Top 10 "New to me" from 2023 1. Grand Austria Hotel - combos! 2. Agricola - occupations/improvements & tension! 3. Vanuatu - tension! 4. Star Wars Rebellion - Star Wars! 5. Dune Imperium: Uprising - only this low b/c basically like og, but also still very new and it's own 6. Zhanguo - crunch-E! 7. Darwin's Journey - crunch-E! 8. Ark Nova - fun to see and play cards, but overall fine 9. The White Castle - combos, but felt samey after a couple plays 10. Lifeboats - fun setting with the right group!
I like the idea of doing the new-to-me list and not just the 2023 releases. I discovered some of my all-time favourites this past year and not all were 2023 releases. Anachrony is one of my favourite games but I haven't played the Fractures of Time expansion, yet! You're inspiring me to make that happen this year. My top ten new-to-me would be: 10. Lost Ruins of Arnak (2020) 9. 3 Ring Circus (2023) 8. Terracotta Army (2022) 7. Scholars of the South Tigris (2023) 6. The White Castle (2023) 5. Obsession (2018) 4. Sabika (2022) 3. Nucleum (2023) 2. Voidfall (2023) 1. Wayfarers of the South Tigris (2022)
Nana is the japanese, "Trio" by Cocktail Games is the european version, available since one year ago in France, and elsewhere. Number one in games sold in France.
You two are just too lovely I had to subscribe! I hope to keep discovering new games from you guys and seeing the channel continue to grow. Ps my first video I watched was your Flamecraft playthrough as it helped me understanding the game much more. Ty so much!
Cool list, The White Castle is definitely on my radar now. I knew of the hype but was not sold on the game but you might have convinced me. Some "new" games to me in 2023 were Raiders of Scythia, Legacy of Yu, Escape the Dark Castle (+ some others) and the most important board game in my life so far... Spirit Island. You have contributed to my decision to get it in April 2023 and I am now about 1000 solo games in. It opened my eyes to solo and co-op gaming like nothing else. I am obsessed with this game. So thank you and good luck in the new year!
Fields of Arle is so good. I was inspired to play then buy it thanks to y’all’s playthrough. Easily the best 2p Euro game I’ve played and an easy recommendation when people ask which Uwe games to play at that count (along with All Creatures Big & Small of course!) and which Euro games are best at two player more generally.
Happy New Year ;-) Thank you for your excellent videos. That's my ranking of the games I played for the first time in 2023. 1. Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory 2. World Wonders 3. Woodcraft 4. Say my name 5. Wayfarers of the South Tigris 6. Klask 7. Fantastic Factories 8. Villagers 9. Sabika 10. Winter
Happy new year btw you two lovely souls! I was really surprised Fields of Arle appeared in your list, although thinking about it you guys really loved A Feast for Odin, so I guess I'm not exactly surprised now 😅. I'm still looking for a copy of Nana, and now a Christmas version! This is an interesting list especially the Ceasar and White Castle ones. Edit: Going to be putting my full attention on the Tea and Trade expansion for Fields of Arle! Been waiting for that for a loooong time.
That's not a Hat is awesome! I played it with my family on Christmas. After couple glasses of wine it was just craziness. I had Apiary and The White Castle on my Christmas list. I got the Apiary, which is great too but I'm defiantly getting the White Castle myself.
I bought Inheritors on a whim, completely based on your original recommendation of it on your channel and I really enjoy it. Thanks for the great reco!
yesssss oranienburger! my number one of last year. i love how tight the competition for spaces is, very interactive even though each player has so much going on. i haven't watched your channel in a little while and this list reminded me why i used to watch you all the time. caesar, sky team, etc, great variety. i'll have to check out inheritors and trio and maybe work up the courage to finally add in the fractures of time expansion XD you lacerda nerds lololol. my other tops were scholars of south tigris, i thought it flowed great for how many interlocking mechanisms there are. and check out The Barracks Emperors from GMT.. it's a crazy design where players plays cards on a grid around pirze cards.. but you must always play on the same side of them (ie player 1 plays on the top, p2 on left, p3 on bottom, p4 on right. OR in 2p p1 on top/bot p2 on l/r). but note the top of one is the bottom of another! it's actually mostly abstract despite the historical theme.. has a lot of mori's caesar vibes (tho much longer). a weird duck for sure but rouneded out my top 3. cheers!
Thank you for the fun video. My most exciting two new games last year were Mosaic and just recently played Dune: Imperium Uprising. Fun mechanics with lots of interaction. Honourable mentions include Cooper Island, Pret-a-Porter (amazing at 3-4p), Path of Light and Shadow and SCOUT.
Mosaic is definitely better with more (3 is great), but I still encourage a play at 2 to learn it and feel it out. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you have. @@BeforeYouPlay
Anachrony is amazing. There is the right amount of pressure for every decision, Building you base feels great, the theme is wacky and allows for creative problem solving and the end of the game is something you prepare for and wraps things up in a fresh way. It is a perfect game in my opinion.
