DREMEL CARVING STONE. I have been following "Carvingandsuch" on UA-cam. He is a wood carver using Dremel and Foredom rotary tools. He takes a simple approach to carving that is inspirational to any would-be carver. One of his videos showed how to carve this little Owl. I thought I would give it a go on a stone boulder.
I used an ordinary electric drill and my Parkside Dremel type rotary grinder.
When carving stone using a water supply to cool and lubricate the burrs is essential, it also keeps the dust down, a serious matter when carving stone slate or granite. I have shown how to set up a water feed for carving stone in another video linked below. The Parkside rotary grinder is a safe tool to use with water, although it is mains powered it runs through a transformer and the machine itself is only 12 volt.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well using an ordinary drill with diamond bit worked. It actually made quite a good stone carving machine, at least for roughing out.
Picking up a rough boulder and buying a cheap rotary grinder would be a simple way to try out this absorbing craft hobby. The Parkside cordless rotary tool is a particularly good Dremel type machine for the price and would be ideal for carving beginners.
