Ran the 200 for a few months, and have now picked up the 240. I have come to the conclusion that this is pretty close to my perfect tool down here in Florida. Little to no need for an axe(have a saw), but plenty of need for a long blade, with good reach, for dealing with vines / saw palmettos etc, and processing and any size wood my gomboy is capable of taking. A proper machete is solid too, but it is so much more limited / focused in its ability. Though it is extremely rare that i chop anything larger than a couple inches dia, unless im looking for a workout. Love the steel. Love the grind. Love the grip. Excellent product. Keep it oiled.
Ordered some stuff from Varusteleka and one of these bad boys was sent to me by mistake. The moment i held it in my hand i knew we were meant to be. It's my favourite tool in this life and the next. I will demand in my will to be buried with it. Chopping off thick branches with one strike never gets old.
Several years ago I received a Skarma 240 (the large one) from a fellow after I and a few others honestly tested one for him that we passed tester to tester. He was planning on being a U.S. distributor for them. It ain't pretty, but dayum that thing is amazing. I did everything from chopping, batoning, and choking up and using the short finer edge to do some fine work. The dangler makes it pretty easy to belt carry for such a large blade. I could just use it and something like a Mora or some other basic camp knife and be set well. I'd probably add a folding saw for a full kit. It kind of makes all my other big knives to include my Randall Model 14 a moot point. The nice thing is, it's already the not-pretty sister, so you can keep the pretty blades pretty and work this one hard. The Skramas are made by people who have a history of actually working with blades as daily work tools. It shows.
I absolutlely love my Skrama and was lucky enough to purchase it with the black leather sheath as a package. I also have the MOLLE sheath strapped to my pack as an additional carry option, or an excuse to get a second one lol. Trust me when I say with time and practice you'll be accustomed to the knife and it will get easier to use in all sorts of tasks, it's fantastic for making "camp coleslaw" hehe your honesty, enthusiasm, and just dosh garnned down-to-Earthiness is one of the reasons i believe yours is one of the best channels on youtube my good Sir. thank you.
I got the Skrama for this past Christmas and I love it! I really want the 110 Terava puukko to compliment it. Definitely one of the best out there for the money. Good job reviewing the Skrama Brian! Thanks!
Yes, to personally reenforce the previous findings, on this 4th day of January, 2023. Varusteleka's Skrama is by far the most durable, most versatile, and most capable "Survival" cutting tool on the international market for the price. Mated with an axe, saw, smaller knife, and awl, this combo and your knowledge could easily survive the toughest challenges. Even alone, this tool will increase anyone's chances of surviving an unexpected twist of bad luck. I give it five stars; and I rarely ever do that for most pieces of equipment. Happy New Year Everyone! Be Safe out there.....
Brother, I absolutely love your channel, and I watch it all the time, but as an archaeologist... I have to finally tell you my friend, the imperial system that we use is older than the metric system. Love the blade. Looks like a real workhorse. Thanks for the review brother. Take care.
It's a beast! Varusteleka has some great stuff, I've bought a few products from them. ATB Bryan enjoy your weekend. Hopefully we'll see more reviews from you with Varusteleka products
Great Review and I recommend that You order the leather sheath and also leather with the other knives this Great Company has to offer . I ordered four other knives from them but I should have done one order and saved a lot on postage , Enjoy all Your knives Guy`s .
I had to slow it up to .25 speed and replay that step-over the log. YOU *SCARED ME* you know better, but you were having so much fun. Like a kid with a new dirt bike *FULL THROTTLE* on a fresh graveled curve. #whenknivesexcite
I just bought one , I was looking at the cold steel bolo, but chose this one, because of the overall design. And the steel . I'm glad varusteleka is paypal friendly . I made the right call on this one , good close up video, display of the knife in action.
i have the Skrama and both the 110 in carbon and the 140 in stainless all with the leather sheaths these are easily the best bang for the buck knives you can buy ! the Skrama is my go to around the house yard working tool ,, for clearing brush or whatever plus i get to look like a BARBARIAN using it in my cargo shorts and Acapulco shirt !!!!!
