Diego Maradona of Argentina is a legend... considered the greatest player of hi generation. A stocky guy, barely 5' 5" ... but an unbelievable player. Before Lionel Messi, he was a player who needed 3 defenders to guard him. Argentina had won 1 world cup in 1978 (their 1st title) w/ Mario Kempes as MVP, but even he doesn't get the adulation that Maradona gets to this day in Argentina and around the world... even the Italian club he played for Napoli reveres him like an idol for winning them championships in the 80's.
Maradona made his debut in World Cup 1982, but he endured foul play and violence on the field that has been penalized since... In 1986, Maradona single-handedly won the 2nd World Cup title for Argentina in Mexico. It was a performance that is legendary even today... No player (Messi included) has ever been able to replicate that run in 1986. Maradona's 2 goals v. England in '86 are both famous and infamous - the first goal he somehow punched into the net and none of the refs caught the contact (it was that fast!)... he called it the 'Hand of God' goal. The second was legendary when he picked up the ball in Argentina's half and charged into the England half, beating half the team in his run before scoring the winning goal.
In 1990, Maradona endured a string of foul play match after match, but still somehow guided Argentina to the final... they lost 0 -1 to Germany after a controversial penalty was awarded to Germany and 2 Argentinian players were sent off.
Unfortunately, Diego Maradona was also a controversial figure - he succumbed to drug and alcohol abuse by 1990 and fell from grace... He returned to help Argentina qualify for the 1994 World Cup and gave them 2 stellar wins over Greece and Nigeria... However, he was caught doping after being tested and banned from the tournament after match #2 ... Argentina lost 0 - 2 to Bulgaria without him... and eliminated by Romania 2 - 3 in the 2nd round... Maradona could have arguably won a 2nd WC title in 1994 if he had stayed clean...☹
Diego Maradona returned home to Argentina to play for local clubs, ending his career in 1998; the people of Argentina gave him almost god-like devotion in his last match ... He coached the Argentina team (including Lionel Messi) in 2010, and unfortunately lost the quarter final to Germany 0 - 4. Despite having a complicated relationship w/ Lionel Messi... Diego Maradona remained a legend in Argentina and always supported the national team in major tournaments.
Pele of Brazil, a legend in Football in the 60's, called Maradona a good friend and admitted that he was the only one who understood what he went through as a player during his career. Like Pele, Maradona wore the iconic No. 10 jersey for every team he played in - Argentina, Barcelona, River Plate, Napoli, Sevilla... Most iconic players wear the No. 10 shirt - Zidane of France, who won the 1998 World Cup and helped France finish 2nd in 2006... Kylian Mbappe of France, who helped win the 2018 World Cup for France at age 19 and scored a hattrick in the 2022 final against Argentina, but placed 2nd as the top scorer in the tournament.
Tragically, Diego Maradona could never conquer his demons, nearly losing his life to addiction numerous times... and finally succumbing to a hematoma in 2020 and passing away from a cardiac arrest at age 60. Maradona's image is immortalized by the crowds at every Argentina match, his spirit revered to this day... w/ Messi joining him after Argentina's 3rd World Cup win in 2022.

As an argentine, I remember that loss to the Saudis so clearly. I was so pissed, literally the whole planet turned on us, talked s***t non stop for days -- specially our so called "latinamerican brethren". I m not the most passionate football fan, but when Lionel struck the back of the net against Mexico, I roared. In such a way that left me like "wtf was that, where did that come from?" right after. Wanna know who backed us through thick & thin? The folks from Asia: Bangladesh, Kerala India, Indonesia, Nepal, etc. Those are our guys now, they became part of the story

Maradona was a former Argentine player, considered the best in history, it used to be discussed whether he was the goat or Pelé, and it was said that Messi had to win a World Cup to be at Maradona's level, since he had won one with Argentina. in 86, he died during the pandemic
in my opinion: messi now is the goat, maradona is the 2, and pele the 3

Maradona is who older Argentinians and football fans mostly consider to be the greatest of all time. This is similar to how older people say Jordan is the GOAT while the younger generation tends to say Lebron is the GOAT. The very clear difference is that Maradona is nowhere near Messi in any statistic that matters, but still the older generation finds it hard to accept that their legend has been surpassed. Messi is the greatest of all time and you could make a case for Maradona, Pele, or Ronaldo at 2, but whoever you choose at 2 is so far behind Messi it’s ridiculous. And again don’t take my word for it, just look at the statistics, the numbers, the accolades, the awards, the trophies, the impact. Messi is clear and above ALL.