So glad that Caesar! made it onto the list! I loved that video and that series. We ended up getting Dogfight! to join our Blitzkrieg! and we love it! My other favorite new to me in 2023 include the Get On Board: New York and London, Clank! Catacombs, and Fox in the Forest.
We also love Sky Team and we were actually introduced to this channel by Monique's tutorial! Which, i might add, made the rules much clearer. 😁 (What's funny in the tutorial is you see Naveem's hand and that's it. We were excited there was more of him.)
I literally *just* ordered my Tea & Trade expansion for Fields of Arle after waiting (and creeping in the BGG forums) for what feels like an age for it come come back into print (along with the Folded Space insert for it all, lol!) I can’t wait to get it tabled!! 🐑
The sky team tutorial was great. Can’t find a copy so I’ve been playing it on BGA and it works pretty well, just the odd bug. Such a great channel, thanks for all the content.
Me and my partner mostly got into board gaming this year after being gifted War Chest (last xmas, not this, so doesn't quite make the list even though it's definitely top 3 for me), so few if any of these are from 2023 to my knowledge...that said! These are my 10 favourites: 1) Mind MGMT - we definitely wanted at least 1 hidden movement game and I'm sure we made the right choice. The more you play the more deeply you adapt, you might think one side is more overpowered but then you find the opposite after sticking with it, and _then_ you unlock the Shift boxes which unlock even more crazy mechanics for one or both sides. Big hit in our house. 2) Libertalia: The Winds of Galecrest - Strikes an interesting balance between calculated strategy and desperate chaos, the more people you play with the wilder it gets. You always know what the opponents have but some cards from previous rounds carry over, and trying to juggle it all is hilarious futility. 3) Radlands - this is such a tightly balanced and manic card dueler and I'm grateful that it's not muddied with being a CCG. Every choice matters and sometimes you have to embrace the chaos of the post-apocalypse and sacrifice your own stuff in order to get those precious camp kills and massive event cards out. 4) The Castles of Burgundy - needs no introduction? Not the easiest to get to table but always a hit when it does. 5) Ra - another game that blossoms with more players, one of those easily learned games that presents agonising decisions and amusing, competitive table talk. 6) Root - Not one I've been able to play in person, the learning curve is a bit much for others at the moment, but I love the bloodthirsty and diverse factions and the wild asymmetry with everyone doing sort-of-the-same things, but at the same time not. 7) Roam - this was a pleasant surprise, we expected it to be on the fillery side but we've had a really good time with it, especially with the extra rules. 8) Tang Garden - highly photogenic game, but not one lacking in strategic gameplay. It's a bit long, but watching the shared garden develop is pleasing, and setting up the perfect positioning for your characters is highly satisfying. 9) Honey Buzz - In a world with many engine buildery worker placementy games, this was our first, and we loved it! Not too heavy on the setup and not too long either. 10) Verdant - In a world where Cascadia gets all the attention, I honestly prefer the more perfectionist-unfriendly Verdant. While your house will never be perfect, there are always interesting arrangements and configurations, and the thumb system is a nice addition to the decision making
Radlands and Roam are both great games. I still have Tang Garden sitting on my shelf, begging to be played. I'm going to play in 2024, I swear... Welcome to the hobby!
Scout, Sea salt and paper and a few other small card games really impressed me this year. On the other hand Ark Nova was such an enjoyable experience it would have to be in my top 3.
Some of my favorites last year were Expeditions, Sky Team, and A Feast for Odin (new to me)! Didn’t really get a lot of 2023 games but I really want to try Fox Experiment.
I'm super interested in the expansion to anachrony, it always seemed like a difficult teach and I have the mech expansion and more than "cool" factor it intimidates, lol.
My favourites of the year were The Last Kingdom, and Sea Salt and Paper (very different games!). Love Anachrony, such an interesting take on that sort of game.
For me, Modern Art and Rajas of the Gangels and Castles of Burgungy were all new to me. I've become less about the cult of new and more classics. I bought Heat: Pedal to the metal and Dorf Romantik which were both okay and prefer the other 3 better. Lords of Waterdeep will be my next classic game I want to get
I still say "happy new year"...I want to make sure I'm the last one to say it every year. That's just me. Anyway, thank you both for all the games you bring to my attention! I am a better gamer for it!
Voidfall was probably my top play, although I got 2 plays of Trickerion in and that was also excellent. I need to play my Anachrony this year or sell it.
Haven’t been able to play Voidfall since we covered it during their campaign unfortunately ☹️. Definitely try and squeeze out 1 more Anachrony play if possible!!
Some of my fav games I’d love to see you two play in 2024, hopefully at least one lol: -Concordia -Power Grid -Viticulture -Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island

