- When does the first season of I Am Groot take place on the MCU Timeline? Is I Am Groot even canon to the MCU? We break down all the facts and go frame-by-frame to help you determine whether I Am Groot is MCU Canon and where to place I Am Groot on the MCU Timeline. We use details from within the 5 Groot shorts, along with quotes from Kirsten Lepore, Brad Winderbaum, and James Gunn to make our case.

When Does Ms. Marvel Take Place? - • MCU Timeline Breakdown...
I agree that the shorts can be considered 616 canon as they don't contradict anything in the 616 timeline. Considering that GotG Vol 1 and Vol 2 take place at least a month or so apart (perhaps a few months), then it isn't surprising that Baby Groot hasn't aged much in the 4 shorts that occur after GotG Vol 2, as he doesn't age much between Vol 1 and Vol 2. Nice work on the video!
Thanks for watching! And yeah, there’s no real need to consider them non-canon as there’s no real contradictions.
LMAO I KNEW YOU WOULD DO THIS. UNDERRATED AF
Haha thank you, hope you enjoy!
Just seeing how much work you put into this timeline makes me accept it as 100% canon to the franchise! Keep up the good work!
Aww thanks man, you’re the best!
I’ve been waiting for this one, really enjoyed the shorts because there just so fun and simple
Yeah, same here. And they’re easily digestible.
My parents:"Your feelings for him are not real"
Me: "THEY ARE REAL TO ME"
I am Groot
@@Geekritique Google asked if I wanted it to translate to English. I said yes... nothing happened.
James Gunn claimed that Agent Carter wasn't canon, which was disproved by "The History of Marvel Studios", so I'll just enjoy his content and take no stock in what he deems canon or non-canon.
That’s probably the best way to look at it.
This^ I really really love James Gunn and what he does but he gets canonicity so wrong all the time. At this point I’ve stopped considering anything he says canon or not canon and just see the facts and what other marvel officials say
You've been hyping this one up on Twitter, Dakota. Hyped.
And now it’s out in the world and I am free
You should do a video on Spider Man Freshman year and see how its not Mcu Canon.
When it comes out maybe.
James Gunn encountering the unfortunate fact that he doesn't get to say what's canon to the MCU. I haven't watched these yet but given the canonical disasters elsewhere in the MCU (like say, Spider-Man: Homecoming) placing I Am Groot seems like small fries.
Yeah, I think he’s just very protective of his work. It’s understandable. 🤷🏻♂️
I could watch the short where the little rock community attacks Groot over and over again. I enjoyed these shorts and I love the update Dakota! I actually wondered why Disney chose to add each short separately rather than put all 5 in to a "season" but what you said makes sense. Stellar work as always!
Thanks man! And I know! When the leaf falls and they’re all just scooping up chunks haha! Amazing short.
I say the show can be your personal preference if you want to consider it part of canon since they're so short and inconsequential to the rest of movies and shows, I'll include it in canon.
I'd say the only contradicting thing in the show is the picture that Groot makes in episode 5 of the Guardians which doesn't include Mantis and that episode is set after Vol. 2, but I can probably explain that. More then likely since Mantis is new to the team Groot hasn't known her long yet so he probably was only drawing the original guardians from the first film that he knows better.
Everyone except James Gunn says it's canon. I think by the number of people saying it is canon is larger than people that say it's not. 1 < Everyone. It's safe to say it is canon.
That’s a fair way to look at it!
"Runaways" season 3, episodes 1-4 take place immediately after season 2, and episodes 5-10 take place 6 months after Infinity War (this is not necessary since there is no reference to Infinity War in the series)
Yup!
where would you put i am groot season 2?
Please do DCEU watch order
These shorts were the cutest thing ever LOVED IT!!
I know! Me too.
Yeah, unless Guardians 3 contains a flashback explaining how they got the Benetar that conflicts with them having the Benetar while Groot was still in his child stage, I see no reason not to treat these all as canon. And while I do like the Groot's Pursuit -> Magnum Opus -> The Little Guy -> Groot Takes a Bath order since it would fit the narrative that Groot destroys a significant enough portion of the Quadrant at the end of Magnum Opus that the Guardians have to get the Benetar, there's no reason to believe that the damage caused in Magnum Opus HAD to have been so great that they couldn't continue using the Quadrant or that they couldn't have still had the Quadrant when they got the Benetar. (In fact, I believe in Infinity War Rocket mentions that they have two ships which is what allowed most of the Guardians to go to Knowhere while Thor, Groot, and Rocket went to Nidavellir, but I don't remember if the Quadrant was the non-Benetar ship that they used when they split up.)