Hi Bryan After i saw your revue about the Skrama, i, was really blown away and i knew: "I have to have one of these!!!" So i ordered one the same day (here in Switzerland it' was in the middle of the night) you showed your revue on your channel. Today, on the 07-03-2018 i finaly received my stainless steel version of the Skrama. It is a little more expensive then the carbon steel one, but it's worth every cent i payed for it. The knive looks great, it lies good in my hand and with the leather sheath it's also fun to carry it on the belt. I want to thank you for the great work you are doing on your channel. I'm a big fan of you an your channel. Keep on doing your thing, i like it 😃👍🏻 Best regards from Switzerland (do not mix up with Sweden 😉), this is where Roger Federer comes from. 😄 Daniel
I have this knife and both the 110 and 140 Puukko knives. I love them all. I also bought the Woodsknife Traditional Puukko 105 from them with the curly maple handle. Beautiful small hand made fixed blade with a leather sheath for $48 + $10 shipping!
Its 80crv2 steel. Its my favorite budget steel because most knives here in finland is made from that, and by the same company Laurin metalli. I think this blade also is made by Lauri, and their heat treatment of that steel is on point
I’ve liked that knife since the first time I saw it. If there is a one knife option, I think that would be one of the knives. I think the price for it is very reasonable. Excellent knife calibration. 👏👏👏👍👍👍🔪🔪🔪
It, s not knive. Its skrama. Developed from hukari www.taiter.fi/hukari.html Almost same tool is vesuri. www.fiskars.com/fi-fi/puutarhanhoito/tuotteet/kirveet-metsatyokalut/woodxpert-vesuri-xa3-1003609
Im Always Impressed with your knife throwing skills, Brian! This session is No disappointment in that department: On that last throw, you tossed & spun the knife up for one vertical revolution, caught it by the handle, then with but one moment, turned toward the target, and launched that Chopper Beast: Perfectly Right On the Center of the Target on that Tree. Wow. That's a Knife that isn't designed for Throwing, per se, yet is Balanced Right at the Handle/Blade Axis, and You capitalized on the physics of it, and threw for Gold. (If there were Medals for Throwing, You Won the Gold, that is 🙂) Thanks Again for a Great Review of what appears to be a Great Knife, from our Friends in Finland 🔪
For the 192 countries that do use metric the specs are as follows, 430mm overall length, blade 240mm long, blade width 46mm and thickness 4.2mm. Weight 525 grams.
The hole is for fine tasks which you can do with tip. Skinning for example. You put the loop through the ring at the end of Tang. This loop put on your arm over elbow, than middle finger and thumb use to hold this hole. Index finger goes to spine. And you have huge skinner.
Now this is a review about a great big blade for regular folks. I don't own the Skrama myself but I do have the Puukko 140 mm (metric rules! :)) and that's a great knife too. When I need an even smaller knife I often take my Enzo and that's also Finish. For some reason the Fins know how to make knives. What really amazes me is that they ship it to the USA for 10 usd. We pay 10 euro for shipping to The Netherlands. I think they can send it so cheap because they don't have to pay the 21% tax on the blade when selling to the USA. I think they use that to pay for shipping, because I can't ship a fart to the USA for 10 usd. Anyway. Take advantage you people in the USA! I think 105 usd for the knife and the good quality leather sheath with plastic insert shipped to your door is a good deal. Cheaper than any ESEE this size I guess. Some regular folks will still have to save up for it but they are getting great value for the money.
Great video Brian. That scared the crap out of me when you fell though. Geat looking knife/chopper for sure. They really make great knives. I really enjoy your channel.Take care of yourself,I want to keep watching for a long time to come. ATB.