My favorite new to me games 1. Ark nova with marine world expansion 2. Lacrimosa 3. bunny kingdom 4. High society 5 red cathedral 6. Airlines Europe 7. Foundations of Rome
Of your list, I’ve only played The White Castle (crossover!) and My City (not my style). My top 10 games published in 2023: 10. DEEP DIVE 9. DARWIN’S JOURNEY 8. DISTILLED 7. EXPEDITIONS 6. EARTH 5. GREAT WESTERN TRAIL: NEW ZEALAND 4. THE WHITE CASTLE 3. NUCLEUM 2. AGE OF INNOVATION 1. DELTA My top 10 games that were new to me in 2023 but were published earlier: Honourable mentions: CRUSADERS THY WILL BE DONE, EVERGREEN, ORIGINS FIRST BUILDERS 10. CAVERNA 9. ORA ET LABORA 8. BITOKU 7. WOODCRAFT 6. THE RED CATHEDRAL 5. BOONLAKE 4. LA GRANJA 3. BRASS: BIRMINGHAM 2. AUTOBAHN 1. YUKON AIRWAYS Thanks for the list! I enjoyed it! Happy New Year to you!
@@BeforeYouPlayDelta is so good! Just played it with some new players tonight. 😀 (Originally a Kickstarter but it’s come to retail, published by GameBrewer.) Steampunk theme with lovely art. It’s got deckbuilding, a bit of area control, track advancement, set collection, and a card gathering mechanic reminiscent of Skymines/Mombasa, so there are plenty of strategies available. It’s not overly hard to learn, but the sequencing of your actions leads to some interesting decisions (and frequent regrets once you inevitably forget to fully plan something out … or at least that’s what happens to me 😂). Based on the games you two typically recommend, I feel like you’d like it a lot! 👍
My favorite game of the year is Downfall, The conquest of the Third Reich by GMT games. I know this isn't your guys cup of tea but that's the favorite of mine.
Top ten new to us games for myself and my wife (respectively) 10. Rococo/SCOUT 9. Anachrony/Rococo 8. For Sale/Village Rails 7. Energy Empire/Beer & Bread 6. Arkwright/Grand Austria Hotel 5. John Company/Energy Empire 4. Mombasa/Mombasa 3. Weather Machine/Formosa Tea 2. Formosa Tea/Nucleum 1. Nucleum/Weather Machine
Let us know what we are snoozing on! What are your favorite games you played last year?
Top 10 "New to me" from 2023
1. Grand Austria Hotel - combos!
2. Agricola - occupations/improvements & tension!
3. Vanuatu - tension!
4. Star Wars Rebellion - Star Wars!
5. Dune Imperium: Uprising - only this low b/c basically like og, but also still very new and it's own
6. Zhanguo - crunch-E!
7. Darwin's Journey - crunch-E!
8. Ark Nova - fun to see and play cards, but overall fine
9. The White Castle - combos, but felt samey after a couple plays

