  • Created by Bob Popovic, this is truly one of my favorite flies to tie and fish. I spend the majority of the fall fishing a pink over white version of this fly. Hopefully this video helps you get what your looking for when tying your surf candies.

    Just smoked a giant hootie tooter. Figured I'd try a shot at this surf candy thing. But I can't stop laughing after the first 5 seconds of the vid. The Mr. Rogers-esque intro killed me🤣

      The opening was from Montauk and we were catching false albacore. I believe at the time I was using an Orvis Acess 10wt, thanks for the kind words.

    Very great work. May I kindly ask, what were the size of these eyes used?

    • @lifliesmike
      @lifliesmike  4 роки тому +1

      Kelly R sorry for the late response I think either 3/16” or 1/4”, either works, some people go for smaller eyes or larger up to you, tight lines

    You should wear uv protective glasses when using that torch. You'll thank me later in life.

    Thanks for this great video! Would a brush applicator work better for the UV resin to ensure smoothness?

      Also, can I use mono fishing line I have laying around as thread, and if so, what # test works best? Thanks!

      So for the resin, a brush could work but I don’t think it’ll be any smoother, you’ll have to wait for the resin to even put after the brush strokes anyways. I always start with either thick or now medium resin, one or 2 coats to build the shape then thin resin to fill the gaps

      Also I’ve never tried mono fishing line instead of mono thread. If you were to do that it would have to do very thin diameter light test line. The mono thread is very thin and still builds up quickly. But give it a try, you can always order some mono thread online or from your local shop. It’s about 2-3$ a spool

    I just tried using Solarez,,I am getting tackiness..and I can’t figure out why.

    • @lifliesmike
      @lifliesmike  2 роки тому

      Could be the light you have isn't strong enough but you should be able to just hit it with the light longer. Just don't hit it too long as it will get too hot.
      What I do is after I have a batch toed I put them on a board and stick them in the sun, you can also use rubbing alcohol to remove tackiness.
      But it shouldn't be too tacky if you cure it right. Hope that helps. Maybe upgrade the light. I ha e a loon high power rechargeable one.

      @@lifliesmike Well I called Solarez and they said the light needs to be at least 390Nm,mine is 395-405. I know its not the light,cause McFly Angler another UA-camr suggested the light,and his results are great .I suppose its possible I am not holding it close enough,or maybe not long enough??? I don`t know what that number should be.The whole reason I picked up the Solarez was so I didn`t have to deal with alcohol or Sally Hansen nonsense.. I guess I have to try again..

    Can i use it for trout?

    • @lifliesmike
      @lifliesmike  4 роки тому +1

      Felix Rivas well if you use the appropriate hook and scale the size down I’m sure you could. Not to different for the thunder creek fly that was a well known trout streamer back in the day. Hope that helps
