California firefighters gain new weapon in fight against wildfires

- Eleven western states are under an increased threat of wildfires this summer. But this year, firefighters in California have added a new type of aircraft to their arsenal. Joy Benedict reports.
The fill rate, the 1000 gallons, and night usage....incredible.
@tyvek05 yeah I guess for the past 40+ years the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on helicopters were just for kicks
@tyvek05 1000 gallons is enough to keep roads cleared for evacuations and to hit hot spots before they flare into full blown blazes.
AirCal still has their multi-1000 gallon large tankers as well.
Fighting fires is not an all or nothing or all 1 attack task... just like in anything, specialized tools are critical to turning corners and supplementing the large sledge hammers that are the larger tankers that cannot do precision drops or rapid deployments.
BTW - how many fires have you fought again?? Also the Hueys in most cases had less than a thousand gallons and were still effective.
tyvek05 as he said what if a firefighter falls through a burning roof of a house? A helicopters can quickly drop water on that house and save his life
tyvek05 it actually can. These fire hawks are replacing the current hueys that carry firefighters that’s called helitack. On the hueys, pilot has to drop off crew in a safe place then hook up the bucket that only carrys 250-300 gallons. These are carrying 1,000 gallons already that can make a drop and then drop off the crew on that spot. Helitack is crucial in early intial attack when the fire is 10 to a few hundred acres. These could save fires from reaching into the thousands or hundred thousands of acres.
tyvek05 as a pilot for cal fire, you are absolutely wrong, 1000gal is more than you can understand, especially as we have 12 hawks and almost 80 other helis
At last something that does not make USA look stupid and money well invested.
IKR!
Our advanced fighters make us look stupid?
@@ducktape4502 there's more military vehicles than their is firefighters equipment which is stupid cuz you want people in your country to be safe and want to prevent as much damage that will cost lots more to build those buildings again
@@ducktape4502 shut up you don't live in the west you don't know what it like having fires every single year. At least people life will be safe and won't be taken as fast as before be glad don't be ungrateful.
I want to think that way cuz I'm positive but I can't help thinking that it's California tax money from the poor going to protect rich houses.
Adding night time capability and each helicopter having rescue capability, definite game changer.
Looks like it can bring in a hotspot crew and then start doing drops for them, really good for stopping things before they get out of control.
No way that was a natural fire even he seemed like he didn't believe it and look it's still going
@@jesserodriguez8136 Thinks you replied to the wrong comment. This was about the choppers, not the origin.
@@comment2009 Yeah but still either way they weren't a game changer.Somethings fishy with these fires haha
@@jesserodriguez8136 Replacing helicopters some 40 or more years old with higher water delivery and ability to operate at night is a game changer.
I heard a helicopter practicing and flying low just this evening. Really grateful for our firefighters.
Finally our taxes are being used in a professional way, why TF can't we see more of this?
cuz it doesn't fit mainstream medias agenda
They used Trumps travel money
@Daniel Chang ay yo get ur shield ready for the mass amount of hate comments ur gonna get
Daniel Chang what does this have to do with the topic of the video?
@Daniel Chang Yeah, let's execute people who disagree with us!!
Sounds like the reporter has never heard about a helicopter.
This is not a typical aircraft. Even those that have flown a blackhawk haven't experienced autopilot, waypoint navigation, auto hold altitude, retractable syphon...way way dope.
Master yeah it’s not like a bell it’s a monster helicopter
Well to be fair it's not that she doesnt know, she asks questions for people who dont know.
They should've bought a Antov water carriers. Would literally just extinguish the fire in a pass
Naa she sold it like it was a movie trailer I thought
"These arent cheap"
US Military: "Oh we have thousands of those!"
Sad they build more war machines and they do to save the environment
Then they do
And the fires are getting worse hmmm
Josh Fischer yea because a ton of countries hate America right now have you seen the comments

Finally. GOOD NEWS.
How in the world is wild fires good news 🤣🤣

They have fire extinguisher bomb pods. They can be dropped from drones as well but each pod is super expensive like 15k a piece or something like that..

Theres a BlackHawk, Seahawk, and now the Firehawk. That’s so awesome! Living in California, I can’t tell you how important these type of aircraft are. We have fires every single year and I don’t mind if they cost that much. It will be saving countless homes and lives out here.
We need all 12 of those right now especially in September 2020!
I'm more than happy to pay my share!
I’m actually going to say it......Great job California! Good job and keep it up!
Finally tax dollars spent wisely!!
Anybody else feel like the reporters trying to sell us one of those helicopters?
It’s almost like capitalism has gone from being an economic model to a universal philosophy
Not at all. The reporters are happy for what these helicopters can do to save lives
Well, considering we already bought them, why not? I like to feel good about where my taxes are going.
Not off to a good start
Nope.
Money well spent

