I'm so curious what percentage of planner folks are ADHDers. I got diagnosed at 30, but I have ALWAYS been obsessed with planners. I think it was my way of trying to get control when I didn't know why I was struggling. And also there's the novelty rush every time you set up a new system. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of us are in the planner community for the same reason!

I think I learned I had/self diagnosed myself with ADHD bc of the planner community 😅 Editing this to clarify: my doctors/therapists missed a lot of my signs. I’m grateful how many planner peeps were so transparent and kept bringing up ADHD that it made me believe I may have it, too.

@cls3282 yeah ive been recently screened for adult adhd… i hsd decided to get a decent planner (got a hobonichi cousin avec) to keep appointments and school assignment due dates as ive got a bad memory for dates…. So yeah i guess i was trying to gain control on things

Just joined the planner community this October. And I have ADHD officially as of this month. It's historically underdiagnosed in cis women because we present differently than as outlined in the DSM5. We're also more likely to be diagnosed and treated for personality or mood disorders. Yay medical sexism 🙃

I really learned to stick to one planner system when i started to control the urge to switch. I rationally understood that i would change all the time and find flaws in every planner system in order to justify that i wanted to change the planner system again. Its like the urge to eat certain foods that do not make me feel good. There was no perfect planner system for me. I just needed to stick to the one i committed to and not give myself more choices. Also, understanding that a planner is just a tool to remind me of tasks and events i need to do and not a magic pill that can transform my productivity helped a lot. I misused planning and all that goes into it as a form of procrastinating what i actually needed to do. Now i just use the hobo cousin and 2 journals and keep my planning very minimal. I really focus on executing instead of procrastaplanning now.

That's a good advice. I need to do that myself. I feel like I spend more time planning than actually doing my tasks.

Rachelle: "Do I have ADHD?". Also Rachelle: flips between planners six times in a year. 😆
I hopped a couple of times in 2023; it was my first year in planners at all, started in March with a bullet journal, without deco, then with, then without again, then went into filofax Personal rings in which I copied the Hobonichi Weeks layout, then back into a regular traditional bullet journal which is where I'll be starting 2024. Who knows how long it will last... (and yeah I have ADHD too).

For me a system or method doesn’t have to work for the week or the month or the year, it just has to get me through the day

So at the beginning of this year, I tried a midori A6 diary daily planner. But not only was it too small for me, I obviously couldn't keep up with it lol..which is not a surprise considering that although I've loved journaling since i was a kid, that's not something I've ever done daily to begin with LOL.
Gave up on the midori A6 and then stopped planning altogether for a while after February. Then my work responsibilities picked up so i started using a to-do list book along with separate meeting notebooks for reccurring meetings as well as a general notebook to better organize my workdays...which sorta forced me back into planning.
During the summer i found a 5$ planner at barnes and noble and tried using that for personal stuff and...nope that didn't work either, LOL. My work system was doing great, but my personal planning system was in shambles 😂
Near the end of summer I decided to cut down on screentime as I was pretty burnt out with my smartphone and social media. Thats when I started getting into digital minimalism and i felt like i finally had the headspace for personal planning! I actually watched your video on "finishing off the year strong" and THATS when I decided to get one of my old notebooks laying around and start experimenting with custom layouts that would work for ME. And that just happened to combine personal and work to-do list, along with a daily spend and daily gratitude list. It's been so helpful!
All that to say I have now happily puchased a Hobonichi Cousin AVEC and ill be transferring over the layouts that have been working for me in my custom November/December planner! I'm so excited to use it lol. What a year 2023 was indeed😂

The one thing i learned that as an adhd girl this year… Vertical weeklies are amazing… But OnLy for a daily to do list 😂 I have so many things i think of (from the smallest things and notes to huge reminders)
It is where all the things u need to remember to get done go and that’s it.
I do also track a lot of things and that helps! Like morning and night meds and things like when i shower (because come on.. you forget sometimes lol)
Everything else can be cute but the weekly needs to be a space for chaos

My daughter just got diagnosed with ADHD. I asked the doc if it’s genetic and before I could finish the question he said “Yes!” And then commented on the planner that I had out when he walked in initially… soooo yeah. There’s something about it for a lot of us I think.

I feel like I ALWAYS planner hop every year and my goal for 2024 is to minimize that. I get caught up in the excitement of a new planner (and the hope it will solve all of my problems...it doesn't), it just ends up stressing me out. Filling a full planner would be extremely satisfying but also a kinda scary commitment. Like wdym I have to stick with ONE for 365 days?? Anyways, I'm a newer sub to your channel and have found your content super helpful and relatable!! I'm going with the hobo weeks for 2024 (inspired by some of your videos on finding the best system for me plus your love for the weeks) and I'm allowing myself 1 (one) additional planner for when I start grad school next fall if the weeks isn't fulfilling all my needs. I've used the weeks in years past but gave in to my FOMO of another planner/boredom with the existing one. Fingers crossed for us all to minimize consumerism and the chokehold that FOMO has on us 😭🤞

Stayed with a Cousin all year, my first after 3 years in EC A5 softbounds. I struggled with the vertical week layout after years in a horizontal format. Other than that, I loved the Cousin and bought one for 2024. I experimented with a Weeks the last few months of this year for brain dump and ephemeral lists, as the Cousin is not a 'pocket carry'. Have one for 2024 also.
Added a Hobonichi notebook for some work meeting notes to keep separate for legal reasons. I am fascinated with the Getting Things Done method of productivity (thanks, Rachelle) and plan on incorporating those principles into my planning in 2024. Thanks so much Rachelle for your practical tips. Wishing us all a successful, peaceful year of planning and doing in 2024!

