- Amerasian Dennis Opao has been looking for his missing biological American father for 53 years, We used an Ancestry DNA test kit to help locate his father. Dennis was born in 1971 in Olongapo, situated directly adjacent to the old US Naval Base in Subic Bay. Dennis's mother told him his father was a member of the U.S. military once stationed there. Dennis reached out to The Leah and Blair Slog in September 2023, asking for our help in locating his father, little did we know that this would lead us on our most challenging and saddest lost and found documentaries ever told. This is the true emotional story of what happened to Dennis's father, Jimmy VanBussum, who we found by using a donated Ancestry DNA kit. Dennis's father was based at Cubi Point in Subic Bay and tragically died in a plane crash in 1971 en route to Vietnam from the Philippines. Now after learning Jimmy VanBussum did not have his name on the Vietnam Wall it was our responsibility to help Amy VanBussum get her uncle Jimmy, the rest of the Crew and Cryptologists on Flight RG-407 onto the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and to finally reunite Dennis with his extended long-lost family back in America. We are trying to help Amerasian Fil-ams reunite with their American fathers.

The Van Bussun family are very good people. Despite not meeting or knowing Dennis they were so keen to let him know that they accepted him as a relative. Unlike other families who wouldn't acknowledge their unknown relatives just because they grew up in another part of the world or they're just a love child.

What a beautiful story! I really hope that the Van Bussan family has reached out to Dennis and his children and HELPED THEM FINANCIALLY. That would be the best ending to the story that Jimmy's son no longer has to live in poverty with his family. Perhaps get him some teeth and create an incredible LEGACY for their fallen airman's progeny in the Phillipines.
I'm so happy that Dennis's father's side of the family is very accepting of his existence. Man, I cried throughout the whole show. OMG, Denis looks like his father! His father’s brother and sisters, and especially his mum, now know that his presence never left the world. Such a gift.❤ I saw a burden lift off Dennis when he found out hid dad passed before he was born. He was never abandoned and clearly his father would have cherished him. Now he gets to experience that love from his dad’s family. All from a DNA kit. I bet you get more of those gifted after this heart warming reunion.

Thanks for the great vid. I was also stationed there at Cubic Point with an aviation squadron and lived in one of those quonset huts. When you all walked into that hut, it brought back a flood of memories. I did go back last fall to Cubi and drove around, sad of what it once was. I'm like Dennis, AmerFilipino. God Bless

My dad was stationed at the Navy Base in Subic Bay from 1970-1973. The entire country is so beautiful. I was hoping that the Filipino people would benefit from the building that the US left behind. I attended Binnictican Elementary School and my brother was up at George Dewey High School. I have seen the ruins of the schools and other buildings. It is so sad that they wasted.
It was like going back in time seeing the Bay and pictures from Cubi Point. As a field trip from school, my class went aboard the USS Enterprise - The Big E. What an experience! Thank you for helping Dennis find his American family!

Watching from North Carolina station at Seymour Johnson military base I watched your video and I cried so much this are so painful he was looking for his dad long time ago but he couldn’t find him because he died 1 month before he was born so sad 😞 I cried so much i feel like he been through so much pain in life without his father and mother while typing my tears keep falling 😢.
It is a sad story but at the same time there is a closure for Dennis and the best thing is, the family of his Dad acknowledge him and be a part of VanBussum family.

Dennis Opao appeared to be someone I knew from the past. I am almost certain that we attended the same school, in the 1980s. During that time, I had numerous Amerasian classmates and even had Amerasian cousins. Watching the video brought me joy knowing that another Amerasian dilemma had been resolved. The sight of the deteriorating Subic Naval Base buildings being overtaken by nature brought back nostalgic memories of the days when the base was thriving in my hometown. I am particularly thrilled for Dennis, who was able to meet his American family at last, although he was not able to see his father. Leah and Blair, we appreciate your support and hope that more Amerasians will reach out to you for help without hesitation. Your vlog is a beneficial tool for individuals who may be reluctant to seek aid from larger organizations that are unable to provide assistance.
