"I want to be remembered as the hero I was, not the disappointment I've become" might be one of the most powerful lines in the series without any other context needed. It's really hard to dig yourself out of that mindset when there's nobody by your side to show you another way. Your analysis was spot-on, and I thought the note you ended the video with was perfect.
Reminds me of that famous line from "The Dark Knight".
"You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain".
How much I think that muscles guys are stupid and toxic, Rockfood is actually cool.
@@Icy-be5vl ..
You know what Rockhoof should do? Live in Yakyakistan. It would be perfect. He could probably break things with having to worry about it, like he seems to tend to do a lot, and Yona would be so happy to see him anytime she comes home for holidays. Plus, it doesn't really seem like he has a place to live, since he said he can't go back home.
The Yaks are also perfectionists so he would have to be extremely careful.
@@joshblackwell8632 true, but I think him smashing and breaking stuff there would be better than him breaking and smashing stuff almost anywhere else lol.
Do you think wrapping him in stylish bubble rap help the smashing issue??
I thought of that when I watched the episode
That would be perfect. :)
"Why do the Hippogriffs need ships if they can turn into sea ponies?"
Well, even if Hippogriffs could simply transform into sea ponies keeping a navy is a reasonable idea, ships would be used mainly for trading and transport purposes with the other lands, furthermore because of the location of Mount Aris, which is surrounded by water, it would be vital to maintain a defense fleet, specially after the Storm King's invasion.
Probably because some settled already and don't have the power to transform?
I dunno
Don’t forget the train that goes there now
My response is just “why do you take trains or carriages if you can just walk or run?”
I think it's also because many seaponies permanently live on land now, and can't switch back and forth like Silverstream and Terramar. Queen Novo's pearl can only be shattered into so many pieces after all
Rockhoof appeared to be a stand in for a soldier, returning from war, feeling the world they once knew has changed and maybe they no longer fit. Sometimes they fail to find a job afterward and/or lose their sense of purpose; which can be incredibly demoralizing. It's even harder when you see your fellow soldiers/friends manage to move on and even thrive(IE Flash Magnus or Mist Mane).
ryan murphy Reminds me of "First Blood" (1982)
I feel sorry for him.
"mlp is for little girls" moment lol. This was one of the most casually depressing episodes of the show so far. It wasn't sad in the sense that it tried to make you cry, but Rockhoof feeling totally unneeded and out of place in this society so depressing. Like veterans who become homeless or were basically abandoned by their country after war (Vietnam, Iraq etc).
WHY DIDN’T HE GO LIVE WITH THE YAKS IT’S SO OBVIOUS!!!!!
He could even start up the Mighty Helm again there
heh
I know right! I was like, he should go to Yakyakistan and smash stuff with the yaks!
Or he should be with Apples.
With the Apples.
If Yona, Gallus and Silverstream yipping and growling like puppies isn't the cutest thing ever, then I don't know what is!
Also, speaking of Yona, she grew on me even more in this episode! It was touching how much she looked up to Rockhoof
Hmmm idk mate there have been a lot of adorable scenes in this show so it has some tough competition.
@@joshblackwell8632
True that! Though I must say that most of those moments belong to the Young Six... Especially in the next episode!
me too
Justin Galloway PENNYWISE: “ Just you wait! They all Float down here! THEY ALL...FFFLOOAT!!!! (Wink, wink) 😉
Seeing somnambula in this episode beat them all with her beauty.
If you listen carefully to Rockhoof, while he's sailing with Seaspray. You'll hear him use the word "Coltic," when describing how his fellow Mighty Helm warriors sailed.
This means that Rockhoof was a group of Celtic viking inspired ponies
A few things about this episode.
1. Since his appearance in Campfire Tales, I loved Rockhoof. His stature, appearance, legend and the culture of his people are just so captivating.
2. Yona and the kids were adorable in this (mostly Yona)
3. Who else but me wishes that real schools could have Storytellers in them and NO, English Teachers don't count.
4. I loved how he first entered the classroom with "HELLO, CLASS!" The tone of voice he used was just so appealing
Finally, I want to share a pint of cider with Rockhoof and hear tales of his youth so bad
same!