I feel like planner hopping defeats the purpose of having a planner; am I wrong? I feel like it's bound to create the exact information loss we're trying to prevent by using a planner.

    • @thekatplans
      @thekatplans 5 місяців тому

I'm with you on this, I think ultimately whatever planner one uses for future events, reminders, appointments etc should stay consistent, but i also understand the urge for change, especially if one notices a decrease in productivity or clarity (which is also the purpose of a planner) changing to another book, moving future events over once, and seeing it through is annoying but often helpful - however, I don't think having multiple planners in rotation at once is beneficial to most people - it does seem like duplicate work - there are lots of caveats, though, for example if someone just wants a cute planner and a messy planner with the same info, thats their prerogative but for me, one planner is all i actually need, supplemented with my digital calendar on my phone for reminders and on the go. i think when trackers and journaling and scrapbooking and notetakeing are done in the planner it also leads to planner hopping because thats just a lot to keep up with! my brain prefers to keep that separate, so i'm learning.

thanks Rachelle for the honest run-through. :) I think everyone should give themselves permission to make changes through out the year as needed. Your video on deep cleaning productivity tools was a huge help to me and I am finally on track with planning and productivity. I have a vertical weekly personal planner, as I like weekly overveiws and then I have a bullet journal for notes, daily task, and any other notes, collections, braindumps, journaling and such. :) My personal planner works as a memory keeper with it also being very visual for what I did each day. Makes it so much easier to keep track of everthing. Stickers are such a fun way to capture memories and emotions visually. :)

I relied a lot more on digital calendars and tasks list early in the year and realized it does not work well as my main planning style! I need to use some for work but it doesn't help me feel calm or prepared for my week! Going back to a paper planner for 2024n

My current favorite planner is the Hobonichi Techno Cousin. I use the year section for birthdays and days off work, the months for the aforementioned and any appointments or trips, the weeks for planning out the week ahead, and the days are just for journaling! That way, I don't HAVE to journal every day, but I do get the peaceful, mindful planning time I want. ❤️

I actually found your channel while looking to change up my planning routine post ADHD diagnosis 😅 And I've found it so helpful! I've always been a planner girlie, gravitated hard to bullet journaling, and now I know that's how I made it to my 30s before getting diagnosed. These days I need a little more of a pre-structured planner and, thanks to you, for 2024 that will be a Weeks. Your videos showing how you use yours as well as your "Set Values, Not Goals" video really have me feeling like my planning has leveled up going into the next year. Thanks for all you do!

I’m not going to diagnose you here, but I will say the biggest thing that led me to my diagnosis was my history of being really unable to “just start” things others find basic. It took me 8 years to finish university, even though when I had support meaning body doubling mostly my grades were stellar (I had a 3.9 GPA at graduation). I find I can really want to do something but before medication I had almost this physical wall between me and that task created by my mind. I found things that left most people feeling tired completely wiped out my energy and spoons for the day. With medication it is really still a struggle at times, but it’s A LOT better and my mood has improved as I feel less exhausted.
If you suspect, there are tests online that mimic the real thing. Maybe ask your partner to print one off (should have two catagories that are individually scored) and take it. They say only 30% of women who are likely on the spectrum of ADHD have been diagnosed!

I used the common planner all the way through the year, always have a work notebook to track time and to-dos, and did most of the second year of my 5-year (although my plan with a couple 3-day weekends coming is to backfill a few months). I added a few supplemental books but nothing stuck. I'm working out kinks in an expanded system now, but those three are DEFINITELY staying

I was in rhe B6 Common Planner for the last 6 months of this year and i have been fully consistent with it. Going into thr A5 for 2024, but it will mainly serve as a journal.
For all health related matters, I'm giving the Jibun Techo system a try. The mental health and habit tracking is quite robust and already set up so i just have go fill it in as I go

I gotta say from 2018-2022 i don't know how i survived at work without the system i have today. back then i think i only had like random sticky notes, notepads and google calendar to plan out at work. eventually in 2021-2022 i moved to digital planning with my ipad which i discovered does not work for me too in the long run because i would have the ipad closed while working and can get distracting if it's open. i found one of your videos mid 2023 at the time where i'm already thinking of getting a physical planner for both my work and personal life. and i'm happy to report that i too, do love Hobonichi Weeks a lot. I've been using it consistently for the past 6 months and will continue to do so in 2024 (in fact, i was doing my layout for January 2024 when this video was uploaded 😄). I also tried the A5 Day Free to keep all my notes, personal or work, in one place. however, i blame consumerism and my curiosity 😅, i also got the A6 Hon to try out in 2024 for journaling. So in 2024, i would have the Weeks, the Hon, and Day Free. time will tell if this setup will work for me in 2024 and your videos do offer great advice every time.

I tried to maintain a separate journal and planner this year. I kept up with the planner but the journal fell away. I decided to try consolidating everything to a Hobonichi Cousin for next year. I have a separate reading journal, but otherwise I want everything in one place and we will see if it works for me. Fingers crossed!

Question: did your life become more chaotic when planning hopping multiple times a year? I saw you purchased quite a bunch of planners, and I'm tempted to get a Day-Free or Weeks alongside the Cousin, but I'm afraid that I'll spend more time planning then executing.... :)