That thing would probably make great feathers if you stabbed the top into the log and made the blade stationary. Then you are able to make a pull cut by pulling the wood towards you against the blade. This is the method used with my axe to make feathersticks when camping.
You pronouced that pretty well. Varusteleka is my go to when I am out and about. It functions as both a knife and an axe. My son loves it. We're swedish btw ! It is as we say just Perkele good! It comes with the first two inches of the blade as a knife and the rest as an axe. Surprised they didnt tell you that..
Once upon a time, that may have been the case, Hunter. Apparently not so much, these days www.bladeforums.com/threads/whats-the-purpose-of-a-hole-in-the-blade.1309829/
Both Finnish and Scandinavians never cease to amaze me with the quality and variety of their working knives, and often at very reasonable prices. Maybe the Finns are even slightly better with their knives that the neighbouring Scandinavians, being less expensive and still traditional. Or used to be. Great Marttiini Pukka knives for 10 dollars once. I like this heavy model very much.
Great video sir, I love the fact that you truly get excited and aren't all fake. I thought you were going to impale yourself when you fell! Awesome knife...... maybe a recommendation from you to BattleBox to put this in one of their knife of the month boxes!!!!! Thanks for sharing, and God bless Glad you endeavored to persevere.......I reckon so
Great knife Bryan! Thanks for the video. You might take it easy pushing on logs trying to break them. Even if it looks like it’s about to break. Don’t push or you will fall when it breaks. Be safe.
I have every Terävä knife Varusteleka sells. Love them all and have a couple review videos on the Skrama and Jääkäripuukko,. This Skrama is a total beast yet can do fine work. Enjoyed the video.
I did get a Jaakaripuukko 140mm stainless steel just like the carbon steel knife I have now. The reason is I always thought that the puukko could be an excellent fishing and hunting knife, so I wanted the stainless version.
Reminds me of a Shao-lin jie-dao, the blunt-point knife carried by the monks to clear brush and use in self defense. The blunt tip was to remind them to abstain from violence. There was a ring at the end of the pommel, also. As a lifelong kung-fu guy, I gotta get me one! Thanks, Bryan!.
Sean M sort of, it is really a "hukari" Finnish soldiers used to make them from battlefield finds, like broken swords and dusacks , use them in battles, close up, then take them home and use them on the farm.
Bought mine in 2013 before they offered a sheath and before the knife had the double grind (which I can tell you it doesn't really even need), a sort of 1st generation model. It's by far the best chopper I have come across, and if I ever buy another model, this is the knife it will have to outperform. If I absolutely had to whine about something, it's that it has slight binding issues and that it isn't the best at splitting wood.
Finally! Great, isn’t it?! I ordered my own (will arrive WITH sheath) - I am waiting for post from Helsinki any day. My experience with the 140 mm knife is superb. Thanks Brian, it was about time for Varusteleka testing. - Be assured: Being European with some language experience: Still no idea of how to pronounce these knife names ;-) :-)
ÄäÖöÜü and ß are inventions of evil Germans (I’m German) that are meant to torture the whole world outside Europe. We successfully infected our friends in Helsinki, but honestly, they are overdoing it a little bit..... :-). Terävä Jääkäripuukko. 5 times “ä” in two short words, that’s intentional EVIL that may cause severe problem for anyone’s vocal cords. - Sorry Bryan for misspelling your name, it’s right now, isn’t it? - You answered twice already to my silly posts, I’m honoured, don’t spoil me too much.
I doubt that I would have had the stamina to get through that bigger log. But it was still kind of funny to watch you try to talk when you were so winded. LOL Good job!
I'd hate to get hit with that an or the sxb skullcrusher, the amount of force behind those two would be devastating, this is a great tool Brian, I'm getting one to go with my puukko 140.
