honestly, the teacher idea is lit. I also thought in these times, someone should make an organisation that offered teachers a platform for online classes, where most people can join in, and learn, and there is a sub system, donos, but exams are standardised and teachers are graded on how well their students do, and the pass % is on their profile, so you can see how good the teacher is. Whats also good about this, is if a student is better at learning a specific way, they can choose the teacher they think is best.

@Ludwig For the elevator physics problem remember that due to the conservation of energy no matter how much you displace upwards you’ll have the same amount coming down. Jumping or not doesn’t make that energy disappear upon impact, but it will slightly delay when you hit the ground. Fun fact: If an elevator were to come crashing down while you are inside, the best way to increase your chances of survival would be to lay down flat because the energy received upon impact would be dispersed throughout your whole body.

To solve the physics problem: Yes, jumping near the time of impact would absolutely be the smartest move. It would decrease the shock your body would have to absorb drastically which would minimize the possible damage sustained.
To answer his physics question, no jumping would not help, you would still be very much dead
Dead or not, jumping would decrease the amount of bodily harm done.

You still fall with the elevator. When you land, you're still mush.
On the train thing, it is hypothetically possible, but keep in mind it's not just the elevator falling, you are too, so you'd need to jump up at the exact same force or greater at the exact same speed or greater to actually negate the downwards force. Since you'd be moving the speed of a car (80mph ish), that's physically impossible for a person. It doesn't matter if it's closed top or not in this conclusion.
This harkens back to a popular physics question of "if I'm moving 1000km one way, and fire a bullet at exactly 1000km the other way, what happens?" The answer is that the bullet falls to the ground with no forward motion. This is according to newton's first law.
Tldr: if you move upwards at the same speed as a speed your falling, you negate the downwards force and you'll fall normally, but humans can't do that at 80mph so it doesn't matter

To answer the elevator question - jumping will actually relieve some force from the elevator hitting the ground, but only as much force as you create by jumping. One person's weight being pushed maybe a foot is almost nothing compared to an elevator falling multiple stories. So you're right that jumping should work, you would just need an insane jump to actually prevent taking any damage from the fall. That said, it's super super unlikely an elevator falls unless it's completely removed from a building or something. Those breaks are crazy, and those springs at the bottom are enough to make the fall break your legs instead of dying outright if somehow the brakes do fail and the elevator multiple stories

To answer the physics problem. If you jumped up in an elevator with no roof, let's say you jump 1 foot in the air and it goes down 3 floors (30 feet). No, this is a bad idea this has been discounted numerous times, what you're supposed to do is spread you body out on the floor so when the elevator falls your surface area can spread out and the amount of force emitted by the drop is therefore spread out throughout your body. If you jumped it would make all of this force 10x worse. It would immediately shatter your legs once you landed according the amount of pressure a human femur can take. This would also depend on your body weight but in either case your legs are broken but if you're chubby or muscular it would be much worse. Luckily, 30 feet is not enough time to reach terminal velocity so you should live about 40% of the time. :) There ya go Ludwig. The idea is good :) When you are falling you have downward momentum. It's that downward momentum that is reduced to 0 when you hit the ground in a small period of time. You want to increase that time period or/and reduce the momentum before hitting the ground. The optimal solution would be to jump before the elevator hits the ground then extend your legs and let them absorb the rest of the impact. By jumping you would have decreased the momentum that your legs need to absorb.
(Let us ignore the fact that it's really hard to jump while free-falling.)

I don't know if lud reads youtube comments or if someone has told him now, but the reason why jumping while falling in an elevator wouldn't work is because both you and the elevator are free falling at the same acceleration (-9.81m/s^2) so there would be no way for you to exert the force needed to actually jump. Maybe you can push off with your toes but all you'd do is slightly slow down the acceleration but it would be by a negligible amount.
With the elevator, you would need more than roughly 9.8 m/s^2 of force/acceleration to be able to get lift off of from an already falling elevator after a second or two.
If you have superhuman reactions, you might be able to get a few M/s^2 upward acceleration in the first second, maybe two(whilst the elevator falls). After that, you're screwed.

jumping in an elevator is the worst thing you could do. There are dampers at the bottom of the shaft, so the best thing you can do is lie on the floor so you minimise the impact. If you jump, then you will miss the slower deceleration of the dampers and get a greater impact.

For the physics problem, it wouldn't really make a difference, if you could jump at all. Assuming the elevator was inf free fall, and had been going for at least a few seconds, I doubt anyone would be able to overcome its downward velocity. Certainly not enough to jump. Even if you were able to jump, you'd just be falling at a similar rate as the elevator, though, you'd be further away based on how far you jump.

Btw it wouldn't work to jump in an elevator if you are falling down cause your body isn't able to slow down your fall. You end up crashing the ground slower then the elevator but would still die / hurt yourself a lot.

Just to explain the elevator trick. If the building were tall enough for the whole to reach terminal velocity (9.8Meters per second every second. 9.8M/s^2 - 1.8-2M/s^2 is still 7.8-8 meters per second every second in that lightning fast time frame. You will maybe have a chance to survive with life long crippling disabilities at best, but your chances are still so extremely low, it's not worth it to jump just before the bottom. yes even the distance of a few inches if timed right will still be fast enough to kill you.
Secondly my math is coming from the objects in motion tend to stay in motion and Mass multiplied by the acceleration minus the velocity of jumping. when it's calculated, the equation still spits out a number that may seem like it, but is not like a parachute a few feet off the ground landing in Battlefield. you are still heading towards the ground at the high end of city speed limits then brought down to 0 in that fraction of a millisecond when it slams to the ground. Thank you relativity, inertia, and velocity, the Bain of not only physics and engineering students but humans as a whole.

Lud Is correct about the jump it will lessen the force you fall at. Your issue would be trying to jump would require more strength depending on how fast you are falling
