Hi Steve. This brown stuff is a water based stain. To tone the treated surfaces of the wood to the same aged appearance as the surface under the bark of the tree. I put it on all treated surfaces, not just the ends. I also apply the same stain to moisten the wood between sandings, so it's better to see where it has already been sanded and where it hasn't.
The wood I use must stand outdoors and age for at least a year. So I don't use green wood anyway. I also dry wood, but I follow the rule that the peg sticks are drier than the peg holes.

What kind of oil /Staind bath do you use, brilliant Time saver
Yes, the oil bath is a real time saver. I use "Teak Oil" in the bath, for the second coat I use "Danish Oil" which I apply with a cloth.