"and no, English teachers don't count...." LOLs!
I wish my teachers entered our rooms like that 😂
My history teacher was a storyteller. He would tell us things outside of the books. Including the weird/bizarre/gruesome facts. He one time came into class dressed as a medieval knight, in full chainmail. He was also somewhat of an archaeologist and would sometimes bring in stuff that he found, such as Roman coins. He was a funny guy and treated the students very casually, talking more as a friend than an authority figure, and even messing around with the students and making fun of them in a teasing way if they said something embarrassing 😂
@@ShizuruNakatsu Wow, he sounds amazing!!!
In the words of Merida: *Scottish accent* "You have a chance to change your fate."
In the words of Thomas Sanders: "Story Time!"
See Thomas Sanders' vines for more details
That was fast! The character development sold it for me but the underlying commentary on suicide and the fear of never being at your prime again was amazing. All the hints throughout are amazing!
Maybe he should be a Yakistan diplomat. He's strong, brave, and the yaks would appreciate that. Plus his shovel would help in a avalanche like in "Not Asking for Trouble."
Another one of my hopes and wishes for S8 fulfilled, yeah! I’m so glad that we got some exposition on what the other five Pillars are doing these days in modern Equestria, it brought a smile on my face. I’d figure that at least one of them would feel out of place in Equestria and it just so happened to be Rockhoof. I felt bad for him not being able to stay at his homeland, let alone accomplishing daily jobs in Ponyville. I had thought that Rockhoof would be welcomed at Yakyakistan for his storytelling and other talents. Besides that, I’m happy that he is very much appreciated by Yona and the others. Very nice reaction by the way. 🙂
@@maggies.224 , Huh??
I think the shovel would be very useful handling all that snow too...
Elderscrollsswimmer That’s true.
I liked this episode. This episode, interesting enough, seem to talk to grandparents or parents, rather than to children. Whoever says that MLP is just a children's show really do not watch at least most of the episodes. From what I gathered, even when you are out of your prime in life, you are not useless. You do not have to sit at home, feeling sorry for yourself, wasting your life away. You can teach the next generation of knowledge and wisdom and experience that you have learned.
But the one thing that rubs me the wrong way is when Rockhoof tries to put out a fire. Applejack says that they need a teacher rather than a hero. So if the school was on fire for real, would I help because they need a teacher more than a hero? I don't know. I know where they are getting at, but he was still trying to do what is right. They should be a little faster of explaining themselves first.
But overall, I really enjoyed this episode and the deep lesson as well.
I wish all pillars could have their own episodes.
Made me like Yona way more.
First, I demand more owls. Second, I demand more towels. But most of all, I demand more trowels. (because that was just too damn adorable!)
Same.
I've had the same results as Rockhoof every time I've tried to meditate.
He reminded me of Fat Thor. Not that he's fat or anything. Um....please don't tell him I said that.
I feel sorry for you.
Pinky Pie could have set up Rockhoof at the rockfarm, there should be plenty of hard work. And the character interaction between Limestone and Rockhoof would be interesting.
She does need a boyfriend.
Damn. Yeah, that would've been a great idea
Travis F. , Facepalm, why didn't I think of that?
travis f 5
Until he breaks Holder's Boulder.
You lay way too hard into Twilight here. She did say no to Rockhoofs request, she even argued against it for hours, but he wore her down and refused to take no for an answer. Nothing about what she planned to do was impuslive, not on her part. I honestly think it's great that she's being faced with moral questions like this this far into the show, like whether something akin to assisted suicide (or cryogentically freezing someone for an indeterminate time) is moral.
That being said, yes, Starlight and especially the CMC's would have been very useful in this episode and were mysteriously absent.
@@nessesaryschoolthing Yes, they probably could have figured the story-telling quickly. However, that would have been inhibitor in the most important thing: friendship. So all the better... I guess Starlight and CMC were busy. Maybe Starlight is training CMC to take over for her, just in case she needs to leave (as Road to Friendship showed). Someone other than Spike that is...
