China Grove is a town just east of San Antonio. The population (2021) was about 600 with a total of 6 people of Asian descent. Tom Johnston from the Doobie Brothers wrote the song when he saw a sign that said China Grove out the window of his travel bus. While many of us who live in the San Antonio area really like the song, it's really kind of funny it has nothing to do with Chinese people, nor is there a population of "people looking to the East." 😃
The Doobies' is another band that individually are very talented and outstanding as an ensemble. China Grove is in Texas. This is one of their very best songs and another is "Blackwater" that I highly suggest.
they reacted to Black Water Oct 7, 2021.
Blackwater is a seriously great song..
Yes it is a real place in Texas I have driven by it many times .I live in Temple TX 146.5 miles from it Times .if you Drive through China Grove and Blink you'll Miss it . 😆😆😆😆😆 The story goes the Doobie Brothers were on tour and their Bus broke down in China Grove. They wrote The song .It is between San Antonio and Austin TX . you can get to it off of I-35. The song was released in 1973 . so yes its pretty 70's .
Yes - those are my two favourite Doobies tunes.
@@glenobrien894 was stationed at Ft. Hood in the 90’s and had to go find China Grove. Blasted the cassette driving through it. Was a blast.
China Grove is right next to my home town San Antonio. We have several sub divisions around here that consider themselves "small towns" but our police and fire stations still look after them too. I think China Grove is like that. Too close to the city to actually be a town on it's own. Just read that almost no Asians live there, that it got it's name from chinaberry trees that grew around there. I'm 65 years old, and I've lived my whole life in San Antonio, and I had never heard of China Grove till this song became a hit.
Brad & Lex, you’ll Love their “Jesus Is Just Alright”, “Long Train Runnin’ “ and “Listen To The Music”!!!
Yes, to all 3 of those!
@@markwest9119 Yes to anything the Doobies do. They are always a vibe!
Yes. Brad and Lex please do these videos live, you’ll enjoy them more!
Three excellent choices of early period Doobie Brothers.
All Doobies music is good
Love this song. It's definitely early/mid 1970s. The story goes that the band was riding their tour bus through Texas and singer/composer Tom Johnston saw a sign for the real town in Texas named "China Grove." which is just a small town somewhere outside of San Antonio. He let his imagination run wild and envisioned a small Texas town that had an "oriental" flare (to use a word that is not used anymore to describe East Asian). He then wrote a song about this imagining of such a place. Killer guitar riff and a fun song.
What? No 50s diners and poodle skirts? Are you sure!? Sometimes, I think Lex tries too hard, throwing of her “savant aura”! 😂
There was a very large influx of Vietnamese refugees in the late 60's and early 70's as the war was winding down most settled in southern Texas from Galveston to San Antonio
oriental and occidental
Such a great band. "Listen to the Music", "Black Water", "Takin' it To the Streets", "Jesus is Just Alright", "Black Water"....etc.
You like "Black Water, that's why you mentioned it twice!
Road Angle is a favorite of mine.
I ws born in San Antonio in 1963 like my Brother and Father Before me. Our Roots go back to a small town south of San Antonio and China Grove called Stockdale. My Dad grew up in Stockdale during the Depression and later married my Mom in Arizona after getting out of the Navy and moving us to Santa Anna in California and later Colorado. Year after Year we made the long drive back to Stockdale for Thanksgiving and Christmas through the late 60's and 70's and even 80's after we had moved to Dallas in 1976, always passing through China Grove. Always we me and my brother would see the city limit sighn to this tiny town back then we would start singing this song so many great memories.
China Grove is a small town in Texas, about 10 miles from San Antonio in Bexar county, although Tom Johnston, the Doobie Brothers singer/guitarist, didn’t actually know this when he wrote the song. HUGE Hit for the Band.
God the 60s 70s rock will live forever, amazing bands that were the soundtrack of my youth
China Grove is a town in Bexar County, TX. Far East side of San Antonio. A nonsensical set of lyrics about a sheriff down in the area right outside of San Antonio. The song was released in 1973.
China Grove is a small town just outside of San Antonio, TX. Story has it that the Doobie Brothers tour bus crapped out on them as they left San
Antonio and the people of China Grove took them in and treated them really good.
Great song. I met all of them and their families. I was a waitress and just got back from my honeymoon. These guys are so down to earth and super nice. They gave me 100 wedding gift and a 100 tip. I talked with them for a long time.
OK, that is a freaking cool story! I love that they were so nice to you.
China Grove is a town in Bexar County, Texas, located on the far east side of San Antonio. The population was 1,141 at the 2020 census. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
There first number one record. From the early seventies. The first line told you it was south of San Antonio. It’s rock and roll.
The genius of Tom Johnston's vocals and guitar. The ultimate bangers started with him. Also recommend "Without You" for a great jam.
There is a city called China Grove in Texas. The Doobie Brother were formed in California and were part of the California Sound & Country Rock movements which was rock music influenced by country and folk. There sound evolved over the years with changing lineups.
