I grew up near Cape Cod and stripers and bluefish were our target species. I love bluefish on the grill with a good Italian dressing on them. Now that I am in Port St. Lucie, I miss fishing for stripers, but am glad I get to see some blues once in awhile. Not the sizes we used to get in the teens and 20's on the Cape, but still great fun to catch! Great video!

Grew up eating bluefish in NY. My mother used to bake and sometimes broil it in her tomato sauce, freaking delicious!

    Capt. Lee:
I live in the panhandle of Florida and this is for all the people that call bluefish trash. I have had the large ones and they are mushy and strong. But, the small ones are very mild and firm no matter have you prepare them.

They are certainly a stronger fish taste than most fish, but they are good if you bleed them, cut out all the blood lines, then soak them in buttermilk for about 4-6 hours. Take them out, pat them dry and season them heavily with Cajun or old bay. Then coat in seasoned dry batter, dip in a mixture of whole milk and hot sauce, then back into the seasoned dry batter and deep fry. The best way is to cube them and use for fish tacos. You really can’t go wrong with this recipe for blue fish👌

We used to never eat bluefish, too bloody, however l had nice sized one that I decided to fry up with the other catch. I wrote on the drain bag Amber to see people’s taste choice would not be biased. Everyone loved it and picked it as a fav over trout and redfish, amazing. Texas coast off Sabine Pass.

Blue fish I used my grandfather’s recipe, on a grill foil bed of quartered potatoes, sliced tomatoes and seasoning some lemon juice and butter. Cover with foil and bake .until flaky. Some say to oily but lemon and tomato help that .

I've also heard to soak your fish in a water and vinegar solution to reduce the fishy taste. Love to see you try that out on bluefish, with and without soaking, and report to is what you find. Does it help a Fisher type fish taste better? Always love the vids.

Only time I enjoyed bluefish was at a girl's parents house I was dating in late 70' early 80's.
I don't know how her mom did it but it was great. Lived in NJ most of my life, and I always had a boat and caught too many blues while fishing for fluke or stripers. I tried several times to try to find a way to cook the blue. Once in a while I'd get a small blue to be edible, but never targeted them. And be careful removing the hook, they've got big teeth and will bite you. Trust me I know. LOL

personally,, I'll take a blue over a Spanish mackerel any day of the week! Coated with House Autry seafood breader and deep fried!
The key is taking out the bloodline! And I freeze blues and king mackerel and it tastes just fine! Someday soon I'm gonna try smoking them!

You two are such a cute couple.
Bluefish rule! They eat anything, fight like crazy and puke all over the boat when you get them in.
    What more could you ask.
I've eaten a hundred pounds of bluefish and they aren't a grouper but they aren't bad either. Cooked fresh and bled they are good.
It seems like We are a world of fishermen that don't like the taste of fish.

I'm finding it hard to sympathize with you. When I'm sitting here in Indiana. I would give anything to eat trash fish right now especially fresh trash fish

  • @gungadinn
    @gungadinn 10 місяців тому +1

Bluefish = Trash fish. Try using a Blue fish as bait. Most other fish won't eat them.
I've caught hundreds of Snapper Blues, fish in the 12-18 inch size range. Snapper Blues are the smaller sized fish feeding on bait fish at the surface. They will hit on any shiny lure, so spoons with a 2/0 hook and 50# leader is good. They're fun to catch, but IMO, the reason I fish is for something to eat.
The only two ways I know to get the oily taste out of a Blue is soak overnight in milk, or smother in Italian dressing and cook on the grill in aluminum foil. Make sure ALL the blood line has been trimmed away.
    YRMV.
