  • Every year we plant about 10 fruit trees and about 20 eucalyptus - all according to the Ellen White principle. Since we have had success with this method, we do not shy away from the work. See our video

    Since we have very clayey soil here in Uruguay (Balneario Kiyú), we had to come up with something - so we came up with the Ellen White method. This film is just an example of how to do it. There are still many variants. The charged biochar isn't strictly necessary, but it improves the soil dramatically. See our video

    16 months after planting our fruit trees with the above planting holes I have posted another video in order to show the process.

    That's awesome. I have the same soil, and I've always wanted to do that. I'm trying to figure things out with my soil now, how and when and where and what to plant. So many factors and so much to learn. You don't pussyfoot around. haha

    Tree= $20 bucks
    The planting process= $200

      You are right - but we have a choice. Either the trees die, or after two years we have the trees full of fruit. This planting process is only necessary when you have really clay soils.

    This is really cool! I tried planting some things in very hard clay soil and im guessing water sat in the holes because the plants died :( I need to figure out drainage…

      That happened with us in the beginning. We lost many trees and others were just wasting away. But now our trees are healthy and are growing very fast.

    Wood at the bottom might be ok but only a few pieces for sure. The tap root won't be nitrogen sensitive. The rest of the hole containing wood is a bad idea.

      Thank you for your input. It's a technique by Sepp Holzer, Permaculture in Austria. We have copied his idea. But our trees are thriving - the peach- apricot- and plumtrees are FULL of fruit.

      @@parqueyatay4547 I hear ya. I actually like adding wood in some applications. I've gotten some poor results with -pH and Nitrogen lock with wood that wasn't ready though. Prunus and sap woods probably ok. I did enjoy the video. Well done and thought out. I'm planting some so I'll give it a whirl on a dozen trees or so.

    After all these layers of things I thought they were making a 7 layer burrito because at the end I never saw a tree planted in the hole 😂

      True - but Instead of a tree, we put our little garden gnome in the planting hole. And - OMG - he is so big and tall now.

    The easiest cheapest and most effective way to plant trees. Dig a hole the size of the root ball cover the hole and the root ball with a mycorrhizae inoculant specific for what type of tree your growing. Add 2 inch layer of compost twice a year. Let the microbes and fungi do their job because they will break down those layer of clay and the compost will provide the future humus that will create an aerated, fertile and well draining soil in the years to come.

      True, though the factor that could make or break the success in this case is water. Too little or too much really hurt the process. Too much being difficult to control without something more radical like this.
