Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb vs Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue

- Here's a video I had by request was to shoot out the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb amplifier on the Vibrato channel against the '68 Deluxe Reverb on the Vintage Channel. Our last demo was primarily the "Custom" channel on the '68 amp which we feel sounds better and also shares the reverb as well unlike the regular left channel on the '65. I hope this answers a few questions for everyone.
This is a quick video shootout between them both on 5, 7, and 10 on the volumes. Hope this helps.

After listening to this comparison through monitors, headphones, and laptop speakers, I gotta say, the 68 Silverface sounds better to me. Thanks for this video!
I own the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. I played through the silverface as well as a '65 Deluxe before buying, and I greatly preferred the sound of the upper mids and treble frequencies on the '68. It sounds a bit higher fidelity, especially when you're using modulation effects where treble really matters. I think the biggest difference between these two amps is actually the speaker. The Jensen in the '65 sounds darker and breaks up a bit sooner, whereas the Celestion V-type in the '68 is just chiming clean all day long. Best amp ever!
65 is more usable for more. More head room and it cuts through so well but not too harsh.
I'll take the 65 because it has more clean headroom. If I want overdrive sound I'd just put a pedal in front. The 68 breaks up earlier. You loose the clean headroom at higher volumes. They don't make a pedal for clean headroom and you can't get that back.
I thought the 68 sounded like it had more headroom.
@@slimturnpike I thought the same thing as you.
You can always swap in tubes like a 12AT7 or 12AY7 in to give yourself more clean headroom.
Ah man, I still can't decide!!!
Both are great amps. Bottom line: it will be the player who will make the difference.
The '65 to me sounded muddy in comparisson. The '68 has that sparkly vintage bright tone from the box. The modifications from Fender on the '68 coupled with the Schumacher transformers seems to have made the difference. Having a bassman tone stack on the other channel with reverb on both seals the deal for me, not to mention it is £300 cheaper here in England compared to the '65.
65 Deluxe on neck , 68 on bridge and middle . 68 when cranked .
Changing the speaker in either would make a huge difference. I popped a Weber 12F150 in ny '65 RI and JJ 6v6's in the power supply. Made one heck of a difference.
Also removed the V1 tube and play exclusively in Channel 2 as recommended by FenderGuru. Best small amp on the planet!
Nice A/B test! Surprisingly the 68 sounded more vintage :-)
'68 all day. The vintage channel of the '68 is essentially the same as the '65 anyway, plus you get all the bassman tweediness of the custom channel. Reverb and trem on both channels; celestion speaker tightens up the bottom and adds a bit of British mojo to the tone pallet. I love my 68 - very touch sensitive, its a very versatile rock machine.
I tried one in the store the vintage channel doesent sound like the 65s clean, sounds warmer and bassier. But with an eq pedal cutting the bass and pushing the highs I think it would be identical
65 sounds so much warmer and deep to me. Fact is they both sound great. I like the 65 better though. I'm new to fender amps, was a Marshall Peavey guy since I was 14 years old. Now I'm old, 51 and the tradition blues stuff has got me so I have gravitated to the fender amps.
I have a '65 DRRI that I bought when they were first re-issued in 1994. Until last year the amp had a JBL D120F speaker in it. I retired the JBL recently and replaced it with a Celestion "V" speaker...it has worked out to be a nice change. This was a great amp in '94 and with some serious mileage on it...it still is.
thanks fur cranking it - man, those REISSUES don't sweeten up quite as good as the vintage ones when cranked, but they sure sound nice before that
Cool video!
I actually liked both.
Maybe the 65 a bit more because it is cleaner sounding.
Tough call. To my ear, the '68 sounded better in this vid. But I guess I'd have to compare them in person to really make a decision.
Oh snap! I didn't realize how old is the video was! My guy is looking young as hell.
I like em both. However the 65 is my pick.
68 all the way home. Fender must be putting better tubes in these reissues though. My old 72 Deluxe Reverb wouldn't distort much even on 10 until I put a set of Groove Tubes in it back in the 80s. I've never been much of a blackface fan. They distort easier, but there's no mids on those amps.
