  • In this video I repair a Viking Quilt Designer II by replacing the stepping motor. It is the motor that makes the machine zig-zag.

    Thank you very much. Very good video to take the cover off. Very useful to a french user of Quilt Designer II that I enjoy so much.

    Thank You! Just installed a replacement stepper motor (Digikey, per your suggestion) for zig zag control on a Viking 600 Rose. On the Rose the stepper motor axle points downward toward the needle. Centered the needle using the cam and it works like a charm. You are a genius!

    This worked great. I used part PM42S-048-HHCB from digikey. I swapped out the red for yellow wires. Working great now.

    Great video I had the same problem with my Designer SE January 2015, could not get a stepper motor and had the same response from NBM. We found a SE machine on eBay sold as faulty and used the motor from that to fix mine, I have since had the main drive motor fail, so took the replacement from the donor machine. Cheaper than buying a motor from Husqvarna and I have lots of spares now to keep mine going for now! I have several friends with Husqvarna machines and these motors are always going faulty.

    Great repair video. Thanks.
    Sadly it seems to have become a common practice in Sweden. Volvo, Electrolux and Husqvarna are making money from expensive products, cheap components, expensive parts as well as labor. Unless money isn't an issue, If you can't find the parts from a third party and repair them yourself, you should not consider buying them!

    I think it is also possible to replace these BIpolar motors with a Unipolar NMB PM42S-048 motors being sold on Ebay for $5 (223041438618) subject to a simple conversion to bipolar wiring. This can be done from outside the motor on the circuit board by de-soldering the central two of the 6 pins which go to the centrepoint of each coil (and breaking circuit including circuit trace btw the two centre taps) and removing it's 5th wire and then using the two coils (now with increased torque) in the same way as the old motor. (wire colours are different so... think) With these specific $5 motors you have to remove the alum cog (cut and pry) to take the required screw adjust Viking one, and maybe shorten the shaft slightly (dremel). I have converted two motors just in case as my existing gets hot, but will only implement on failure. they are same size/mounting/steps and voltage but slightly different ohms.. but ought to work.

    Excellent video and I agree Husqvarna Viking has left their customers hanging. Customer service is not even a word in their in vocabulary anymore. They used to be a great company that made an awesome machine, not anymore. For the prices they charge for their machines they should be ashamed of themselves for riding on the past good name only now to put out a mediocre product and then of course not back it up with proper customer service. I will NEVER buy another Husqvarna Viking machine again unless it is for parts (which sadly many of us have had to do because of the inept training of their service people).

    My wife has the Topaz 10 it was throwing thread she wanted to take it in its 300 bucks to service so I started looking at it found some stuff on the shaft for the presser foot and in where thread goes through before the needle now it works fine . The little bit of dust will do it .

    Great video. Thanks for showing how to take it apart. I've had mine for about 15 years.
    Has your wife had any problems with the bobbin winder? Mine has stopped working twice. Since taking it apart I'm not sure if it is broken or there is just a piece missing....
    I am going to give this machine to my daughter in law since I have recently purchased a new/different brand. Would like to fix it before giving to her. No longer have a viking dealer around. I saw I can buy the part on line so thought about fixing it myself. Any thoughts on that?

      I didn't really look at the bobbin. I would just dig into it and see how it worked.

    Hi my name is Jenny I bought a huskavarna sapphire in a estate sale boxed like new in the beginning it was working perfectly then suddenly it showed up that the main motor overloaded I was watching this video looks very helpful but I have a question .
    It the main motor and the stepping motor the same thing ? Please if you can explain me I will appreciated.

    • @mars1952
      @mars1952  6 років тому

      I am guessing that the "main motor" is the drive motor that powers the up and down action of the needle. I am not a sewing machine technician. I just have a knack for fixing things. If I can get it to come apart without breaking, I can fix it.

    Thank you very much . Sadly todays Husqvarna sewing maskines are a piece of plastic junk . They are not worth the high price you pay for them .I have several HQ machines latest from 2000. No new junk.

    Where did you finally purchase the motor from?

    • @mars1952
      @mars1952  8 років тому +1

      +MisClaudia Ren'e I bought the stepping motor from the Digi-Key website. Part number P14342. Keep in mind that you will have to modify the motor and I am sorry to say that my discription of how to make the modifications in this video is not very clear.
