Wow, that’s a cool song. After writing and tracking a song I always skip the mixing and mastering stages. By the time it comes to mixing and mastering I’m exhausted working on the song. Love your input though. Definitely will use this channel to learn more about the right way to mix and master.
Another very informative video. The song sounds so good before you even do anything, it was fun to try and guess what you were going to do during playback. One sentence gave me an AHA moment that I should have already realized but didn't: the slider labeled Transient and Sustain in the maximizer are now firmly in my brain as attack and release settings. Thanks for that.
Wow! Wish I had the izotope suites, it all makes so much sense using these, but fantastic info and the teaching is absolutely brilliant, so well presented and kept my interest gong all the way to the end, thank you so much.
Used isotope to master my album. Boy these modules are top notch. Not that mixing plugins are inferior, but these sound nice. And of course the design of the ozone modules are scaled better for mastering.
Thanks that was very informative, by the way, what are you using? I see WaveLab Pro 11 & Ozone 10. I was wondering since you were able to get into the song file and make volume changes on the fly. I'd like to be able to Eq a little different a couple of sections too. Thanks again and thanks for the insight.
Such a great format! Really looking forward to other episodes on electronic music. I guess this format would also be super interesting for Mixing with Neutron :)
Great episode! There's also a whole wide world of composers doing epic orchestral composing. Think 2-steps from hell, movie scores, fantasy and trailer type of music that involves the use of the orchestra and choirs in there too. Do you think you can include that type of music to master in an episode too?
I had my headphones on from mixing a current song I'm working on. As soon as I heard the song AS IS given to you, I knew the Engineer that handed it off knew what he was doing. Funny enough, watching this video, there were a lot of "HEY....I do that too" moments. It's so weird to think that I as a Producer/Engineer, can see someone I've never met before treat a song the same way, with the same "tricks". That's just so weird. BTW, those $3,000 CANS on your head are nifty.
Great video. Thanks for sharing! By the way, I loved the track. I'd never herd of The Dahus. I Googled them and listened to their 2013 (sadly) debut and only record wich sounds awsome. Couldn't find any other info about the band on de internet. In 2015 they sopped doing live shows. They simply vanished. I would appreciate if anyone has any other info about this band. Thanks!
Great series as usual, fantastic inputs all the way. If you need ideas for future episode I would suggest a few things I would be really curious to have your opinion and insight on: transparent noise reduction, how to ;=) choosing the right monitor for mastering, Problems of phase with cut filters or why linear phase eq, Defining a vocabulary for mastering music, The low end genre by genre, Do you really need multiple monitors and a monitor system for mastering? So many important subject that nobody really speaks about. Thank you very much for all this work
A bit of a vague question from an amateur for whoever is reading. I'm writing and recording songs, and I'm very happy with the work apart from one small thing. I want my songs to "beef" up as they go on, but if I add more tracks to thicken it up, it kind of becomes too much and the pieces I like get lost in the mess. Does anyone have any good tips for beefing up my songs towards the end without recording more tracks and adding more layers? Any tips for thickening the sound in-software and lifting the arrangement without bogging it down? Thanks
I would also really appreciate understanding how Jonathan is using Izotope with WaveLab? And is it possible to interface Izotope stuff, at least Ozone, with T-Racks 5?
Hi Mr Wyner, how do you get high frequencies above 13kHz up to 17kHz under control? Nearly everyone above 60 or much sooner loose it's ability to hear above 12kHz.. Did you have hints or tricks how to get the top end under control?
@@platterjockey Then you are not a representative sample to answer the question, as only 0.1% possess this ability, which is typically unrelated to music.
@@platterjockey TV's used to produce a pitch around 12khz. An instructor of mine back in the 90's used an oscillator to show that around 12k the signal dropped off a little for most people as a result of the exposure to the frequency over time. But as you pass through the bandwidth, the signal grew louder again. well, not for the kid that had impacted ear wax, he couldn't hear above 13k. So if you can't hear above 13k, maybe check your earwax situation.
Hey, John, quick question for you regarding caulking. What are your thoughts on the clocking of Antelope Audio interfaces? I’m not referring to external clocks like their 10 MX clock, but more to the oven-stabilized internal clocking of audio interfaces. Antelope touts it pretty highly as very stable and practically “mastering grade.” Do you have any thoughts, opinions, or advice on this topic? Thanks in advance!
Sure what if the producer/mixer tells you, do not put any cuts nor change my mix? N I want -7dB loudness ...this producer is from the 80s and we'll know ....what would you handle this Jonathan?
There is so much lush disturbing mid frequency reverb in the mix. Seems the guitars have any low ringing release from any distortion effect at 500Hz like brown noise. Seems the voice use the distortion effect of the guitars in low frequencies as well.. hard core mastering job.
Well it's punkish, and that's pretty typical of punk music(buried vocals). Not sure if it's because punk singers aren't the best technique wise or what.
I sorta LOVE “space… and stuff”
The genre might be rock but I still learned things that can help with any genre
The high-shelf at 27:30 was a genius move. totally shifted the track for the better imo
Has a very Foo Fighters vibe! Love it!
So good and brilliantly taught. Can’t believe these are free to watch. Thank you 🙏

What a fantastic track, sounded amazing and moves along really well.
Jonathan is one of the guys you could listen to all day. Cool video!
Please another one on a rock song that was not so perfect to begin with and address the various issues using Ozone.
This is an advanced mastering class. great video
Nothing beats getting it correct at the Input to the mixer.
love this series. for me I want to hear a touch more width in the middle to open up some space around the vocal
lol then I hear you do it and I don't like it 😂
Excellent presentation.
I would really appreciate it if Jonathan could do a video like this on mastering jazz.
Watching this video opened my eyes to so much I've been overlooking.

And the “vintage” modules can give you some mixbuss mojo at the beginning and end of your chain

Thank You Mister Wyner. Again.
You look particularly animated by this track ;-)
What a superbly put together video and how it got across the technicals and the creative elements too. And where they go hand in hand.
Thank you! 🙏

Will you do one for bass music like edm dnb?

Great video!
With my hadphones, i cant here any changes ???
can you please help me with mixing and mastering a film with nuetron and ozone....please make episode on them
Thanks for the suggestion! In the meantime, you can find all the Ozone tutorials on this page here: bit.ly/42HstPJ
Yessssss🥰
nice class~
The songs from the 70‘s were mastered for the technic from those days, vinyl and loudspeakers without very much subbass….
Niceee
