Don't apologize for highlighting this issue. We took on an allotment plot last year where previous tenants had tried to control weeds with layers of landscape fabric, plastic tarps and 1970s shag pile nylon carpet which were all disintegrating into thousands of pieces. The 'decontamination' has taken literally hundreds of hours and is still ongoing. Sadly, many allotment sites are some of the most polluted places around - this needs to be said and it needs to change.

Carpet has been banned from the site I’m on but there are still old plots covered in it. It seems that in the 1980 / 90’s it was common practice. There is a constant pile of weed matted carpet on the skip pile. I guess we can’t blame past generations for not knowing what they were doing but now we know the impact we just have to educate.

10°C is nice! We've been down to around 4°C over night. Hoping to reach 10°C during night time soon so I can get my plants out early and hopefully have an easier/shorter hardening off period.
About the rubbish: They should almost fine the previous "owner" for leaving all that crap to be honest. And I think you did the right ting throwing away most of it, saving yourself some time and sanity. Whoever had the idea would have been better putting rats in instead of rubbish. We had an area like that when we first got our plot, it too was supposed to be a compost heap!! Ive just thought, you could have used a riddle to help seperate the soil from debris. Maybe a bit late after the fact but its the usual for me, after its done the hard way then think of the easy way lol. Also try to keep the slow worms away from you beds, apparently their partial to eating earth worms as well which is not so good for the soil.

That's just straight up pollution there!
It might be worth seeing if you can borrow a metal detector to sweep the area as that can change the ph when it rusts.
Not sure i mentioned it but those rhubarb knobs are individual rhizome plants and are often split every 3 years. It is a bit late in the season for that now but worth doing next winter, either to get more rhubarb plants in the allotment or as a gift. It looks like it hasn't been split in some time, due to the amount of babies there are there. "Forcing" the unsplit old rhubarb plant can exhaust it out. All forcing does is gets it producing earlier. Being on the South coast, i wouldn't think it would be necessary, plus the rhubarb will be thinner and leggy.
Going back to all of that rubbish, when we were renovating our garden, we found a load of glass and plastic bottles, tubes and stuff buried at the back of the garden (as well a dog!). What was worse, was that the previous owners had put a fence in front of the trees along the back of the garden and then filled the area fence height with garden rubbish and all sorts in plastic bags!
We ended up hiring a skip to empty it all as there were things like these little glass morphine capsules, bike parts and a mummified rat we called Roger!
Out of the 4 trees, the lilac tree/ shrub is surviving well. The conifer was recovering from being covered in ivy, until one neighbour cut it back and then the new neighbours next door, decided to cut it back so far it in May that it went into shock and is pretty much dead now.
In terms of space, we reclaimed back it's about 2-3 metres in depth and about 5-6 metres wide. We cut a door shaped hole in the fence for access and put down some slabs for steps. We also put down some pallets and some left over roofing roll sheet as a floor so we can store the BBQ, mini shed, wheelbarrow and pots, etc. We did have a Wendy house for the kid, like a secret den but they were scared of the spiders, so that didn't last long! lol

I know it totally stressed you out and pushed you to your limits but I think it’s great that you had this problem. As you are showing your progress warts and all it does give a very accurate picture of what to expect when taking on a neglected plot. It would so easy to paint a picture of it all being sunshine and roses but the reality is that sometimes you have to spend hours in the cold and wet sorting through piles of rubbish. Now people will realise that it’s not easy and that’s a good thing. I think too many people take on a plot and don’t understand what’s involved. Well now they do.