Preferred the '65 in both videos. Both are pretty incredible sound. I liked the smoothness of the 65 from 5/7/10 volumes. Jensen C-12K 100W > Celestion G12V-70. The '65 originally had a Jensen C-12Q, because the C-12K was a 1990's upgrade. I read the most common was a Jensen C-12Q which is still available but it's a 35W rated speaker. The '65 Reverb Deluxe being the most recorded amp, if that magic is what your after, the C-12Q might be a consideration to time travel back to 1965.
Thanks for this demo.
More of an accurate comparison to the last video.
I just tried them both out side by side using my new Telecaster Elite. I like them both for different reasons. For me, the 65 has more punch. Great for classic rock. It also has a little more head room. I like the 68 for chords/rhythm playing. Nice tones for country and 60's pop/rock. I'm going back and try the same test but using an extension cable, I will swap the speakers and see what happens.
TelePlucker have you done that??
Share your thoughts......
This is the first shootout I've heard between the two where I think the '65 won hands down. I keep wanting to lean towards the '65 anyway because I play a lot of variety, and a big part of that variety is country so a cleaner breakup is desirable, and I can get the hair I want from OD pedals.
Try the 68's left channel - it's a Bassman type sound, and the reverb is global.
I have the '65 sounds really nice, it has more headroom so it takes pedals better. You really have to let the speaker break in, I have changed speakers before and I think the stock Jensen is the prefect speaker for the amp, it just takes a long time to break in (reportedly 100 hours)
I did some easy mods on mine, changing tubes around, re-biasing and it sounds better than ever.
+L3ONARDO07 After having tried different speakers in my vintage 66 Deluxe Reverb I have switched to a C12K. Best speaker I have tried in a Deluxe Reverb amp (including the original!). I run the amp hot and need a speaker that has got the vintage fender sound but without caving in a high volumes. It is not as delicate as vintage jensens however it works much better with a cranked amp.
I did the same thing with my 65, I put a Telefunken 12AT7/ECC81 in V1 and a Telefunken 12AX7 in V2. The speaker option I went for is the Eminence George Alessandro. Google him . He was some world famous Tweed Tech in NY I guess. And he worked with Eminence to voice a new tough speaker, to sound like that of a tweed. The freaking amp sounds incredible. What's weird, I had changed the speaker and the 6L6 Groove tubes for some New GE Style 6L6GC-STR tubes. And I had changed out the V1 with a JJ 12AT7. And it sounded really great. But I heard someone say someplace, don't remember where exactly, that the Telefunken tubes would make it sound even better. I know not all tubes are alike, but they have to be at least close, or they wouldn't be interchangeable. Got a stupid great deal on the first one, a NOS. Stuffed it in, and I was totally shocked. Stunned is better. Really amazing smoothness. So I got another one and put it in V2 and it sounded even better, more headroom, crystal smooth. But then found another Telefunken, 12AX7 and swapped out the AT7 in V2 for the NOS AX7 and it's literally a different kind of amp man. I can't explain in words what it has done. It smoothed out the gain to sound melodically beautiful. And the cleans are up there in the stratosphere. If you can get a Telefunken ECC81/12AT7 , they're usually cheap on ebay. The expensive one is the ECC82. those must be made of platinum or something. But just try it. just swap out V1 and crank it up. It'll change your life man... Bob in Germany
The '65 has THE tone!
I prefer the DR 65. Nice clean tones!
I prefer the 65.
How much is due to the different speakers? Can you try them through the same speakers please
well done, I really got an idea of the differences between the two amps!
Thanks Shane!
Hi, I know that video have been made long ago but maybe you remember, does the 68 tend to hiss a lot more then the 65, specially at low volume? If so was it an issue or not really?
Thanks for the amazing videos
Camille
I thought the 65 ate its lunch.