My house is about 11 miles from China Grove. In fact , I got a ticket there when I was 21yrs old. I saved that ticket stub. The funny things you do when you're a kid. I have always loved this song.
A real place, with real people that they met near San Antonio, Tx. Good old pure '70's Doobie Brothers. Good groove.
Lex is adorable! When she tunes in to something, she's a lot of fun to watch.
Lex is just making me smile so much. Shes just jamming to the groove.
There's a China Grove here in North Carolina, and I used to drive by it every time I visited my parents.
I went to their concert in 1975. They were great. And they're singing about China Grove Texas.
Long train running 🏃♀️ 😴... harmonica is Out of CONTROL FIRE 🔥!
"Black Water", by The Doobie Brothers
A town near San Antonio, TX. Named after a grove of Chinaberry trees.
China Grove is a town in Texas. Tom Johnston thought he was writing about a fictional town. He was in a cab while in Houston and a discussion with a cab driver informed him that it really is a little town down around San Antone. He later realized that in an earlier visit to Texas he had seen a sign for China Grove and forgotten about it. He just found a riff on guitar and started building a song. Didn't remember until after the song was done that it was a real place. Tom is also singing lead on it. You guys need to (if you haven't already) check out Doobie Brothers song Black Water.
I saw them at Carnegie Hall when this song was just out. Listen to the Music and Long Train Runnin' were already out. They were amazing.
China Grove is a town in Bexar County, Texas, United States, located on the far east side of San Antonio. The population was 1,141 at the 2020 censu
I always like the scene from "Romancing the Stone" where Micheal Douglas character says "Agh The Dobbie Brothers broke up" I found that funny. Rock on Brad & Lex
China Grove is a town of about 1,200 people south of San Antonio (my hometown) I read that Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers wrote this song when he was passing through on his way to a concert in SA
East of SA actually.
I believe their bus broke down there, hence the song.
@@davidolson2729 you are Correct
The words you were looking for is Southern Rock. That is the best way to describe The Doobie Brothers
Quintessential classic rock
San Jose's own Doobie Brothers singing about China Grove, Texas.
China grove is actually a feed store just outside of San Antonio Texas. The lyrics are just describing the local characters that are seen there and their hanky panky.
China Grove, Texas is an entire town just outside of San Antonio.
China Grove Texas, located just east of San Antonio.
The name of the band helps explain some of the inspiration for their lyrics. They recorded some very groove songs.
Suitable music to put on for a sunny morning.
My uncle won a Battle of the Bands and got to open for The Doobie Bros way back in the day. I've always loved their music such a good vibe.
China Grove is a tiny town outside San Antonio, Texas. This was around 1975 or so. The townspeople supposedly booed the Doobies while they were on stage. Rumors. Who knows?
Doobie Brothers, great southern rock and blues band from the '70s and early '80s. Many great hits from this band. Just good old rock n roll. China Grove is east of San Antonio, about an hour away from San Antonio. Small town. Brad had it right. Lex, as well on the vibe.
It's only about 20 minutes from down town San Antonio. Yes it is its own little town but it's inside the county that San Antonio is in.
China Grove is in Texas, but The Doobie Brothers were from San Jose, California.
Saw the Doobies three times....great live band....oh China Grove is a actual place
Good-time '70s music from my high school days!
Doobie Brothers have a LOT of great songs!
Doobies on cassette in a beater car was life in summer in the late 70's.
You have to play 'Listen to the music. Classic🙂👍
Pure 70's rock; a Billy Joel vibe...acttually.
Happy uptempo rock. Love it. Lots of great music from them like this, but also some beautiful ballads. South City Midnight Lady is just delightful.
The Doobies are like Steely Dans rockin' little brother....
First concert I ever saw. Doobie Brothers and Santana.
LOL, I knew Lex would dig this tune because it brings out the dancer that Lex is.
Down by San Antonio - there's a town called China Grove - this is a song about that town. Pretty simple.
China Grove is immediately south-ish of San Antonio, Texas. I went to SA once and for grins and giggles I drove to China Grove. It was very foggy and pretty much couldn’t see it! Drove around town a while, fog all the way to the ground...where’d China Grove go? Nowhere, it WAS China Grove!
So much of their stuff still holds up strong.
Just the story of a sleepy little town, down around San Antonio. Town gossip, small town life, and what they do or don't care about. It's the story of rural America, in a hit song.
Hello from San Antonio, Texas down the street from China Grove. A small town, like a neighborhood, if ya blink you'll miss it, haha 😄 Doobies are a very talented band!!! Classic '70's rock. Awesome
Totally Southern Rock Baby!
LOVE THE DOOBIES, LISTENING AND SMOKING....
Such a huge band with huge talent.
This is a 70's song. Lex has "got it". Just enjoy the song as it is one of the classics from a great band!
this is called the motown beat.very popular back in those days and still withers the test of time.
China Grove is a small town just east of San Antonio where the Doobie Brothers Tour bus once broke down
One of the best versatile bands ever! Vocals!
Saw them in Winston-Salem, NC in 1972 as the backup band for The Raspberries. Stole the show.
Songs from my youth! Man, I was such a lucky kid! Rock on you two!
