First Impressions of Perhentian Islands: The Maldives of Malaysia!- Terengganu, MALAYSIA TRAVEL VLOG

- We are finally in Perhentian Islands! In our opinion, Malaysia is so underrated! People don't know much about Malaysia. Many never heard of Perhentian Islands.
There are actually 2 different islands: Perhentian Kecil Island and Perhentian Besar Island. We chose to visit the Kecil (small island) due to many recommendations from you guys.
We love the turquoise water and the underwater life, making Perhentian island one of the best snorkeling destination in South East Asia in our opinion. We even saw sharks while snorkeling right in front of our villa!
We went from Rainforest beach to Coral Bay to Long Beach in the island. Check out to see our favourite beach, and our first impressions of this island.

I have gone scuba diving in the Maldives, Mauritius, Bahamas and the Great Barrier Reef but nothing can out best the islands in Malaysia Such as Kapas, Perhentian, Tenggol, Pulau Sibu and Tioman. But Pulau Sipadan is real jewel of all. Do enjoy the beauty of the islands that both of you visited and thank you for sharing your vblogs to the world. I am honored to have both Steve and Ivana as a friend of Malaysia
Wow! Great comment. Wish I could give this one 2 hearts! And, our goal is to get to Sabah soon, if we can. Stay tuned!
teringin nk buat scuba tp lom ada rezki lg....huhu
@@sopienekmat2633 it now cost about RM1400. 00 to get the basic Open Water Certificate in scuba. But you can get a one time diving experience at Pulau Kapas for about RM400. O0. Belajar waktu pagi dan dive waktu petang. This course is conducted by a qualified Dive Master. Almost all island resort offer diving course, at times at discounted rate or inclusive of your holiday package. Your diving cert is under PADI which recognized everywhere in the world.

From beautiful jungles and mountains to Pristine beach and crystal clear sea water.
Malaysia is indeed a blessed country

As I mentioned before ,and from all my travels , Malaysia underrated & is a hidden gem.. ... Absolutely...
East Coast of Malaysia has one the best beaches that has to offer in the country , not including yet , the beaches in East Malaysia like Sipadan which is the supposely the best scuba diving spot in the world.... anyway , stay safe & happy travels....
Thanks for watching! Definitely loving Malaysia ❤️
yes..coral islands at Sabah one of the best in the world..need to go steve and ivana..if u said perhentian, maldives of Malaysia, islands in Sabah would probably above that..
Very true... Must go to sipadan.
@@adhwaafiq7159 yeah.. Redang island might be a bit better than perhentian, but Sabah's island are on the next level.
This is so trueee. I am Malaysian myself, and Besut native. Never been to Perhentian whole my life until MCO or quarantine in KL changed my life. Have been binge watching travelogues to intoduce us the beauty of Malaysia. Once the quarantine order has been lifted, I have been to Perhentian (which ironically, my house was just 5 mins from jetty). A paradise. So much to explore! Then Penang, Langkawi, Cameron Highlands, and islands around Semporna in Sabah. The view is breathtaking. The food was awesome. I have been missing a lot in my life. Haha. Hope that Covid19 will recover soon in Malaysia, and world. Thank you @JetLagwarriors for this video. I wish I can return there again next year.
What I like about Jetleg Warriors...
He replied almost every comment. Good job guys...
We try!! It’s nice to read what people are thinking when they watch our vlogs 😁
Let it be underrated, it will be ruined by human if too many tourists
agreed. totally.
Actually, Less tourist are better than lot of tourists. We don't want be like what happened to some countries with their treasure get ruined by some unresponsible tourists like what happened in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines or other part of the world.
It's a known fact anywhere in the world, if its over populated with tourist, it destroys the beauty of it. More boats etc means more pollution. The key to it is that the authorities/regulators have to control the influx of tourist to these areas to preserve its beauty
yes let it remain under rated. Too many tourists and development and building will ruin it

loving it here!
How far out that shallow water went blew our minds too 🤯
yeah!! Haha didn’t think it was gonna be that far!!
Perhentian Islands didn't get enough attention and efforts from previous state government. However, starting last two years, the current government is looking to revive the tourism sector of Terengganu, especially hotspots like our islands. Great and honest review from you guys means a lot for us here. Thank you and enjoy your stay.
yes i think so. Terengganu Tourism is really working hard on it!
This is a real adventure, like wow!!! I need to visit this island soon. Thanks for the experience 👌🏿