I love that point about the two ships. Forgot about that! Thanks for bringing it up!
The Quadrant was not the second ship, it was an even smaller escape pod for the Benetar. However, I do agree that the Quadrant makes sense as a home base, as I don't think 6 people could comfortably live in the Benetar full time.
Yeah, it is really cramped in there.
@@Wonder50 Good call. That would seem to imply that they lose the Quadrant at some point prior to Infinity War if true though (unless Kraglin was off with it somewhere which is why he didn’t appear). Hopefully Guardians 3 will shed some light on the matter.
(Before watching video) I believe the Shorts are canon but aren’t that important. It’s just showing Groot and him having fun.
Well, I don’t disagree!
This exactly. Some folks conflate "canon" with "essential viewing", when that isn't the case.
we need X-Men movies in this multiversal timeline! Since mutants will be arriving at MCU and we also saw Charles Xavier at MoM, I believe we need to watch X-Men movies in order to know them
As the majority of the show takes place after GOTGV2, I don't see much point in breaking it up.
That’s a great point. I think it’s because there’s no narrative continuity, and they’re essentially short films, I chose to separate them accordingly.
A possible theory is that after groot blows a hole in the quadrant the guardians decide to replace it with the benatar rather than fix it and episodes 2 and 4 occur after that.
But your theory of them having both ships and the benatar being used to land on planets while the quad stays in space is also equally plausible
What about season 2 of I am Groot cause season 2 is on Disney+ too
Can you do an episode on the exact month and day the Logan movie takes place?
The Quadrant is capable of landing on planets. We saw this in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 towards the end. However, a spacecraft of this size cannot quickly take off and deorbit a planet. The Benetar will, like the Melano, be able to do this and if the Guardians need to get away quickly, the Benetar would be just right for missions on planetary surfaces. In addition, the Benetar will be just as agile as all other Revenger ships of this (I'll call them Melano class) class.
Now to the theory that the Quadrant is used as a base by the Guardians. This isn't all that trivial because if you look closely in the post credit scene Groot's room door/bulkhead is exactly the same as everyone else on the quandrant. And the room behind Quill doesn't look like the Melano class rooms either.
Ah great catch, I forgot about Kraglin’s save. Good one.
I’ve been waiting for this
Me too, buddy, me too.
Thank you for tge great new upgrade
It was unexpected because it's Groot but still love tge MCU content
Glad you enjoy it!
great video! answered all my questions. here is a totally unrelated question. So Tobey mcgauire, Andrew Garfield, and tom holland Spiderman are all heavily rumored to be in across the spider verse or beyond the spider verse. If they are, would you put the spider verse films on the timeline? and if you did would you also put Japanese Spiderman and the 60s Spiderman on there too? Japanese Spiderman is confirmed to be in the future movies and we've already seen the 60s Spiderman
I’m not sure. I’ll have to mull that over.
I am Groot
I am Groot
I thought it was the Milano in ‘Little Guy’, thus taking place before GOTG Vol 2
Nope, notice the rounded front and the glass is in front, instead of on top. It’s definitely the Benatar!
It’s kinda funny that immediately after seeing the adventures of baby Groot we see a child go blind and have brutal fights king a mob boss
The MCU don’t mess around 😂
Yeah imo I think with my MCU rewatch I'm gonna watch the first one before GOTG2 and then the rest before each of the films like pixar shorts
Oh that’s a fun idea!
I see quite a few people elsewhere cite Gunn & Disney+ in the same breath when they argue against Marvel Television shows being canon. Well, now the two contradict each other, so clearly _one_ of them has to be wrong.
Yeah, they don’t see eye to eye on this one.
Will She-Hulk take place after Ms. Marvel or before Ms. Marvel?
I think before, but I won’t know until I’ve examined every episode.
I seriously dont understand the hate this show is getting. It is such an innocent, fun little bunch of shorts that its a waste of time complaining 😂 i think it deserves to be canon in my opinion. Im just excited were getting some incredible hulk references in she hulk!
Yeah, no hate from me, it’s a fun little show.
I heard marvel hired a official timeline keeper. You should be it.
I heard so too.
Did you know there's the comics that are also MCU canon?
I knew, yeah.
Have not seen Jen for a long time and you have not mentioned where she is.Are you two still married and is she okay?
