    Late to the party, but great design and video - I've made a few of these for friends and family.
    One variation I've made is to move the clasp location - only 4-5" on the dominant hand side while the other side wraps behind the neck, so you can easily flip up the collar and clasp in front of a mirror. So you don't have to clasp blindly/by feel behind the neck.

    I had a long rectangular patch already made leftover from another project and got the idea of making a tie for my best friend for his birthday. Looked like it would be hard but you made it pretty easy. So excited for him to see it. It looks bad ass!.

    Tim, this is a great design and a perfect instruction video. I just made the tie as my first chain mail project. Very satisfying. Looking forward to more videos from you. I'm particularly interested in instructions for pauldrons and other projects using scale mail. Thanks!

    Tim, you could also make a video for a chainmail belt, maybe using small rings (16 swg 3/16", for example) so it stays together and won't break.

    On your taper to the point, how do you make it so the far edge rings don't hang down and mess with the diagonal shape?

  • @SpirallingOut
    @SpirallingOut 7 років тому

    You could add a ring or two in the center of the front of the tie so you can attach & hang things like a large knights sword pendant. It would be expensive to buy (especially if it was silver) but I think that would make it look even better. Any of Nightrider Jewelry's flatter shaped pendants would also look great hanging off the front.

    Hi. Great video, thanks! Question: I can only find 6mm (approx 1/4") in 0.7mm thick (approx 21 awg) and not 18 awg (approx 1.0 mm) thick, would they be firm enough? Thanks

    what would it look like if after you joined the top to make the knot, you folded it over??? would the second layer give it more of a tie look??? could look shit, but just a thought..

    I usually adjust my prices according to the demographics of where I’m selling at events, but I don’t want to undercut myself either.

    How did you make the "pyramid" at the end? Can you slow it down some how? Are we still adding two rings to each one added on? I'm so confused

    • @timshaw8204
      @timshaw8204  6 років тому

      Basically, you just add rings row by row to continue the pattern, but use 1 closed ring instead of 2 closed ring when you start adding the next row. I also made an instructable (you can find it with a quick search on instructables) with photos that might help you see what's going on.

    For when there is a wedding, but family gatherings means you want to be prepared to do battle😁
    Jokes aside I loved this project and might have to give it a go, I wpnder though, would the tie otself be to bulky if you where to dubble up the layers of the "body" to give it a bit more thickness? I've alwats thought the 4 in 1 method seemed so thin for most stuff and I want to remember reading about chainmails beeing thicker back in the day 🤔

    Chain mail tarzan loin cloth.... because reasons >.> jk. No for real though. If you’ve ever read rick riordan’s Magnus Chase series. I think book two, the dwarf has a chain mail tie and a chain mail vest. I would like to know another more ornate way to probably do a chain mail vest, that goes beyond the same old four in one. Possibly a four in two?

    I'm not sure if I'd trust the butted mail, at least for the part going around the neck, that's quite a bit of weight on the tiny 2 link part.

    • @timshaw8204

      Thanks! It's made from aluminum and honestly no heavier than a regular silk tie.

    • @KevinLarsson42
      @KevinLarsson42 7 років тому

      Tim Shaw Even aluminium weights a bit. Maybe 1kg? I would think that it doesn't feel like it weights anything is because the mass is distrebuted evenly around the neck.

    • @timshaw8204
      @timshaw8204  7 років тому

      You made me break out my digital scale... the tie and neck chain are 55g compared to my silk tie at 51g. Its honestly super light.

    • @KevinLarsson42
      @KevinLarsson42 7 років тому

      Tim Shaw I made a belt that is around the same size as your tie but it weighs around 1kg, it may be an alloy, that is why I thought the tie might weigh quite a bit

    I need a tie for a wedding coming up. Now my only problem is that you should list your ingredients in the dooblydoo.... Er. Materials. I don't watch too many cooking videos. What are you talking about.

    • @timshaw8204
      @timshaw8204  7 років тому +1

      I used 18 gauge 1/4" bright aluminum rings (you'll need ~500 in total). You can use any material though, and it'd work with 16g or 17g rings also. Have fun at the wedding.

      Hi Rebecca, the important thing is the size of the ring. I used bright aluminum but you can use stainless steel if you prefer (obviously it'll be heavier than aluminum) as discussed in the video the ring size used is 18g (16g will work also) 1/4" rings.
