3:53 Legolas takes out 30 orcs at once
Gimli: That only counts as one
Daniel Corral yet, he can’t take down the one guy
@@shehzadmoosa3028 it's funny that that one orc is the only one that has a realistic reaction to getting shot by an arrow, all others instantly die for no reason.
@@nautilusstopmotion8304 did you see where those two arrow hit though? The location angle and depth of those shot would, in the very least, drop even that or to its feet for a moment. Those things pierced lungs, veins and the second shot looked to be aimed downward right at the heart.
Chad Dionne and? mortal wounds don't kill instantly, you can easily survive 30 seconds without breathing

E-x-actly !
Man I can't stop laughing xD
I loved gimli into the movies, always a bit grumpy, as pure dwarf, but a big heart.
10 years I have been watching this at least once a years and it is the first time I noticed it
I love how the defenders fly into a collective rage when they notice Theoden is injured and immediatly start pushing back with renewed fervor once he's safetly behind them.
Well he was a real leader who was fighting on the frontline. The men will respect that and fight for that leader. Not for some coward who hides in the back
@@fujimi715 definitely I'd never put myself in harm's way for a coward who wouldnt stand with me or get infront of me if I was down
my too
No greater love than who lays down his or her life for his or her friends
That's usually the reaction you'll get when you respect and love your leader, especially when he's on the front lines taking hits like everyone else. I always found that scene to be important and special too.
Haldir needed a full minute for his thousands of years of life to flash before his eyes
xD
Well it’s always a win win for the elves even if they die they still get to go to Valinor so rest assure knowing all these “dead” elves are fine chilling in Valinor the reason why I said “dead” with quotation is that for elves even if you lose your physical form you still don’t die for the elves as long as your spirit lives your are alive
@@MrHistory269 Oh no my friend! Elves are meant to await in the halls of Mandos whenever they fall in battle or by any other means and await Dagor Dagorath the battles of battles at the end of time. Only men have the privilege of being reunited with Eru upon death!
Quite profound, if you ask me.
@@Aregon972 Eventhough the Elves "die" and await in the Halls of Mandos it's not eternal or until the Final Battle. They await in the Halls until their souls are cleansed then they'll be reincarnated with a physical form in Valinor. That's why unrepentant Elves like Feanor will reside with Mandos for eternity
I love it how gimli needed to be pulled away by two people in order for him to stop fighting
However it only takes Aragon one hand to pull him away xddd
I think he just doesn't like it when an elf tells him to stop.
TheDestroyer 789 I was looking for this comment so I don’t have to write it lol. Love that little guy
i know guys who'll need a whole platoon
@Anonymous5253 yes and no it was gimli but in that scene they used a child to better showcase his small size compared to normal height
I've never noticed this before, but in embracing Haldir at the very end Aragorn did him such a great service. The stars are of great significance to the elves. Being the first of the races to awaken, when they awoke there was no sun or moon, the two trees had not yet been planted, and (I believe) the lamps had been destroyed. The only form of light at the time of the elves awakening was the stars. As a result the stars hold an almost religious significance for them. Haldir is about to fall forward here, as Aragorn embraces him he falls back, allowing his last sight to be the stars overhead.
That is lovely, thank you for the analysis. I really hope this was purposefully done in the film 🙏👏
Hopefully the rain had ended long enough for the clouds to clear.

