I just heard this song for the first time this morning while driving my daughter to school. One of those rare songs that's so amazing you almost drive off the road. The lyrics are wonderfully eloquent and the music brings to my mind a lot of what was great in early 70's rock.
@@trilossiaman837 My favourites right now are Cigarettes after sex, Alvvays, Mitski and Sufjan Stevens. The last two make me super excited about the future of music.
Great song...gotta love Father John's humor. We laugh at this dying man who checks his newsfeed before he dies, but here we all are as listeners and fans on UA-cam, being the exact dying man he describes, cynical and self-righteous, nobody else's opinion compares to our own wise, words of god. Personally, I'd rather be the Ladie's Man with the his casket tied down with a garter belt...but nah, I'm a damn dying man too by posting this comment. 😂😂
@Richard Delinsky fr man it really makes you think about life and shit. Pure Comedy, Ballad of the dying man, Total Entertainment Forever, and Things It Would've Been Helpful To Know Before The Revolution make you reflect and think about a lot of shit. Some of the best songs ever.
The first time I heard this song was about month after losing my best friend to cancer-the lyrics are so similar to something my friend would say. Naturally it hit me like a ton of bricks..and I cried like a baby. I've been a fan of the Father ever since
I think I'll like it no matter what, but I hope the wit from 'I Love You Honeybear' is still there. I hope he isn't to 'direct' with his lyrics this time around. Nevertheless, I'm exited.
*LYRICS* Naturally, the dying man wonders to himself: “Has commentary been more lucid than anybody else?” And had he successfully beaten back the rising tide of idiots, dilettantes, and fools on his watch while he was alive? Lord, just a little more time! oh In no time at all, this'll be the distant past ooh So, says the dying man: "Once I'm in the box, just think of all the overrated hacks running amok." And all of the pretentious, ignorant voices that will go unchecked, the homophobes, hipsters, and 1%, the false feminists he'd managed to detect. oh, Who will critique them once he's left? oh In no time at all, this'll be the distant past What he'd give for one more day to rate and analyze The world made in his image, as of yet to realize What a mess to leave behind Eventually, the dying man takes his final breath But first checks his news feed to see what he's 'bout to miss And it occurs to him a little late in the game We leave as clueless as we came From the rented heavens to the shadows in the cave We'll all be wrong someday oh ...
In today's contemporary music environment, Father John Misty sustains a reminiscent vocal honey in his tone. At once he is gentle and conflicted in his delivery. Surely you can compare him to the Falsettos of the sixties or seventies with great scrutiny, but that's not what i meant. Relative to modern artists such as Vampire Weekend, Cigarettes after Sex, Ed Sheeran, or Mac DeMarco (etc. there are many great great artists on the come up), I would argue Misty has the softest and most refined falsetto.
Very cool. All of the tracks remind me of George Harrison's album Living in the Material World. The harmonies, almost gospel feel in the piano, the spiritual nature of the lyrics. I really dig this. I see many people are call him to task about the political nature in the songs, but he is not wrong. In fact, most of the lyrics talk about people and society blindly following a leader or a belief. That can be dangerous whether your leader wears a "Make America Great" or a Pork-Pie hat. I find the lyrics challenging but not self-righteous.
Nathan Patrick Are people defined by what they think or what they do? Josh is getting the spread of the human experience and condensing it into his music, he's always been didactic.
Nathan Patrick, Have you ever listened to him before? He's been critiquing society since Fear Fun, and continued to on Honeybear. Examples? ("Now I'm Learning to Love the War" "Bored in the USA" "Holy Shit" "True Affection") This is not some aberration of the artist he's been before, so everyone complaining is either unfamiliar with his work or perturbed by the Trump imagery in his other video.
Pure Comedy is pure genius! I'm still listening to THAT song with different ears and eyes, and finding nuances of the human condition revealed in every intimation of lyric and tone.
this album is gonna be great. It's just highlighting that we distract ourselves with consumption, elections, entertainment, etc. because we all know deep down that we are gonna die one day

I hope someone takes my songwriting seriously like this one day. I love this guys sound, and he makes me love what I do more and more every day... You just want to talk about the world.
He does a great job of making me want to like him. But... There's nothing new under the sun...He is the greatest reminder of that truism. I don't want reminders of that in my music.
Is This Rain? I suggest listening to the full album start to finish now that its out.. use some headphones, turn off the lights, lay down and close your eyes. that's what I did and it was awesome.. I even fell asleep and had really crazy dreams.. lol after waking up I had to replay what I missed.
To me this song all boils down to a modern take on Plato's allegory of the cave, referenced near the end of this song. All we can see is shadows of reality from our perspective, and yet we still persist in trying to comment and subject our opinions into positive statements about the outside world. What's it all worth?
Not as hip an influence, but there's more than a little James Taylor circa Sweet Baby James in FJM's stuff. Which is fine with me -- Taylor was smacked out singing stuff like Fire and Rain on the Johnny Cash show and starred in the great film Two-Lane Blacktop with Dennis Wilson and Warren Oates. Cool.
Damn, this album is going to be stacked. Just like the first two. Looking very much forward to it, to understate it excessively, and many more years of creative success for Mr. Tillman. Been mainlining pure comedy on repeat for days. Gold.
I liked the last two singles a lot, they seemed liked they were released as a snap shot of the current state of politics. I really enjoy the change of pace this track brings and I'm so excited for the album!
Josh Tillman does it again kids! This guys got inspiration for years to come and then some. I saw him 2 years ago with my wife. It was mind blowing. Check out the video I took that night... He THROWS DOWN...it was an incredible show!
great song, great text, great feel.... I wish I could remind myself the message of that song each morning I wake up. And this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave too.
After listening to more of the material and hearing interviews, I think we (maybe just me) might be getting things a bit mixed up. When I first heard these songs, I automatically put my "political" filter on assuming he was talking about a Trump presidency. While that might be true, these songs likely were written over a year ago or more. I think Josh is really talking about himself and society, offering questions for himself rather than telling anyone how to live their lives. I know in interviews he talked about the importance of seeing the world more clearly and speaking with a clear head. Compare that to the first two albums which were highly influenced by doing all sorts of things to not see clearly (e.g. drugs). What I love about the lyrics and music is this is coming from his heart and inner-voice. Commercially, that is risky as I am sure his fan base would want more theatrical "whiskey-drinking" songs. What he has done is make a really lush, personal album, or at least that is my take after listening to more material from it. Mix wise, his voice is clear and upfront with little processing. I am sure that is done to clearly put the focus on the lyric. He recent performances on SNL this week were fantastic and a sign of good things to come.
Ryan Hicks this song to me came across as being about someone along the lines of Christopher Hitchens. I might be completely wrong, obviously, but that's what I got out of it.
For me, pure comedy is better, at least sonically, then this and then two wildly different perspectives. Haven't had the time to delve into the lyrics yet doe

This doesn't sound like a Bernie Taupin composition...at all. I guess piano=Elton John to 90's born hipsters