Exactly.
Though, if he was frozen in place, he likely wouldn't be aware of anything. But not dead.
Similar to Nora Fries.
Yona's been my favorite member of the Young Six since the beginning of the Season, and this episode has made me love her even more. She has some really sweet scenes, and it's great to know that she now has a role model in Rockhoof.
Amazing how one time, Flash Magnus was just a cadet in the Legion. Now, he's helping lead the guard; a major upgrade.
Wonder if he'll fulfill Josh's wish and help make the guard more capable
I always hated reactions of things but you are amazing I've been subbed for like one year and I still love it you have the most amazing reactions and its just cool to see someone enjoy everything so much😂
Yona wanting too be just like rockhoof is the most adorable thing
12:28 Sweet Luna she's got the touch and 13:41 WOW. He's out faster than a shooting star
Wow I see Rockhoof in that Navy uniform and all I can do is wait for them all to start dancing and singing to this jaunty sea tune
"In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the mother land
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)
They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit"
make a pony version of that
I didn't know that was the navy anthem.
Yeah this became the official song of the navy in 1979. Best part is the song is catchy enough that a music video was ACTUALLY filmed by the Navy on the USS Reasoner to be used in an ACTUAL recruitment video
I’m glad that we got this episode kinda showing how each of the pillars have adjusted to modern equestrian society
Rockhoof was great, but I was really happy to see Somnambula again.
Somnamula?
My question is why she didn't bust out laughing when he fell asleep.
I get the feeling that, if he was sent to the Apple Farm, he'd kick down half the orchard. XD
I just love the fact that Stygian apparently turned his exploits as the Pony of Shadows into a book series and apparently makes it clear that it is written by the "ex-villain Stygian".
ROCK HOOF IS STRONGER THAN BULK BICEPS!?
loved this episode but that moment when he wanted to be turned to stone still gets to me. the first time I saw it this episode it had me in tears. you can understand why he feels this way and why he'd choose such a strong and dark path but you know it's still the wrong one to take. I'm glad yona was ableto get him to see the light and move him away from such thoughts . had she not and he had been turned to stone I know we'd seen a moment where she was sad beside his statue and seeing his stone face shed a tear
there can be a WWWHHHOOOLLLLEEE lot of things he could do especially with the skills he shown in this ep like is fire safety skills like getting the kids out and putting out a fire right away and why have a dragon thing that CAN cause a fire hazard inside?? why not outside with supervision I know its probably not a popular job but he could be a fire...….colt? firecolt with how fast that drill was for one room XD
Corlina Liles
Considering that Twilight built the school with plans to have at least one dragon student, she probably made sure the place was fireproof to prevent any accidents.
We were shown that the rooms are fireproof in "Molt Down". You know that scene where Spike was in the closet breathing fire on everything. And it would make sense to have the school be fire proof considering dragons go the school.
I can't wait for you to react to the next episode!!! " What Lies Beneath" it's my favourite from Season 8.
Damn right!
One of the best episodes.
Who else loved spitfires reaction last episode and who else loved this episode sooooooo much
*Raises hand*
Best episode of the season by far!
I do as well. :)
Mantis the Changeling
You’ll end up in a full body cast drinking through a *strawww!*
Laser Ghost I already am
Such a great episode! I'm definitely hoping to see the other Pillars in their own episodes sometime. Or at the least, a Pillar-themed episode involving all of them doing something silly or learning an important lesson. Similar to the background-pony episode, perhaps! As always, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one! Well done!
He could have been a museum tour guide. He can tell everypony about his years and the relics that where used
11:48 oh boy. Firebrand is probably fangasming right now
Yona is like that one kid with the crush on their teacher 🤣
I like rockhoof's Scottish accent. it fits him perfectly. 😊👍
Yee-haw!! Another amazing reaction AppleGeek!
I only just now noticed the plushie on the top shelf of Starlight Glimmer and the "I see..." meime.. Bravo..