@@bungiecoocooyou just ruined his theory like that 😂
I love how this battle, by this time, just made you feel exhausted. Not because of how long it was, but because of the emotional impact of it. The opening volleys, the breach of the wall, the defenders desperately trying to hold on. You really felt it all
It's just brilliant filmmaking!
Its insane that this was 2002
Jonny jonny
I know right?
Jonny Stannard ш
Movies were honestly so much better then.
It's so beautifully well done.. looks 2019ish
Man from a tactical standpoint , this battle is amazingly played by both sides.
The Castle desing was quite awfull. But its true
@@jarabeparatos 300 humans and idk elves against 10,000? And lasted more than a night? In the rain as well?
They did amazing
@@kristiankepley5944 He's talking about the design of the fortress itself, which is true. They do a good job holding it, but it is a very poorly designed fortress (at least as depicted in the movie). The perfect example comes at 5:05 when the defenders retreat and the gate is finally breached. As they retreat into the keep, you can clearly see there is absolutely nothing preventing the Uruk Hai from getting inside as well. They just have to run up a ramp and that's it. You can see the issue with this at 5:25 where a decent number of the defenders are cut off from entering the keep by the Uruk Hai, and presumably slaughtered because of it. In reality, there should have been another gate preventing the Uruk Hai from just walking into the keep. Of course it's a fantasy movie, and one of the best ever made, but the design of the fort was pretty bad.
Yea but the archers on the walls waited too long to start firing
@@DariusOfPersia it's a cool design, but it clearly can be improved: a moat on front of the wall and a drawbridge at the gate, to begin with. plus they should have sealed the gate from the inside with big pile of rocks and earth.
but then, it wouldn't be very cinematic if the Uruks spent the whole night trying to fill a moat in order to get to the wall while being shot at, and not being able to reach the gate because there's a huge gap in front of it. I guess they could have used the giant ladders anyway but only with that...by the time Gandalf arrived, all the Uruks would have been dead, covered in arrows. nice way to win in RTW, not very cinematic for movies.
That shot at 3:40 of the ladders going up with hundreds of orcs hanging off of them is outstanding.
Uruk hai, not orcs lol
@@ALUCARD-us3il Uruk-hai are orcs, just a particularly tough breed of such (in fact, Uruk-hai literally just means “orc folk” in Black Speech). Another FYI: according to Tolkien himself, the word orc is basically just an Elvish loanword that literally means “goblin”; Tolkien doesn’t make the same kind of distinctions between orcs and goblins that you see in subsequent fantasy franchises.
Gimli: That still only counts as one!
Take a minute to try and figure out the physics of the ladders being raised and the ropes that seems to decrease in length
hundreds? you can't count lmao, do you know how much 100 are? that's rather like 20, or 30.
Legolas: “Final count, 42.”
Gimli: “43.”
Aragorn: *Hundreds, and is still angrily murdering Uruk-hai in the distance*

I love that scene. It shows what Legolas said earlier, and perfectly portrayes how outclassed Rohans "army" was without having the edge of beeing inside of Helms Deep.
Just look how one sided it is, and how overpowered this child was. Just imagine beeing like what 16 years, pulled into army and then such a tank of a monstrous beast is handling you in a "younger brother thinks he can challenge his older brother" style.
Well hey might as well die like a man instead of running away like a bitch lmao however realistically I’d probably run away…. I’m 5’5 135 pounds definitely no chance against a 6’4 raging Uruk thirsty for man blood hell I’m already dreading the mere thought of an Uruk hai saying