Thanks for checking in. Jenn and I are still married and everything is good. She’s stepped away from social media because she pursued a career in teaching. For whatever reason, there’s a big taboo of having an online presence and be a teacher. So I think she’ll be coming back to do some videos some day, but she needs to work that out herself and with her school. Thanks for asking.
I watched... but I want the "I Am Groot" narated edit. Lol
I am Groot. I am Groot? I AM GROOT!!!
Does this even needs to be canon... The stories doesn't really add anything to the overall arc 😅
Very true, it’s not exactly necessary to the story.
I am Groot
I am Groot
@@Geekritique Wise words.
@@Geekritique We are Groot.
So good 😭
I will watch the entire show after guardians of the galaxy vol 2 because I don,t want break the show up
Makes a lot of sense!
To make it easier, I just watch them all between Vol 1 and Vol 2
That’s fair dunno, but most occur after, so you’d be better off watching them all after.
I see no wrong why this wouldn’t be canon, hell don’t know what guns talking about even tho he worked on the show
Seems to me like he’s just being overly protective of his Guardians films.
I don't think it really matters, it's a spin-off
So true.
Thank you so much and do you know when she hulk take Place?
I don’t know yet 🤷🏻♂️
There is a fact that catches my attention, and it is the fact that in the drawing that Groot makes in the last short only Rocket, Gamora, Star Lord and Drax appear, that is, Mantis and Nebula do not appear, which by the end from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had already joined the Guardians, and it is a drawing of the moment when adult Groot sacrifices himself to save the Guardians from the destruction of Ronan's ship at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1, wrapping them all with branches. Which is why it's hard for me to imagine that short happening after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The only answer I can think of is that Groot at that point still doesn't consider Mantis and Nebula to be his family or part of the group.
But they weren’t on the Quadrant before Guardians 2.
@@Geekritique Yes, I know. That's why it's a bit confusing for me.
honestly I never trust James Gunn at his word for several things he says mindlessly or randomly for example:
say that the Marvel TV series are not Canonical for the MCU using the argument that Marvel TV and Marvel Studios never really related which we know is not true
say that The Suicide Squad takes place in DCEU and then say that he doesn't know which Superman was hit by Bloodsport.
say that The Guardians of The Galaxy Holiday Special is the "epilogue" of Phase Four after Kevin Feige himself says that Wakanda Forever is the end of Phase Four. and the worst part is that he didn't even know which Phase Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3 would be. to me, he only said that just to give an answer to the person who asked him.
He has a very strict definition of canon, for sure.
I think the Holiday Special will be the last thing in Phase Four. Feige just didn't say that because he might not have wanted to talk about it at SDCC, or because he meant that Wakanda Forever would be the last big thing in Phase Four (Holiday Special is just a short little thing that won't have massive stakes or anything.)
To me, it's kinda like how most people consider Endgame the end of Phase 3, even though it's technically Far From Home.
@@Wonder50 yes, many people consider Endgame to be the "true" ending of Phase Three, but there is a small difference between Phase Three and Phase Four:
Kevin Feige himself confirmed that Far From Home is the end of Phase Three saying that in essence, Endgame and Far From Home are two pieces of the same story. in this case, we could really interpret that Endgame is the "Conclusion" and Far From Home is the "Epilogue".
in Phase Four, he himself says that Wakanda Forever is the Conclusion of this Phase, and does not mention any other production that would be the "other part of the conclusion of this Phase" as in Phase Three.
Fans might consider Endgame to be the last film in Phase Three, but we know that officially the real last film is Far From Home. likewise this fits Phase Four.
Another banger as always!
Thanks bro! Glad you like it.
Where would you put She-Hulk in the timeline?
I don’t know yet.
Hey buddy can you please make a video about when does Thor: Love and Thunder take place?
Once I get a digital copy of Love and Thunder I’ll jump into it for you.
@@Geekritique Thanks bud
@Geekritique Amazing video as always but I was wondering do you have a spot where we can place she hulk yet I understand if you don’t because only a third of the show is out
Currently I have my opinions but I can’t say just yet.
@@Geekritique alright thanks for the reply when will you end up making your when does she hulk take place video before the show finishes or after ?
Those shorts are so cute ❤️
They definitely are!
Love these videos
Thank you, glad you enjoy em!
I’m on the fence about it being canon
It’s a bit confusing honestly 🤷🏻♂️
It is. Cope

Great work as always!
Thanks!
