Things I loved and appreciated most about On Pointe: THE DIVERSITY. The poise of the students. Brandon (I adore him). They showed the dancers eating multiple times and it was casual and normal, which doesn't often happen in dance shows and documentaries (Spoiler alert: dancers eat and we eat a lot). No manufactured drama - no one was breaking someone else's pointe shoes or being catty or anything else. I adored every minute and I wish the best for every student featured.
Generation Z and Generation Alpha are more academic than previous generations. We’re likely to be lacking in basic life skills (parents push academics over life experiences like jobs or even chores) , but far more academic.
LOL! When I was a girl, I knew some ballet students. As an adult, I have also crossed paths with some former ballet dancers. I didn’t notice how articulate they were in the show because to me that’s how ballet dancers talk.
I watched it together with my sister in one sitting. She doesn't care about any kind of dance at all, but she loved the series! It's very inspiring and as an adult dancer it felt like I was living vicariously through the students.
And I feel honored that your share your life with your fans, on this platform. You look like you are happy...and your hair looks healthy. I was worried your thyroid issues would return with the stress of the pandemic. So grateful to see you doing so well!

I have to say that I was disturbed by Sam’s injury. The fact that he was coming back from an injury and than got re-injured made me upset with teachers and his physical therapist. I could feel his pain sitting on the side. Especially after being recently promoted to Advanced Level. Overall the series was enjoyable. I’m glad Disney+ produced the series, I think anywhere else it would have been hard to stomach.
This show was so well done. I felt like I was one of those kids every episode and was so emotional. I think I cried tears of joy every time. Though I’ve never danced at that level I know what it’s like to want and love something so badly. Thank you for reviewing this Kathryn. I was wondering how accurate it was.
I loved the series and wondered if you had watched it and was interested in your perspective! Thank you for sharing! I must say, Dena was my absolute highlight of the series. P.s. - You look lovely! That deep red is your color!
I love hearing this from you. that show is what got me back into ballet and ironically enough into your youtube classes. I took ballet from age 10-19 but with college and working it became too hard and I sadly couldn't keep it up with it anymore. Now I am 32 and have taken a class here and there over the past decade, but otherwise can barely touch my toes anymore lol. After watching this series TWICE because I loved it so much and I called my mom and asked if I could have my ballet barre at my apartment. I figured who needs a dining room table when they live alone in a pandemic. So my new dining room is now a ballet room and the first class I found was yours :) I've been watching your videos every day and I love it so much. I hope that I get strong enough to get back on pointe eventually. So ironic that the person whose youtube classes I started to take was someone that also went to SAB which was the show about the same school is what led me back :) full circle moment here! I watched this show in one evening with two of my roommates who know nothing about ballet and we all loved it. It made me excited to get back in the studio again!
Kathryn, I wanted to thank you deeply, I have been doing one of your videos almost daily in the past few months, and they have helped me and kept me going through these difficult and unstable times. Thank you very much, your videos really do mean a lot to me.
I really enjoyed it and it definitely seemed real and not dramatized, glad to know it wasn’t. What a trip for you to see people you worked with and know so well!
In the series, we see many of the students volunteer to do various things like monitor the children’s auditions or TA some of the children’s classes. Are those strictly volunteer or are they selected to do those jobs? Also, since you lived not in the dorms, I’m assuming most of the people who do it are those living in residence?
What struck me most was the potential impact of COVID on these young dancers' careers, because a long interruption in training could be disastrous. It was heartbreaking seeing the excitement of the new NYCB apprentices - not knowing they won't be onstage at all next season.
You should watch a German series about a ballet student called “Anna.” It’s a 6-part Christmas series, and it’s hugely popular in the German-speaking community.
I enjoyed it so much! I feel so bad for those older kids who were working for apprentice spots right before COVID hit. What an incredibly tough time to be starting your dream career and trying to prove yourself to the company! Those kids have some serious grit and perseverance! I want to see more! I hope they make more of these episodes once things are back to somewhat normal! I used to love watching those City Ballet videos about the school and company too!

