  • Check out three Amiga ports of Irem arcade games: R-Type, Vigilante and Ninja Spirit! For best results view at 1080p 60fps. In this episode of the Good, The Bad, and the Fugly the games covered are in this order:
    The Good: R-Type
    The Bad: Vigilante
    The Fugly: Ninja Spirit
    Prepare your gentle constitutions my retrogaming friends, for you do not comprehend the horrors you are about to witness. I won't be held responsible for any spontaneous human combustion that results from seeing the quality, or lack thereof, in some of these titles! You've been warned!
    UPDATE for clarity: Amiga R-Type supports two buttons, I meant to point out that most players still experienced it with a single button joystick and the keyboard.

    I always really enjoyed Double Dragon II on the A500 growing up. Most of my fun on the Amiga came from all those sick Cinemaware titles like Wings, It Came From The Desert 1 and 2, The 3 Stooges, and Defender of The Crown (of course!). Cyberball was another port that I enjoyed alot with a friend. While not a port, K240 from Gremlim Graphics was the one that really captured my attention. Also, can't forget about the Shadow of the Beast series + all those wild Psygnosis/Reflections original games! Love and appreciate your work, Inglebard 😎👍

    R-Type on the Amiga is actually one of the few games that supports 2 button controllers.

      Yes, I should have been clear on that, I blame my cold/flu addled brain. I meant to say most Amiga games supported one button and even when they supported two, most players still had one button joysticks and used the spacebar for button 2. I'll add a card later to clarify and update the description.

    I appreciate your seriousness when reviewing those arcade ports on the Amiga. Many nostalgic users describe good ports as pixel perfect, but the reality is that there were details, limitations, and gameplay mechanics to consider. Personally, the biggest problem with the Amiga was the single button, games without in-game music, and small screens used to achieve speed.

      Thanks! It was pretty capable hardware that often wasn't really taken advantage of. So many games were rushed, "lazy" ST ports, or suffered from a lack of skill (programming, art, or sound).
      When the computer was at its best it had some great stuff. Turrican II is still one of my all time favs.

    I did say it in a longplay vid but the arcade version of Ninja spirit is, audiovisually, a work of art! Especially if you play it inside a dark room: atmosphere is incredible! Plus the weapon system did inspire us for Powder

      I like it, it has flashes of brilliance, but Irem hurt it by making parts of it way too difficult. I did a complete comparison of thr arcade and PCE versions side by side a couple of weeks ago with commentary if you want to hear my thoughts on it!

    Amiga R type is worth playing purely for Chris Huelsbeck's awesome intro music alone.

      Yup. I did a video on C64 R-Type a while back. Ninja Spirit is pretty good on the platform, too. It IS scaled down considerably, though.

    I remember being blown away by Amiga R-Type when I first saw it, I only had the SMS version, but the Amiga port looked so close to the arcade at that time it was incredible to see at home. Shame there are so many bad arcade ports that plague that system, was a very capable device I have great fondness for. I thought New Zealand Story was quite a nice port at the time. Hope you're on the mend now.

      Amiga R-Type was the first version I played and I liked it a lot. It's one of the better arcade conversions to the platform even though it's not as close as some others. Still, it was well done and was probably the second best western version behind the TurboGrafx-16 release.

    I loved the Amiga back in the day, I had the weird A600. Shadow of the Beast III was probably my favorite game. Going back to it in emulation when WinUAE came around made me realize how crap most of the games were though, especially the ports. They almost always had bad sound. Detuned kick drums for hits and really bad digitized gunshot sounds, it really made me appreciate good FM/Chip sound in games.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  5 місяців тому +1

      There are plusses and minuses with samples vs FM sound. When the Amiga is at its best, in stuff like Turrican II it sounds amazing. A lot of devs used crappy, low quality samples. All depends on who's doing the music.

    • @PlasticCogLiquid
      @PlasticCogLiquid 5 місяців тому

      @ardGamingThe lack of channels hurt too, I think the SNES hit the bare minimum for amount of channels that had to share with SFX. Some of those games had trash sound too though, Raiden used an uptuned snare drum for the shooting sound ffs. Outrun's intro music on the Amiga is hilariously bad

    The Amiga ports of Vigilante and Ninja Spirit would not make arcade owners lose any sleep. Now Amiga R-Type is almost on par with the Sega Master System. Just be sure to use a 2-button controller. Darius Zendeh's BGM arrangement is very good.
    R-Type 2 is also fairly well done on Amiga, though not by Factor 5. It does slow down some though, but not like SNES Super R-Type.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  5 місяців тому +3

      Amiga R-Type.is much better than SMS R-Type, IMO. It's smoother, has way less flicker and much better sound (even than the FM SMS sound).
      Amiga R-Type II is decent, but considerably choppier than the original and yes, was made by different developers. I'll cover it in another video down the line some time!

      Ha, it's not as hated as the Jaguar nor does it deserve to be. It has has thousands of games and probably at least a couple of hundred decent ones. There's a lot of chaff on the platform, but it has way more games in way more genres than the Jaguar.

    Hmmm....I don't think the TG-16 was more powerful than an Atari ST. Yes, it had a higher color pallet and could produce more on-screen colors, but that's about it. I believe the difference we're seeing is due to budget constraints.

    • @InglebardGaming
      @InglebardGaming  5 місяців тому +2

      The PCE is in many ways significantly more powerful than an Atari ST. The PCE has 64 hardware sprites, tha Atari ST has none, PCE has simple hardware scrolling while scrolling on the ST is an intensive mess, the PCE can display over 400 colors on screen (most games are between 40 and 100) while the ST shows 16 colors on screen. As loathe as I am to give PCE sound credit, its better than the PSG-like FM chip in the ST by a lot.
      I get a lot of guff from PCE fans when I compare it unfavorably to the Genesis, which has it beat in everything besides colors, but the PCE is much better overall than the ST.

    • @user-tz4bt5bt6x
      @user-tz4bt5bt6x 4 місяці тому

      The PC Engine and Turbo GrafX 16 were clearly superior to the 16-bit Amiga. The PCE/TG16 versions of these games were really close to Arcade perfect.
      The PCE/TG16 was better at a couple of things than the MegaDrive Genesis as well. The MD/Genesis had hardware Parallax scrolling the MD's biggest advantage.
      The 8-bit CPU in the PCE/TG16 was faster than the SNES and Genesis CPU in some ways but then the PCE/TG16 also had two 16-bit video processors.
      The PCE/TG16 could handle sprites nearly twice the size of the Genesis and more colors. The PCE/TG16 also had better sound and more ram for sound. Just play Street Fighter 2 on both consoles to hear the difference in voice quality.
      The PCE/TG16 could play any card game on the Turbo Express portable as well.

    I have no doubt Factor 5 would have done an even better job if under different circumstances. In facts, don't think they had a great deal of time to rework Katakis into R-Type (Trenz had six weeks on the C64, for reference..). Vigilante is atrocious: the less said, the better. Ninja spirit, well I'm not really able to adjust to the controls. I mean, the C64 port manages to do a better job with the single button joystick, of course up is used for jump and the space bar switches weapons but at least you don't need to always press fire and a direction.