I want to be an author someday so I actually screamed when I saw that Stygian is canonically a published author!!!
Just the notification I was waiting for!
This is the most I’ve ever seen you laugh man!
Do you know the fact that they hinted at the massive dilemma earlier about discord, shows that the writer still got it.
And can I take a moment and say how big the balls are in these writers, that they have A character out right say they want to be turned into a statue/commit suicide because they couldn't take the changes in their life, because you know that he had no intention of ever not been in stone anymore once it was done.
Seeing Bulk Biceps scream like that was really funny. 😂😂😂😂😂
Talk about wisdom from the mouths of babes! To quote Prince Rutherford; "Yaks need to be seeing world for what it needing to be..." YOU GO, YONA!!!
Mist Mane the landscape so beautiful it made a grown man cry.
What Rockhoof was proposing was even worse than suicide if you think about it because creatures turned to stone are still conscious. He would never be free of his internal suffering. Not dead, nor alive, feeling only pain forever. That is one of the darkest implications I've seen from a kids show, and certainly something I wouldn't expect from MLP, but they handled this subject matter with the care it needed to work. For that, this episode has my utmost respect.
I honestly don't think he knew that's what would happen to him. He likely thought it would be like sleeping because everyone kept calling it Stone "Sleep".
People are always saying when he first enters the classroom that “there are doors, you know?”
He did go through the door, you know.
What¿¿¿???
To their defense, its kind of hard to tell at first glance that there was a door there to begin with lol.
3:40 "Oh, this is gonna be great!"
Yes, I'm sure we're in for a _smashing_ good time.
The problem is less the stars moving, but more the fact that there are stones and islands in the fog - when Rockhoof never traveled these waters.
As for Hyppogryphs would need ships... I'd guess that its for the transport of goods. (Much like how the ponies use wagons.)
It also occurs to me that of all the ponies, Twilight would actually know what it is like to experience Stonesleep... She did have that encounter with a Cockitrice that Fluttershy saved him from.
Remember "A shovel is never not useful."
I really loved your break down of the episode. Especially toward the end. ;w; You really made me think Applegeek, think about myself.
Omg I can't wait for you to get to episode 23.
I bet Yona lost all the grammar points in her report about heroism.
11:23 i found my new favorite funny applegeek voice 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would like to point out that being the last living member of his home Rock Hoof should have technical inherited his hole town/island archaeological site or not.
Nice idea to have Rockhoof meet applebloom, but I think she might have a heart attack 😂😂
"Suicide" episodes in kids shows are extremely rare. Surprising that MLP of all franchises has one... 😅
Judging by the accent I can tell Rock hoof is played by a Scottish voice actor :3.
You gave me an idea. Hasbro really should publish kids novels of all the fiction within fiction we've seen in Equestria. Stigien's books, Shadow Spade, and Daring Do. J.K. Rowling did this with 'The Tales of Beedle The Bard.'
"And those centerpieces were never seen again....."
Goddammit your laugh is infectious.
I was just thinking the whole time why didn’t he go to the farm or to the the freaking yaks!!!
Crazy to think we know see the 3rd generation of elements interacting with the 1st despite the gap of time
11:36 that pony 1st appeared in 'Canterlot Boutique' asking 4 Rarity's Inspire-ation dress
Why wasn't this, like, episode 5????
"Oh let's just release all the good episodes at the end of the season instead of being smart and having experienced writers write EVERY episode with the new dudes assisting and have the majority of the season just be trash : -)'
11:31, 11:54 - These ponies we could see in the episode Canterlot Boutique S05E14 =)
Wait, is this the closest thing to suicide in mlp?! Dang, this show is brutal sometimes...