Very cool. Looks like a modern version if a broken back seaxe. I think I will need to order one and then make my own seaxe style sheath. I love my seaxe, but sometimes it's just too pretty to take to the desert. This one ain't pretty, but sure looks useful. Darnit Brian. I figure you just cost me about two hundred bucks. Gotta have that 140 mm puukko knife as well!
The hole at the end of the blade is just for hanging it from a nail on the wall of your shed, as it traditionally was used as just one of those tools you had.
4 роки тому+2
Varusteleka explains this on their site: The hole is needed in the manufacturing process (e.g. tempering). As a result you get a hole that you can use for hanging it from the nail :)
"Endeavor to persevere" I smell a Josie Whales fan, that is one of my favorite western movies. Also the knife looks amazing, I haven't gotten one yet but I certainly will
I think there secret is the heat treat they know something the others do not . Happy trails you were correct I waited and you delivered . And I'm a bowie guy but just love there 2 blades beyond description but we will al l know more about these 2 blades come December by then they will have both been through the works and we will no for sure but as for now there both winners . happy trails.
I'm North Western European and I wouldn't start trying to pronounce Finnish words, it's a whole seperate language group. You're a braver man than I am 😂
There is nothing my Skrama can't do I just got an Ontario SP53 bolo and it has more weight but the wife claimed that she has named it Mr. So the Skrama is mine I guess . Happy Trails .
Brian, good video. You really scared me when you took a tumble. All that huffing and puffing says you need some good cardio like me. That’s a serious chunk of blade my friend. Looks well made. Please be careful in the future. J
A second time watching this video (and others about the Skrama) because it kept being on my mind and I just ordered. All videos I see are very positive about this blade but you actually can't stop smiling using it. It does seem like you are really impressed. Shipping to The Netherlands even became cheaper and is only 5,50 dollar now and it usually arrives the next day after shipping although they don't promise that. They must have some very fast runners in Finland because I have the same experience with Brisa.fi, also a very good company in Finland and Finland is not close by to where I live. The use will be for woodland. For jungle I will still take the lightweight Tramontina machete. Did you know your military uses metric? When on land I mean. I also like it that you kept the fall in your video. I suggest (and I train myself) to drop the knife as soon as it happens, so it's not still in your hand pointing in the wrong direction. But this goes against nature because natural reflex is to hold on.
cool:) looks like a good onion chopper:) and other shores in kitchen :) dog wood is like little flowers here in Alaska :) I have them in my yard:) like this knife
Geez Bryan take it easy with such a big knife. Great job on the demo and review but we almost lost you there. Then what would we all do on Saturday mornings?
It's hot it's humid it's been raining it's a very damp atmosphere that mosquitoes love damp weather atmosphere so you did a real good job sparking for a fire . Exhausting environment if you're not used to it , most mammals never get used to this heated humidity . Please take care Brian outside 100 + weather with humidity is very dangerous
Opposite the metric system is more modern than the royal one. It was introduced by the Napoleon to confuse the Brits together wth right side road driving system ;-) SKRAMA is best though. I wish it was even longer a bit - total length of abt. 66 .. cm :-) Greetings from Poland.
They are really great knives. Like to have one, but like said before hard to get. Guess I' ll just have to get on the list. It reminds me of a sax knife. Bryan be careful! !!!! Don't fall! !!!😉
I could not agree more ... I'd much prefer a normal 4" blade bushcraft knife with laplander saw combo... You can do almost anything with those ... Processing up to 6 inch fire wood down to carving a spoon. I think these kinda knifes in uk also draw attention to you as a bit of a knife nut and are more likely to get negative police attention
Your revolution was against the country from which your measurment system comes. Britain certainly was not metrin in 1776. Jeffereson and Franklin did want switch to metric. They accomplished this with money denomination. However, metric system is actually in heavy used in the States! In the vast world of American medical and scientific research, engineering, even in the military for many purposes at some levels. Your popular system is English, though, not directly American, though there are a few modifications of the Imperial system. Many American kids can do basic math better in metric than English. You see proportions just in the numbers. But to each his own. Brits use both their own and metric. That works too.
israelpiper All US kids became familiar with metric 50 years ago when pot became popular. We like our temperature scale better because it is less coarse.
