I’d say anytime you spin you wanna land on edge to stop your momentum from keeping you spinning. The more you spin the more momentum your gonna have. However if your going straight air, u don’t need to land on edge
IMO you're rarely ever on a flat base when riding, and when you are, it's usually for the fraction of time during edge-to-edge transitions. It's just much more stable to be on an edge most of the time, but the trick is to be as subtle with it as possible (and not lean into edges aggressively). That said, I think landing subtly on an edge will give you the most control with maintaining direction and speed, and with sketchy landings, help mitigate a wash out. If at worst you're about to land perpendicular to the slope (i.e., eat shit), then you're obviously gonna want a bit more pressure on the edge that's closest to (or "facing up") the slope.
This just made so much sense, ty! I was wondering why I was having trouble landing airs off of kickers and will definitely try this approach instead of always ollieing 🤙
awesome just what i wanted to see, thanks! great idea on the VS series: softer vs harder flex equipment under different conditions would be a cool one to see
From 6:42 all the way 'til the end has answered a critical question I've had because I tried to ollie off of a medium jump and my board / body went front heavy! Scared me! Some people I asked on the hill, , didn't know. I'l stick to pooping of jumps through my beginner progression! Thanks bro, your video probably saved my life! Much love from LA!
Did you spin? This is why both snowboarders and skateboarders alike spin on high airs, it gives you more control over your aerial movement. So if you sent it straight vs even spinning a 180 or 360 that might be why
Tommie, thank you for all the amazing instructional videos! Your videos have the most useful contents & offer so much more than in person coaching! I don’t think I can say thank you enough! You & your team are amazing!
I just did this yesterday. So this is a lesson I'm going to memorize, but this video did an excellent job of explaining and providing examples. Time for a new helmet.
This video helped me out so much man. Thank you for taking the time to make it and post. Recently a big fan of the channel brother!!! Keep doing your thing. Yewwwww!!!
Last week I think I was too much backward on my board while hitting a jump (kinda if I was going to ollie). Result : I hit my head exactly like you described in the video. Got a concussion (I had weird visuals for about 1h). Were your helmets guys :) Awesome video by the way, can't wait to hit the slopes again! Also video idea : hitting the half-pipe, maybe :)?
Yes wear your helmet and be safe!! Glad you're OK. Last weekend while skiing with my kids we saw Life Flight land to evacuate a guy that got seriously injured in the freestyle park. Be safe out there!
Hi, do you mind explain a little bit more why hitting a jump with too much weight on the back foot might hit your head? Did you fall forward or backward?
Thank you! Just recently started hitting jumps, and was wondering why i would be off balanced in the air when trying to do grabs, im so used to just popping ollies all the time.
I was literally looking for this kind of video 😂 thank you. 👍 This really helps :) by the way - you have perfect landings. So smooth! And look's so effortless. ;)
Hey Tommie, I feel that I really struggle to spin when it comes to the 180... I feel that I need to jump so high and really force my body to turn and when I see u doing it, it looks sooo freakin easy
QUESTION: on park jumps, it seems like on any kind of straight air you lean forward just a tiny bit as you take off, to create a parabola where you angle yourself downwards towards the landing (to avoid landing in the back seat). But on spinning tricks, you fully commit to the upward angle of the take off, and are often at right angles to the landing as you fly towards the landing. Then you use your just your legs to execute what looks like a massively-back-seat landing, but use the friction of the edge of your snowboard upon landing to correct your upper body position as you ride away from touchdown. Essentially you are using the landing CARVE and edge switch to put your upper body upright, but you landed hugely in the back seat. I'm guessing all of this is subconscious, but I feel like nobody is talking about this, and the upward slant of the takeoff (and downward slant of the landing) really messes with my head. To be clear, the backseat landings after (perhaps corked) spinning tricks look awesome, I am just trying to understand the physics. Learning forward slightly while taking off for a spinning trick, in order to angle your upper body ready for the eventual landing seems uncomfortable, so I think we need to acknowledge that we are actually landing hugely in the back seat and then using a post landing carve and edge switch to correct our center of mass.
I hope you get a chance to cover this in full nerdy detail but how do you land? I am thinking particularly for myself about landing switch but I figure it all works both ways so I’m asking more generally how to land. I can ride the whole mountain, do pow butters, carve, and all sorts of stuff switch. I can take off switch really well too, but the one thing I can never get right is landing switch. I always end up folding at the waste or over rotating or just generally look loose when landing switch.
Hi Tommie, when to use ollie and when to use pop? In the video you said, when the ground is lifting you up use pop; otherwise use ollie. Does that mean usually you only use pop? Because without the ground lifting you, what is the fun of jumping?
Ideally where would you start your pop off the jump if you could choose every time? Is it pretty much the second your front foot is still in contact with the snow near the lip? A foot before? Depends on the size of the jump?
hey Tommie, great vid, i remember you had one where you explain why you do the cross arms before a jump, something abt making sure your knees and body were stacked in the right position, do you have the name of that vid handy? can’t seem to remember what it was called
wish this video was around before breaking my wrist. i used an ollie on a ramp, dug the nose of my board on the landing, knocked myself out and broke my wrist 😂😂
You said something about different type of boards. I was wondering, is a hybrid rocker a good idea to buy if i want to go all mountain as well as freestyle?
LOL.. I've been snowboarding since 17 skating since 15. I'm 30 and untill now i thought ollies were the only way. I love riding to death yet I started to avoid rails/jumps/side features when every time i hit them something unexpectedly went wrong. I haven't "fell" since the last time i tried to hit a rail @ 20. I always rode with skaters (One friend never had the same attitude towards it after hitting a jump with an ollie) and I always considered "popping" a half-hearted attempt at getting in the air, not proper technique. This rewired my brain and i wanna go floating.
Any suggestions for getting ollies down for those of us who used to be skateboarders? I can sort of ollie when going slow but my brain still wants to treat it like a skateboard and try and slide my front foot. I think because of this I'm not getting enough weight over my tail for long enough to load my board. I can do tail butters alright but connecting it all eludes me.
also, if it's a small jump and let's say you want to do a 180, would you need to do an ollie because with a small jump i think you otherwhise dont get enough airtime to finish it off?
how do you run your bindings? tight and toes out? looser but toes in? i like my bindings to be kinda on the loose side and my toes around9-10 degrees out from center
As soon as you can link turns and comfortable traverse the run. Start ollying all the time and popping off of tiny side hits or moguls. Spin flat on the ground. It will actually help you progress riding in general. But the big thing is think about the consequence. If you’re not on park jumps or metal rails and you’re not going super fast you’re fairly safe to play around on your board. Then when all of the basic maneuvers feel easy you can start going into the park. Ride on👍
How should I practice while on the mountain with a limited time? I try to go out every weekend that I can but lift tickets are so expensive and I live far from the mountain so when I am out there, with a my group I want to just shred.
I need a 2.0 sadly even tho ur vedios has helped me progress so much safly but i also kinda need help . I here can i buy a cheap helmet thats worth buying. I wanna start to learn full park now instead of just boxes
Tommie, how about landing on a flat base and landing on and edge. something i am interested in knowing.
Yooo
I’d say anytime you spin you wanna land on edge to stop your momentum from keeping you spinning. The more you spin the more momentum your gonna have. However if your going straight air, u don’t need to land on edge