The 70s were the decade of the super rock songs, many many great classic rock songs.
Always loved this song - thanks for including!
I always remember a Whats Happening Episode when the gang went to see the Doobie Brothers in concert and got to meet them back stage and Rerun asks “so which Doobie you be?” Lmao
Rerun got got bootleggin the concert. Love What's Happening,
Doobie or not Doobie, that is the question...
So many great songs to discover from The Doobie Brothers👍🏼
The Doobie Brothers music was everywhere on the radio, from early 70s through the decade to the 80s, and still quite a bit, since then. "China Grove" "It Keeps You Runnin'" "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me" "Dependin' On You" "Listen To the Music" "Take Me In Your Arms"(Rock Me a Little While) "What a Fool Believes" "Black Water" "Takin' It To the Streets" "Minute By Minute" "Long Train Runnin'" "Here To Love You" (more)
Story goes the town was named for a grove of chinaberry trees. I think the town was settled by German/European people.
This song never gets old, it always sounds fresh.
In the U.S. Southern Rock Bands all blended generically into one sound.
Though, The Doobie Brothers were unique.
They had a long string of Hit songs in the 70's.
Songs like “Jesus Is Just Alright”, “Long Train Runnin’ “ and “Listen To The Music” Black Water", "Takin' it To the Streets", Take Me In Your Arms"(Rock Me a Little While)
' Rockin' Down The Highway ' ' Minute by Minute '
Great Rock Band!!!!
They were the favorite band of the biker gang hell's angels.
China Grove, TX. Chinese refugee community still holding their traditions. Awesome song!
The community became famous in 1973 when the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove" became a hit song. It was written and sung by The Doobies' Tom Johnston, who wrote it after passing through the town on his way to a concert in San Antonio, Texas. Despite its name and Johnston's lyrics, China Grove does not have a sizable Asian population; residents tracing their heritage to Asia number less than 0.1% of the population. Instead, the town got its name from a grove of chinaberry trees once located near the town's train depot, no longer extant.
The tour bus broke down there. The people were super friendly and helped the band get the bus fixed. So they wrote a song about the experience.
It was probably founded by a bunch of Chinese people that built the railroad system in Texas back in the 1800's.
@@briansmith48 China Grove never had a large population of Chinese.
Y'all should do more of their music. I have a Doobie story. I had been dating this girl, who is now my wife, for about a week when she cancelled our date to go with someone else who had tickets to the Doobie concert in Memphis. She never dated anyone else after that, so I like to think I lost to the Doobie Brothers and not who she went with. I can understand...I've always loved the Doobies as well! This past March we celebrated 46 years together. ☺♥
I think the fifties vibe is from the boogie Woogie piano? I never thought of it that way! Now I can’t unhear it. It’s cool to “hear” it for the first time through your ears
another great band from the seventies
Oh, man, you're making me feel ancient! The 70's! Oh, man! I remember going to the Doobie Brothers concert in '77 and smoking things that were less then legal on an open lawn, and watching them play this live. What a day! Thanks for the memories!
The in between vibe is more of a Folk / Rock thing in my opinion, though others may see it differently.
Gotta check out "Black Water" and "Jesus Is Just Alright"!
A real Place, Lex. I use to work in China Grove, Tx. It is just east of San Antonio. It is a very peaceful town. And it is on the map.
Been a fan of these guys since I was a kid.
Also my mom was friends with Pat Simmons in high school.
China Grove is a small suburb of San Antonio, Texas. According to the most recent American Community Survey (ACS) the percentage of Asians in China Grove is 0.00%.
Great song! Well used in The Simpsons too.
Incredible song & band. Powerful nostalgia for me.
"Taking It To The Streets" and
"What a Fool Believes"
China Grove is a city in Texas, east of SanAntonio
"It Keeps You Running" and "Dependin' On You" are two tunes from the Doobies you should check out
LOL I live about 40 miles from China Grove. It is a place. love the reaction
In the 1960s and 1970s, there was an increased interest in eastern religions and New Age mysticism. This song mentions people looking to the east. Remember the Beatles going to India to meet with the Maharishi for spiritual guidance.
You have to play “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman “, my favorite from the Doobies you won’t regret it .
one if the best top 10 70s rock songs
About time you these guy's and song seen them four times over the yrs and they never get old .....keep it rocking 😎
I love the guitars in this song...
Lex is officially a classic rock babe..✌😎 next step. Blood, Sweat & Tears >>Spinning Wheel
China Grove, TX
The entire The Captain and Me album is great. Try Without You for a full on rocker and South City Midnight Lady for something a bit more mellow.
Skunk Baxter, one of the Doobie's, was previously in Steely Dan.
Baxter recommended to the Doobies Michael Mcdonald when
the Doobies lost their original singer due to legal troubles and
a drug problem.
Michael Mcdonald was ALSO in Steely Dan.
Keep rockin'.
Michael Ray.
This might be my favorite song by them
Such great tunes from a great band🎶
This is from '72, Tom Johnson on Lead----------before Michael McDonald.
