Happo Kumite trains reaction, the right feeling for distance, stamina and fighting spirit. It is not intended as a "realistic" self-defence drill. And it certainly prepares you to switch directions quickly when needed. Obviously some people don't get it.
Reading the comments most are disrespectful and without any deeper knowledge. This is one of the exercises for my students. It is preparation for a fight and esp. important for developing body AND mind.
So the essence of this is that everyone waits their turn [in a predictable attacking sequence and target], and that the logical next attacker must wait until and illogical time to attack? Look I fully understand that each form of kumite has it's own flaw, and that if we practice enough of them we will get more of the bigger picture. However this kumite 'drill' seems especially flawed in that it actually recommends turning one's back on likely attackers.

Thank you Jack Slack!!!
you'd be surprised at how inefficiently this works
you would be surprised how efficient it works for kids and women who learnt from a real sensei
