Angles of Interest! Working with funny angles in scratch builds - Building Station Road Part 9

  • The bottom building on Station Road has a really interesting roof line which comprises many angles that are not simply 90 degrees. In this episode I show how I approached all of these interesting angles to get them right first time without the need for any awkward fettling.
    Every technique I used is easy and straightforward. You don't need a calculator or anything other than a ruler.

    I think it's great how readily you embrace curves and angles in your lovely builds. I know many scratch-builders would more readily just build boxes of various sizes, but you always go the extra yard and the results speak for themselves. Your buildings are more than a hobby, they are a vocation.

    Great video as always. Adding variety and different angles to roofs and walls makes the model more prototypical and far more interesting. It reflects that the built environment has developed over time and evolved to suit various constraints. Well done. Ian

    Glad for this one Michael and the timing is spot on! Designing a bay window for Victorian terrace houses this came in very handy. The hipped roof videos from before explain the principle on a four sided building, but not a part where shapes are angled inwards - like a bay window. This is where this video comes in. It helped me out massively and got my Inkscape work where it needed to be. Cheers Michael!
    At the minute I’m dismantling my small OO gauge layout as it takes so much of my loft room up, which my girls will need as they grow older. The room I’m going to be left with is an 8’6” x 6’6” room which it’s agreed nobody will want as a bedroom. An 8’x3’ N gauge layout will give nearly a scale half mile on a loop and being the equivalent of 16’x6’ in OO will give me lots of building to do! Also I’m quite keen on the idea of N being a lot less card, printing, acetate and being able to model buildings real size instead of making them smaller than they would be just to make them fit onto a OO layout.
    I do plan to keep the OO as a modular end-to-end job, run on shuttle units using the reclaimed wood and stored on shelves under the N gauge layout, I’m not letting any of that go to waste!
    Cheers Michael and keep em coming!
    Alex

      @@Chandwell Thanks Michael, it’s all going to take ages (years!) which I’m happy with as I like these things in the back of my mind to keep me occupied! Warley’s gone a bit wrong, am on nights up until Saturday night/Sunday morning which won’t really work. Hope you have a good time Michael, but it’s anything like GETS you’ll need a lot of patience - it was proper rammed. It could take a long time to get a decent view on many layouts and moving around wasn’t very quick. However it shows there’s loads of interest in the hobby which is great to see. Cheers Michael, thanks for the reply and best for now 👍🏼

    It looks like with Station Road Chandwell will soon be complete. What are your plans once the layout is done? Is there room in your home for expansion or to perhaps begin building another one?

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  11 місяців тому +2

      Station Road will complete the “Station End” of the layout but there is still a vast part of empty baseboard awaiting the “Industrial End”. This will be old mills that line the river and reflect in the waters surface. And maybe the side of a football stadium, or a couple of 15-storey 1960s flats. I estimate there is still at least four years left until the buildings are finished and then another year of detailing.

    You use PVA. Aren't you afraid the paper is going to curve? That happened to my paper buildings, mainly the roof. I use UHU contact glue now.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  11 місяців тому +3

      I’ve used nothing but PVA for about ten years and have never had any issues. Not sure why I’ve avoided all of the problems that others get - odd leaking of printed ink, bubbling of paper, warping of parts. Etc. maybe it’s because I use a strong “craft” version of PVA or maybe a good quality photo paper for printed surfaces. I’ve tried UHU and do use it sometimes but I find it the devil’s glue. It is stringy and incredibly hard to work with. It actually makes me angry! PVA keeps me nice and calm! 😂

    • @macnavi
      @macnavi 11 місяців тому

      @@Chandwell I agree, I prefer PVA as well, but it comes at a cost. I'll have to try other brands, I guess. Maybe carpet glue.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  11 місяців тому +1

      @doctormo 11 місяців тому

    Where do you source architects drawings from when you use them?

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  11 місяців тому

      Every local authority in the UK has a Planning Portal. Any property that has required Planning Permission over the last 20 or so years will have a record on there. Many (not all) have drawings attached. You can download them. Do a search for "Bradford Council Planning Portal" for example.
