Do you practice Mantis? Let us know your lineage and favourite form in the comments!
(2:30) is this the same Lee Kwan Shan from Wah Lum Praying Mantis Kung Fu USA?
@@eanthony2274 no
@@MonkeyStealsPeach I did a little a while back in 2010 in Vietnam. The teacher named it Tanglang Quan but I believe it had been mixed with our local styles already. I was fascinated at 06:14 to know from whom the art was spreaded to Vietnam :) My teacher however was so keen on conditioning the body, doing partner drills and breaking down the forms into applications rather than practicing the forms, pretty much what you train with your Sifu and brother in ua-cam.com/video/by9vbfy4sXM/v-deo.html. So sorry I don't know the names of any forms which belong to Mantis. Some keywords like Luohan DoanDa, 8 joint principle cross my mind and sorry now I can barely remember :D
A criticism - stop putting that bassboosted music on your videos, I tend to skip those parts and it ruins the whole video
@@MonkeyStealsPeachyou’re blunt reply is kinda of telling…?
I love your observation about the evolution of styles being as important as the tradition. It's amazing how different styles get shaped by the people who practiced them.
Thank you!
My teacher was a student of Won Honfan, of 7 star mantis, only learned 十八叟。 Also had some experience with Taiwanese 6 harmonies mantis, learned 铁齿 and 善手奔.
it is rejuvenating seeing open minded documentaries like that!.
Used to think it was a very old TCMA, but turns to be quite modern… Thank you for all your hard work.
Nice one! Thanks!
Its nice to hear the names of people I only heard from me teacher...
Thanks for all your work, it is very important for the preservation, study and propagation of traditional martial arts. I'm from Brazil, I practice Taiji lineage, my teacher is Luiz de Souza, student of master Li Fei Lin. Cheers!
Oh cool, in that case your teacher and I are Kung Fu brothers!
Awesome work as always. Commenting for the algorithm.
Greetings from Chile :)
Thankyou for your research bro….your definitely on the right track…..like those old clips
This was a really great series!
I really enjoy your work. It's very much appreciated. Btw, I received one of your shirts for my birthday, which made my day.
That’s awesome
I love this stuff 👍🙂 Thanks Will
I practice Liuhe Tanglang Quan. Ding Zicheng -> Zhang Xiangsan lineage.
About my favorite forms, I'd say it's Duan Chui (not really Liuhe Tanglang) and Tie Ci.
Again, liked and shared.
This miniseries explains the background behind the a lot of the tropes I encounter in Wuxia cinema.
Great stuff, keep it up!
Very interesting indeed!!! Many thanks! :)
Hi I liked that short film it was good...I also practice 7 star mantis tong long tao tow mui far lo n sab pa Sao are very nice forms also the monkey forms a pretty cool too...and gong Li is also a very useful form
Ooooohh! Nice one!
My teacher is a direct lineage of Liu He tanglang quan(六合螳螂拳)丁子成-張詳三+劉雲樵-徐紀。But I learned Baji not tanglang. Thanks for the great documentary. Hope you do one on soft mantis.
I used to practice qixing tang lang quan from the Lin Jing Shan lineage that was brought here in the Philippines by his diciple shifu Zhong Lian Bao.My favorite form was the stealing the peach fist form of qixing tang lang quan.
Awesome! Sifu Arnold is a friend of mine and I’ll be seeing him in Manila in a few days!
@@MonkeyStealsPeach Wow,thats great news sir 😊👍
Fantastic!!
A few comments; (1) Jing Wu significantly pre-dates Central Guoshu Academy, (2) influence of Japanese martial arts upon Central Guoshu is not speculative, well documented by contemporaneous sources and (3) Central Guoshu did not downplay fighting aspect, they in fact tried to make fighting more modern, practical and central to the practices
Northern Mantis, Wong Hong Fan lineage in Hong Kong. :)
Favourite Form is Mui Fa Lok (梅花落)
Much love, I would like some insite . On why , Wha Lum ( Nothern praying Mantis)
has a lot of Choy lay fut in the format. ? Was it the wha- lum temple ?
Wah Lum was pretty much formulated in America based on a mix of styles. Mantis is only one small component.
Hao Family- taiji meihua tanglang quan. Naming a favorite form is difficult to say. Maybe chuanzhi 1 or zhaiyao 1? But it's hard not to like the two handed sword.
Can you do a video on drunken fist
Any chance some Taiji Mantis apparel will be coming soon??? 🙂
I need to do it, yes! Will work on some designs when I finish my trip
Do you think that northern praying mantis is superior to the southern one?
4:34
Awesome documentary. I’m curious, which style of mantis consist mostly of striking or having a higher percentage of punching appose to grappling? I’m assuming it’s 7 star mantis.
I’d say its a mostly even mix all round tbh. Probably depends more on the individual teacher’s focus
Hey I really enjoyed this series on mantis boxing! This may be a naive question, I discovered your channel through Jesse Enkamp and I'm not overly knowledgeable regarding chinese ma. In karate the original applications to kata created prior to the mid 20th century have all been lost to history with only a few (debatably no) exceptions. Is the same true for mantis and other forms of chinese martial arts or have the practical applications and partner drills survived along with their corresponding forms?
That does happen sometimes in CMA, but it depends. I'm not a Mantis guy, but I would say that it is less likely to happen to a style like Mantis than it would for a style like Tai Chi.
@@ambulocetusnatans thanks! Do you say that because mantis puts more of a focus on the combative side of the art than tai chi?
I know this wasn’t commented under my Q&A questions post, but I may answer this in that, coz its a good one that’s worthy of more than a short reply here
@@MonkeyStealsPeach thanks appreciate it :)
Will try to publish the q&a around 15th if my internet connection is ok in Manila
Thanks for making this documentary! I noticed you mentioned that Zhao Zhuxi's taiji mantis isn't from the same lineage as the one you practice. Do you know what the background of his style is?
It’s Meihua Mantis, I think from Sun Yuan Chang line iirc
@@MonkeyStealsPeach ah I see, thank you! The mantis family really is large and diverse.
Legendas em português 🙌
Glitch at 3:21.
Shiiiiiiiit…. Must have happened while uploading coz it was fine after I exported it from iMovie
I figure it was "Japanese-colonized"?
@@bpsutherland those are the mangled words, yes. But I was pointing the glitch because of the strive for top quality that Will has.
@@lelionnoir4523 thanks. It’s pretty annoying coz if I delete an reupload, the overlord that is the algorithms will punish me
@@MonkeyStealsPeach Then absolve thy sin by doing perfect English subtitles, then. 😌
It truly looks like fighting art for the autistic (esp. 7.09), however, I am fascinated by it nonetheless.
Actually I do have autism, thanks for pointing that out
MA family Mantis
Cck Mantis Vietnam branch
Ma family as well.
Wait, I also heard that martial arts were practiced by the rich only, because only they had the time and money to spend on learning them.
Its partly true, but a bit more complicated than that. Its actually a future video topic I have on my list
I practice eight step and seven star mantis through the Wutan (武壇) organization in Taiwan.
I always thought Wutan was a weird way of romanising 武当… nice to see the actual characters
In the US it's often romanized as wutang...but alas we are not the wutang clan (rap group)
@@vietle87 Would be awesome if you were. I'd love to see Rizza bust out a mantis form. Lol
@@davidbarnwell_virtual_clas6729 ain't that the truth
@@vietle87 Yep, he'd bust out a form and shout, "Wu-Tang!!" and Dave Chappelle would always be coming up to shoot Netflix specials . It'd be lit man.
That would be amazing.
For reals, somebody gotta teach the Rizza some Chinese martial arts.