I used to work on the island at FBR. Now I'm working at one of the travel agency at Kuala Besut under the same company. Believe me you want to go on a snorkelling trip. The boatman will give u tips of where the best marine creature spotting are during the trip. Even though it is cheaper to go on your own, the experience will be different. And also you got really tired from finishing all the snorkelling spot. Another snorkelling place would be at rawa island 30mins away from Perhentian Island. Really beautiful baby islands and nobody lives there so they are more preserved.
Stay tuned for our next video!! Our snorkeling trip was awesome, can’t give away too
many details but it comes out on Saturday!
Yes!! My gf told me about Rawa too, amazing & awesome!! Now I feel like taking a longggg break...😎🤸🏻♀️🏊🏻♀️🪂🏄🏖️
@De C there is also one in johor. Sometimes people are confused between the two
We loved Long Beach so much that we didn’t even go to any other parts of Kecil
each beach got its own special thing! Rainforest is the best for snorkeling, and Coral is very quiet and relaxing. Long beach definitely won us over because of the soft sand! Great for swimming!

Remember JAWS The Movie.....😂😂😂
Thank you for showing us the beauty of Pulau Perhentian. Can't believe too many resorts all over the island. When I first landed at the island over 30 years ago, I saw a white wall at the edge of the sea, literally. It's dead corals. There is a virgin jungle and a cave too. Wonder if they are still there. Fishes were swimming so close to the beach. I remembered snokerlling not too far out in the sea. Beautiful and colorful corals. So many colorful fishes too. I saw a baby tiger shark too. I also remembered seeing a group of trojan head fishes. So fascinating.
Those days, no smart phones nor fancy cameras to take pictures, so the memories are all in my mind. 😄. Words failed me.
Enjoy all to your heart's contents. 😘
Great comment! Very well said. Thanks for sharing!
WOW Amazingg...you guys really found The Gem! Sooo Beautifull. And so clear. I am Speechless. ...

@@JetLagWarriorsso true. We did that everytime we went there. Business has not picked up yet because of the MCO and RMCO, and soon the season will be over. :(
There are massive monsoons in the East Coast of Malaysia with winds equal to typhoon winds. So even though there aren't really typhoons, there are massive winds and flooding in the east coast. Btw the shacks could be used by fishermen. Which is why not much has been done to make it look resort like.
oh that explains why there are many “broken” shack! Makes sense!
I guess the monsoon season is when the island is closed.
JetLag Warriors the season starts around November
That’s right. During the monsoon which last for at least 3-4 months, winds can be pretty strong and a lot of structures can get damaged along the way. Also, the island is closed during the monsoon. And once it’s passed, it’s back on business. Hence, many business owners will start to fix damages done by the monsoon... which may seems like it’s always on construction.
that shacks is a hotel... I have seen a tourist in other youtube video stay at that shacks... but that video is old video
By the looks of those damaged homes I’d say that area got hit with a major storm. Living in south Texas I’ve been through a few hurricanes. Looks like a cyclone might of hit there a few years ago.
That was a black tip shark at the end of the video. Not really aggressive unless challenged and very good to eat.
Have fun guys, wish I was there. I’m enjoying your vlogs.
thanks!! we learned that it is because of monsoon
There are two amazing trips you should not miss in Perhentian. One, definitely snorkeling at the Marine National Park. Make sure they take you to the Marine National Park, not just to random places to snorkel. It will blow your mind. We saw an eel that is as long as a python. The biggest fish, the weirdest fish, you name it, they've got it. Also, another trip is to swim with turtles (normally in the afternoon). The turtle is so huge that we got scared. Amazing.
Wow! Ok, great tips
I am so jelous ... looks like you are in heaven on earth !! Now you both make me realized that there are still many places in msia that I myself have not been to .. Steve and Ivana .. have fun ..but please stay safe always .. ❤