Hey, Kathryn! You mentioned how the dancers don't rehearse with the orchestra until the dress/day before performance. In your experience, is the transition from piano to orchestra a little strange for the dancers? Does the conductor sit with you guys during rehearsals with piano to help the transition?
Yes- the conductors always come to rehearsals, which helps a LOT. However it is often very strange when you first dance to the orchestra. Especially if you are not that familiar with the score. We relied on counts a lot of the time!
So glad to hear this! I danced with a small company, but mostly had experience with UNCSA (and am from the town where it is), and I would say watching it was very accurate. I had many friends from UNCSA who went to SAB. Anyway so happy to hear your thoughts! 💗💗💗
I do agree with that ^^ but would STILL love to hear your thoughts around ballet portrayed in modern/ mainstream media. There are just so few shows about dance/ballet. Tiler Peck makes an appearance in one of the episodes, so what do you think about dancers crossing over to these types of dramatized versions of ballet/dance?
Thanks for doing this, love the inside take on it. I binged it over 2 days I loved it!! Was a shame they had to end it early. Megan interviewed Dena and I recommend it to everyone, she added a lot of additional info about it. What made it even more fun was that NYCB’s streamed Nutcracker on Marquee was from 2019 and when On Pointe was filmed. So I had a blast looking for the featured kids in the documentary and rooting for them, and also the one who got her apprenticeship, you could pick her out if you looked. And thank you Disney for focusing on them as the high performance athletes they are! 🙌🏻😍❤️❤️
Thankyou for your take on this series. I have to admit it bothered me when 9 or 10 year old kids talked about how stressful things were. Kids that age shouldn't be that stressed- they shouldn't know what that means! I would love to see your reaction to the Aussie series Dance Academy some time.
i’m so glad it’s accurate! i’ve always been interested in the subject of professional ballet schools and what it was like. i’ve always been interested in ballet and my goal is to be on point by the time i’m 25 at the latest (i’m currently 17 😂). i’ve been in and out of ballet classes my entire life and i really enjoy the art and the skill it takes. thank you for spreading the passion and the encouragement to keep me going to me goal ❤️
I love hearing your input on this! I’m debating watching it, as I had a lot of childhood trauma from my experience as a child ballet dancer with a big company in another state. I’m worried even though it seems to be very positive & not as “reality show” produced (which I’m really glad to hear!), I still may get triggered and taken back to bad memories of a similar time & experience in my life. But hearing your thoughts as someone who lived pretty much this exact situation is really fantastic, so I really appreciate this ❤️
@Rosa Dalton thank you :) I’m at a much better place years later now, I have a degree in vocal music and perform as a professional actress (well during non-covid times at least lol)! slowly but surely trying to get back into dance bc I still love it despite everything’s that happened, I just have to take it slow & safe on my own time ❤️
Less than a minute into your video but I have to stop and agree with the comment about how articulate the students were. I've always said that you can spot a dancer as soon as they open their mouth. The vast majority of dancers I've known (Danced at a pre-professional school for over a decade so I've met a lot!) are intelligent, poised, well-spoken... On Pointe absolutely FLOORED me in that regard.
I've watched 4 of the 7 episodes so far and I love it! I wish it was a longer series! Thank you for sharing your feedback about it. It makes me love the show so much more now that someone who's been through SAB and NYCB has approved it!
I loved On Pointe and was hoping you'd review it! I kept thinking about you while I was watching and thinking, "Oh wow I bet she went through these things too!"
I started watching this last week and I was wondering what you thought about it and if it was accurate. Excited to finish it now that I know that it is! Also I completely relate to what you were saying about realizing that you're not the young one anymore. I am 39 now and I keep getting that feeling quite a bit in my everyday life haha
I love the show on Disney I was worry that it wouldn’t be accurate but I am glad that you made this video about it makes me know that there is still great people out there.
