7:45 First thing I thought was "this guy is driving waaay too fast in that kind of terrible visibility". I've driven in some of the worst snowstorms of Northern Ontario that made that one look like a light dusting, ones where they close the roads just behind me. I would be under 50km/h in that kind of bad visibility. It doesn't matter if the pavement for your lane is clear or a plow passed the guy in front, he was doing the right thing and driving slow in terrible visibility. You have to be able to come to a complete stop in the distance that you can see, because there could be a car already crashed and not moving. This is why you get huge car pileups, people driving faster than they can safely see ahead.

Ya...if you can't see more than 5 to 15 feet in front of you/roughly a block or half a block ahead you either should not be driving if you don't need to (no one really should in said conditions but unfortunately work/life requires it half the time so outside the government outright banning travel in said conditions (don't think they legally can...granted they legally can't force mask/vaccine mandates (Supreme Court ruled as such themselves) but their trying to force it anyway))...or at best keeping to sub 20mph...especially when you consider ice, sludge, wind, weight of the car/truck (main reason the truck with trailer would go so low at the 1 minute or so mark since the extra weight means it'll slow downa nd come to a stop slower than without the trailer and make it easier to lose traction) etc into account on top of the visibility issue.
When bad weather conditions come into the play the phrase "slow and steady wins the race" really comes into play...cause going slow and carefully means you live, driving face and recklessly means you've got a better chance of getting yourself killed.
Maybe i don't have the right to really say anything as i don't drive, had my permit over a decade ago in high school but never got around to getting my license as I didn't really get enough time/experience on the road and the permit expired after a while and i took too long to get it renewed that now i gotta take the test/get a physical again just to get the test and haven't had the time for it. There's also the fact i've never really needed a car/license as i've either had a ride to take me where i needed to go (parents/sibling/friend), public trans (for things like work...and would've used the train anyway as my past jobs (out of work at moment) were in center city and driving there takes longer and isn't worth the headache), or just walked there. With that said will probably need to get a license soon since i dont' really want to go back to working in center city anymore (place has become unsafe from a crime rate standpoint so not only do i want to not work from there but I honestly even want to move away from my current suburban area of the city, which is also becoming worse yearly in the same regard, and further out into the State...or another State entirely (mine's run by a moron anyway so moving out of State is looking more and more tempting tbh...just need to hope i can get a job in a place i'd want to move to of course) and since i'd be out of state or in the rural areas i'd definitely need a car for traveling to work and other places/grocery shopping at bare minimum. With that said never particularly liked driving tbh due to how many idiots on the road have nearly gotten me in accidents when i'm just the passenger (feels like 70% of people driving today should not have licenses tbh).

Once the wheels start slipping in snow and ice, there's little to no control unless your tires are lucky enough to grab a little pavement, or a little gravel on the shoulder to get traction. Your best bet is let go of the breaks and hope your wheels stop slipping enough to get a tiny bit of traction off the packed snow and try to steer away, but in tight corners like that, you don't have the time it takes for those wheels to get spinning again. (or the grandma on a Sunday drive on Wednesday.....) sure there's laws on that in each state but that's not the situation the video nor the OP (who is referencing the video) is talking about. Thus none of those laws apply.
I cant find any state that making the claim your making when it comes to those 2 requirements. Road conditions and getting off the highway when below the speed limit. One or the other.
I can find multiple states under the general "Basic Speeding Law" saying something along the general lines of "You must travel at a reasonable *safe* speed for the road traffic and conditions, regardless of posted speed limit"...
Nothing that says that you have to get off the highway when road conditions are bad... (
So you can be traveling say 35 MPH on a 70 MPH highway if the roads are really bad and NOT have to get off. (I'd personally recommend not driving in those condition but not everyone has that luxury and will need to travel...) I'll link a few states below me but you'll find most states have this "basic speed law".

I love how so many of these are big pickup trucks and SUVs with 4WD or AWD. Just because all four tires turn when you hit the gas doesn't mean you can defy the laws of physics. 4WD doesn't mean 4 wheel stop. Most of the accidents I see are either trucks who thought the road conditions wouldn't affect them or cars that thought their bald tires were perfectly suitable for icy road conditions. I stay off the roads in weather like this just so I'm not clobbered by those idiots.

The gentleman giving the car a push in the parking lot takes me back to the day when cars had real bumpers, not plastic shells. You could put just about anything between the bumpers to keep them from scratching and push someone. Someone could have a dead battery or a bad starter, you'd give them a push, they'd pop the clutch and drive away. No more big chrome bumpers or stick shifts with a clutch. Ah, memories.

7:30--That stretch of highway 287 heads north from Fort Collins, CO, to Laramie, WY. It is an uphill stretch until a few miles into WY, and this video is shot on the slightly downhill grade after that. The gain in elevation from Fort Collins to the border is almost 3000 feet. The area is often very windy and can be dangerous at any time of year. Yes, the driver was going much too fast for visibility and road conditions. He should have avoided the road altogether at that time.

The guys with the trailer were smart, driving slow due to the weather. The one who crashed in the dip, obviously not concerned for his own safety or others as long as he gets to where he wants to go.

If the road looks clear and you could always hear the "hum" of the road from your tires and all at once it's quiet. If there is no change in the color (texture) of the road, what you do next is really important. Take your foot off the gas, keep the wheels straight, do NOT touch the brake and coast until that hum returns. You have just crossed over to black ice. Have been there before and was driving with all-wheel drive. THIS does not make a damn bit of difference on ice. I've driven trucks, armored personnel carriers (APC's) 44 pac buses and stick shifts in over 50 years of driving. Just trying to keep you guys ( and gals) safe during winter driving.
