Review. FT is a line that I've felt has been good for a long time and I've been wanting for them to take that next step to be a trendsetter. I don't get it from their stage presence. They execute their cadences, but I don't feel as though they "sell" them. I'd love to see more.
Also, I love in your face call outs as much as the next guy, but I feel like the snare coming back was tacky. You have your opportunity to throw punches with the line. You can even call someone out in between cadences and solos. Set something up at the busses after you finish marching out. But to march out with your line and then individually come back while the other guy is strapped up with his line is just off to me.
Finally, the individual snare player's sound was monotonous, sloppy, and weak. (That isn't meant as an insult) I should hear bold, fat strokes from your stick playing through the head with all of your fingers. (Especially the back fingers) I should hear dynamic contrast, I should see stick height differential and I should hear definition between your accents and taps. I should hear phrasing and direction. You should have a definite, clean starting and stopping point with your rudimental execution. This demonstrates the control of your hands and command you have over your sticks at all times. If you're bold enough to challenge someone individually (and you should be) be prepared to challenge them on all fronts including, but not limited to, speed. Challenge all of the skills as a player that they should have. This is how auditions work. Challenging, I believe, is a healthy way to demand that someone be prepared to demonstrate their competency as a player and being connected to the competitive showband world has actually transferred well into the competitive professional musical scene in which you should be able to demonstrate your skills under pressure.
