up my accounting with exchange rate and some clients won’t cover bank charges so I’ll have to absorb it, depending on the platform they choose. But if something comes up and I’m available for it then I wouldn’t say no. The one in Singapore I actually reached out to them about something unrelated, and they got back to me with a proposing to work with them. I don’t use Fiverr or Upwork as I find them too saturated. With regional business you should be able to find plenty who are willing to work. At least from my perspective.
I’ve never used Duda. But if it’s simple to use and can deliver as many features as Squarespace and wix, and you can use it easily. Then it’s definitely usable. The thing about Squarespace and wix if you can be the owner of the site and allow others to log in and manage it. Which gives you control over the website in case of missing client payment which I’ve definitely been stung before previously.
@uxblueprint yeah thanks man. Yeah duda gives you the ability to mange multiple websites under one account.. plus you can whitelabel the platform and add team members with user login and restrictions. Ok mate thanks
It was an example as I used to work with a lot of night clubs and takeaway who want flyers. But now a days they are more IG posts designs rather than flyers.
You need to test the market with what you're confortable with. It needs to be worth your while but at the same time not price yourself out. Find that equalibrium point and go from there :D
It heavily depends on your skill level and where you're based. I haven't used Fiverr/PeoplePerHour for over 10 years because as someone based in the UK. I can't compete with what others from India is charging. And also starting out now, it's very hard to get ranked unless you offer a cheap solution. However what you can compete with is being local and offer simplicity. What you'll find is, many potential clients, if they don't have the capacity to learn webflow, then they're likely not going to want to manage the website on the long term neither. So although I can't give you any recommendation on pricing, I'd recommend just reaching out to local businesses, you'll likely have better success.
Great man, i am planning to start a productised wordpress website agency where website will be free them but for maintenance they have to pay it's 200$ - 300$ for a monthly basis .... And I will try to make it 6 month compulsory for them ... Bro I want to start it because I want to have recurring payment from wordpress website services ... Can u pls guide it would work or not? I am confused a bit ... It would be helpful for me ...
100%, especially if you’re selling to clients who are not designers. A bakery store or a take away is not going to know how you use square space to deliver their website. This is one side of my agency that anyone can pick up very easily!
At the end of the day, AI still needs prompting, and it's far from perfect at the moment. The biggest problem right now is consistency and allowing adjustments, which has a different learning curve. You'll still need to put in the same, if not more effort for AI web design platform.
No I was just getting paid directly. I didn't set up a ltd until 2018. You can actually just look up people's name in UK gov website to see if UA-camrs are telling you the truth about running their own business or if it was a failure and it's been dissolved.
Yes I’ve tried running Adsense. I don’t think I ever got any business from it, at first most if not all clients were me reaching out. Then eventually it’s just through recommendation and meeting people in person.
Absolutely. Everyone has to start somewhere. With products like Squarespace and Wix, it's made even easier to help you build professional looking websites. You just need to start reaching out to clients and offer your solution to them.

How do you get clients from Singapore do you approach through LinkedIn or you put yourself out on Fiverr and Upwork?
I don’t specifically target overseas client because sometimes it messes up my accounting with exchange rate and some clients won’t cover bank charges so I’ll have to absorb it, depending on the platform they choose. But if something comes up and I’m available for it then I wouldn’t say no.
The one in Singapore I actually reached out to them about something unrelated, and they got back to me with a proposing to work with them.
I don’t use Fiverr or Upwork as I find them too saturated. With regional business you should be able to find plenty who are willing to work. At least from my perspective.
@@uxblueprint thank you for being honest with the reply :)
Can I have you opinion on Duda please. Its something I'm currently looking at using.
BTW I'm near you. I live near birmingham. Town called redditch

Thanks my friend. Let us know what other content you'd want to see!
Why would they want flyers and posters if they want a website? I don't understand the package
It was an example as I used to work with a lot of night clubs and takeaway who want flyers. But now a days they are more IG posts designs rather than flyers.
The hardest thing I'm finding is how to price my different builds
You need to test the market with what you're confortable with. It needs to be worth your while but at the same time not price yourself out. Find that equalibrium point and go from there :D
How much would you charge for a retainer
I charge 3-4 times domain and hosting. You're mostly going to be working with small businesses so you want it to be reasonable whilst making money.
I just recently strated learning Webflow, how much do you recommend I price my packages on Fiverr?
Hey hey! Is it necessary to be an UIUX designer to start a design agency? Like having some knowledge of design is sufficient?
Not at all. I started making websites for small businesses before I became a “UIUX Designer”. I think it does help, but it’s not necessary.
Can I do it from scratch, knowing that I am a user interface designer and a beginner in the field?
100%, especially if you’re selling to clients who are not designers. A bakery store or a take away is not going to know how you use square space to deliver their website. This is one side of my agency that anyone can pick up very easily!
Hello I really need to connect with you hopefully getting your reply soon@@uxblueprint
what do you think about gohighlevel as a website builder?
I've never used it, but if you can build what customers want then go ahead!!
what do you think about people using ai to design and create their websites.
At the end of the day, AI still needs prompting, and it's far from perfect at the moment. The biggest problem right now is consistency and allowing adjustments, which has a different learning curve. You'll still need to put in the same, if not more effort for AI web design platform.
I have been messaging to the clients for months and not a single reply 😢
have they paid?
Are you in London bro? Can we connect? Would love to talk
Yes I am, feel free to reach out through my website :)
Great stuff but when you first started did you form an LLC?
No I was just getting paid directly. I didn't set up a ltd until 2018. You can actually just look up people's name in UK gov website to see if UA-camrs are telling you the truth about running their own business or if it was a failure and it's been dissolved.
I have a good eye in design but I don't have any clients. Any collaboration?
Have you got a portfolio online? How many clients have you reached out to?
Have you run ads to get clients ? What was the result ?
Yes I’ve tried running Adsense. I don’t think I ever got any business from it, at first most if not all clients were me reaching out. Then eventually it’s just through recommendation and meeting people in person.
why worldpress is harder than webflow
WordPress has too many variables and you can get plugins that have little to no support.
@@uxblueprint thanks
A complete new beginner can Start web Agency? What do u think?
Absolutely. Everyone has to start somewhere. With products like Squarespace and Wix, it's made even easier to help you build professional looking websites. You just need to start reaching out to clients and offer your solution to them.
@@uxblueprint bro, plz make a proper video how a beginner start this Business plz🙏
You mean from start to finish creating a square space agency?
@@uxblueprint bro, I want to say I am totally new in this sector. I am ai Artist, blogger. NOW for beginners how we start a website agency? Just need ur valuable guidelines Step by step.
@@uxblueprintplz make a video 🙏
I registered my brand in USA, I am proficient at several web dev technologies, HTML, css, js, react, express, f#, c#. But struggling to make connections and get clientes 😢
If you're providing technical solutions like js, c# then you are targeting a different group of customers. You'll be better off looking at freelance websites rather than reaching out to small businesses.
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried to find customers through freelancing websites, but there are so many people from around the world doing the work for even 5 dollars an hour, can’t beat that jeje
bro literaly copying anna hickman
I've been doing this since 2012, not watched her content but we are both definitely using VidIQ to come up with video ideas, and title suggestions. You'll probably see hundreds of people doing the same content with the same video title. Just depends on whose information you find more useful i guess :)
Do your own too... that's so wrong of you. Coming to someone's page to say they're copying someone, copy someone and start your own too 🙄
@@Thee_callista every content has been made and repeated before 😂
She invented web design?
