A quick but informative run through of some 4x4 basics with the legend Travis Duggan. He has a wealth of knowledge to share with us and we only touched the surface.
Tell Travis that's the best bit of advice I've ever heard anyone other than my dad give about river crossings. Park your car and turn off the engine to let the brakes and engine cooldown. My dad is a mechanical engineer of 50 years and he always gave that advice but the funny thing is I've never ever heard any other UA-cam presenter say that before.
Hi Travis, a good morning from India. The is the best of best advice i have ever heard from any expert. The explanation was outstanding and informative. Thanks
Excellent video! Can you teel me about 2 features: 1) should I turn off traction control (push TRC OFF button) on a hard surface? 2) which mode is the best for hard surface, for gravel road (there are 3 buttons ECO mode, Normal mode and Sport mode)?
Hi, you should leave traction control on, the eco & soort modes have to do with fuel consumption and interval of gear change. It won’t make a difference to handling, just power and acceleration
Good Day! Thank You for the Information and I want to Learn more about the 4x4 off road techniques. So soon I can be experienced and thought it to others.May God Bless You more Sir Travis!!! God Bless
I have a old manual full time 4WD fortuner. Need to learn how to use 4L while steering close bends at uphill as I hear a sound of wheel spinning in 4L as differential lock is engaged. Does traction control on or off helps in this situation.
Thanks for posting this video. I live in Costa Rica driving a gen 3 toyota 4runner. Thinking about a fortune upgrade. Your test track is my everyday roads! Question, since I don't have different lock, would applying the parking brake help with traction in a cross wheel spin situation.
is it bad that our fwd light is orange but it enganges the 4lo. When driving on flat road the car would jump as if youre screwing your clutch changing gears. Its a manual fortuner
you should not drive your 4x4 in high range unless needed, for example off road, dirt road, sand roads etc. It is not recommended to drive on tar in 4x4 high range, unless your vehicle is a permanent awd vehicle, like the Prado

There's this other video specifically about river crossings, and it also mentions the same thing:

How this video doesn't have a million likes baffles me, I am going to share it in some 4x4 and car groups here in Botswana!!!
One of the best informative video on UA-cam
Great 4x4 video for the beginner!

Excellent Video
Great cars though..
Another thibg I would have lived is to have difflock available in high range too...
Outstanding explaination .. u should have also tried the train without traction control so that difference would be clear
well explained
Pity we cant drive in 4x4 on tar roads as well.. would be nice in the wet...?
Does this have a diff lock?
Correct me if I'm wrong...this info is not verified.. I think the rear diff lock will only operate when in 4L.

How do you disengage 4wheel drive
Hi For daily use fully h4 still ok or not without damaging the machine?

Might be a stupid question?
But once you put it 4L do you put it back in drive ? 🤷♂️
The diff lock switch is not well positioned , can easily be inadvertently pressed
Information is very important. Music is too loud
The only time I go off road in my Fortuner is when I park on the lawn but thanks anyway.
Nice Video :)
