The trail arm is one of the hardest things to master in the golf swing. Amateurs struggle with all sorts of mistakes like coming over the top, flipping, and casting. In today's video I'm going to show you a fantastic drill that will help you automatically get your trail arm into the correct position coming down.
It's a drill that tons of tour professionals practice, and if it helps their game, I know it can help yours as well!

▶︎ ABOUT ZACH ALLEN ◀︎
Hi I'm Zach, thank you for visiting my channel. My goal here is to help you play the best golf of your life while having as much fun as possible!
I'm a PGA-certified golf instructor and have been coaching since 1997. I've been named a Golf Digest "Best Young Teacher," a GolfTips Magazine "Top 25 Golf Instructor," and Southern California PGA's Teacher of the Year. I've worked with golfers of all ages and levels, from 4-year-old beginners on up through touring professionals. My students have included nationally-ranked juniors, touring pros, celebrities, and CEOs, but wherever you're at on your golfing journey, my goal is always the same... to help YOU play your best golf!
I started playing competitive golf at a young age, ultimately reaching #3 in the California junior golf rankings - just behind another promising young golfer named Tiger Woods. I also played collegiate golf at the University of Southern California and professional golf on the Omega Asian Tour.
I work with students in-person at my studio in Valencia, CA, and teach golfers all around the world through my UA-cam channel and on my website: ballstrikingblueprint.com. Thanks for stopping by and drop me a comment if you have any questions or would like to get in touch! - Спорт
Best instructor I’ve seen over the years.
What I found helped in controlling my trail arm was creating counter-torque between the hands and arms at address by gripping the club with bent elbows and shaft in the air then lowering it. As the arms straighten the forearm bones counter-rotate creating counter tension between the hands and arms which gives the trail arm the leverage to control the lead arm in the backswing, preventing pronation of the lead hand which swings the club too far inside setting up a host of errors in the downswing.
It is suggested in the PGA Manual of Instruction and by Martin Hall who calls it EDPU - Elbows Down / Palms UP after the orientation of arms and hands when gripping the club in the air. Start with elbows down at sides and palms up, then just rotate both forearms 90° to grip the club. What this does is put the ulna and radius near the middle of their range of rotation at address which results in a very symmetrical and balanced path through impact as the club force turns the hands over.
Is this Bryson DeChambeau? 😂 All kidding aside that is very detail oriented. If you perform better that’s all that matters.
great teaching, wonderfully explained🎉
Awesome teacher! Keep it up!
Thank you! Will try!
Awesome! I didn't know this was a thing, but I frequently practice swinging with just my right arm (I'm a righty, so that is my trail arm).
It’s a very natural way to learn. No technical thoughts required, and everyone who tries it swings the club better.
Great video..explains very well. Thank you
You are welcome!
You are so spot on I wish my 1st coach taught this but it's never too late ! Thanks for being Zach, Zach !
You're so welcome!
just a perfect lesson ! thx
You are welcome!
Great drill..thanks
You bet
thanks will work with it great stuff
Enjoy!
You do a great job of using your Golf Machine knowledge and converting it into easy to understand videos. Love it!
Thanks 👍 it is a complex book to say the least.
Hi Zach great video what should the left arm do or how you correlate the left arm with this drill does the left arm affect the right arm also is probably hard to answer this question but what would you recommend as a swing thought before playing golf i.e. street left arm weight shift hinge etc. thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
Ya training the lead arm is very good also, but the most bang for your buck is definitely the trail arm.
Good training exercise Zack but you don't show ball position. Can you help add this? Take care-Russ
Too true, start the easy way.
👍👍👍
2:08 one arm swing while eating a burrito
I’m going positive. All the visual evidence of all the great players doing it makes it an undeniable lesson all of us should be doing. So that’s really good for a you tube video.
Thanks for that great compliment. I thought the same thing, can’t be a coincidence.
I thought when the pros do the right arm only swing is they're trying to sink up the club with their body for pitching
I think there is more going on then that, but definitely one reason to do it.
So bizarre I used to do this 300+ times a day when I first started out. Never had to practice as much over the years.
That’s awesome, might be worth going back to it.
I do like Zach's teaching a lot, but, loose words like the "magic or secret" move etc, its geometry and physics . That applys to all youtube golf videos,
I do throw those words around. I want people to really believe in what they are practicing. Sometimes it takes some convincing to get people to try something different and uncomfortable. But you are right, there really aren’t any secrets in golf.
What a waste of my time!
Hey atleast it was free.
So it’s a waste of your time but not a waste of those pro players time - hmmm.