The worst weather in Malaysia are when we entered Monsoon seasons. We got two monsoon seasons per year. Pretty high and rough waves. Some islands will be closed at that time. And some houses and chalet near the beaches will be effected. Make sure choose your island holiday time wisely during this season.
Hello, what months are the moonseasons please ?
2:46 these things happened. In kapas, Lang tengah, Perhentian, tioman, pangkor and others you'll find abandoned dilapidated chalets and resorts from years gone by. It might be an eye sore to some but at the same time I find it quite interesting to explore these ruins. It's one of the things I'd normally look for when I'm on these beautiful islands. Usually on the more famous beaches like long beach, new developers will tear down the old one and build a new resort.
Ohh, I see. Makes sense. It wasn’t too off-putting for us, the majority of the island is beautiful, and useful etc. I feel bad though, imagining someone building those chalets and running out of resources/ money. Hopefully they can redeem it and fulfil their dream one day
@@JetLagWarriors what a nice thing to say
This makes me miss diving so much! It's been years since we've been to Perhentian...
Perhentian❤️❤️ ! The water is so clear, just amazing
In Malaysia they're also have beautiful like this. In Semporna, Sabah. I reccomend you to there. It's really beautiful and the beach is really fresh 😁😍✨✨✨✨
the house owner most likely passed away or maybe the place got hit by strong monsoon winds
by the looks of it it used to be a small village
you move your accommation to Long Beach later and stay a night in Redang....there is also Lang Tengah Island
We moved to Long Beach later on, definitely a great beach, the best on the island

Been to Redang and Perhentian islands a few times already. And that few times boat rides were also my few times like the S'pore "Merlion" gushing out ! I can't take the cooking hot weather. Lol.

Right! I think the whole island is closed for almost 3 months, starting soon
Marvellous drone shot. Amazing exploration of d island.
Somehow I feel d island needs to be properly developed, more organized, not necessarily having a luxury resort.
Thanks for watching! I think the island is getting more developed, we saw a few construction projects on the go. Obviously, COVID is slowly things down, but things are developing!
@@JetLagWarriors Thanks to you n your videos. I've seen a beautiful observation site being left abandoned in d island, I'm not sure it's in d Perhentian kecil or besar, but it is bad for any tourist.
Beautiful island. Next u must come to the islands in Semporna, SABAH the east of Malaysia. Definitely u'll enjoy them 😁
Our goal is to come to Sabah and Sarawak when we can. Not sure about soon, with the pandemic and all, but stay tuned!
@@JetLagWarriors he's right. West Coast Malaysia has one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, hence the water isn't as clear as on the East coast. But for the best waters, it's definately Semporna. Google Mabul Island. It's a small island south of Semporna. Plus the seafood... yum

@@JetLagWarriors Hmmm a very tricky one but I think I did enjoy Redang juuust a bit better. I have been to Malaysia a few times and visited other places including KL, Penang, Malacca. Putrajaya, Kuala Terrenganu, and Langkawi
Even though Malaysia is naturally blessed with good weather and less natural disaster, those islands at east coast sometimes hit by strong wind during monsoon season. Chalet closer to the beach usually need more maintainance because of this reason.
you are right!
my recommendation is pulau besar, samudera, fauna, arwana resort... their beach has snorkel value, no need to go other place to snorkel..

Sapphire! Good description. Just beautiful 😍
Such a great great place that you guys explored. Seriously, I totally get what you mean... an island in paradise overlooking the sea, with very local styles of chalet/cabins instead of the very modern and exclusive looking 5 star resorts. The cabins “kampung style” itself is 5 STAR. It’s very sad to see that the place looks abandoned.
looks amazing there we want to go so much

Have you been to Sabah? I think the islands in Semporna are out of this world. Such pristine beaches with crystal clear water. Wish the pandemic situation right now would be over, miss sabah so much.
Since you are there, why not check out the windmill up the hill? There isn't many windmill you can see in Malaysia. Need to have a bit of hiking though.
Stay tuned to an upcoming video 😁
Island constructions are expensive due to logistics of getting the material in and out, hence some took the easy way of just abandon a failed venture.
Politics
I think you’re right
Embarassing. Maybe the local authorities wt the help of locals cud clear off the garbage/abandoned structures.
It's a million dollar view. If you want to stay in a 5 star resort with aircon and all the facilities you're going to have to pay for it. Some people are happy to stay in a cheap bungalow with a great view. Normally by the sea you get good breezes and don't need aircon. By the way they are called bungalows not chalets.
That why i love my home town hahahha🙊🙊