Discordia is fantastic.
Artisans of Splendant Vale was a great playthrough campaign for my family!
Pandemic Season 0, Clank! Catacombs or Legacy, welcome to the moon!, factory funner, isle of cats
Lol Monique's enthusiastic wave cracks me up everytime 😸

Nana is the japanese, "Trio" by Cocktail Games is the european version, available since one year ago in France, and elsewhere. Number one in games sold in France.
And Trio is on BGA
I wish there were an option for the nana art on BGA, because I love those happy pigs so much

Happy New Year to the two of you as well! You guys are the best and I look forward to another year of great content from you. 🖤
Happy New Year thanks for your 2023 vids and looking forward to your 2024 vids. I totally want to play Anachrony and expansions!
Loved your list! The White Castle is probably my favorite from your list. I also really enjoyed Septima and Uve Rosenberg’s Atiwa.
You two are just too lovely I had to subscribe!
I hope to keep discovering new games from you guys and seeing the channel continue to grow.

6. Klask

love the Peanuts shirt--and "to live is to dance" is absolutely correct. Happy 2024 to you both, to Dexter, and to everyone whom you love
THANK YOU! Monique was SUPER excited about both the sweater and it's motto. Happy 2024 to you as well =)

Looking forward to the next year of BYP! And I’m glad I could reintroduce you to Tiwanaku! Great game!
Fantastic list of games as always! SO pumped you've included Sky Team!
I've been banging the drum for Fields of Arle for a long time. Glad you like it so much!
Great list as always! Thanks you! :)
Glad you enjoyed! Happy New Year!!
Yo you guys almost match the people on the Sky Team box!
Lol I was just thinking that.
I bought Inheritors on a whim, completely based on your original recommendation of it on your channel and I really enjoy it. Thanks for the great reco!
Awesome!! Glad you've been enjoying it too!
Nice list! Voidfall and Stonevall uprising were my favorite new to me of 2023.
yesssss oranienburger! my number one of last year. i love how tight the competition for spaces is, very interactive even though each player has so much going on. i haven't watched your channel in a little while and this list reminded me why i used to watch you all the time. caesar, sky team, etc, great variety. i'll have to check out inheritors and trio and maybe work up the courage to finally add in the fractures of time expansion XD you lacerda nerds lololol. my other tops were scholars of south tigris, i thought it flowed great for how many interlocking mechanisms there are. and check out The Barracks Emperors from GMT.. it's a crazy design where players plays cards on a grid around pirze cards.. but you must always play on the same side of them (ie player 1 plays on the top, p2 on left, p3 on bottom, p4 on right. Happy New Year 2024 is always pleasure to watch yr channel folks:)
The honour is ours! ✈Thanks for having us in this amazing selection!

We have Mosaic but heard it's best with 4+ so haven't had a chance to get it tabled. We liked Pret-a-Porter and agree 3+ is the way to go.
Mosaic is definitely better with more (3 is great), but I still encourage a play at 2 to learn it and feel it out. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you have. @@BeforeYouPlay

Thanks for the Anachrony love guys, it's so great to see you enjoying the game with the Fractures expansion! 💜
Keep them coming!! 😇
The new Nana card game is called Trio
My love for Anachrony knows no bounds. So happy to see it hit your #1 spot for 2023. *Internet high-five*
Anachrony is amazing. There is the right amount of pressure for every decision, Building you base feels great, the theme is wacky and allows for creative problem solving and the end of the game is something you prepare for and wraps things up in a fresh way. It is a perfect game in my opinion.
Just want to say that your micing always sounds great!
A fan of the "games that end with !" genre I see
The White Castle was one of our favorite games for sure! Such a tight game experience!
Your suggestion of NaNa or Trios was a great game for my family. Hegemony was one of my favorites for 2023. Highly recommend. Happy New Year!
So many of our friends have recommended Hegemony over the past few months!
I'm very jealous, no one would play Hegemony with me, so I didn't grab it.
thanks for this! I'm also keen to see you try a playthrough of Fields of Arle with the expansion... I've been meaning to try the expansion for years
2024 is the year!! haha
I will love to see you explain the boardgame the glade ! There not so much video for this game .. Thnak for the videos :)
Happy New Year to two of my favorite game players to watch.
Happy new year! Thank you for your kindness and all the support.