I ADORE the Isengard Army;
Not only looking professional, but acting so (muc more then Mordor at least xD).
-Suppressing the Elves on the walls with crossbows
- Pikewall against the charge
- The Berserkers set on the ladders
- Using the turtle formation
- Using the Crossbows immediatly on the gate breach.
If Saruman had the means of Morder, Minas Tirith woud have been a lot more one sided...
If saruman couldve mass produced the Uruk hai like sauron produced the orcs, he could've defeated sauron and siezed power himself
@@dale27488 definitely. The Uruks are, in my opinion, superior to most, if not all, Orc species in Morder. Except the bigger ones of course.
I agree, if Saruman had amassed to 200,000 plus as Sauron had, he would've been able to rule middle earth himself. The Uruks were vastly superior to orcs in not only physical ability but in tactics as mentioned.
Son of the Black Rage Well I think Mordor were more counting on their numbers to win the war. I imagine if it had been 10.000 Mordor orcs (No Nazguls, No Trolls or anything, just normal Mordor orcs), the battle would probably have been easier for Rohan, and they may not have needed Gandalfs help at all.
@@darthbricksempire3606 For sure, they would've handled regular orcs rather easily. They wouldn't have had the siege equipment the Uruks had either.
Legolas shoots the rope lifting the ladder and easily kills 50+ and you hear gimli that still only counts as one. I was cracking up 😂
Ikr lmaoooo😂😂 Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie
Holy crap, I never noticed that! Took me 20yrs 😂😂😂😂
@@TheBuri00 He actually said that when Legolas kill mumakil in 3rd part, this is just editet video with Gimlis audio placed in that particular moment, but I was laughing also. Uploader edited this nicely 😂
Gimli reminds me of my grandfather LOL
Wasn't in the OG movie, this guy just edited it in. If you listen closely he edits a lot of sound effects into these videos.
After 19 years, still no movies are better than this.
If you guys look closely from 5:18 to 5:26 , you can see Arwen being the first one going up the stairs retreating.
She was originally suppose to fight in the battle for Helm's Deep but was later cut , yet you can still see her here.
I just realized all those soldiers/archers on top of the tower died since they got flanked with orcs blocking the way to the keep.
I don’t see her
"What can man do against such reckless hate?"
You can not send your men outside castle walls and have a suicide cavalry charge for starters.
You did well Theoden! You did well!
I mean, to be fair, it was life or death either way. This way, they would go down like warriors that they are.
Dani G. Barreto at that point, they could all tell they were doomed anyway. They might as well go out on their own terns, as was the way of their people.
@@sabretoothstudios9142 also Aragorn & Gimli knew Gandalf was due to return with the Rohirrim
They were only trying to buy some more time for the cavalry to arrive. 😉
It actually makes sense and is quite historical in fact. This is what's called a "sally forth" in which defenders of a sieged fortification/city would 'sally out' of the defenses and charge in the hopes of disrupting the attack and sometimes break the siege. It happened many times throughout history and in some of them, the enemy was caught off guard and completely repelled.
"A sally, ultimately derived from Latin salīre (to jump), or "salle" sortie, is a military maneuver, typically during a siege, made by a defending force to harass isolated or vulnerable attackers before retreating to their defenses. Sallies are a common way for besieged forces to reduce the strength and preparedness of a besieging army; a sally port is therefore essentially a door in a castle or city wall, that allows troops to make sallies without compromising the defensive strength of fortifications.[1]" From Wikipedia.
this is what GOT wish it could be.
Грецов Алексей you are so wrong on that
@@MasterChief806 That's millions of dollars just for one episode. Even with that money, they were able to achieve amazing visuals that could easily beat any visuals Peter and his crew had back in the day when they made LotR. Yet for some reason, that's the best they can come up with?
StringStorm but actually the visuals are amazing in S8. The writing is the only problem
@@MasterChief806 if they compare themselfs with it we can too
Red Raider well if it’s 20 mill an episode, and that fight was the majority of that episode, they should have had no problem getting it to at least this quality, considering this is only a 20 min fight and is pretty old
It was always insane to me how Jackson manages to keep the tension. Cause every few minutes there’s a scene where it appears the battle might be turning. Yet they’re all immediately followed by scenes that show that the battle is far from over and up the tension by showing the orcs maintaining the upper hand.
Peter Jackson's truly awesome at his craft.
5:30 Gimli kills Aragorn 😂
When Legolas started using his long knives, instead of his signature bow, n arrow. You know the battle was getting more serious for them.
Ah UA-cam recommending me lotr battles after watching Got to remind what good writing looks like.
@sugarc0ated1 na, GOT's problems weren't the acting or cinematography. the writers are birdbrains, they are to blame.
Yeah because the heroes totally didn't have plot armor in this battle...
@@armoda1057 you know that they had 3 months to write the script for season 7 and 8 while Martin just said the the outlines and he left the to figure out how to solve one of the most complex storyline ever created while he has 11 years to finish one book and he still has finished it
@@justinespada4930 apart from plot armor, there were a shitload of things wrong with the battle of Winterfell. Stop defending trash.
Same
I love how there are hundreds of orcs in front of the gate and Gimli is just "We can take them!"
The Uruk-Hai were horribly outmatched ;)
Gimli wanted to make sure he got more kills than Legolas 🤣🤣🤣
At about 5:22, you can clearly see at least an elf, if not a few, who survived the entire battle. In the script, PJ has “all remaining elves and men” retreat to the glittering caves, leaving the Rohan Royal Guard there to ride out and eventually meet the Uruk Hai. Even before this, you see elves providing cover for retreating forces, but that’s beside the point - and before the specific scene I’m talking about. I’ve seen a few other posts discussing the last remaining elves. The best consensus is that the few survivors marched back to Lorien to take part in the Siege of Lothlorien...Must’ve been a shit journey home for the few remaining elves, who after losing much of their kin in this battle, undoubtedly had to also take part in facing an invasion of their homeland of Lothlorien soon upon their return from the battle at Helm’s Deep.
Yes, I obviously know this is separate from the book where only Legolas actually was there, but I’m just strictly going by the movie in this particular case.
Unfortunately the Weapons and Warfare book states that all the Elves died fighting to the last man. :(
The elf at the front that runs up the stairs first when the gate is breeched is Arwen. They had her at the battle then edited out but not all of her. If you look carefully when they charge out she's there too, and when they're going down the causeway she's next to Aragon on the right but they changed the colour of her hair. You can also see her just after the reinforcements clash with isen. In background dressed in red with black hair.

