Thank you, Tim! Criterion has some awesome stuff, and I’m usually pleased with most every release I pick up from them. Definitely one of the great boutique labels out there.
Thanks for sharing. Great three-part video. I've been collecting CC titles since the early 2000s. I'm still nowhere near completing the entire collection. As a broke college student back then, renting Criterion DVDs from Netflix was a lifesaver. The first three Criterion's I ever owned were Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, Fellini's 8 1/2, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. These days I just exclusively buy Blu-ray and 4KUHD. I also get distracted by collecting from other home video labels, so that slows down buying CC exclusively. As well as other hobbies. I also don't think I will try to acquire OOP titles unless I get rich one day. Some of those prices are insane. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Daisuke has everything in their collection, including the laserdiscs. He must know where all the deals are. 😉
Hello, Matt. Glad you enjoyed this series and thanks for sharing your collection approach as well! Daisuke has an incredible collection indeed including laserdisc editions. Very impressive. It is a great time to be a lover of film due to the media that is available to us at our fingertips today whether it be physical or streaming, online, etc. Have a great rest of the week! 😊
Suggestion for your next video: Invite me over to your library to pick a few boxsets from your collection and then make a video telling you why I’m picking those boxsets. I’ll bring my own bag to carry the boxsets home
LOL, now that’s an idea! My very own Criterion Closet. 😊. Those are great vids they do over there when they bring people in from the film community to select movies and talk about them.
Cool to see your criterion collection only discovered Criterion collection in March 2021 only heard about it because of UA-cam movie channels. I did get excited and took advantage of July and November sales and now have about 30 Criterion titles, but I have to take a break this year. I need to save my money, lol.
Thanks for sharing your collection. I have about 60 Criterion titles. I have a lot of old Hollywood cinema: Gilda, Some Like It Hot, Mildred Pierce, Leave Her To Heaven. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Leave Her To Heaven starring the very beautiful Gene Tierney as one of the great female villains in cinema. I watched all 3 parts of your collection. I do not remember seeing Eyes Without A Face. That is a great French horror film.
LilannB, yes, I need to go ahead and watch Leave Her to Heaven. I’ve heard good things about it. Thanks for watching the series and thanks for those recommendations including Eyes Without A Face!
Love the collection James. Definitely set some time aside to watch Now, Voyager: I love that film! Come and See was really difficult to get in England as the BBFC banned it for an animal cruelty scene but I found out the Criterion disc was region free, so managed to get a copy on eBay. It blew me away, instantly one of my favourite war films.
Michael, thanks and glad you enjoyed this collection series. Yes, I need to put Now, Voyager in the player soon and see that film starring the incomparable Betty Davis. Come and See was one intense film for sure. Have a great weekend!
James I'm a collector too, and I think we run neck and neck. There maybe only be about ten to twenty criterion that you have that I don't. I purchased some storage shelves off of QVC called Oragami they come in all colors.
That’s awesome that you are a Criterion collector too, Normajean! I love collecting Criterion and am continually amazed at the new discoveries year after year. Thanks for the recommendation on the QVC shelves! 😊
One of the best box sets Criterion ever released was the Carl Dreyer one with Day of Wrath, Ordet and Gertrud but it has yet to receive an upgrade to bluray. I’m not sure if they still own the rights to those films so it may never happen but Ordet and Gertrud are two of the greatest films ever made and Day of Wrath is great too.
Interesting. We shall see if those are ever upgraded but I’m intrigued by the films you mentioned from Dreyer. His The Passion of Joan of Arc was amazing.
After purchasing the Criterion channel, I've been buying less movies.. I Need to go back to buying them to own.. Can't wait to see what box sets you have
Ethan, you know, I don’t believe I have any of Aki Kaurasmaki films in my collection based on the listing on the Criterion site. Any of his films you would recommend for starters?
Le Havre would be a good starting point but all the films Criterion has released are good. He claims The Other Side of Hope will be his final film and it is quite good too. On the Eclipse label Criterion released a box set, The Proletariat Trilogy which also has three really good films. He is very consistent and his films all have a dark humor to them. He has been big influence on Jim Jarmusch.
James, what a beautiful collection! congratulations! I recommend you to get the Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project box sets which includes extraordinary film selection! What about the Godzilla box set? Sometimes I would like to have it and sometimes not!
