We had some raised beds but found we needed to water them too often so turned them into wicking beds. They seem to be working better but summer will be the big test. We live in the South Aust Mallee so it gets pretty hot.
No worries. Two things I forgot to mention. Racing stables for horses is a good place to get old bedding and it has manure in it. And councils sometimes have green waste you can get. John
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 Last time I did a dump run they had a big truck mounted industrial mulcher munching up all the green waste accumulated there. I meant to ask them what it cost to fill a trailer with a back load but got side-tracked and forgot. The heap never seems to grow to overflowing what with all the Prickle Farms springing up around here.
Great video with detailed and understandable info! Could you maybe show us what you plant and how they go over the season? We are on stage six water restrictions and have been for almost two years now, I made my IBC's into wicking beds and they work very well on limited water.
been keeping my eye out for an ibc cheap for a while, but I think everyone else has the same idea so there isn't too many floating about no one have claimed yet lol
How long do they last? Wonder if spraying them with something like 303 inside and out would make them last longer. I bought a use Bass Boat in the 70's. When I sold it 15 years later. The seats were still in good condition. . Treated the vinyl seats with original Armor All. But who knows. The bean Counter may have got them to change the formula by now.
I have not had any problems with them breaking from UV no doubt they get weaker as time goes on. I think if you were worried about it you could spray a bit of paint on the outside. One thing I wonder is if freezing conditions like you get in the US would make a difference. John
I found the containers but have no idea what they once held. That being the case I removed the plastic liner and just kept the frames. Any thoughts on what to line the sides with?
What about some old roof steel roof sheeting we call it corrugated iron. If you have the corrugations up and down on the sides it should bend around inside the frame ok. John
As much as I love that song, sometimes it's louder than you are! And not accustomed to your accent, it's hard to understand your words. But love the content. The only thing I would do different is to seal up the bottom and drill a hole about 6 inches up from the container bottom so excess water can flow out. That would allow all the wood to soak up the water in effect turning that into a wicking bed.
@@farminglifeaustralia6716 one more thing. Do you have a lapel microphone? That would be helpful! You cover some real interesting topics and I would love to hear them. I usually turn on captions and watch a second time so I don't miss a thing.

I am sure they do, where we dispense the Molasses a bit gets on the ground and the rain melts and spreads it and the grass there is always green as green. John

The best 1000litre containers to use are old CCA containers. Keeps the white ants and other vermin out of the patch - AND they don't half make your lettuce green! 😜😁🙄
Ok jokes on me Copper Chromium Arsenate. I can see it wood make the lettuce green probably glow in the dark as well. Which would be handy if you wanted to pick them at night. 👍😂, John
We can get them for $25 and I have old ones that I have used for two seasons that are not safe for molasses anymore. I would not use them if I had to pay $140 each for them. John

ok I found that two things help with the water. Not having a complete open bottom and mulch on top it keeps the weeds down as well. John
Great video. I have a mollases one that is almost finished. I will give it a go.
Ok that sounds good. John
Great idea thank you
You are so welcome! John
Spot on mate, I’m going to do just that in the middle of sydney town. Thanks