(What's funny in the tutorial is you see Naveem's hand and that's it. We were excited there was more of him.)
omg so many games to look for...great video. have you try the new dune imperium uprising ?
Love this video! Skyteam seems like one we've been sleeping on. We hope yall are doing well!! :)
Great list! We're publishing Nana in the US now as Trio.

Scout, Sea salt and paper and a few other small card games really impressed me this year. On the other hand Ark Nova was such an enjoyable experience it would have to be in my top 3.
Great choices! Sea Salt and Paper was considered for our list this year, it was right on the cusp.
Sea Salt and Paper is excellent
Happy NY2U as well!
New to me games included Forest Shuffle, Vaalbara and Lyngk (most recent of the GIPF series, although somewhat old).
Dorfromantik was probably my highlight of the year, but also got some fun out of Furnace and the expansions for Arnak.
Didn't get to try 'Dorfromantik' so many people have recommended it!
Inheritors seem so neat! Never heard of it - can't wait to pick it up.
Some of my favorites last year were Expeditions, Sky Team, and A Feast for Odin (new to me)! Didn’t really get a lot of 2023 games but I really want to try Fox Experiment.
Great choices!
Great taste in games guys , anachrony is a gem!!! Happy new year to you all❤🎉
Happy new year!!
Discovered Caesar! from you guys, and yeah, it's great.
Thanks for introducing us to older games!
You bet!
What a great list! Glad to see that the list was just not all "cult of the new" stuff! I am looking forward to seeing what you play in 2024.
Glad you enjoyed!
Awesome list and something different with 'new to you'. Thought that was a great idea.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for checking out the video!
Yesterday I played a game you talket about on the chanel. Empires End. I liked it alot. We where 3 players. But i think it will be even better with 4.
Great list 🙂👍
Thank you!!
Haven't tried The Last Kingdom, but Sea Salt and Paper was very close to making this list for us!
For me, Modern Art and Rajas of the Gangels and Castles of Burgungy were all new to me. I've become less about the cult of new and more classics. I bought Heat: Pedal to the metal and Dorf Romantik which were both okay and prefer the other 3 better. Lords of Waterdeep will be my next classic game I want to get
We love all 3 of those titles!!
Interested to see what you think about Evacuation. Seems I've heard both good and not so good about it. (Also, yay for Anachrony!)

YOU HAVE THE XMAS EDITION OF NANA??!?!? UGH! haha very jealous. This was a great list! Thanks guys, and happy gaming!
Yeah we got lucky!! Hope you are doing well! Let us know if we will be at a convention at the same time and we can bring it!!
My favorite was the expansion for Ark Nova, ( Marine Worlds ). Now I'll never play without it! :)
We still need to try it!!!
You guys are lovely. Great channel. Informative and helpful. All the best for 2024. All the best everyone.
Thanks for combining your top ten list. I can't stand when duos do separate lists and mess around with crossovers and such.
Understandable, we've definitely been guilty of that haha!
Some of my fav games I’d love to see you two play in 2024, hopefully at least one lol:
-Concordia
-Power Grid
-Viticulture
-Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island
All time favorites are The Castles of Burgunty and Orleans.
I (Naveen) like Orleans, Monique isn't a fan unfortunately.
13:20 this game is published by Papergames in Brazil and it's called "Trio" here.

Is it just a coincidence that the pilot and copilot on the Sky Team box look just a teeny bit like you two?! 😊
That's funny because ... you two .... are drawn on the box of Sky Team xDDDD
The oranienburger kanal has had my interest for the whole 2023 ! Unfortunately it is nowhere to become in the Netherlands 😢😢
You guys look like the characters on the Sky Team box, you should cosplay it!

Great List!! What is Delta???
Definitely haven't tried that, but we both really enjoy the COIN series from GMT!
You guys should totally model the cover of Sky Teams! 😝
Hehe 🙃
You can say Happy Belated New Years until Presidents Day.

Zoo Vadis might be my favorite of the year. Hopefully it will end up being Sleeping Gods:DS or Septima, but have yet to play either... with others 😥
My best experience was with Revive & Wingspan Asia and lately Apiary!
Is that both of you on the cover of Sky Team?😊
Lol
The new version of NANA It's called TRIO.
Thank you!
I just realize the game release in Brazil, called "TRIO" (which means a group of 3) is literally a copy of the "NaNa" game. :O LOL
Glad to hear it’s available in Brazil!