Even though I’m not even close to being a professional ballet dancer, at my studio the first nutcracker rehearsals of all the scenes are complete chaos.
Isn't the school much more racially diverse than it used to be? Especially when it comes to WOMEN students of color? I know NYCB has had black males, but black women have traditionally been rare.
When things open up, I want to see The Nutcracker! Also, I think a few of the adult students were featured in The New York City Ballet Workout Book so that was quite a thrill for me, LOL!
Hey there! Great review! I am so curious--they showed Olivia's paycheck for Nutcracker, but it was blurred out. What type of salary would a child make for a run like that? Thank you!
Thank you! It's Reiss! I will link it for you: www.reiss.com/us/p/crew-neck-knitted-top-womens-michelle-in-burgundy-red-purple/?q=michelle&gaEeList=search%20results
I thought it was interesting that they made the school look very diverse. When you visit NYCB, you do not see that on stage nearly as much as this series portrayed. Was that fake for the show, or is the company trying to slowly evolve by having a more diverse school?
The new administration has taken diversity very seriously in the last couple of years. They have hired several dancers of color in the last year, but of course everything starts at the school. It will take time, but they are making an effort.

I started watching this last week and I was wondering what you thought about it and if it was accurate. Excited to finish it now that I know that it is! Also I completely relate to what you were saying about realizing that you're not the young one anymore. I am 39 now and I keep getting that feeling quite a bit in my everyday life haha
Brandon was amazing!!!!! I just loved him!!!!
I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m so happy....... I’ve been wanting something like this for a while😊😂
I can’t wait to come to CA and take your classes!!
I love the show on Disney I was worry that it wouldn’t be accurate but I am glad that you made this video about it makes me know that there is still great people out there.
OH MY GOSH, I loved this, please do some more reacts! Like in movies, to black swan, etc!
I would love to see you review/react to centerstage if you haven’t, it would be so funny!
I’m glad you commented on the series. I enjoyed it very much and the closest I’ve ever gotten to dancing was sitting in the audience.
Yes you are completely correct women of color being rare. It seems ad though the school is really focused on adding diversity.
When things open up, I want to see The Nutcracker! Also, I think a few of the adult students were featured in The New York City Ballet Workout Book so that was quite a thrill for me, LOL!
I love this. Now I want to watch the series because Katie endorsed it. Whatever Katie endorses, I want to try. We love you Katie!!!
I feel so old seeing all the new faculty. I remember when I was younger y'all were just starting within companies and it's amazing.
Hey there! Great review! I am so curious--they showed Olivia's paycheck for Nutcracker, but it was blurred out. What type of salary would a child make for a run like that? Thank you!
I was watching that series and I saw that one of my prior classmates is on the show! And I was like wow look at him in that banana suit 😂
Thank you so much for the helpful review! BTW your burgundy sweater is fabulous! Can you tell us where it comes from? The color is gorgeous!
Thank you! It's Reiss! I will link it for you: www.reiss.com/us/p/crew-neck-knitted-top-womens-michelle-in-burgundy-red-purple/?q=michelle&gaEeList=search%20results
@@kathryn_morgan Thank you so much!! Just ordered. You are a considerate and classy person, in addition to being a fabulous dancer :)
What a life you are having! 🙏🏾❤️👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾
I was wondering when you would react to this! I'm on the second or third episode, and I absolutely love it.
I’ve avoided it because I was wary about its accuracy. But after this, I’m definitely going to watch it!
I watched it all day on the day it came out!
Love your videos! Please do more ballet classes videos! They are great ❤️❤️❤️
This was so fun!!!! Thank you Katie 🥰
Yay! new video!
I really loved the series. I thought it was beautifully filmed
Guess I'll go watch the show now lmao, it sounds really interesting!
Taela (I think that is her name) was my favorite! I wish she had gotten more screen time. I can tell that she is going to be a star!
Taela is now at Houston Ballet, in the second company, as of 2023.
Nice to hear your opinion ! Thanks 🙏🏻
