  • THE ANOK YAI DOCUMENTARY.
Anok Yai is a Sudanese-American model who has taken the fashion industry by storm with her striking beauty, unique look, and undeniable talent. Born in Egypt in 1997, Anok grew up in New Hampshire, where she attended Manchester High School West before enrolling at Plymouth State University to study biochemistry.
Despite her academic pursuits, Anok had always been interested in fashion and modeling, and it was during her sophomore year at college that her life took a dramatic turn. While attending Yardfest, a homecoming party at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Anok was scouted by a photographer who was struck by her stunning features and natural charisma. The photographer took a few candid photos of Anok and posted them on Instagram, which quickly went viral and caught the attention of modeling agencies across the world.
Within a matter of days, Anok was contacted by top modeling agencies like Next Model Management, Wilhelmina Models, and Elite Model Management, all of whom were eager to sign her. After much consideration, Anok ultimately decided to sign with Next Model Management, which had a long-standing reputation for discovering and developing some of the most successful models in the industry.
Anok's rise to fame was meteoric. Within a few months of signing with Next, she had landed her first major campaign with Prada, which featured her as the face of their Fall/Winter 2018 collection.
The booking broke history, with Anok becoming the first Sudanese, and second Black woman ever to open a Prada fashion show.
The campaign was a huge success and catapulted Anok into the spotlight, making her one of the most talked-about models of the season.
Since then, Anok has gone on to work with some of the most prestigious brands in the world, including Estée Lauder, Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, and Valentino. She has graced the pages of magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Harper's Bazaar, and has walked the runway for top designers at fashion weeks in Paris, Milan, London, and New York.
Anok's success as a model is not just due to her stunning looks, but also her unique background and perspective. As a Sudanese-American, Anok brings a fresh perspective to the fashion industry, challenging traditional beauty standards and paving the way for more diverse representation on the runway and in campaigns.
In interviews, Anok has spoken about the importance of representation in the fashion industry and the need for more diversity and inclusivity. She has also been vocal about her experience growing up as a person of color in America and the challenges she has faced as a result of systemic racism.
Despite the challenges, Anok remains dedicated to using her platform to promote change and inspire others. In 2020, she launched the Anok Yai Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underprivileged youth through education and mentorship programs. The foundation partners with schools and community organizations to provide resources and support to students from marginalized communities, helping them to achieve their full potential and pursue their dreams.
Anok's impact on the fashion industry and beyond cannot be overstated. She has shattered barriers and broken down stereotypes, paving the way for a new generation of models and activists. Her unique perspective and unwavering dedication to promoting change have made her a role model for people all over the world.
In her personal life, Anok is known for her humility and down-to-earth personality. Despite her rapid rise to fame, she remains grounded and committed to her family and community. In interviews, she has spoken about the importance of staying true to oneself and never losing sight of one's values, no matter how successful one becomes.
As she continues to make her mark on the fashion industry, Anok shows no signs of slowing down. With her incredible talent, unique perspective, and unwavering dedication to promoting change, she is poised to become one of the most influential figures of her generation.
**Liya Kebede’s Estée Lauder contract was in 2003, not 2002.

Anok Yai, is just another example of how models of African descent, can be extremely influential in the world of fashion. There are so many names of the past: I'll name a few, Iman Abdul Majhid, of course everyone knows the one named model, Katoucha Niane r.i.p, one of my favorites ( please look her up, ), Rebecca Ayoko, another favorite,Ana Gethana, another favorite,Sadiya Guheye, absolutely beautiful, Alex Wek, seeing her in person was, like damn she's really pretty like a baby doll come too life, Ubah Hassa, and Amelia Virelli, a model of compelling gravitas, ust too name a few that come to mind. But I would be remiss to not include Mr. Yves Saint Laurent, who hand picked and consistently worked with models of African descent, as was also mentioned by Iman, when she went to castings at Saint Laurent. Good stuff my friend, please continue to post. Cheers!!!🎉

I really love that these kind of videos and content of her are being made while she is still walking runways and working, like we don't need to only cherish models when their careers are over, but we can celebrate them in the meantime, she deserves all the hype, a real proffesional supermodel 💜

This comment. THIS. 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿 It pretty much echoes the mission statement for this channel, and BLACK GLOSS as a project:
Frankly, as much as we all love it, this industry will dispose models at such a high rate. I want to make sure there’s history to reference back to, especially when it’s often so scarce. Highlights to reflect on. They deserve.
Especially in context of Black models. Thanks for watching! 🥹🙌🏿