But cranked the 68 gained some ground. 68 didnt sound bad or anything. Id jam on one.
the 65 sounds why better
Taste is a very personal thing... I´ve already owned a Fender Frontman, a Peavey Delta Blues, a Marshall DSL15C and the 65´Deluxe Reverb... and IMHO, the Deluxe by far is the best guitar amp...
The 65 fucking kills it ! In the other demo with the Tele, I liked both, but here... I prefer the 65, it actually sounds fuller/punchier. Perhaps the 68 with the Jensen speaker is the perfect amp hmmm Thanks for another great review!
65 for me with a bit less reverb I suppose. Both sound great yeah :)
Thanks mate :)
The biggest difference seems to be that the '68 is a bit squishier sounding. Probably a function of the tube rectifier.
Hey Shane, l liked both amps also. I have a 68 custom vibrolux on order here in the states. You need to demo one. I ordered it sight unseen, unheard. Thank you
'65 all day long! The '65 has more headroom and takes pedals much better in my experience.
Could you make the same comparison between both again please, but with the 68 on the bassman channel? Thanks :)
Shane, I demoed the 68 secondhand today and it sounded the same, i wanted a tad more body to the sound, so I tried it with an external 210 cab and that missing mid/low depth showed up. I recon my Hayden212 cab with eminence reds would be just the trick to making the 68 sound complete. ;-)
The 68 had a JBL in it.
And thanks so much for being the guy with the exact youtube demo
that i was looking for. Again. Cheers
The 68 seems to have a more useable reverb, whereas the 65's reverb is much more spongy. Tonally they're pretty similar, though the 68's left channel has a Bassman tone stack in it and reverb is global (the 65 has reverb on channel 2 only). The 65 is labelled as a "reissue" while the 68 is a "vintage modified" amp.
Summer of the '68 ♪♪♪
I have a great attenuator called the Mass 150 by Weber. Let's you control the Highs & the Lows post attenuation. I only have One combo the Blues Jr. Tweed Edition NOS, great sound. I gave my Son my older Peavey Classic 30 combo. All the rest of my amps are Heads. I'd love to get a HW combo one day. I did buy that Joe Bonnamassa Plexi amp shield he uses at his shows and it's great for cranking the amp at home :-)
Both are great...
Hey Shane! I have read that the custom channel on the silver deluxe is supposed to be voiced more like a tweed bassman. Having played Dr Ric's tremolux and possibly other tweed style amps, would you say there are similarities? Maybe you could do a video comparing the ec tremolux to the custom channel? Great demo and awesome playing!
On my 68 custom twin on the custom side strat, position 2 is pretty sweet. Both great on my amp but the custom is for my pedals
Wich one would you recommend / have more advantges in your opinion ?
The '68 sounds a bit brighter/raspier. Tighter in the bottom for sure. maybe it's the Celestion? Both sound good here. I wish you would've used the '65's normal ch. that's the best tone of the amp. The spotty quality reports will keep me from getting one, tho'. '65 made in USA and '68 is made in Mexico.
Is there some chance that the preamp tube was removed from the normal channel on the '65? The 65 had that thicker sound I usually associate with the tube being removed from the non-reverb channel, which increases the drive in the reverb channel.
Thanks for the review, looking to change from my Rectoverb to one of these. Think im leaning my to the 68, but both sound cool. Cheers!!!
I have a rectoverb I am trying to switch from as well! Did you end up doing it?
Ah yes, if only I could convince my wife, band mates and the crowd we're playing for to allow me to turn my '68 up to "10", LOL, that would sound great:-)
65 Blackface winner
What song is that at 0:57 in? I swear I've heard that riff. Might be wrong, in which case it's just an awesome riff.
Which one did you think was cleaner at higher volumes? I was thought the 65 Deluxe was cleaner but it's hard to tell.
+Rob Williams The 68 should break up at lower volumes, so you thought right :)
great play great sound bro...+1
There's more reverb on the 65 which makes it difficult to hear their true difference. A couple of passes with no reverb would have been helpful.
65!!!
65 all day long!!
Would a WGS et 65 be a upgrade over the V type Celestion speaker?
