Fighting fires is not an all or nothing or all 1 attack task... just like in anything, specialized tools are critical to turning corners and supplementing the large sledge hammers that are the larger tankers that cannot do precision drops or rapid deployments. BTW - how many fires have you fought again?? Also the Hueys in most cases had less than a thousand gallons and were still effective.

These are carrying 1,000 gallons already that can make a drop and then drop off the crew on that spot. Helitack is crucial in early intial attack when the fire is 10 to a few hundred acres. These could save fires from reaching into the thousands or hundred thousands of acres.

Good news for California communities. In the past few years our firefighters have really gotten aggressive with initial attack and saved us from many small fires getting out of control. Those of us who live with these fires are extremely grateful for our firefighters.

I'm lost. L.A. County has been using the S70A for 20 years.. They now have a beefed up S70I but its still based on the same bird with some upgrades.. As a kid in the 80s my father and I would go watch the old 212s land at the temporary LZ on the road next to a hydrant when the San Gabriel mountains would burn. The old hueys have always been my favorite..

Vapor in fire is perfect, humidity kills fires. The more humidity the better the chances, when water is dropped in high quantities you get both large molecules and the vapor. Water wets but vapor kills oxygen
Could this be configured as a bolt-on kit for NG ships in states that don’t have the dedicated resources CalFire does? Or are the required retrofits simply too extensive? Seems like a nice upgrade over slinging buckets but obviously, states with smaller tax bases can’t afford dedicated helicopter fleets like this.
Not only firefighting but this is gonna change the game of Search and Rescue. This is on par with Coast Guard level equipment, I wonder what the rescue future will be like for these birds and the fire service on the west coast.

Adding night time capability and each helicopter having rescue capability, definite game changer.
Looks like it can bring in a hotspot crew and then start doing drops for them, really good for stopping things before they get out of control.

It's weird to think that LACo Fire has had Firehawks for at least 2 years while Cal Fire barely received them this year.

At 4:03 that is actually a Sikorsky S-70 which was what the Black hawk was developed from.