I grew up in the place whe no afropeople, we just never had emigrants from Africa. I lived in Middle Asia, Russia... but i know racism and nationalism (in a bad sense of it). Person can be white, absolutely, like me for example, but armenian, for example, and unpleasant things will be thrown in the face in a flash. I speak absolutely pure russian, beautiful literature russian, but still there are people who might call me unpleasantly just for my exotic name. Even the fact I'm cristian doesn't make sense for such a people))) i guess, that such attitude will exist forever. But of course both sides have to develope culture within oneself, community and nation, and step by step things will get better. This girl is incredible just like any hard worker and person with true dignity and honour. Wish Africa better, prosperous life without war 💖💖💖

after looking into fashion more since 1 years i really am disapointed by the beauty aspect of high fashion. There a real lack of care for the models, face and hair. They will stick to the clothes theme, sometimes have unique or qurky makeup, but not a single makeup is made to enhence the model looks. It's well know that black model have no one to take care of their hair, but at this point it's stupid and i really don't get why hair and makeup isn't much more part of the runway. Clothes can look much prettier if they have a complimentary hairstyle. there so much to do, the girls are so pretty, it's waist. and i think this also add to the lack of "iconic" model. as always compare to the 90's, the model had signature style and were styled to match the clothes to perfection, even naomi who had to wear wigs all her career had many different looks, from curly to straight to bang to blond and all during the 90's. I wish we had less collection by years but better crafted with a real flare and soul. that take in account the model feature to creat the most cohesive runway, to have a real vibe you know!

    • @astonemmm
      @astonemmm  Рік тому +2

I loved this! I agree to most of this tbh. I DO, however, believe the strength of the model as a household name is on the rise again.
Many agencies set up social media accounts for new faces/models to increase their social presence, because if they can secure enough social media currency along with great work, they can achieve supermodel status.

Can you do a video on the Lineisy Montero FW15 Prada afro-hair runway/campaign/exclusive moment? Although the natural hair movement was already a thing, the Lineisy Prada runway hair moment really started a “trend” in fashion that gave natural hair the jump to crossover into mainstream media. The hair diversity on the runways allowed for a less cookie-cutter casting direction which allowed for greater general diversity (and arguably was the catalyst for Anok’s opening). An overlooked majorly impactful Black Prada moment if you ask me!

We've had quite a few South Sudanese Models in the UK & certainly at London Fashion Week, since the 1980s at least💜💜 - & from Western European designers too, Yves St Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, &;various other UK & French/Italian Designers did si right from the start of the 90s💜💜( & YSL et al did in the 1960s - though there seemed to be a gap with other Designers in the 1970s & part of the 80s, espc in the US, as always) What happens in America is very different though! & always has been, unfortunately but Multicultural is very important here, in the UK in all Our Fashion & Beauty Industries🇬🇧💜 (& even ppl like Naomi Campbell who was already a huge star - got a VERY different reception in the U.S 😔😔the first time she was working a lot over there! - & it was a huge shock for her, at first - even though Iman & others had been huge previously!). Personally I think this lady will be huge; she has serious skills is very intelligent + is extremely beautiful. I wish everybody in the U.S would stop calling her a "Black Supermodel" - she's a Supermodel
Versace loves Anok, & even V Westwood before she died said she thought Anok was "amazing" & stunning" & would be one of the next Supermodels. Anok is just brilliant & I fail to understand why "Colour" is mentioned - in the UK, it just isn't really a thing - & the "Segregation" thing in America, where they insist on saying "Black Creatives" or "Black Owned Businesses" (as if Millions of ppl in the UK & Western Europe AND the U S / Rest of the World DON'T already own many v successful Businesses! It's just absurd - & it's going backwards; No rac**m is ok & definitely NO Segregation should ever "be a thing" (espc not when in the U S that completely insane "Jim Crow" rubbish (not that I understand ANY of that) & ppl having "Seperate seats on buses" or goodness knows what else, is something that older African Americans & their children remember & still talk about; the U S should be removing ANY talk of Segregation; NOT promoting it as if, "Oh - you should get these from a "Black Owned Business" - "bc hey - they need the shout-out!" THEY - Do NOT; & are doing v well for themselves without that kind of silliness; my gosh it is SO patronising & ridiculous; enough already. All any of it is - is that the Closer you get to the Equator; the more melanin that Ancestors would have within their person; & often the tighter their wave pattern too (although I myself hv deep copper red hair & green eyes & my wave pattern is v strong; bc I'm Celtic & Very Northern European!) - but, as a general rule. How can a little / or a lot, or middling amounts of melanin, make a person "different?!" Humans are humans Worldwide & not that different inside, wherever their Ancestors were born, that's the only straightforward fact re any of this silliness you see "Across the Pond" - but ofc, IF the U S had Actual Equality for everybody, (espc in Standard Education/Healthcare/Housing/Everything) as we have had here, by Law, since the 1960s; am sure things would make more sense & be better (not that am saying the UK is perfect, but at leady Standard Education/Healthcare/Everything isn't "different" for anybody "None Caucasian" - how DO the U S Government get away with it, in 2023!🙏💜🇬🇧💜
