Floyd Red Crow Westerman - Just Another Holy Man

This is an amazing video of the late Floyd Red Crow Westerman performing Kris Kristofferson's 'They Killed Him' (thanks AuroraKismet ;-) ) at the Rainbow Warrior Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico in August of 1988.
I had the privilege of stage managing that event and of all the 20+ amazing acts on the bill, this song stuck out as one of the most moving of the entire 12 hours of music. Authentic, powerful, moving...real.
I was producer of an event a few months following this event in LA at the Director's Guild theater. Floyd was invited to lead the invocation. Turns out he walked down the main isle with a burning bundle of sage...that was about to set off the fire alarm, trigger the sprinklers and send 500 people out the door, ruining the event. He didn't know...and I didn't know that this would be an issue....but there it was...bigger than life. I tried to communicate that he needed to snuff out the sage but he went on with his invocation (which, of course, was beautiful)...and there I am...the white boy idiot...flailing my arms for him to put out the fire...and him looking at me like I'm, well, the white boy idiot. Afterwards I approached him and apologized, explained the situation with the fire department and all...and he said...'Well, I guess that's another good example of 'a clash of cultures'' and turned away. What do you say to that? It's too true. I wanted to go hide under a rock but we had an event to do...but that stuck with me.
    I loved Floyd's performance...from the heart of a true Sage...to you.
    Enjoy with love....
    Chance

The earth is truely missing a gifted man of peace and civil rights activist. It brings tears to my eyes to think about this great man and our loss. Thanks for posting and reminding us all of this great man. May he walk in peace with the elders, holy men and chiefs that he so respecteed.

My Mom took summer classes at Bemidji, MN in the late 60's, and was very impressed by the man who had sung these beautiful songs that were very dear to her heart... She bought his album and soon my sister and were singing along, word for word.... Although we never actually met Mr. Westerman; we have always been huge fans!!

As long as our human teachings carry on we never really die. Our spirit of love can never be destroyed and even if we feel it can, our love can always be reborn into a new light. Are we willing to change our point of view on life for the benefit of the future even if we do not agree with everything together as a people? Floyd Red Crow, to me you are still here.

me too, and I will never forget that day...at a Pow Wow and conference called the "Medicine Ways Conference"...in So CA at UCSB... where he was a guest speaker and singer, doing this song and many others....He blew my mind....My wife handed him a little piece of paper with a little spontaneous drawing she did of the USA flag, only instead of the stars, on the blue background, she drew a big nazi symbol there...He looked at it , and smiled and said, "Yes , you understand, that's just what we have had to deal with here in this country"....

+SuperBarneyd X Files also brought me here. How interacting that a show exploring the "otherness" and "possibilities" of the universe makes people look up a man who is such a huge advocate of our world that we live on. I wonder if he thought about the questions that people would in the future ask about him, all
Sparked from a Sci Fi show. I can't stop hearing him sing and listen to his speeches. Just goes to show that everything we do matters to someone, much less the world around us.

Artists' works will be here to speak to generations after we are gone and without knowing a lot about this artist, it was immediately obvious that he left a great light & inspiration. Like Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Peter Tosh & many others. @@IsnalaW Funny that ive heard this many times from Indigenous people. Its in many books written by indigenous, guess they are just liars?... Whats the truth then if you know it? One problem is that Native Americans are also of many tribes and wisdom. Not all are one in this teaching, it is spoken of many times over though. Just a point, if you have a real answer, speak it and maybe not just post rude slaps in the face, where is your wisdom or teaching of accuracy?

@@IsnalaW Makes sense to me.. A lot of history lost due to the terrible things of the past as well. I may be white but I dislike the past people who did what they did to take this country. Its hard for me to hear this is the best country in the world because it really only means, we have the most expensive military killing machine. I had posted this elsewhere and i will post this for you, White man even killed their own savior Jesus. (thats if he was even real) That will tell you how smart governments are. A lot of people do not agree with the past and its sad what people say about white people when many of us are born this color, we did not do these things, yet we are still blamed for it as a whole when we all know 98% of us have nothing to do with it beyond the color of our skin. Thank you for all your words, i was not trying to upset anyone here, just its great to hear truth about such things.

I was privileged to stage manage this event and then exec produce a fundraiser in L.A. at the Director’s Guild Theater for Rainbow Warrior a couple months later. Red Crow was there to do the invocation and opened the evening with several other native dancers. What we didn’t know was those dancers would lead Red Crow into the theater with incense smoldering in large, swinging burners. Huge amounts of smoke wafting towards the active smoke detectors in the ceiling. Fire Marshals were there and told me I needed to get them to put out the incense burners immediately or risk the event being prematurely ended by the fire alarms going off. So there I am, down front, this panicked young white boy, waving my arms, nearly yelling and absolutely disrupting Red Crows invocation. Thankfully, the dancers took the incense outside and disaster was narrowly averted. After, I had to explain the scenario to Red Crow and profusely apologize. He looked at me (I was all of 28 years old at the time) and said…’well…I guess we’ll have to chalk it up to a clash of cultures.’ …and walked away. I felt like SUCH a…I don’t even know what…but it wasn’t good. I later realized the depth and beauty of the whole experience but in the moment I felt like I’d really f’d up. A rich, real and memorable experience that I will never forget.