Gimli's courage is LEGENDARY in this battle. Furius to fight on and enraged by the order to retreat to the keep, 2 elves had to pull him out of the fight.

*Bard shoots Smaug with his black arrow*
5 year old Gimli: "That only counts as one!"

No one is going to reply that he was already in his 60s? I will... He prob wasn't chosen to go on the quest for the Lonely Mountain because in dwarven years he was too young, Fili and Kili just got in being 75 odd, Thorin being the oldest at 195 years. this battle was one of the best moments in cinema even to this day. a literal legendary piece of art.
Only now as an adult do I recognize how impressive the shot at 5:03 is.
tropicthunder131 I dont know if its all practical or not from the beginning of the shot till the end, but seeing how they retreat and fight at the same time while rest keep trying to fend them off and how camera follows the action perfectly. Legolas still shootin, mad man...
I'm pretty sure it switches from CGI to mostly practical effects after the causeway and the deeping wall fall out of view. It's incredible that A: the CGI blends so well with the practical effects, and B: that it still looks better than CGI battles that came out last year despite being close to 20 years old.
Agreed - amazing shot!
As a kid in 2000s I thought that scene was amazing but I didn't know why
It is, kind of look like a 4d or some type of futuristic VR movie experience.
That clash at 4:54, when that brave boy just charges a uruk-hai with the axe...my god that possibly is one of the most powerfull scenes of the battle, that is concentrated on one-on-one fight !
Kinda felt sorry for that pheasant conscript tho.
Still pretty ballsy tho
Boy got served up like pecan pie by that Uruk😂
It is comforting to hear that even elves who were killed in battles will reach the undying lands
One of my favorite parts is gimil saying to toss him then adding just before he does "don't tell the elf" I loved the dynamic between legolas and him trying to compete by counting their number of enemies they kill here and during the battle for Minas Tirith
4:55 When level 1 fighter tries taking on level 100 warlord.
I was chewing gum while reading the comments. Your joke nearly killed me 😂
Mekiel S. He died a good man.

The guy gets a massive A for effort though. If the battle was against orcs here he would have cleaved its skull in two!