I was so excited to actually see my name on the patreon shoutout!! I’m happy to support you guys, your videos are awesome!
Wooo! Thank you so much, you have no idea how much it means to have people contribute to the channel like that. You’re the best.
@@Geekritique Okay I know this random but am I still a patron for you guys? I for some reason can’t access my patreon account and I don’t know if it got deleted or something happened to it. So I was just wondering if the patron “Drew Ryan” was still following you to see if it still exists. Sorry I know this is random!
Responded over on Twitter.
@@Geekritique very helpful!! You guys rock!
Oh Yeah !
I am Groot.
Yeah, I always assumed the Benatar was a spare Ravager ship docked on the Quadrant. Because weren’t the Ravager ships they used in Gotg1 all m-class ships? So timeline-wise it doesn’t mess up anything.
That would work out pretty well.
I'll always believe you more, Dakota. Btw, perfect timing. I'm doing my complete MCU rewatch and I had just finished watching GotG Vol 1 when I got the email that you had uploaded the new timeline with these shorts on Patreon.
Thanks for subscribing to the Patreon btw, that’s very kind of you. Glad the timing worked out!
I am Groot.
I am Groot.
Could you guys do more trailer reaction videos? I’m always interested in your initial thoughts and reactions. It would’ve been nice to see what you thought of the last Pokemon direct for example
Hey Trinh, I’d love to do that, cause the Pokémon direct was excellent. But as you’ve probably noticed we’re trying something a bit different on the channel recently. I apologize if that’s not what you’re looking for from us.
The thing is Jenn is pursuing a career in teaching and she can’t really have a public social life like we used to enjoy together here on UA-cam. It’s a weird teacher rule in our area, so for now it’s just me and my video essays, but hopefully someday we can do more of those! Again, apologies if it’s not what you subbed for.
Love your stuff. Very precise and in-depth
Thanks man!
Look into She - Hulk
On it!
@@Geekritique Heck yeah!, I'm on Jessica Jones Season 3, getting close to finishing the list!
Enjoy!

Glad to see that this series and all the other timeline videos you produce are doing 'fantastic for' you, Dakota. Truly awesome to also see this timeline get expanded on and explained since even I was confused with the Benatar placement. Also, with the 'When does the MCU take place?' series, you made a jump from Ant Man 2 to Loki and Black Widow before making another leap to Moon Knight. Will the rest of the movies and series be added on the playlist too?
Thanks for watching. And yes, I plan to, it’s just a matter of time.
@@Geekritique Ahh okay. Was just wondering is all. But godspeed to you man
when Groot can age from a baby to a teenager in 4 years, the he probably can age from a baby to a (in human years) 3-4 year-old child in 1 or two months.
Yep! That’s what happened!
@@Geekritique yeah but you always basically said "he's growing too fast for two months."
Amazing video keep it up
Thanks Uggy!
Great work man! I checked it out last night and went into it believing Gunn that it's not canon even though like you said it doesn't really contradict anything in the MCU. Not to mention as much as I love the MCU having multiple movies and shows being canon, not everything has to be in the MCU and I think it's alright to do projects that aren't canon which thankfully they are already doing like X-Men 97, Spider-Man Freshman Year and etc.
Yeah, sometimes it’s just fun to have some non canon stuff on the side. Thanks for watching!
@@Geekritique Anytime man!
X-Men '97 is not in the MCU and it's never considered MCU project.
Both times they’ve referenced the mutants in the MCU, they’ve used the theme from that show. If you don’t think it’ll be important to Marvel’s eventual unveiling of X-Men in the MCU, you may want to rethink that…
@@Geekritique But still it own thing.
Well that makes a lot of sense thank you, do you intend to finish the where does it take place series with missing projects?
Eventually, yes.
@@Geekritique That’s great because I truly love the series 👍
Glad to hear it!
I had a look at your timeline and noticed you haven’t placed “Peter’s To-Do List” on your timeline. It’s a short film that’s available on the Far From Home Blu-Ray, I know it’s a small thing and it might be obvious where it fits on the timeline but having a full MCU would be very satisfying
Thanks for checking! I consider it a deleted scene more than I consider it a one-shot, which is why I don’t include it.
Awesome
Thank you!
noice

I feel it's like What If, canon, just not to 616. And even if it, it's not canon to me, much like Marvel Television and What If
That’s fair. It does feel like it’s just kind of a fun aside.
Marvel studios just hired an official timeline keeper. Is it you?
No. No, not me. I wish.
