I don't think they're the same because Persian is more about one ethnicity which is the people of "today's Iran" but Iranian, since the ancient times, has been used for the whole ethnic identities of "Iran" as a kinda alternative name for mesopotamia.

Iranian and Persian aren't the same because Iran is a country and Iranian is the nationality of people from the country but Persian is an ethnicity (They make up about 60-70% of the population of Iran) Persians speak Persian, the offical language of Iran.