5:55 this is how it always look like on Perhentian Kecil. I mean the rustic look, the pristine image. Back when I first came to Perhentian Kecil almost 20 years ago the lodgings were all like these chalets. No concrete building, no structures higher than 2 storeys, no luxury resorts, thus why Perhentian Kecil was known as backpackers haven since the 80s and 90s. All wooden chalets built on stilts. It has that rustic charm look on a pristine island. That's what made me love perhentian kecil in the first place.
6:40 this may not be attractive to some but you'd be surprised to find a lot of backpackers who actually enjoy staying at these type of rustic chalets because they wanted to experience the very basic, no frills island living. I've been to Perhentian a dozen times and I do prefer to stay on this type of lodging.
7:40 Perhentian Kecil only started to be a tourist attraction recently. It was never meant to be a tourist attraction in the first place. We have redang island for that. What you see happening now in Perhentian is it being commercialised for profit. A lot of chalets owned by small time local operators are now being taken over by wealthy developers who built fancy luxury resorts. The effect is on the environment and on the island as a whole. Most island locals do not like what is happening to their island. Coral bleaching happened, a lot of corals are dying fast by the seconds.
When the government started to build the jetties on the beaches around the islands back in 2007, there were some opposition from the locals. When I talked to them back then they weren't happy because it could affect the livelihoods of the taxi boatmen and the affect on the marine ecosystem. Sometimes overdeveloping is not a positive thing especially on a pristine tropical island.
I knew an owner of a small convenient shop/internet cafe in long beach who had to close his shop in 2006 because of development.
Oh wow. Great comment, very insightful and thanks for sharing. The way Perhentian is today, I wouldn’t have guessed it wasn’t intended to be a tourist attraction, and that the locals weren’t sure if it was a good idea. Ah, things can change. I hope the locals are okay with the tourists coming, because it really is a beautiful spot. Thanks again for sharing
@@JetLagWarriors here's a write-up of Perhentian Kecil I wrote few years ago, more like a memoir than a travel guide. There's a lot of old photos of Perhentian if you don't feel like reading. You might find some info that you may not find on the internet.
Bit.ly/perhentiankecil
Yes it is sad if the livelihood of the locals are badly affected. The resorts don't always employ locals, instead foreign workers are brought in to work in the resorts and restaurants. Also the resorts are not owned by locals on the island. Outsiders from the cities or some have foreign partners own the chalets and resorts. It is sad when tourism sometimes put the original inhabitants of the island on the sidelines and they watch helplessly as their home, privacy and environment gets invaded by outsiders.

14:45 the sharks you'd find on Perhentian waters are black tip reef sharks. Don't worry it is not harmful, their diet comprise mainly of small reef fish and mollusk/crustaceans.
In long beach there are house reefs on the north end of the beach, just beyond the jetty. Go snorkel starting from the jetty and go further north next to the rocky edges.
Thanks for this! We talked to one local guy who said the sharks were ‘vegetarion’. Good enough for us! We felt safe, and actually took a snorkel trip to go try and find some bigger ones!
if you look at the recent tripadvisor's world best, not even one beach from south east asia is ranked in the world's top ten. it makes me wonder if the beaches on the other side of the world are made of gold and jewels. and malaysia is not even listed in any category at all ie hotel, food, experience etc. i think the word underrated is overrated.
Makes me wonder if trip advisor can be bribed?? Maybe they give the highest ranking to the highest bidder? Don’t know
@@JetLagWarriors you mean like the golden globe awards? lol just kidding. i am just sad that we are not on the list tho.
You're right, Gajah Mengaum.
Let it remain that way. Overcrowding with tourists will take away the natural charm of perhentian island. It doesn't need any to be listed on any ranking, perhentian is a jewel and any ranking or none it is there, we have it. Let it remain under the radar.

It's a good thing that you guys can enjoy Perhentian to your own during these times. Most of us are saving money due to lost of jobs, pay cuts, etc. Plus, most people don't dare to go out yet. So enjoy your holidays, guys. We're happy for you!
Hey, thanks! We enjoyed Perhentian! What a beautiful place. Hopefully the tourism industry comes back soon enough, for the locals and the tourists sake! Thanks for watching