Easy, the '65. Wahi' Valleys
How can i get my 68 to sound more spanky like the 65? Add a bright cap? Change speakers? Thanks
How do you find these reliability wise? I'm thinking of getting one, but my past experience with fender amps (and combo's in general) has me worried about reliability!
My DRRI is from 2001 and other than a recent filter cap job and new tubes, it's been a great amp. The real question with any tube amps should be "how reliable are the tubes"? Every now and then I get a bad tube from one of the current new production tube manufacturers (I have several tube amps), but it has nothing to do with the amp. I tend lean more towards the NOS tubes now as I've had better luck with those. But the amp itself, fantastic and still going strong.
I heard more hiss on the 68, and the Blackface sounded like the reverb was turned up higher. I want the 68 because I use pedals but I've read the hiss and noise is sometimes an issue with this model.
+BooBoo the amp does hiss but then so does my 70 Vibrolux Reverb and my Pro Jr, VOX ac15, and 68 Custom Princeton. I have a 65 DRRI and there is also some hiss. To be honest this is not uncommon. Also remember that Fender made this amp in a way that they will hiss due to their electronic setup to get the tones they do, ie; the early breakup. HOWEVER all that said, when play my 68 Princeton, I usually just leave the vol at 4, hiss when not playing, but once you began strumming or picking especially when in the mix of the band, you will not hear any hiss whatsoever. My is a remarkable little amp and I just order via Sweetwater's Presidential Sale / 36 mo's no interest, the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb after playing one at a GC. Tone is incredible and if you play at home, you don't need to reach the high volume like on the 65 to achieve that breakup. You can also run a 1/4" cable from the Vintage to the Bassman at the same time and enjoy both tones when playing. This will not hurt the amp. Hope this helped
Thanks. I'm waiting for good weather because I want the postman to leave it at my front door because it's several miles to go pick it up during business hours. I'll get it from Sweetwater as well. Excellent customer service.
I hear you there on the weather. I had ordered a replacement speaker and the Postman left the box on the porch on a rainy day and I found it wet. Luckily got home before it was soaked and ruined. Good luck on whatever you decide to purchase.
Hi, which one has a more high volume clean (crunch later) ? What can be the sound difference between a 2x10 config (eg vibrolux) and the 1x12? At the end, the hot rod deluxe iii is more louder? More clean volume? Thank you
Watching someone play guitar left handed just looks weird...I'll add that I've been playing "lefty" for 30 years
68
which sounds louder in the room?
65 sounds better. 68 is all top end
Are those amps made in the US ?
What guitar are you playing?
❤❤❤💯💯💯
Can u pls demo ES 335 with a vox ac15
the 65 sounds way better
If those hurt the ol' ears I wonder what a Super Reverb on 7-10 would feel like? I bet the ol' pant legs would be flappin. LOL
haha yeah exactly mate! Cranking those big things up past 5 starts to rip the paint off the walls hehe :)
thanks, and what speakers do these both have?
Both have their stock speaker. Jensen CK12 in the 65 and the stock speaker in the 68 which is a 75 watt Celestion speaker.
intheblues
thanks and the Jensen CK12 is a new italian, but what is the old Celestion Stock model (or is the '68 also a reproduction???)
It's a Custom 68 Deluxe it's new - "The ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb’s single 12” Celestion® G12V-70 speaker also delivers a more distinctively rock ‘n’ roll flavor." - Fender Website :-)
You're standing in front of the 65... so we can't see which input you are using.
You might want to pay attention to the start of the video....
+Rob C Working on a video to this detail, becouse a "fair" comparison In the guitar world is such a snobist thing.. people is really picky and he indeed made a great job detailing all the info we'd need. It most be really.. really sad and annoying to respond this kind of questions! just imho
Yeah, why would you have to be nice when people don't even care to pay attention to the actual video?
Tinnitus is real. Take care of you ears, sir!
Already broken 🤣
He will wake one day like all of us and realize he should have cared more about his ears and that the AB pickup hype is just that, ridicules hype.
Blackface sounds inherently better
65 much noisier
