Thanks for posting - had a fire today in what I now know is the BCM. Luckily was at home so saved the car but lots of melted wiring so going to be a bastard to repair. Didn't even know that this was an issue.
There's a trap for the inexperience or missed step whichever way you want to look at it in this. The video shows the top right plastic trim piece that covers the mechanism being removed for access. It does not show the front-most fastener being removed in the sequence of fasteners - that appears to be a torx screw that faces outboard right at the lid hinge mechanism in other words it can only be removed with the trunk lid in service mode, which lifts that whole structure out of the way and solves the problem of fastener access anyway. Adding to the original post now the job is complete. Getting the trunk lid into service mode is straightforward - two 6mm cams to be turned counter-clockwise about 1/2 turn, then lift the horizonal members covered in plastic trim that extend backwards from the hinges. It's a two person job. The lid is quite stable in the service position. Reverse on completion. One other point.... you don't need to remove the trunk separator, certainly on a 2005 SL500.
BCM fires are one of the worst faults of the R230 because few even talk about it but they will destroy a car. Worse than an ABC failure IMO. Glad you posted this up.
@@mainlymusicman No and not even all R230 years. Mainly pre facelift so before 2006. Good news is that you can check your BCM board for warning signs or replace them early.
I used to have a lot of problems with the original trunk battery from Mercedes. Then I went to Autozone and got a compatible battery - no more problems. Plus I get the 3-yr warranty from Autozone (Mercedes no longer has a warranty for their amazing batteries). If you still have the "red battery" error even though everything is working, a mechanic with a star computer can clear it. When I park my car for longer periods of time, I unplug both batteries. Contrary to Mercedes myths, unplugging both batteries won't damage anything. I fixed the glove box light by coaxing the lever from the switch out first, then gently closed the glove box. Do not ever slam the glove box shut! My R230 is a SL65 AMG and it is a beast. It can take a battery from any tesla on the road but since this one from Autozone solved the issue, no need to do that :)
I am about to store for winter a (new to me Sl500 2005). I bought 2 delsan trickle chargers. 500ma do you have any issues when you reconnect batteries after storage?
I would like to Thank you for taking the time to video The BCM remove and replace video you helped me a 1000 percent . Thank you plz tell your father the same. God Bless you
I have such great tutos with your research on your SL... And Most problems are similar on all versions, 55 included ! Battery leaks, battery charge, battery light on thé dash.
Start cheap and easy. First check footwell fuse. Second check BCM in the trunk. Not cheap, but easier than the alternator. Then third, check alternator.
I am having trouble removing the sub woofer from my 2005 SL 500 . I removed the two bolts that I saw but it wont move,. Is it glued in or is there a hidden bolt. Also, how to I get to the video that you posted showing how to replace the 100 amp starter fuse, that might provide me with the help that I need. Thanks, L.Sid
Super helpful video, thank you! Did you have to code your BCM? I'm asking because I replaced my batteries, alternator and then BCM and I'm still getting the red battery/alternator stop car message. Additionally, it seems like my fuses are okay.
@@double_a_double_u_g1940 No excuse for poor workmanship. I've had my SL part a few times but it still looks like new and nothing is broken. This video is an extremely poor example of how to work on your car...
Where did you get the BCM from? Can u get one brand new cause what good would it do to replace a used one with a used one if this problem is known? Thanks
I have question why u changing the bcm?? It is draining the battery over night? Is it hazard light flashing by ut self at night? Bec the reason i ask u my sl500 doing that its draining the battery over night i have change the 2 battery already still draining over night!! Thanks i wish u can answer my question do i need to replace my bcm??
Please run a diagnostic first to see if that can track whats faulty. If it leads to replacing the bcm you can go ahed and do that. There are many reasons why the car is draining battery. In the mean time please disconnect the front and rear battery when the car is sitting for a long time
Hazards flashing and battery drain is almost certainly due to the alarm module inside the left front fender. Mine did this. The hazards flashing is the alarm "alarming". FCP Euro sells replacement modules. Once I replaced mine, it fixed the flashing, and I now have beeps when locking an unlocking, as well as a functional alarm.
You can pull the fuse for the alarm to stop the flashing lights and battery drain. It is in the left engine bay fuse box. Third fuse up counting from left to right. 7.5 amp and brown color. Once you pull the fuse it will only take the defective alarm siren out of function. You will still get a flash of the lights when you lock the car, but they won't flash on their own for no reason anymore.
Better late than never...but there are several videos on my channel relating to battery drains on the R230 - how to trace them and how to fix them. Common issues are glove box light, phone module in central console, old tracker unit...knackered consumer battery. Mike

Hello. What was the solution?
Will the 55 exhaust fit the 5.0 sl like the quad exhausts better than twin
Where can I purchase a R230 for my 2005 SL 500?
Try using a normal screwdriver and take a bit more care, also work out how the parts are fixed and you might not do so much damage to the panels...
It's probably his 40th time doing this to his own car. I pull my ml appart 10 times a week just because.

😉 yes
What exact model of BCM? What was the file you were trying to place in the description? It didn't work.