Just read my mind , I've been thinking about that question for while , thanks a lot for this video 🏂👊🤟
Ive been boarding for many years, but never really thought about popping and ollie, makes alot of sense. Keep it Steezy!
Wow I was literally thinking about this on the chairlift a couple hours ago. Stoked 🔥
this is really helpful especially coming into snowboarding from skateboarding and expecting to always ollie
awesome just what i wanted to see, thanks! great idea on the VS series: softer vs harder flex equipment under different conditions would be a cool one to see
Excellent vid , especially when to use the ollie v pop. I agree the pop is much more stable for takeoff and landings...
That little snap on that 720 at the end was so sick.
Let’s go, we early 🔥🔥
Hitting big bear Monday so might have to use some of this knowledge. Trying to hit rails but new to it
Wait what? The vid was released 4 hours ago, and u comment 19 hours ago🧐 somethin ain’t right

Great video Tommie! Can you do same video topic (pop vs ollie), but target it towards getting onto urban-style features - that'd be sweet!
Pop if it’s low enough, Ollie if it’s too high to comfortably pop onto
you make some of the best snowboard vids ive ever seen! keep up the great work! very informal video!

Hi Tommie. Thank for another great video. I wonder if you can create a video to share with us how to read line when doing drop. Thanks!!
Last video I watched the dude told me to Ollie off jumps, not two foot pop…now I have no idea what to do.
You are always relevant!

During those 180s and 3’s, how do you know what edge to land on? Is it typically just the one you take off from?

hes not wrong about the ollieing off jumps and face planting. I did an ollie of a jump and broke my collar bone and ended my season
This whole time I was trying to ollie off jumps 🤦♂️
Hi thanks for the video, any tip to able to jump more than 1mm its really hard for me to jump just a tiny bit
how often to you adjust your high back settings?
You said something about different type of boards. I was wondering, is a hybrid rocker a good idea to buy if i want to go all mountain as well as freestyle?

I’m looking for a new snowboard. I wear 10.5 burton boots and have large bindings, should I buy a 156W or a 156?