I have had one for a couple of years now.....love it!!! They used to also have a molle sheath which I much preferred!
I like the leather

I did get a Jaakaripuukko 140mm stainless steel just like the carbon steel knife I have now. The reason is I always thought that the puukko could be an excellent fishing and hunting knife, so I wanted the stainless version.
Good point
Reminds me of a Shao-lin jie-dao, the blunt-point knife carried by the monks to clear brush and use in self defense. The blunt tip was to remind them to abstain from violence. There was a ring at the end of the pommel, also.
As a lifelong kung-fu guy, I gotta get me one!
Thanks, Bryan!.
Grasshopper ;-)
It's a Seax. Scandinavian blade design going waaaay back.
This a good blade for sure.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Is this the 200 or 240??? I just sent out for bare tang 200 to set up with my own handle...Merry Christmas!
I can barely type them
ÄäÖöÜü and ß are inventions of evil Germans (I’m German) that are meant to torture the whole world outside Europe.
Try "väkipuukko".
"Endeavor to persevere"
I doubt that I would have had the stamina to get through that bigger log. But it was still kind of funny to watch you try to talk when you were so winded. LOL
Good job!
It was a job
I'd hate to get hit with that an or the sxb skullcrusher, the amount of force behind those two would be devastating, this is a great tool Brian, I'm getting one to go with my puukko 140.
Well I’m starting to like these blades! I would use both as my primary blades , they really that good!
They are that good
Great review . Nice meeting you at blade show , super nice guy.
It was nice meeting you too Chad
I am sorry
I just used mine again today. It's one of my favorite blades.
It might become one of mine.
The hole at the end of the blade is just for hanging it from a nail on the wall of your shed, as it traditionally was used as just one of those tools you had.
Varusteleka explains this on their site: The hole is needed in the manufacturing process (e.g. tempering). As a result you get a hole that you can use for hanging it from the nail :)
Wow that mosquito took a long drink Brian LOL....What a beast of a knife, definitely would keep the Sasquatches at bay😉😂
But not the skeeters
"Endeavor to persevere" I smell a Josie Whales fan, that is one of my favorite western movies. Also the knife looks amazing, I haven't gotten one yet but I certainly will
You will
Like it.
My bet is they are great
Push that computer away and relax man it's Sunday .
Happy trails
looks like a great knife 4 florida wilderness ..nice review brian ..
Ahh I need that take my money lol awesome job with the review and all of your great videos and cheers
Thanks
Their website says the bevel on the back side of the blade is because the softer layer of steel on the outside isn't capable of striking a ferro rod.
Yep.
Brian, good video. You really scared me when you took a tumble. All that huffing and puffing says you need some good cardio like me. That’s a serious chunk of blade my friend. Looks well made. Please be careful in the future. J
Cardio is good
Love my Spyderco Darn dao . But it’s a SHTF knife . It stays a Collectible until that day
That thing is a biter on the chopping ! I'd love to have one !
Yes it is.
Love the knife and their website
This is probably one of my all time favorite blades I have ever reviewed.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose It shows ;)
Baby hands
I want one, now to convince the Wife I need another Blade.
Q: “How many knives do you need?”
A; “Just one more”
You gotta ask your wife to spend your own money? LOL wow....
@@JanO209 No Jan I don't that's just a joke among men.
@@DOMINYPAUL Sure thing ;)
I love this knife.... I need one.... 💯👍
got 3 on express order, thanks sir from usa - not full tang "just" a rat tail tang
greetings from austria
ha...one can almost see the humidity...luv that Salsa music! Niiiice blade!
It was moist
cool:) looks like a good onion chopper:) and other shores in kitchen :) dog wood is like little flowers here in Alaska :) I have them in my yard:) like this knife
I like both dogwoods and this knife
:)
Dang. I want one now...