Juan Carlos, thank you! It’s taken a while to build the collection and Criterion has so much to offer in the area of physical media. Thanks for the recommendation on the World Cinema Project set. I’ll keep that one in mind. As far as the Godzilla set, I’m kinda with you in that I don’t have a strong desire for that edition to be honest. I have the single edition of one of the films from that set and I think that’s enough Godzilla for me 😊.
@@20thand21stMovies James, I find gorgeous the art of the Godzilla set but I am not a total fan of all Godzilla films included in the set, therefore, I would like to invest in getting other Criterion Collection box sets.
Notes on "The Power of the Dog" I quite enjoyed this movie, the tension, the acting, the setting, the cinematography, the pace, the music. I liked the movie. It wasn't exactly what I expected, not that I had read that much about it beforehand. I found it very interesting. It was not a happy or funny film. The ending was most interesting. From the review by Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, "“The Power of the Dog” builds tremendous force, gaining its momentum through the harmonious discord of its performances, the nervous rhythms of Jonny Greenwood’s score and the grandeur of its visuals. Here, in Campion’s sensual realm every ray of light and nubby texture adds to the cascading meaning: the down on a man’s arm, the backlighted mane of a horse, the gleam of running water, a hand on a shoulder. It’s easy to sum up the movie: it is at once a revisionist western, a mystery (pay attention to the gloves!), an exploration of masculinity and femininity, a lament for the limits the world puts on us and those we shoulder until we can no longer bear them. And while it is a tragedy, it is also a liberation story, including for a genre again renewed by a brilliant, unfettered director."
Gary, thank you for sharing thoughts on the Power of the Dog! I’m looking forward to watching it. Got it in my Netflix queue. Jane Campion blew me away with the work on The Piano.
Wow! Awesome collection James. A great mix of movies. You might have almost all the boxsets! Those are wonderful. Outside of the Before Trilogy and Apu Trilogy which other trilogy would you recommend? I also been told by many on the web and UA-cam that The Dekalog is a must own but can’t speak for myself since I never seen it. Thanks again for sharing and Criterion if you are reading give us a box set and flash sale already! 😂 Take care.
Hello, F V, and glad you enjoyed the tour of the collection! As far as trilogy recommendation, one of the box sets I do not currently own is the Three Films by Luis Bunuel set that I have heard is really good. Also, the Dekalog is a nice set with the ten episodes of the series included. Take care and have a great week and, yes, fingers crossed for a sale soon!
I know you don’t do DVDs often but some of the Eclipse box sets Criterion put out are great, especially the three Ozu ones. They also did a Mizoguchi and a Rossellini that were great. They also did another Ozu set of two films under the Criterion label that may never get an upgrade.

I can't offer a first-person report on the Some Like It Hot editions as we're still waiting in Canada for the 4K copies to arrive (it's only been a month 😁). But I have seen some comparison videos online and there is a very clear difference in the quality of the transfers. Based on what I've seen, I would definitely recommend double-dipping on this one. Regarding box sets, fans of surrealism and social satire should consider picking up Three Films by Luis Buñuel in the next sale. I really enjoyed all three films. 👍
Hello, Rob, and thank you for sharing your thoughts on whether the Some Like It Hot 4K is a noticeable upgrade. I may be picking that Kino edition up soon. Also appreciate your recommendation of the Luis Bunuel set. I’ll have to check that one out. Thanks again and have a great week coming up!
Hi, Thomas. Actually, I do have the Dekalog set. It might have been is video 2 of the series assuming it was on the shelf but, yes, I have it and it’s great!
Personally, I thought The Power of the Dog was terribly overrated. The cinematography was beautiful but everything else about it was slow (a boring kind of slow, not an amazing "Babette's Feast" kind of slow). There were a lot of the similar reasons I hated Nomadland, too. It seems like it was all building to make an idealogical point, while forgetting to make it intriguing and entertaining. Parasite, in my opinion, did a perfect job of getting across an ideological message while at the same time making it entertaining and never dull. Unfortunately, this movie was the complete opposite for me.
Jonny, thank you for sharing your take on The Power of the Dog. This is one I need to check out in my Netflix queue soon. Interesting comparison to Babette’s Feast. You also reminded me I still need to see Nomadland at some point. It’s always interesting to hear different perspectives on films - part of what makes it fun 😊.