Nope, it actually gets even closer in No Second Prances. Trixie does a magic act that involves shooting herself out of a cannon right into the mouth of a manticore. Then, she magically teleports out of the manticore. Problem is though, that Trixie can't teleport herself, so she actually would need an assistant. Unfortunately, after that misunderstanding that happened shortly before, Trixie was on her own. She was going to do the magic trick hoping that Starlight would come back and help her out. She couldve died if Starlight had not stayed around. There is also another example. In Discordant Harmony, Discord actually goes normal for once to try to please Fluttershy. However, this proves to be bad, as because Discord is the embodiment of chaos and disorder. Him trying to be normal was making him fade away. Eventually, he is saved before he could completely fade, and afterwards learns that he doesn't need to be normal for Fluttershy, and that she is happy the way he is.
2:11 who doesn’t love Scottish voices? Lol
I need to know what kind of accent rockhoof has it sounds so awesome
He sounds Scottish.
Also, for Rock Hoof's stories, it is best to tell them outside and away from THINGS, lest they....smash.
That ending... I always though that Rock Hoof would be an amazing Yakyakistan's ambassador or something like that, no give him an improvised, unimportant job that doesn't solve the problem
Story telling is a wonderful job. He could travel the country telling stories. It's not uncommon to be a showpony.
Well, you missed the point of the episode then. It wasn’t just about “finding a job”, it was about purpose. Also about inspiration. You don’t need to have the best job or be a big warrior hero to be important. Rockhoof didn’t feel like he had a purpose, but he inspired Yona. She looked up to him, and thought he was the greatest. Having others in your life that you inspire is worth living for. He wasn’t a warrior anymore, but he was still a hero.
If all Rockhoof needed was a fitting job, he would’ve got one. Realistically, there are plenty ways Rockhoof could’ve fit in if he just adjusted further, but that wasn’t the point of the story.
@@GuyWithNoNickName yeah
And my point is, it wasn't that hard to find a place where he could fit in, it was righr in front of their noses
Starlight Glimmer: I think you ment to say “without having to worry about it”.
Hahaha his reation at 12:26 😂😂😂😂
I think that Somanbula is my favorite pillar.
I wonder... were Spike and Smolder in the same room Spike run into during his Molt? With the uncontrollable fire then, now there's nothing left for them to burn... and I suppose fire-breathing contest is also learning about dragons (for Spike), and how to manage the fire etc.
I’m shocked they never thought about gardening. It’s far from a 1 to 1 match with what he used to do, but I imagine some of the skills would transfer over.
Besides, it’s hard to use abnormal strength to destroy the ground.
Where do you get your plushes from?
That's what I'm wondering
This was a fun episode with some really deep feels sprinkled in. "Just because something's old, doesnt mean its useless, or that you need to toss it away." Also, Yona crushing on/idolizing Rockhoof was just adorable XD especially when she pulled out that little trowel. Someone did an adorable piece of art based on that: derpibooru.org/1833604?q=rockhoof%2C+yona
When he was watching the episode, there was a Nickelodeon logo on the top left, and that show was NEVER on Nickelodeon, or even Boomerang, or Treehouse, it only appears on Discovery Family.
Nice reaction
I've been watching applegeek for a long time I've never commented on his video before so now I did
3:24 that got me good last time! 🤣🤣🤣
actually, those ponies are invading rockhoof's home, it was fine when that place was uninhabited, but rockhoof came back, they made it out of his home because they can not keep digging to find more things
7:06
"Were you killed?!"
"Sadly yes...BUT I LIVED!"
5:20 OH-YEEEEAAAH!!
6:10 You mean Fizzlepop Berrytwist?
8:45 D'OH! Why did I not clue in on wet mane earlier?
9:10 Maybe the room is fireproof; maybe it's made of gems like Twilight's castle. But if it was, would Smolder eat it?
11:00 Olay, I know he's out of his time; but that's just stupid. He should know better than that. At least it's not the tree from 'A Health of Information'.
11:25 Yay, it's North Point from 'Canterlot Boutique'. 11:50 And the sunny mare fans call "Sunshine Smiles". Now where's the goth mare?
13:00 Why am I reminded of the "feelings forum" from 'To Change a Changeling'?
15:55 Because ships are great for hauling cargo and bringing non swimming creatures along.
16:25 The constellation Pac-man; HAH now you can't unsee it.
16:35 D'OH! You called it.