Scandinavian knives are addictive, lol.
I need a couple of those to bolt on to my lawnmower
Hmmm
Geez Bryan take it easy with such a big knife. Great job on the demo and review but we almost lost you there. Then what would we all do on Saturday mornings?
It was sort of funny though.
Wow that fall was scary, the blade went close to the family values
Not really, but it could have been bad
It's hot it's humid it's been raining it's a very damp atmosphere that mosquitoes love damp weather atmosphere so you did a real good job sparking for a fire . Exhausting environment if you're not used to it , most mammals never get used to this heated humidity . Please take care Brian outside 100 + weather with humidity is very dangerous
But it’s a wet heat ,-)
Opposite the metric system is more modern than the royal one. It was introduced by the Napoleon to confuse the Brits together wth right side road driving system ;-) SKRAMA is best though. I wish it was even longer a bit - total length of abt. 66 .. cm :-) Greetings from Poland.
To be more efficient with the ferro rod, keep your knife steady and pull back the ferro rod.
Have one and just love it they are awesome the only mod I made was to grind a really good ninety degree spine for a ferro rod striker.
Mine did fine
They are really great knives. Like to have one, but like said before hard to get. Guess I' ll just have to get on the list. It reminds me of a sax knife. Bryan be careful! !!!! Don't fall! !!!😉
They had like 100 or so when I posted this video.
skrama is short for skramasaksi or scramasax. So yeah, it is a modern sax knife.
What not to do while holding a small machete. Good info!
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Ya its got a different grind down by the grip for making fuzzy sticks. The ones you made were impressive with that zombie blade haha
It is an impressive blade
i have learned that the more i learn the smaller my knives get i used to use big chopper blades now a five inch blade does most of what i need
But there’s just something about a huge chunk of sharp steel
I could not agree more ... I'd much prefer a normal 4" blade bushcraft knife with laplander saw combo... You can do almost anything with those ... Processing up to 6 inch fire wood down to carving a spoon. I think these kinda knifes in uk also draw attention to you as a bit of a knife nut and are more likely to get negative police attention
Already bought them and love them!
So do i
2:40 It's actually a little more than 1/6 of an inch thick.
Ok
I would just love to see a Terava Skrama VS Condor Mini Duku review!
Hmmm.
Did not expect that 😂😂 6:52 and as always nice video about a nice blade 😃
Me either ;-)
I definitely want this it would make a nice companion to my cold steel trench hawk.
Yep
Could you do a review of a hultafors axe please, id love to see your take on one
We'll see. I did talk with the guy from Council Tool about their high quality Made in the USA axes.
probably my fav knife I own
I really, really like cleaver blade knives.
That's one full mosquito 🤣
Glutton
looks like an awesome blade
Kyep
Finns really know their knives!
I knife is a beast I love it. I bet when when you opened your mail and saw that it made your day.
It did
The whole time you were striking that ferro rod I was thinking "you need some fat wood".
Me too
BRIAN! Be careful young man. Send that thing to me, I need it.
I'd have a hard tie giving this one up ;-)
These blades from Finland varusteleka.com are the toughest knives I have ever owned.
Thank God you don't have the metric measurements. We fought a revolution for a reason!! Merica!!!
Yeah but what is with that “stones” stuff ?
israelpiper All US kids became familiar with metric 50 years ago when pot became popular. We like our temperature scale better because it is less coarse.
Omg hahaha I can't believe you fell 😂
A definite Brian classic
seanthomasdowd 😁😁😁😁
I have the 140 and the Skrama should be here in a week
I think you will like it.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching.
What about the world famous Red Neck sharpness test ..appreciate you
This video was prior to the adoption of some of the internationally standard scientific testing procedures.
I bagged that boss Viking Seax last year...it's a keeper.
nice blade
