Surf Candy - They really are quite easy

- For a simple see through minnow, there probably is not any better fly than the surf candy. Originally designed by Bob Popovics to imitate small eels for sharp teethed bluefish. Coating the material in resin helped keep those teeth from destroying the fly after just one strike. They are still one of the most durable, flies out there. I honestly have never had to retire a surf candy. Ive lost several, but always seem to loose them before I ever have to stop fishing them.
Originally Popovic's used epoxy like 5 minute epoxy to create the bodies, however modern tires now benefit from the fast curing UV resin. There are many brands out there, but still to this day I think solarez cannot be beat for both their prices and variety of different resins. I actually use 3 different resins for this fly, their thin formula to hold the fiber into place. Then the medium viscosity for bulking up the body a bit. And then finish it with the Ultra thin which has a built in paint brush making it perfect for coating the whole body with a thin layer of very hard resin.

Weird. Last night I tied a nearly identical fly as an emerald shinner imitation for Great Lakes steelhead.
Awesome! Great minds think alike! Haha!
Truly helpful. As someone just getting into tying, I highly appreciate this.
Glad the video helped
from what I can see, you should of split the red flash onto BOTH sides of the hook, just to even it out....but a relly nice looking jig......
Thanks glad you liked it. So did I forget to add the flash on the far side? It’s been a while since I made this video. I can’t remember. I don’t think I did forget though, maybe just didn’t have it in the video?
What size/type of wire did you add for weight?
Oh man, good question, it’s been a while since I made this video. Did I not put it in the description section? It’s tough for me to go back and look. If not, let me know and I’ll try to figure it out. But know that you don’t have to do anything exactly how I do it, add a larger lead wire for more weight or smaller wire for less weight. Make the fly your own and for your own needs
@@McFlyAngler I’ll try some different sizes. I am new to tying and looking forward to what I create. Thanks for the tips. 🤙
with a wider body (in white) and a couple of legs, might be a good jig to use for surf perch.....
Ya give it a try.
Nice use of the FTD fibers. It would probably be similar using Supreme Hair. A note on wrapping the crystal flash; leave the thread at the tie-in point and wrap the flash behind the thread, chasing the thread to the end tie in. Makes for a neater, more uniform body.
Thanks, yes that’s a great technique for sure
Neat looking fly
Thanks