17:30 Wow, from ponies turning I to trees to ponies being turned to stone, tbis show is getting dark. What's next, 'Cupcakes'?
18:40 So Twilight just agreed to turn Rockhoof into stone and you're focused on substitute teacher Spike?
19:00 I see what you did there; and no he's not.
19:10 You mean "FANdering? Hey, there are dumber puns on 'Secrets and Pies'.
27:00 You saw him on the book cover. I'll go sit in the corner now
23:20 "...and plenty of changelings..." Rockhoof has a point, who knows how many among the crowd are changelings.
27:45 I personally thought Rockhoof's story was dumb; he just got really strong all of a sudden without any sort of cause. He didn't pick up a magic shovel, he wasn't given strength by a supernatural entity, no nuclear kinetic device, no bite from a radioactive animal; he just got strong for no reason at all.
40:25 You think Yona might have found more common ground with Smolder; dragons also love smashing things and doing all kinds of extreme physical competitions.
Speaking of such, seeing Smolder regularly competing with Spike; I wonder if she'll catch his eye.
Apple geek is awesome
Sandbar's concern about going into the forest @ 6:01 to face the Ursa Major is pretty valid when you consider there track record with teachers.
I personally hope generation 5 is fake news; but if it's real, it makes precious little sense to bring in the pillars when we're so close to the end of generation 4. Especially since they've had such little presence thus far. Maybe they're here to set up generation 5; I dunno.
a lot of people even your friends have had copywrite claims. I forget if its you or the other guy who had a lot taken down and Im waiting for it to be unblocked. but some people still have to get Forgotten Friendship and most of season 8 unblocked.
Also I agree a Rockholf on the farm episode is needed. As for why no one else got involved, why there was no other choice, I think they wanted Yona to save the day.
I can't wait till apple geek sees the finale!!!!!!!
Nice reaction Applegeek!!❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
Next Saturday, the young six learn a friendship lesson like no other 🤩
Rockhoof is hilarious in this episode.
Rockhoof kind of reminds me of Thor and I am not talking about the Marvel comics and CMU one either, but the Thor from Mythlogy the OG Thor.
early squad! LETS BROHOOF IT!!!
brohoof my brony dude! :D

being turned into stone is a low key reminder of me wondering if this was rockhoof's way of... well... taking his own life...
he became depressed not having anything to do in the modern world, and thought it'd be better off without him.
that's my opinion. but still.
The part with Yona was the best part of the episode, and the trowel just made it better
Rockhoof would not only know tall tales, but he would also know of life back then, even though those stories would be a little painful to tell...
Where was Starlight? This kind of goes into her job description. Plus she herself has felt out of place before finding her place.
Huh. Good point. At the least she should've been the one Twilight was chatting with in the hall before Rockhoof started destroying the classroom
Starlight did have trouble fitting in, but in her case, she was struggling to interact with other ponies and make friends because she was just socially inept, but she did have a place as Twilight's student, unlike Rockoof, who couldn't find a place where he belonged at all.
It was kinda odd that Starlight wasn't in the episode, especially since she's used her skills as a guidance counselor for non-students before in "The End Of Friend", though she might've struggled to help Rockhoof find his place too.
Knowing Starlight, she'd probably been the one to think about having Rockhoof be a teacher at the school, but we saw how THAT went at first.
She also might've noticed, early on, how Rockhoof really enjoyed telling stories and how much the students enjoyed them, especially Yona, so it's possible if not probable that she'll eventually thought that Rockhoof could just keep doing that at the end if the episode. But we had Twilight do that.
I wish they would stop with weird absences like this. Like the one with Lightning Dust, it was weird that there was no sign of Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle. And Starlight with the last two episodes.
They don't have to give Starlight dialogue. Just show that she is hanging out with Applejack and the rest. Not to mention her absense for the school assessemblies like the one in this episode where they are introducing Rockhoof to the students and faculty. I thought they would be past this after doing that in season 6.
I want to see more episodes like the Mean Six where she is hanging with them and bonding.