King Theoden, right in the mix, getting stabbed and hacking off arms and shit. Finally, a leader I can get behind.
Draw swords!
Theoden gets stabbed and calls for Gambling to let him retreat.
"Don't tell the elf! -Not a word."
Priorities are important.
At a scene here 1:52, when I first watched this movie, and till this day there can be no character that can beat Aragorn's character, he's such a good leader by letting his men run first, and we can clearly see him running last. Love Aragorn so much, If I was a common foot soldier in Middle Earth, I'd ride into battle any day if Aragorn is leading.
That’s exactly right……and was very carefully planned to show that. Masterful direction and choreography. Btw, that’s me from 1:51 to 2:01 as Aragorn (body double for 18mths)………all night shoot, under 10sec on screen! 😬
17 years ago, yet 17x better than GoT
Ikr especially with all the plot armor on the heroes in this battle right?
@@justinespada4930 why are you fucking commenting the same thing everywhere? GoT and LotR had different themes, in GoT the main characters were always getting killed off so it was bullshit that they survived against impossible odds in Winterfell battle. I always thought how brutal that was and how terrifying it would be to be conscripted to fight these beasts for survival
That head wobbling is severe brain trauma ...not very funny when you think of it that way
Best. Damn. Movie. Trilogy
In this battle you can really tell Aragorn is of Numénorien descent - throwing Gimli fully armored, the ladder plunge, one arm hold of that rope with the dwarf on the other are all feats of strengh beyond any man I'd say.
Maybe peak human
Half Elf half men, Legolas easily pulling them both
Hama, Rest in Peace.
Haldir, Rest in Peace.
All Fallen Rohirrim, Rest in Peace.
All Fallen Elves, Rest in Peace.
Boromir, Rest in Peace
The CGI is better then many films these days
The added “that only counts as one!” 😂
Absolutely love this whole thing. Arguably the greatest battle sequence on film.
Gotta respect Aragorn being the last man up the stairs, shows a tried and true commander.
The Battle of Balls Deep.
Japan
The death of haldir is so sad, especially if you have read the books, it's a character way more develloped in the books but his treatment on jackson's saga is still awesome !
Oh by the way, everyone knows that Lotr is better than GoT
Definitely better than the last season of GoT. But let’s not totally discount the first six seasons of GoT. I’ll always at least treasure the first six seasons. The seventh season is where it started its downward spiral.
Haldir and Boromir are underrated.
@Merciless Freak
Both of them didn't have much screentime.
LotR is best movie ever of course its better than some shit show
Aragorn and Gimli synchronization on a rotative fight posture is a delight to see.
I know this is old af but are we not gonna talk about the Uruk sapper checking the equipment by smacking the shit out of it to make sure it’s good at 3:24 lmfaoo
Sees 1273658382891+ Uruk-hai trying to break through the gate at 2:50 and Gimli’s first thought is “we can take them!” 😂
5:16 Uncut Arwen Footage
Look at the top right of the shot. You'll see someone in a black and red dress with a quiver on her back looking around before making her way up the stairs. Aragorn follows closely behind and blocks an Uruk's swing that looks like he was aiming for her. She ends up being the first person to go all the way up the stairs and out of the shot.
There are other shots in the daytime scene where you can barely see her red dress on her white horse behind Theoden's as they ride out of the keep, but it always cuts before showing her face. And, of course, there's the brief shot of her fighting on horseback where Eomer rides into the shot.
Man, I really wish we got to see the original cut where Arwen kicks ass before Peter Jackson edited her out.
Peter Jackson you are the MAN!! this was spectacular!!
The "Gimli Killing Aragorn Edit" at the end had me in stitches for ages. Well done.
4:59 That punch though. Lol!
Uruk served that boy up like Cherry pie😂
@@JerkWeed79 More like one hell of a knuckle sandwich.👊💥
One of the best movies ever made. My how far Hollywood has fallen. Such a shame a quality film like this is few and far between in these dark times
Never gets tired of watching this epic scene ❤️
You and me both!
I just laugh that after Legolas knock off a ladder full of Uruk-hai, Gimili yelled "That only counts as one!" is hilarious
As a kid watching this trilogy for the first time, Boromir's and Haldir's deaths rocked me. They still do.
Both are underrated
Yeah kinda sad that Haldir dies in the battle
Anyone else love the moment Theoden leans out of the gate, and punches an Uruk in the face. Little details like that in the background make these battles feel real.
I love Gimli. “Oh, come on, we can take ‘em.”
Yeah, I always thought it so sad, and I know they were having their hands full too but still, that the dwarves weren’t in these big battles for Middle-earth that we see in the movie. I feel that a proper dwarven army would just smash through the orcish ranks and had a lot of fun doing that as well. :)
@@shadowsteed15
I wish the dwarves with Gimli during the Council of Elrond joined in too
5:03 damn that shot is incredible.
still better than GoT...
I thought the battle against Night King will beat this, but it seems no.....
To be fair, nothing is better than The Lord of the Rings
Lord of the Rings should have been a series like GOT.Because there are a lot of great things from the books which are missing in the movies.
@@Jim-fi4dc They are making a series. We will see what would be better.
LOTR is a movie GOT is a tv show. Of course LOTR is better but comparing them is not fair.
" DON'T TELL THE ELF " IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Aragorn is such a bro when he still rushed to Haldir when he succumbed to his final moments..
Btw.. I like the part at the end you can see Legolas still shooting arrows while retreating! Kinda awesome dedication from Orlando Bloom..
Aragorn is the most baddass character in any movie in my opinion
legolas is my favorite
I love that the elves have to drag Gimli away from the fight. He's pretty much saying "Pointy-eared knaves! There are still orc-necks to hew!"
"just drop me, don't say anything to the elf" 2:57 It's verry funny Gimli 😂💪❤
That freaking ending😂
Omg dude that's the one of the funniest s#it ever
🤣
3:43 Did anyone else think to themselves 'Wow they carried those gigantic ladders with them all the way from Isengard?'
He thought it was insane that the movie was in 2002,well.four years later and two years after Covid THE LORD OF THE RINGS Is still FIRE 🔥🔥🔥
