This is possibly the most beautiful piece of music, and Floor elevates it to next level.
When doesn't she look fantastic. Then her voice and presentation. And Thoumas composition, and all the rest.
She looks like an absolute Goddess up there , the outfit , physique , hair blowing, the lighting , etc .
I saw Nightwish back in 2004 right before the split with Tarja. They were amazing! I haven’t seen them with Goddess Floor yet. Hopefully I will get my chance whenever they tour again.

One of the early Songs, it is about the solar eclipse "two hundred and twenty two days of light will be desired by the night". Because that's the amount of time that went by before the eclipse (11th of August was the 223rd day of the year 1999). At that time their german record Label asked to write a song about it. One of the terms was "not longer than 3 minutes", Knowing Tuomas, he made it 4+
But it's also true that everyone has a different view of this song.
Usually something they have experienced themselves.
This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs. Sometimes beautiful and calming is called for.

Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999 (Tarja era), the same day with the solar eclipse which occurred in part of Europe and Asia that year.
Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have:
222 days of light will be desired by the night.
coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years.

"I play in a band with him: that’s Emppu [Vuorinen, Nightwish guitarist]. He is an amazing guitar player, but he doesn’t need to fill every gap in the song with meaningless notes. He really keeps the atmosphere [of the songs]. What he plays in Sleeping Sun is beautiful."

This is one of the most beautiful melodies. When i first heard it, it pearced a part of my heart i didn't know existed.
I have not been to their concert, but they are the only band on the planet i would travel anywhere to go see.
The song was released as a maxi single on August 2nd, 1999, to coincide with the total solar eclipse that would occur on August 11th, 1999. This is a wonderful song made absolutely stunning by Floor. Even Tarja's version (the original) is stunning.
I've only seen Nightwish live two (2) times. The first time was in the summer of 2012 with Anette, which unfortunately was a bit disappointing. The band was fantastic (as always) but Anette's voice live was not the best. I loke her studio performances with Nightwish, but for me it never took off live with the older songs made by Tarja. Not even her own stuff was good enough live (for me). I've since then tried to get a chance to see them live in Sweden with Floor but have been away or otherwise occupied when they have been playing in Sweden. But last summer they were ment to play in my hometown Gävle, on a festival. Unfortunately, the company behind the festival went bankrupt and the show was cancelled.
Nightwish however quickly made a new announcement for the same date to have their own headlining show with two support bands. So, on June 3rd, 2023, I finally got to see them live again - now with a heavily pregnant Floor.
She banged her head, windmilled and ran around on stage like she always does. And the fantastic person she is, she spoke to us in fluent Swedish.
A memory to cherish for life.
I do hope to see them soon again, maybe in 2025. I also hope that Floor will do some solo shows in Sweden as well.
Hey Debbie That is one of my favourite Nightwish, songs of all time. I have seen them once 2013 at Wacker , Germany, where Floor sung ghost love score. I was used to see them two years ago, but unfortunately due to a cancer treatment and a surgery I wasn’t able to see them again. You should react to 7 days to the wolves from 2015 live at Wembley. I’m quite sure that you will like it.
I think it is called a moshpit and it is not often you see that at a Nightwish concert. And i am glad that it is not that common. I like to be near the front of the stage and if there are a moshpit there you cant stand and watch. Thats my opinion on it and of course there will be others that does not agree with me

Hi Debbie. I've been at 5 NW concerts in my life. Seen all era's of lead vocalist's and i was really broken after band and Tarja called it quits. I was sure band can't recover from that, and because of that I don't think i gave Anette real chance to impress me. She as a great singer too, very different from Tarja, complete opposite actually.
I can appreciate her later in life tho. But when i saw NW with Floor first time in 2015 at Ratina stadium, Tampere Finland i was so mesmerized.
I think i missed half the set just because she was so beautiful and inviting on that stage. Time just flu by so fast. After that i had to see them soon again. And i saw rhem next year, outside of Finland for first time. I'd like to come to USA to see NW in future if they start touring again. Never been in States, and now that i have lot of friends from there it would be awesome trip.
I know what you mean. Annette is a great singer, but she didn’t fit into Nightwish, nevertheless the two records with Annette are great , but I love floor singing these songs

FYI, I have seen Nightwish 3 times live, at times where they weren't as big as now, 1999-2004, so always with Tarja and in quite small venues. But it was just as great back then, you could still talk to the band after the concerts, get signatures and stuff...

Tuomas was asked to write a song about the 1999 solar eclipse. At first he said no, that's not how he writes songs, he doesn't just pick a topic and knock out a tune. He finally relented and wrote this masterpiece. The "222 days of light will be desired by a night" lyric refers to the fact that the 1999 eclipse occurred on Aug.11, 1999...the 223rd day of the year...so 222 "days of light" came before that date...GENIUS!

Sadly I didn't discover Nightwish until the pandemic. Since then they came thru my area once, and I had all intentions of going, but my health and crippling back injury were flaring up major that day, and I could not attend.
I've been to around concerts (mostly rock/metal) in my life, but am bummed that Nightwish is not one of them yet.
Saw Nightwish with Annette, was at the Wembley show, should have seem them in 2021 but covid happened and could not make the rescheduled date. Plus if it counts 'live at the island arms'

Hiya Debbie:) Do you know about the upcoming total Solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 in North America? Well this song was written for the total Solar eclipse of August 11, back in 1999 in Europe, hence the title (Sleeping Sun). At some point, the lyrics of this track say " 222 days of light, will be desired by a night ". Take January 1st add 222 days to it and you'll end up at August 11th. For this Eclips we need to change that lyric into; " 99 days of light will be desired by a night ", as January 1st plus 99 days is April 8th. (2024 is a leap year). So in a way this track could work it's magic once again, just like it did 25 years ago. Ohh.....and If you have the opportunity to attend this natural phenomenon, I highly recommend you go see it (in the 100% totality zone, 99% is not enough). You don't know what you'll experience, it's not every year after all that you don't have to travel halfway around the world to witness this natural phenomenon.

Hey Debbie, I absolutely adore Floor. Her voice is amazing. But, with that said, you need to watch the live concert video with Tarja singing Sleeping Sun. Like I said, I love Floor. But, the video with Tarja is amazing as well.

You can’t compare tarja with floor. They both nailed it in their kind of singing. The early Nightwish records are definitely the best
@t.schumacher9903 they are both amazing and unique in my opinion. Some songs I prefer Tarja's operatic sound. It depends on each person's taste 😊
Now you should go back and listen to a live version with Tarja as the singer.