This is an Amazing machine an Thanks to the skilled pilots for all you do
I've seen these out in CO when they were ferrying out to CA. These things look brand new.
Centennial Airport, Colorado
@@jimwattenburger4545 yep, they parked on the same ramp as I did.
Thank you! Finally! It is so sad every year knowing when it’s windy that there is going to be a fire its all bad
What they need is to refit the S-3 Viking into a day/night capable aerial fire fighting tanker. It can fly twice as fast as the s2 and could supposedly carry 2,000 gallons of retardant.
These Pilots are badasses, thought so since I was a kid watching with amazement as they fought fires through the 1980's-1990's.
I was starting to wonder how long it was going to take to finally see some good news in 2020. Only took 8 months, 16 days, 9 hours, 13 minutes, and 24 seconds.
At 4:03 that is actually a Sikorsky S-70 which was what the Black hawk was developed from.
Imagine using ospreys in the future for battling fires? That would be amazing considering how fast they are compared to choppers
Ospreys are kinda sketchy when it comes to their safety record though.
Too complex and they can barely any room in them
Finally good news! Yay!
Fantastic creativity in this future days
Great report. Finally something on a news channel I actually want to watch. Cal Fire employees deserve raises.
Can they used it on protesters?
No, but they can use it on racists like you tho. Why would they use it on protestors. I bet you didn’t mind the protests when it was white people WITH GUNS protesting about wearing face masks and social distancing. The privilege is clear
BLM and antifa are racist terrorist sects... affirmative action is a curse... one needs to earn thy merits... not take it by threat or force... destroying personal and public property...
No, but it should be used on your grammar.
I love this. Thanks 4 the support
Thank you
We neeed to pay attention to environment
Hats off to our brave fire fighters. Glad we’re investing in getting them better high tech equipment to keep them safe.
US Military Equipment literally saving lives!
@Great Value damn so you wouldn't say that by the American MILITARY going in and killing Osama bin laden that didn't save lives?? because I'm pretty sure that did.
It always was it was just saving American lives only by keeping the fight from American coastal shores
@@jefferyschneider6394
Doing so, by the threat of killing people or actually killing people.
Do know of the US Military saving lives. Especially proud when our Military is used for Disaster Relief around the World.
Just pointing out "Military Equipment" is usually for killing.
Nothing against US Service Personal.
Next is a tank turned into a super bulldozer.

Good news for California communities. In the past few years our firefighters have really gotten aggressive with initial attack and saved us from many small fires getting out of control. Those of us who live with these fires are extremely grateful for our firefighters.
This is great 👍🏾
Big respect to these pilots. If anything happens to the aircraft, they are at an altitude too low for parachutes to deploy.... Respect to all these folks and God Bless
i dont think jumping out of a failing helicopter to parachute is good.
Thank you SO MUCH for this piece of information! God Bless Cal Fire and the Firehawks! ♨️🚁❣Sept. 2020--AND, if we didn't have these, I nor my community would have a home to return to two weeks ago! Please add add'l budget lines for more SuperTankers 💲💛💲!
It's weird to think that LACo Fire has had Firehawks for at least 2 years while Cal Fire barely received them this year.
Sweet!! LA COUNTY has had these forever. San Diego city just got theirs last year.
We need more of this!
They needed these when buildings were burning during the protests
Yah I wanna see these dropping on those areas, most protest can’t do anything if we’re fast enough
@Dominate Gene im pretty sure theres something called storm drains and 3x1000 gallons isnt gonna flash flood a whole city
Well out of range for atlanta

There's a screen on the end to prevent fish from getting in the water tank.

It’s cool to see these guys and PG/E fly over and follow them on Flightradar24
Imagine a B52 that carries tanks of water, that would be the next step
The Air Force would never give up B-52s for fire fighting but wouldn’t that be awesome.
These reporters are actually cool
This would make controlling riots a little easier.
yes sirree Bob
Lol
as a person who has lived in the west coast, its extremely scary to see a fire that is just about approaching your home.
Wouldn't be necessary if they would start raking the forest…
& if they would stop dumping jet fuel
Dosent really work that way
At least in the hills that usually have fires
@Shadow Croix shutup already troll.
We need controlled burning, not raking. I imagine you would be raking for quite some time before accomplishing anything.
Still very much needed. 👍
Lmao 😂 we bought 12😂😂
That is so impressive,...
$24 million for a used retrofitted military vehicle seems a bit steep
For its lifetime and amount of money it can save, it's well worth it.
@@nyph933 yea but considering a used Blackhawk helicopter is only $6 million there is no way they added $18 million dollars in upgrading these things
@@Wisconsin.pikachu I believe it could be for overall maintenance for years? unsure
You're not counting what Newsom and his cronies are stuffing in their pockets...
@@smartyjones7459 ik if i was a tax payer i would ask for a itemized build list or receipt with the upgrades someone os getting a big paycheck from these things
La county has been flying these for years

Much Respect for those guys
Why we don't have more of them.
We spend billions for the military
Because the military has to go up against things far more dangerous than any wildfire.
I'm lost. L.A. County has been using the S70A for 20 years.. They now have a beefed up S70I but its still based on the same bird with some upgrades..
As a kid in the 80s my father and I would go watch the old 212s land at the temporary LZ on the road next to a hydrant when the San Gabriel mountains would burn. The old hueys have always been my favorite..
It almost looks like the water vaporizes in mid air and never actually touches the ground 😅
Well it actually works which is crazy
Trust me, it feels a whole lot different when its being dropped on you. These things will flatten cars and always send big tree branches down.
@REDBOYlegend 100% correct no joke
Vapor in fire is perfect, humidity kills fires. The more humidity the better the chances, when water is dropped in high quantities you get both large molecules and the vapor. Water wets but vapor kills oxygen
@@13eckerlosmuerte You must have a chemistry degree, huh
